This was absolutely delightful! This was rockstar romance done incredibly well! Emmy is our FMC who started out in an indie band and gone out on her own. She ends up reuniting with her former band mates, and first love, for a reunion tour where she has to grapple with her feelings for her former band mate.
I really enjoyed all of the characters in this! 831 Stories has been published a few recent novellas with older FMCs and MMCs and they’ve all been so well done including this one! Leila does such an amazing job at creating such a well rounded cast of characters, who are all dealing with different issues in their lives when they are brought back together.
I really enjoyed Bishop’s character. His story about the líon and how it represented his struggle with fame and the larger part that plays in the book was one of my favorite parts. This book does such an incredible job at showing how fame can quickly go to your head if you’re not careful.
I also really enjoyed the relationship between Emmy and Bishop! Emmy has had so many life changed at the beginning of the book and even after 20 years she’s still pining after Bishop. They both have a lot of baggage and it’s nice seeing them work through some of that together.
Overall, I definitely recommend this if you’re looking for a short, but sweet rockstar romance with a lot of depth. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for what Leila Sales does next!

I really enjoyed all of the characters in this! 831 Stories has been published a few recent novellas with older FMCs and MMCs and they’ve all been so well done including this one! 4.75 - nearly perfect, the ending/redemption felt a teenie tiny bit rushed

I honestly went into this with very little expectations, but it really exceeded them! It manages to pack so much in just about 250 pages.
„Encore Performance” tells the story of an acclaimed early-2000s indie band, Deja View, as it reunites for their twentieth anniversary to embark on a celebratory tour around the country. Our main character, Emmy Gold, is now a successful solo artist and somewhat recently divorced, while her two band mates, Bishop and Lawrence, have since transitioned to a regular life style. But the reunion comes with its tensions and friction, as Emmy and Bishop have to face their shared, intense history.
Honestly, this is as messy as it sounds, but what I was most surprised by was how retrospective it was. I loved that the story (and romance) is told from the perspective of a 44 year old woman, who has lived her life and achieved a great deal and messed up a lot. Emmy looks back a lot on who she had been when Deja View was first starting out, and all the mistakes she'd made then, and all the ways in which she wanted to avoid being that person again and making those same mistakes. Because, after all, who you are at 24 is not who you are at 44, and you can look back on it and admit all the ways in which you were wrong. But you can also sometimes overcorrect. And this doesn't just pertain to Emmy herself, but also Bishop, and to some extent Lawrence (although he was kinda just there; I wish we'd gotten a bit more of him). Finding a way to love and accept your messy young self is not easy, but it is needed in order to move on and try again and maybe make things right this time. This is kind of the central theme of the book, and I loved it!
The romance is also messy, but it felt realistic. Just because we've grown and we're aware of our mistakes and where we messed up doesn't mean we're perfect people now and that we can't mess up. I think some readers might be a bit put off by some of Bishops' actions (understandably & his character would agree), but he felt raw and real to me, and I liked that! I'm not a fan of overly perfect mmcs in romances, and he certainly isn't, but I think he's charming and he's trying to better himself.
I think my only overall gripe with the story is that I wish it were longer, especially the third act, because so much is happening! And I wish we'd spent more time with these characters. But, still, I think this does a great job for a book so short, especially since, like I said, it packs quite a lot. Everything is told in this kind of dual timeline, but in a way that mirrors and reflects all the ways in which Emmy tries to not follow the exact same trajectory.
A solid 4.5 stars! And I look foward to reading more from Lila Sales!

Emmy Gold has figured out her career as a 40-year-old indie rock goddess. She tours, she has a beautiful home in Laurel Canyon, she has great friends, she doesn’t need to retrace her time with her first band Deja View. Everything changes when one of her old band mates turns up on her doorstep with a devastating medical diagnosis giving the band has a brief window to get back together for a reunion tour. Which means Emmy is going to have to come face to face with the man she yearned for in her youth, Bishop Ward. The tour brings up their shared past; allows them to reflect on who they were then and how that made them into the people they are today.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book, I am a sucker for a band romance, and as someone who was around for the “indie-sleaze” scene it was a real nostalgia hit. Emmy is a very cool, she maintains her stylish, confident front women persona in a way that feels grounded. Bishop of the present is adorable, and a lot of his charm comes from the fact he is a teacher. Bishop of the past was a classic 20- something band boy is all the worst ways. Emmy and Bishop’s past relationship felt slightly underdeveloped on his end. Encore Performance by Leila Sales was probably one of my favorites among the 831 Stories I have read recently. This novella managed to be as close to a slow burn as is possible in a story this short, which is no small feat.
Encore Performance follows solo artist Emmy Gold after she is approached by her old bandmate about a reunion tour. At first, the idea is the farthest thing from where she sees her career going, but the drummer is persuasive, and pretty soon Emmy has agreed to 18 shows. One of the biggest reasons she is against it is that the tour will put her back in the same room as Bishop, the band's bassist, who broke her heart over and over again when she was desperately in love with him and he was, at most, ambivalent to her. As they get to know the current versions of each other and reckon with their pasts, they must figure out what the future looks like for them.
The way the sex scenes were written in this novel was perfect, and they aged with the characters. The first scene, when they were in their early 20s, was rushed, one-sided, and selfish. Two decades later, they were able to remedy that original encounter, and it was everything the first was not: communicative, open, and mutual. Sex is so often written into novels as an unrealistic display of unrestrained passion where the woman immediately gets off multiple times, and the man both lasts forever and can go 4+ rounds back-to-back. While some people may have that experience, most do not, and it was refreshing to read a story where all of it, minus the fame, felt within reach of real life.

After decades of repressing young Emmy’s needy tendencies and avoiding contact with Bishop, the band’s bassist, Deja View is back together for a reunion tour to raise funds for their third member’s medical bills. The question is can they do it aging despite the baggage and drama they all bring to the stage.
A more mature character gives the perspective and growth that a younger character cannot. Emmy is forced to finally find grace and acceptance for her younger self’s vulnerability, open heart and embarrassing moments. Though this was about a rockstar I think her shame/embarrassment about her actions as a twenty something are universally understood and experienced.
Told in a dual timeline that gave the perfect amount of backstory to support the present timeline, this is a perfect second chance, forced proximity novella.

I was so bored while reading this and this is a 200-page novella. I genuinely did not care for any of the characters whatsoever. I found Emmy to be so grating because the romance in this hinged solely on the question: Can a man change in 20+ years? And to no one's surprise, except Emmy's, they can! Wow. And, lowkey, she was kind of pathetic in my eyes. A lot of this, to me, felt very self-insert-y, as if the author was writing fan fiction of themselves being in an indie rock band.
It's also very hard to convince me in a novella that this is a HEA romance and they're going to be together forever because there's not a lot of room for the relationship to develop, but I can assure you that these two would not last a year together. Bottom line, I just don't think this was for me.

If you loved the Daisy Jones & The Six vibes, you’ll probably enjoy this one!
It’s an old band coming back together for a second-chance reunion tour - but of course, there are old feelings, complicated dynamics, and plenty of baggage that come along for the ride.
I wouldn’t say this is the strongest 831 book I’ve read. I think the novella format can make it harder to really sink into a story and get to know the characters well enough to truly feel for them or root for them. I wanted a little more depth and time with these characters. Still, if you’re looking for a quick, nostalgic, music-filled read with a little drama, this one could be worth adding to your TBR.

The chemistry between Emmy and Bishop was undeniable and it was impossible not to root for them. From tender and vulnerable moments where I wouldn’t stop swooning, to the twist I didn’t see coming, and emotions I couldn’t help feeling – this book kept me on my toes and I loved every minute of it!

I normally love a second chance romance but by the end I wasn’t so sure these two should reunite. There was some personal growth/reflection prior to the band reunion but they fell back into their old selves quickly.
A lot was included in not a lot of pages. Kept me very engaged. The ending felt rushed and while they said the right things it was such an unhealthy relationship in the past so it was hard to get over that hurt and after 20yrs of silence.

What happens when one of your old band mates tells you he has cancer and he needs the money for treatment. The last think Emmy wants to do is a reunion tour came face to face with Bishop the third member of the band she is doing good on her own expect that she just got divorced so maybe this tour will give her a new purpose. Everything is going great actually amazing until all of it comes crashing down...

I really enjoyed this dual timeline, rockstar romance! Here to more romance books with characters in their 40s ❤️ Emmy and Bishop messed up their chance in their early 20s, which inevitably broke up their band. Then, 20 years later they reunite for a reunion tour and figure out how to make it work together. As usual, I wanted maybe 20-30 more pages at the end, but overall this was a great, fast read!

Although I could not relate to salivating over an indie sleeze man in skinny jeans and buddy holly glasses, I enjoyed this! I am always amazed at how 831 authors manage to move along the plot while simultaneously doing a really good job describing the characters and their motivations. I think one way they manage this is by making them pretty straightforward and no-nonsense almost, which I also appreciate bc I hate when people in relationships can’t communicate lol

Fun! Encore Performance follows a solo musician who was in a popular band in the early aughts. When she goes on a reunion tour with her former band tensions run high and old emotions are brought back up. It at times felt similar to Daisy Jones and the Six. Part of it takes place in Austin which is something I always love.

Flew through this novella in a little over 24 hours…pleasantly surprised by the older (44 year old) main characters and so many of the band references ended up being bands from my youth. The author managed to pack a lot of story into very few pages and I really enjoyed this one. My biggest criticism is the band name…obviously completely subjective but oof, cringe!

Short and sweet second chance rockstar romance that refreshingly features the main female character as the more successful musician. To me, a successful second chance romance is when the author convinces me that the characters are older and wiser and have learnt from their mistakes with that person from the past. And this novella successfully delivered that.
I adored Emmy and Bishop who are forced to reunite twenty years after their relationship and band fell apart. I also loved the reveal that was slowly starting to twig for me as I was reading it (I do love a bit of bonkers thrown in).
