Johnny Hart (1931-2007) was born and raised in Endicott, New York. Johnny created the comic strips, "B.C." and the "Wizard of Id". Launched in 1958, B.C. was written and drawn by Johnny. With the release of the Wizard of Id in 1964, drawn by cartoonist Brant Parker, Hart became one of only four cartoonists to have two comic strips appearing in over 1000 papers each. Johnny won numerous awards for his work, including the National Cartoonist Society's highest honor, the Reuben award, for B.C. in 1968 and the Wizard of Id in 1984.
Brant Parker was an American cartoonist. He co-created and drew The Wizard of Id comic strip until passing the job on to his son, Jeff Parker, in 1997. Cartoonist Johnny Hart, his co-creator, continued writing the strip until his death on April 7, 2007.
Somehow I’ve never really got The Wizard of Id, occasionally it’s funny, but mostly not so much. I think perhaps it’s that it doesn’t have any character that I really enjoy to read about. The one that comes closest is the W.C. Fields like lawyer who has a certain charm, but his appearance doesn’t elevate it that much.
Johnny Hart’s misogamy gets tired fast, but when he is not doing “ugly wife” jokes, this is a very clever comic strip. The Misogamy mostly just show what was acceptable humor then that is not acceptable now—thank goodness.
