Vampire Wars #3

A Split in the Road

Rate this book
Samuel had finally gotten away from Master Dumas, but his mother’s abandonment hurt, not to mention the pain of starvation he would endure. Plus, Master Dumas was searching for him, bent on mating Samuel and keeping him under his control.

Taking a human trucker up on a ride wasn’t Samuel’s smartest decision, but being young and small, he wasn’t sure what else he could do. And the human—Tayen—was as sexy as hell, and drew Samuel in like a moth to flame.

Tay took Samuel to his family’s home, their time together resulting in Samuel falling for the big human. But, Myron, Tay’s brother-in-law and a master vampire wouldn’t allow Samuel to remain in their home, too worried for his pregnant mate, Sarah, Tay’s sister. Samuel wouldn’t stay where he wasn’t wanted, and felt guilty for putting Tay in such a situation. But before he could leave, tragedy struck, they were attacked, and Master Dumas once more had his hands on Samuel.

The remorse and anguish Samuel felt at the death of Tay and his family ate at him like acid. He didn’t care whether Master Dumas mated him now. He deserved the pain and degradation he was sure to be subjected to.
But to his surprise, another clan destroyed Master Dumas’s clan, and Samuel found himself free, even if the mate bond still pulsed within his mind, weak as it was. His shock only increased when he was accepted into that clan, and was told they weren’t vampires at all, but dyads.

But still the mating bond held him captive, even being bonded to Kylor, the alpha master of the dyad clan. It took time until Samuel was able to ignore the mating bond that tied him to a dead vampire, and the guilt that continued to eat away at him over the deaths he’d caused would never go away.

Only Kylor knew of Samuel’s humiliation, and knew nothing of Tay and Samuel hoped it stayed that way, even as he began his new life without his mate.

CR Guiliano has been an avid reader since the tender age of four. She discovered gay erotic romance and was so inspired by the sultry, yet touching romances that she added it to her growing genre of writing. She also writes fantasy, paranormal and scifi.

"I have to quiet the voices in my head somehow." She says with a laugh. Many a night she has been awakened by those voices, only to feverishly write down the gist of their clammering so she can flesh out (sometimes literally lol) the story later at a more respectable hour.

In her spare time, she is a single mother living in the desert of Arizona with her son and a multitude of cats...and one very sweet snake.

Without giving away any spoilers, I just wished for a better/happier outcome for Samuel. Maybe another book for him down the line!?!?!??

"He called out, but his mom didn’t stop and before long, he could no longer see her through the trees. His heart lurched, knowing he was being left behind."

I was so glad to discover the author wrote Samuel's story. There were hints given about it in previous installments and since I liked what I had seen of him, I really wanted to get his background. Samuel is a pyrina, a rare type of true vampire that can only feed from their bonded master, and they have empathic and other abilities. Samuel had already warmed my heart in the glimpses I had seen of him and I was positive I would fall for him. I wasn't wrong.

Samuel and his mother are part of Master Dumas's clan and he's about as vile as they come. When he Master Dumas tells Samuel that he's going to force mate him, Samuel says no because Master Dumas isn't his true mate. That doesn't go over so well and Samuel, and his mother run from the clan with the kedges following. His mother outdistances Samuel as all pyrina are much smaller than true vampires, and abandons him. He's lucky to get a ride from Tay, a truck driver, who takes him to his sister's home for the holidays. This would have been perfect except the blood bond with Master Dumas allows him to find Samuel and he kills Tay, his sister and her unborn child, her vampire husband, and their son.

"He deserved whatever came his way for causing the death of an innocent human family, deserved the torture for being the reason his mate was gone from this world. No matter what Master Dumas did to him, it would never be enough to relieve the guilt and anguish."

I was, possibly, even happier than Samuel was when Alpha Master Kylor came, killed Master Dumas, and took Samuel back to his clan. Samuel had just about given up and was determined to waste away and die, regardless of the force feedings he was given. When Kylor saves him, Samuel realizes he owes it to Tay, who he believed was his mate, to not just give up, but to continue on and do what he can to help others in situations similar to his. With Samuel's abilities, he can tell that Kylor is a good, honest dyad, and Samuel is grateful to be safe. Samuel is good for Kylor, too, bringing his humor and teasing, to the clan, and especially making Kylor laugh - a much needed thing!

"Kylor had a sneaky feeling, as he glanced down at the pyrina that Samuel was going to worm his way into everyone’s heart. He was kind and sweet, and honest. As a pyrina, he was instinctively calming and caring. He wasn’t arrogant, though he had a smart mouth on him..... Not including Hillier and Kylor’s kedges, Samuel would be the male closest to him."

Hands-down, this has been my favorite novella of the series, so far. I'm crazy about Samuel and I loved getting his story. Hopefully, the next installment, will find him a mate, or two!

RRR Good but, frustrating

I did not give this book the normal 5 * (stars), like the rest of the series, strictly because of the ending. I finished and just sat there thinking WTH? That Can't be it! I AM enjoying these books immensely, as I do most books by this author. But, I feel like this book didn't have an end, it just stopped. I am hoping the author will remedy this in a future book 🙏! An ending for Samuel, I mean.

*****!!!!!!¡¡¡¡¡¡¡SPOILERS BELOW¡¡¡¡¡¡¡!!!!!!!*******

As I said above, the book was going great. But, if you have read the synopsis, then you have read the book. And that's just sad. This series is about the characters finding their mates, and is a romance novel. Samuel is a vampire, so he only gets one mate. How can Tay be dead! I kept thinking at the end he would be found alive. There is at least half the book or more left after Tay's family is killed. All signs point to their bond starting, and still being there. And if anyone deserves a HEA Samuel does!

If you remove everything from your typical paranormal romance except the flashbacks, tidbits of background information and character descriptions this book would be what is left. There wasn't any plot to speak of and, while interesting, it didn't add to the overall series story arc either. I'm not entirely positive why this story was needed?

My least favourite of the series. It went back in time to before the first two book and was totally confusing. It also didn't have a decent ending so felt incomplete.

Samuel's story

This is Samuel's story. I really liked the empathetic little pyrina vampire who was so helpful in the two previous books in the Vampire Wars series. I am happy that the author chose this way to tell Samuel's story. She went back in his life before he ended up in Master Kylor's clan and showed it in real time instead of using flashbacks. Of course Samuel thought about when he was younger, but he lived many action filled and dangerous months leading up to his joining Master Kylor's clan. Early on in this story we learn about a family very important to Samuel. Everything about them shaped the remainder of his life. Mixed species matings are prominent in this book.

Throughout all four books in this series, I've encountered some very terrible creatures - vicious, nasty clan leaders. As awful as they all are the Master Vampire in this story is the worse of them all. What Samuel ended up suffering was horrifying. His life was beyond desolate. The Master in this book was a disgusting monster. Deranged, frightening, sadistic.

I was the most emotionally affected by this book amongst all those in the Vampire Wars series. I hurt for all Samuel endured. I was enraged by his treatment. The abuse he suffered sometimes seemed over the top, but you realize these are selfish, heartless creatures who only care about themselves. Everyone else is either food or fodder. They craved pleasure and power. Samuel just yearned to be allowed to end his pain.

If you aren't prepared for violence, tragedy, sadness, suicidal thoughts, and a bittersweet ending; then you may not enjoy this story.
