So it's now Total War in The Battle of The Sexes. A fight to Exterminate The Last Man Standing. Or to Exterminate The Last Woman Seducing.
Curious story. Written in 1957 C.E., it's a reflection of the B&W Gender Politics at that time in the Ol' U. S. of the A., when Male Propaganda was trying to Push "Them Women" Back into the Kitchen.
And of course Them Women were Fighting Back, using Their Wilely Feminine Cunning to Undermine the Strength of the Dominant Male.
" "Thanks." The sergeant took a cigarette. He stared at it and the fingers holding it trembled. "Look at it," he said hollowly. "Look at the freakin' thing!"
The lieutenant looked at it, then at the front of the pack. Ruby tips to match your lips, it said under the brand name.
"What are they doing to us?" the sergeant said. He crumpled the cigarette in his fist and threw it down and ground it under his boot. "Isn't it hard enough?" "
Hmm. What's Amusing about this story is that, because it is coming from the Male Perspective, the Men in the story are Portrayed as Victims in this Fight for Female Equality.
And there's a Curious Undercurrent of Violent Chauvinism underlying the Men's actions.
" "Three hundred today," he said aloud. "And one was my personal contribution. My platoon was strung out behind me, and she came up over the hill—"
"Sergeant!"
"She was mine. I got her personally. I aimed slow and held the sight on her. Then I let go. It was almost like—" "
The story does make it clear that the Male Soldiers are just putting the Women Soldiers to Sleep, (or Suspended Animation), Not Killing Them, but still.....the Phrasing of that Passage is a little Odd.
So this story gets 4 Stars not because it's actually a Good story, but because it's a Noteworthy Comment on the Gender Politics of the Time.
I'm not sure if the Author was Intentionally being Ironic, or if it was just an Accident of Storytelling, but either way......It is an Interesting story.
A Recommended Read for those interested in Gender Politics.
