And it all began rather serendipitously. Long ago, as they say, in another time, when fast food hadn't reached our area and the only shopping was what the feed mill offered, I was reading a book that annoyed me .

My husband was lying beside me in bed, watching TV. Turning to him, I sort of petulantly said, "How the hell did this book get published?"

"If you think you're so smart," he replied, with one eye still on the TV, "why don't you write a book?"

So I did. And very badly.

I've since learned how to do, he said, she said, and a great variety of other adverb heavy, sometimes lengthy explanations of why my characters are saying what they're saying, along with finally coming to an understanding of what things like POV means. Point of View for you non-writers}.

Although, I still don't fully comprehend why it matters if you switch POV and I cavalierly disregard it as much as possible. So while my technical skills have hopefully improved, what hasn't changed is my great joy in writing. There's as much pleasure today in listening to my characters talk while I type as fast as I can, as there was the first time I put dialogue to paper--in long-hand, then, in my leather bound sketch-book.

★★★★★! St. John-Duras series, book 2 of 5. Beau St. Jules, the Earl of Rochefort, while on a clandestine mission, encounters a stow-away on his luxury yacht side-tracking him with some sizzling sex!

US EDITION SERIES INFO & REVIEW
St. John-Duras series
Book 2
Formats: Kindle & paperback for both US/UK

The St John-Duras series takes us all across Europe introducing us to the St. John and Duras families. Book 1 starts off with Sinjin St. John, the Duke of Seth one of the most provoking alpha heroes – ever!!! Book 3 in series then continues with the Duras family. General Andre Duras was a side character in book 2 and he is also a very strong, memorable hero.

Susan Johnson aka C.C. Gibbs, is published by different publishers in the US and UK, hence the different titles and covers.

These are stand-alones, but most enjoyed if read in order:
Book 1: (Year 1787)
Sinful (US) / Sinful Dreams (UK)
Book 2: (Year 1800)
Wicked (US) / Wicked Fascination (UK)
Book 3: (Year 1799)
Taboo (US) / The Sweetest Taboo (UK)
Book 4: (Year 1825)
A Touch of Sin (US) / Touch of Sin (UK)
Book 5: (Year 1851)
Legendary Lover (US) / Venus Laid Bare (UK)

BEAU ST. JULES, THE EARL OF ROCHEFORT:
23 years/Lord/Secret agent/playboy/$$$$/black hair/dark eyes.

We first met Beau St. Jules, the Earl of Rochefort, as a child in book 1. His father is Sinjin’s St. John, the most non-committal alpha hero ever. To sum Beau up I’d say he is the “jaded alpha male playBOY hero”. He’s 23 years old and the world is at his feet.

SERENA BLYTHE:
24 years/blond hair/aquamarine eyes/virgin.

When Serena Blythe sneaks on board Beau’s luxury yacht they are trapped together for the voyage. What else is a young libertine to do, but seduce her? Days upon days of sizzling sex.

However Beau is on a clandestine mission, he has a dangerous job to do and the last thing he needs is an entanglement. It’s year 1800 and Napoleon is sweeping Europe. Beau and Serena’s story is full of suspense and intrigue and before we know it Serena is put behind enemy lines.

Captivating plot! Sizzling sex scenes! To-die-for hero! Suspenseful voyage until the last page!

It’s wonderful to get to read about Sinjin and Chelsea (book 1) again. Also in this book, as a significant side character, we are introduced to the legendary General Andre Massena who in book 3 becomes General Andre Duras (last name changed to allow literary license).

I found this book under the shelf pregnancy in historical romance, but it was really the end of the book. I honestly was surprised Serena didn't get pregnant earlier...they were pretty careless on the boat.
When reading it, I thought that they would end up meeting in Florence, but that didn't happen. Rather, they met on Beau's boat that Serena stowed away on. And so much sex constantly. I'm not sure I liked their flirtings and their constant "darlings". It seemed fake, but I guess that was the way it is, because unlike most romance novels, the hero isn't as promiscuous as Beau is. At the point in time, Serena was just a woman he fucked like all the others...and there was no promise or intention of entering a relationship.
I wasn't a fan of him having sex with other women when they parted ways, but it was realistic, considering his personality and past actions, so I wasn't surprised. However, she never had sex with anyone else, and if she had, you know everyone would have shamed her. But not him... *double standards*

And did they say she was 23 and he was 22??? Everyone was like you should marry already to him, and I'm like he's 22... That's so young for marriage.

The ending was annoying...she kept leaving him and refusing to be with him without love and marriage, and she could have seriously missed out because of that.

I don't know how to explain why, but this book was so different from most historical romances. I think the Napoleon side information was too much, to be honest. Beau...omg, he sounded so hot I wanted to fuck him myself. He seemed almost perfect...but then Susan Johnson gave him 2 scenes where he almost forced Serena and it seemed really out of character and I didn't like the dubious consent. Beau probably was a Venus in Sag & Mars in Scorpio...he never committed to any woman until he finally fell in love with Serena, and trust me, it took a long time. She fell in love with him first, or at least Beau wasn't aware of his feelings for a long time.

Also the epilogue was a bit too trivial for me---not sure if that's the word, it just didn't hit right I guess.

Alright!! So I guess I am starting to notice that when I LIKE a book or DISLIKE a book, you seem to get the larger reviews from me. Unfortunately, this is a NOT-SO-MUCH book for me. Again another historical romance,(don't ask. On some kinda obsession with these lately) And I was well into and enjoying this book. UNTIL I realized what a POS this guy was. I mean in the book he sounds hot, don't get me wrong. But my idea of a LOVE match, is one where Beau is NOT a freaking man whore!

He is supposed to be dealing with his feelings. And I get that he doesn't understand them at first, like most men in these books. But he KNOWS that he has feelings for the gal. Why in the hell would he be sleeping with everything that walked in his direction.

At first I was like, Okay... he's trying to get over her, and men have a nice touch about that, but why after every time she leaves does he just turn to other women???? Hmmm? Not until the end does he agree to her demands, and even then, its right after he's had a shag.

GRRRR! And then if she laughed in a circle of prospects he got all pissy and was like, You're mine! Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!

Not man bashing! I swear. its just when I'm reading a book, I don't want the main character to piss me off more than anything. All in all, Miss Blythe is way better off without her Beau.

Not my kind of book (but still read it until the end)...
This book is a piece of crap for me.
For erotica, it's like watching porn XXX... but for Romence, I cannot see the thrill of it...
If you INTO porn, this book is a delicious read for you, but if you're INTO Romance, don't give yourself too much hope for romantic story...
It's jus me being stupid reading this ....aaaarrghhhhh...... (pssst..but I enjoy the lovemaking scene as well)... LOL

o I make you confuse? I confused my self too.... hahahahhaa

Definitely didn't enjoy this book. Hero was absolutely awful. He slept with other women not once but THREE TIMES after developing feelings for the heroine. One escapade was a week of endless sex with a countess and her maid in order to "screw them so much he would forget about Serena." And he admitted it worked! Sigh. The second time was a woman he was given for the night as a prize for rescuing the heroine from her kidnapper (sounds weird, but it does work out that way)... surprisingly he forgets he's slept with this woman he's been given once before, but no matter, he promises to make it up to her. But regardless of how many other woman he carelessly sleeps with he still continues to track down Serena and force himself on her when she initially refuses. It's pitiful really how little of a fight Serena issues. Verbally she says "no" but Beau never accepts that answer, so he forces himself on her and she eventually submits. Then they part for some reason, he screws someone else and tracks her down again. It was absolutely ridiculous.
He was absolutely disgusting in the beginning and the heroine didn't change him one bit. I would say she deserves better, but the way Johnson paints her as this spineless, vapid, sex crazed idiot, maybe she doesn't.

What a bodice ripper. It was spicy, but also not very hot? There was LOTS of seggs. In fact, this reminds of me how the first guy I ever sexted with got sexts that sounded like old bodice rippers and he made fun of me 😩🤣 and for all the sex in this the chemistry was meh. Banter was repetitive. He could stop sleeping with other women! Was pretty jealous/ possessive, especially towards the end. I just didn’t love this one. I did like that he was young. 22. That was different. And that she was a year older. But I still just really like Susan Johnson 🤷🏻‍♀️

This book probably could have been a 5 if it would wouldn't have had so much war history there at the middle end. She lost me in the battles and the details of history. A tish is always nice but more than that nah I really don't care, sorry. Guess I'm too blonde.

I lost count of how many other women the hero slept with after being with the heroine. Of course the heroine was a virgin until the hero and never slept with anyone else. Ugh.

Honestly this could have been a five star read for me.

I badly want to give a higher rating. I really do. Only that the hero slept with other women during his separation with the heroine. Given his character and the situation, I get why he acted the way he did. Though it does not mean that I particularly like it at all. I suppose what I find so seriously disappointing was when he still chose to sleep with another woman that last time, too.

This could have been a solid fave. I honestly love how this was written. I felt it. Love their sensual scenes, their travel, the banter, how they were perceived. I don't know how else to express how I adore their adventure especially prior to any separation. Just that this is one of the books I read almost nonstop to the point that I realized it was morning already. I highlighted so much from this book.

“Let’s stay here forever,” Serena whispered, her chin on his chest, her eyes summer-sky blue and adoring.

I can understand the other reviews as Beau did not seem like a man in love to me. I felt he was too young - 22 years old. After running around with women for years he suddenly is in love. I do enjoy Ms Johnsons writing and have read this more than once but I do favor her other historical books more that this one. Her writing is always good. This book has lots of steam and was quite fast paced as far as relationships and falling in love goes.

I didn't like the H and the h, she was a strange kind of virgin-no virgin, she seemed a modern independent girl, not a woman of the 1800, and he was a petulant child fucking everything in skirt, before-in the meanwhile- and after meting her.
I liked the idea the a wonderful sex is not love, and that they build their love story day by day.

Toaletu a hygienu v knize neřešili.

Too much history and sex

If you are looking for romance this not your book, most of the time is about history in excruciating details and the guy’s sexual
prowess which is very hard to believe, in other words is a porn book with very little romance and a lot about Napoleon and his cohorts

Too long, and the book fell apart at the end, just like Sinful. I didn’t quite believe Serena’s character, either. She *felt* modern and instilled very little compassion on me. Also, I couldn’t quite understand why Beau was so against marriage? The nun thing was never resolved and I kinda didn’t care. The writing was pretty good, but the plot meandered and we didn’t need napoleon.

This book was 1/2 sex, 1/4 Napoleon and the war and 1/4 the couple. I skipped alot of the book. It wasn’t horrible, just very long winded. And I hated that she married him. I actually wanted her to find someone else. He was a nice guy but an absolute cheat!

So I really hated how this book started and ended up skimming it then sort of reading it backwards because once I got past the initial chapters, loved it. I also loved the first one. They are both different and the h's love sex.

This was an enjoyable hot and steamy historical which I enjoyed more than the first in the series.
This was only my second read from this author and I've been pleasantly surprised. The historical elements are well-researched, the characters refreshing and the steam-o-meter sky high.

Becoming a governess after the death of her father, Serena Blythe has dreams of becoming a painter. After years of saving, she is about to depart for Italy to study when the ship on which she has booked passage is hijacked with all her money and worldly possessions.

Determined to reach Florence as planned, Serena stows away on a ship belonging to the dangerously handsome Beau St. Jules, London's most notorious rogue. The Earl of Rochefort had already surpassed his father's reputation as a libertine, and that's saying something, considering his father is Sinjin St. John of . After all, Beau's nickname among the ladies is "Glory" and it doesn't pertain to his height.

Although the story line doesn't contain as many twists, turns, or subplots as other historical-romance novels I've read, it certainly makes a thorough exploration of the character's thoughts, sexual discoveries and passionate intrigues. I think the only problem I had with this story was the age of Beau -- I think for him to have that much sexual history and still that much desire for variety is unrealistic. Most of the books about such rakes are usually about those in their late 20's at least. Even Beau's father Sinjin was 30 when he finally gave in to one woman.

This book is extremely sexual, though the romance/relationship leaves something to be desired.
Very very wicked.

Review:
One word to explain this book: SEXY!
I mean, wow, this book sizzles.
I am a sucker for romance novels, though I do feel there are way too many set the regency era, but that is because I love Vikings.
The characters are perfect for each other, which adds to the awe chemistry they share.
Serena is a woman who knows what she wants out of life and Beau is the typical man who thinks he knows what he wants (money, sex, no strings, nothing to hold him down or hold him back) But in the end, she shows him a thing or two about love and he comes chasing after her.

The only thing that kept me from giving this book a 5 of 5 is that I did feel that the book focus more on the physical relationship between the hero and heroine, rather than their emotional relationship. If had expected that when I began to read the book, I don't think I would have been disapointed. In the end, a romance novel is just that, a romance novel and the love scenes should add to the plot not be the plot - there is an entirely different genre for those books (which do have a special place on my bookshelf).
I have read a couple of Susan Johnson's books and if you are looking for a regency romance with spice, you should check out her work.
