I found this book under the shelf pregnancy in historical romance, but it was really the end of the book. I honestly was surprised Serena didn't get pregnant earlier...they were pretty careless on the boat.
When reading it, I thought that they would end up meeting in Florence, but that didn't happen. Rather, they met on Beau's boat that Serena stowed away on. And so much sex constantly. I'm not sure I liked their flirtings and their constant "darlings". It seemed fake, but I guess that was the way it is, because unlike most romance novels, the hero isn't as promiscuous as Beau is. At the point in time, Serena was just a woman he fucked like all the others...and there was no promise or intention of entering a relationship.
I wasn't a fan of him having sex with other women when they parted ways, but it was realistic, considering his personality and past actions, so I wasn't surprised. However, she never had sex with anyone else, and if she had, you know everyone would have shamed her. But not him... *double standards*
And did they say she was 23 and he was 22??? Everyone was like you should marry already to him, and I'm like he's 22... That's so young for marriage.
The ending was annoying...she kept leaving him and refusing to be with him without love and marriage, and she could have seriously missed out because of that.
I don't know how to explain why, but this book was so different from most historical romances. I think the Napoleon side information was too much, to be honest. Beau...omg, he sounded so hot I wanted to fuck him myself. He seemed almost perfect...but then Susan Johnson gave him 2 scenes where he almost forced Serena and it seemed really out of character and I didn't like the dubious consent. Beau probably was a Venus in Sag & Mars in Scorpio...he never committed to any woman until he finally fell in love with Serena, and trust me, it took a long time. She fell in love with him first, or at least Beau wasn't aware of his feelings for a long time.
Also the epilogue was a bit too trivial for me---not sure if that's the word, it just didn't hit right I guess.
