This Thing Called Love

Rate this book
New York City self-help editor Olivia Marks faces her toughest assignment yet: parenthood. When her sister dies in a car accident, the career-oriented Olivia suddenly becomes the guardian to her four-week-old niece, Annabelle. She also becomes a challenge for Annabelle’s uncle, Brad Rushford, an old flame whose gorgeous green eyes bring Olivia’s fevered memories rushing back.

As the two circle each other in their small hometown of Mirror Lake, Olivia finds that Brad is as sexy and charming as ever—and now he’s the darling of the town as he expands his successful lakefront restaurant. Is his flirting designed to get serious, or to lower Olivia’s defenses to give up guardianship? When she finds out about the turreted, brick Victorian house Brad tours with a realtor and an attractive, no-strings-attached reporter—the same place where he and Olivia shared an unforgettable night years ago—Olivia wonders if he’s looking for a future with her, or planning to start a new life with someone else.

In the first heartwarming Mirror Lake story, steamy trysts and surprising twists lead two people to a future neither one expected.

2.75 I read this via Kindle Unlimited [audio].

This was a cute little story. I recently watched "Life As We Know It" and I thought this storyline would be similar. It was...and wasn't. This isn't really about Olivia raising her niece with the baby's uncle....It was more about them reconnecting after a failed high school relationship.

This wasn't what I had hoped it would be, but I can't say I am disappointed, because I did think it was a super cute, adorable read. I did listen to the audio of it, and I actually do wonder if I would have actually finished if I had read it. It was pretty slow going, and I felt like there was a lot of time wasted on recapping the past, and long winded details on everything.

I liked it for the story it was, it was another one of those "Hallmark Movie" type things - and I really like my Hallmark Movies sometimes <3

I received this book free from Kindle First.

When her sister dies tragically in a car accident and leaves her 4 week old daughter to her care, Olivia's life is turned upside down. She returns to her small hometown and her high school romance is rekindled.

I actually enjoyed this book for the first 60%. It was around that point that I felt that the cheese had been turned up from about a 2 or 3 to, like, 7 or 8. It was really cheesy in the second half. I know all romance novels are completely predictable and that's even sort of the point of them, but this wasn't even fun predictable. It was flat predictable, a little boring, a little stale.

This reads like smut without the sex. We are told over and over about this great romance Olivia and Brad had but all we are ever shown is that they had a lot of electrifying sex. We don't get one mushy story about how they met or their first kiss or their first fight - just remembrance after remembrance of this sex or that sex.

Anyway, this wasn't terrible as romance novels go in that it was well written and well edited, I just didn't particularly care for the story itself.

This was just an ok read. The Author was in tell mode the whole time, making it difficult to connect with the H and h. The secondary characters had more depth and were more entertaining.

I would pass on this one.

This Thing Called a book

Okay so I got this as one of Amazon's first reads stories. It was...okay, not my favorite, but not terrible. I remember picking this one out because it reminded me of It Had to be Him, a book I had thoroughly enjoyed. This one...not so much. I mean it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good either. This Thing Called Love just fell flat for me.

The author can right, don't get me wrong. I don't think that was the problem I had with the story. It was the actual book itself that I didn't like, meaning the plot-line. It was so boring. I felt like it went nowhere. It was the constant internal conflict throughout the story. I hate him/her. No I love him/her. The whole angst and supposed sexual tension just got old after a while. I wanted something to happen, but it never did!I wanted to give up, but I kept telling myself something is bond to happen.

Plus, the characters were so wishy-washy. One minute, Brad was saying "I'm no good for her and I'm gonna end it" and the next moment he's trying to sleep with her. Good job staying out of her life. The problems and resolutions were just so sudden and inconsistent. I just didn't understand them at all. I basically hated Brad and Olivia. Even the moments were I was supposed to be "rooting for their love," I was cringing through it. What love?! I didn't see any love. All I heard was that they had lots of good sex. I never say any real flashbacks to romantic moments, to times of happiness and joy. All I knew was that the first time they had sex-wait, no- the first time they made love was in an old abandon Victorian house. Okay...What about the first time you met? Or the first time you said "I love you"? Oh wait that was when you were having sex. Right. Romantic. I'm sorry, but I just didn't see any epic love story between the two. I kept being told there was one, but I never saw it. Real disappointment.

Overall, I didn't like it. Adult novel lovers and hopeless romantics might enjoy it, but if your not one of those, don't bother. It really wasn't that great. Enjoy!

Miranda is one of my go-to authors for a feel good story. This was still enjoyable but it wasn't my favorite of hers. I still look forward to reading more of the series.

Loved It!!

This Thing Called Love by Miranda Liasson is a romance readers dream! Hot hero, strong heroine, an adorable baby who needs a home, and a small town full of busybodies with good intentions. I love a good reunion tale and this heartwarming one hit all the right marks. Tough choices abound, and the characters grow and learn from their past making for a sweet, happily ever after. Enjoy!

What does a re-kindled romance with the one that got away; conquering self-doubting demons from the past and one adorable little baby have in common? They all come together to make a wonderful debut novel This Thing Called Love by Golden Heart winner Miranda Liasson.

Olivia Marks vowed to make her success far away from her hometown of Mirror Lake, a place that held nothing but painful reminders of past failures and thoughts of never being good enough.

After the death of her sister and brother-in-law, the New York self-help editor finds herself back in her hometown as appointed guardian of her four-week-old niece, Annabelle.

All the self-help books in the world can’t prepare Olivia for instant parenthood. She’s got two weeks to figure it all out. To make matters worse Annabelle’s sexy green eyed restaurant entrepreneur uncle, Brad Rushford, Olivia’s first and only love, feels it would be better for everyone if Annabelle stays in Mirror Lake instead of moving back to New York with Olivia.

Letting Olivia go was the biggest mistake Brad ever made. Bound by financial and family burdens and convinced he would only drag her down; Brad had no choice but to let Olivia go.

Annabelle is all Brad has left of his brother and he’ll do whatever is necessary to secure her future, even if it means fighting his still powerful attraction to Olivia.

Ms. Liasson weaves a delightful story, with a cast of enjoyable and well-developed characters that perfectly capture that small hometown feel. The writing is smart and witty. The plot has a good balance, with just the right amount of twists and turns that kept me turning the page. Honestly, she had me at the first chapter when baby Annabelle has a diaper malfunction in the middle of the grocery store…can you say clean up in aisle one!

This book made me happy. It gave me that warm fuzzy feeling that reminded me why I love romance and HEA (Happily Ever After). And with the hint of more Mirror Lake romances (Yay us!), I think we’ll have the opportunity to be reading much more from the fabulous Miranda Liasson.

I received this book for free through the Kindle First program and found it to be a fast and easy read with an okay storyline about Olivia, a workaholic living in New York City. Olivia's life is upset when her sister and brother-in-law die and Olivia is named in her sister's will to raise their baby. Olivia goes back to her hometown for a few weeks to figure out what she's going to do about her infant niece and runs into Brad, her old high school boyfriend who also happened to be her sister's brother-in-law. I thought the plot was interesting, but the book was too cheesy and predictable for me. A lot of the issues were manufactured because of lack of communication. Also, it didn't develop the relationship between Olivia and Brad well enough for me. First they hate each other, then they all of a sudden love each other with no real development or substance going into the relationship. We kept being told about the fact that they previously dated, but we never really found out any details about that relationship, other than details about their love life. This book was decent, but so, so cheesy.

First in the Mirror Lake series, in which book editor Olivia Marks faces a challenge she never expected: mothering her late sister's month-old-daughter. When she goes home from NYC to see the baby and get to know her, old flame and now restauranteur Brad Rushford confronts her about taking the baby away from Mirror Lake. After all, he's the baby's uncle and the rest of the family would love for Olivia to stick around. But can she give up her job or arrange to go parttime or something like that with her editing duties? How she finally confronts what she needs to do or with whom makes for a great start to a new series.

DNF 42% into the book, in the middle of chapter 9 because I don't want to read one more word from this selfish asshole of an MMC.

The MMC and FMC's siblings were married and passed away leaving behind a baby that the FMC got. She's a career woman in NYC and the MMC doesn't think she'll be an appropriate caregiver for the baby so he tries to manipulate her into giving it to his brother and sister in law (who never once expressed that they want another child to take care of, having 3 under 4 themselves).

I cannot believe the arrogance of this man. He had me hopping mad throughout the book, I mean seriously, how can one man be that pigheaded? Sorry, I think I started this review a little strong, but I don't take it back.

Shopping in a grocery store with a screaming four week old in her cart was not how Olivia Marks imaged spending her day. You would think that being an editor for self-help books would make her an expert at multitasking, but it seems that all that reading went right out her head.

Olivia is a career oriented woman who was never ready for the role that was forced on her, a role many women welcome, maybe even anticipate: that of becoming a parent. Her sister and her sister's husband died a car accident and they appointed Oliver as their daughter's guardian.

With this twist of fate, Oliver is now the mother of a four week old and must take time off her job in order to figure everything out. Filled with grief for losing her sister, Oliver can barely put one foot in front of the other let alone handle a baby and the baby's uncle.

An uncle who was an old boyfriend, whose smokey green eyes still stir emotions in her that has no business of ever stirring for him again, the same old boyfriend that is determined to take her niece away from her.

Brad Rushford is reeling from the loss of his brother who he helped raise when their parents died. At least he has a part of his brother in the form of his niece but even that was snatched away from him. His brother and his wife gave his niece to Olivia who works all the time and lives in the city.

He knows what is best for his niece and that is not for her to be taken away from most of her family and stuck with nannies to take care of her whilst Olivia goes off to work. He has a plan to make Olivia give up guardianship of his niece. He plans to do this by encouraging her doubts about raising a baby and he is not above using a little seduction to get what he wants.

Would Olivia fall for his tricks? Would the responsibility be too much to handle for Olivia? Would Brad actually go through with his plan? Find out in the first installment of the Mirror Lake Series, This Thing Called Love.

+Miranda Liasson wrote a lovely book about the struggles of becoming an unexpected parent. Olivia was so strong and confident and then she lost my respect at the end of the book. How dare she do what I never thought she would do in a million years.

Olivia was the sister that had a career in mind and went for it. Her sister, on the other hand, wanted to get married and become a mom. Olivia wanted that as well, once upon a time, but the love of her life gave up on her and that made Olivia's dream of a happy ever after die a heartbreaking death.

Her coping mechanism was to throw herself into her career. She invested so much of herself to her job that when she was at risk of losing it, she did not know what to do with herself. She allowed her job to define who she is and that can never be good.

Brad was a big old jerk. He has not seen nor heard from Olivia in many years and he immediately comes to the conclusion that she cannot take care of a child and that she would be cold and stand-offish with the baby.

You would think that he would want to have the baby for himself, but nooooooooooooo, he had his turn at fatherhood by raising his brothers, what he plans to do is make Olivia give up the baby and then dump the baby with his brother who already has three kids, without talking to them first I might add. Isn't he dreamy.

I could not warm up to Brad at all. He was mean, selfish and pig-headed in his ways and thinks that he is always right. He would kick a puppy when it is hurt, that may sound extreme, but that is what he did to Olivia and I can not forgive him for that, ever.

Yeah they fell in love and yeah they got together, (it would not be a love story if they did not) but I do not think that they should have ended up together.

The story was strong and since the book is about a baby, you would think that the baby would be mentioned more. From the description from the book, I gather that there was a baby and two people were fighting over her. It did not have any tender movement with the baby.

The relationship between Olivia and her niece would have been more believable it had scenes where Olivia was stressing out on what to do and by trial and error figure out how to fix the problem. I could not connect with the baby since I felt as if she was just put in the book as a reason for Olivia and Brad to have a conflict of interest.

Another thing that displeased me in the book was the constant repetition and back and forth of their thoughts. Olivia and Brad would realize that they still have feeling for each other and then all of a sudden, then they don't; then to just realize again that they have feelings for each other. It got really confusing for me with their acceptance and then denial of their feelings.

The book was interesting to read and I enjoyed it, but the book was missing many key ingredients to make it amazing. It was missing a connection with the baby, justification for Brad's poor opinion of Olivia and more grief for their dceased siblings.

I mean their would be one sentance of how they miss their sibling and that was it and they would seem totally cool with life. That did not sit well with me. I wonder if the second book in the series would make me connect with the characters more? I guess I have to wait and find out.

This Thing Called Love: A familiar beginning: High powered, big city, workaholic is given custody of a baby. (Baby Boom with Diane Keaton.) While the premise may seem the same, that’s where it ends.

Olivia Marks life turns into total chaos when her sister and brother-in-law are both killed in an accident. She leaves her New York job as an editor of self-help books for two weeks to collect her four-week-old niece, and to figure out how to make her life work. Her long days and weekends are filled with work. She has no time for a personal life, definitely no time for a baby, besides she knows nothing about raising one. What had her sister been thinking leaving Annabelle with her?

The worst part is she must go back to her hometown and deal with the baby’s paternal uncle, Bradley Rushford. They’d been desperately in love ten years before but separated when she went off to college. She had dreams of a big city future and he’d been anchored at home in Mirror Lake with financial and family responsibilities.

Their chemistry heats up to fever pitch as soon as they see each other. But Brad has an ulterior motive for getting close to her again - to take the baby away from her.

This is Miranda Liasson’s debut novel. She blends her wonderful descriptions in with her enchanting characters. It’s fun and heart breaking and has the perfect ending. We all know the boy will get the girl, but it’s how they get there.

There is good reason she won the Golden Heart award for it. It’s that good.

I DNF'd this. I got tired of the fact that while there were serious issues around these two, whenever they were in each others company all they seemed to do was think lusty thoughts about the other. The other thing they did was constantly reminisce, mostly as a sexual highlight reel of all their good times 10 years before. Oh yeah, they also followed that up with thinking how bitter they were over the way things ended. Seriously? Both of your siblings just died and one of you now has their 4 week old baby to learn to take over and lust is on your mind to this degree? The back and forth was ridiculous.

Plus, I got the feeling that it was going to be one of those books where after the guy breaks up with the girl he sleeps with everything in site (which we are told he did) and I got the feeling that if she dated at all it was guys who couldn't measure up. Didn't get far enough to see if she spent the time pining over the guy or what but already it was off to a bad start.

I was sick when I read it and it possibly made me more cranky. I still don't think it would have been for me even if I hadn't been sick but I might have given it longer before DNF'ing it.

Once high school sweethearts, Brad and Olivia eventually went their separate ways. She went off to college and he stayed behind in Mirror Lake to raise his younger siblings. But with the recent loss of his brother and her sister, their tiny niece needs them. Much to Brad’s chagrin, workaholic Olivia heads back to Mirror Lake to fulfill her sister’s request that she raise baby Annabelle.

I love the tension that builds between this couple as they try do what’s best for their niece and at the same time figure out how to safeguard their hearts. The love story is equal parts heartwarming and sexy. It turns out Mirror Lake is a magical place. It’s the perfect place for Brad and Olivia to bury old hurts and rekindle old flames.

Love, love, loved This Thing Called Love. I can’t wait for the next Mirror Lake story by Miranda Liasson!

Repetitive

The characters in this book were both so stubborn it became quite annoying. One minute they are resisting tearing each other's clothes off and 2 lines later they were yelling at one another. Just admit you have feelings for one another already. It was just a repetitive back and forth, neither could make a decision. It became old by the middle of the book. I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would

This was a bit different than the usual. Olivia is forced to come back to her hometown after her sister's death, where she also learns she is to take guardianship of her niece.

She runs into old flame Brad, who just happens to be her sister's brother-in-law. He wants the baby to stay there where her family can take care of her rather than O taking her back to NYC.

I like this; it was different than the usual.

Great book

I really enjoyed this book, from the moment I began to read it it captures my attention. The action and love connection begin from the beginning when Olivia picks up the baby and is standing in the checkout line with an inconsolable crying baby and her ex love of her life behind her.

I wasn't expecting much when I downloaded this book. I was hoping for a quick, cozy read along the lines of Debbie Macomber or Robynn Carr. This definitely was a quick read, but I found nothing interesting or compelling about either of the main characters. I don't mind predictable reads, but give me some interesting characters.
