Wow I was pleasantly surprised! It's a great book written by Bradley Nickell. It has so many twists and turns you will love it. It definitely shows some major cracks in our justice system. Daimon made a career out of being a repeat Offender. I would highly recommend to all avid true crime readers.

There are some criminals out there that are habitual hard-core offenders. Nickell, a former Las Vegas detective in the covert unit known as Repeat Offender Program, or ROP, shares with us one such character, one Daimon Monroe, who at the time of the trial documented in this true-crime story had forty-eight prior convictions.
Unfortunately for Monroe, the threats made to the lives of several witnesses, Chief Deputy District Attorney DiGiacomo, and Detective Nickell were all taken very seriously because they were all overheard via phone calls made from Monroe’s jail cell. Nickell spent hours listening to recorded calls, deciphering the codes used with the help of co-conspirators, including his long-time girlfriend. They were even able to get a con to wire up and tape a murder-for-hire request.
Nickell weaves an interesting tale, as fascinating as any novel and jam-packed with detail. We get to witness the shenanigans of this master crook and how he works the system in an effort to finagle his way out of jail. Nickell gives us as much of a feel as to tease the taste buds without making it a how-to-stay-out-of-jail storyline. By the time they raid Monroe’s house he has amassed several million in stolen goods, much of it in storage sheds, too. Like most criminals he protests his innocence and blames the police, hence the death threats that finally helped put him away for life.
It is still a good thing to read that there are people out there, in the form of police officers, who are still dedicated to protecting the people that are victimized by repeat offenders like Daimon Monroe, and that in a situation like this one, the system still works.

Amazing

This book is a story of a habitual criminal that is classified as a Repeat Offender. Bradley Nickels a detective in the ROP in Las Vegas for 15 years takes you through the story of Daimon Monroe and his accomplices. It seems as many times that Diamon has been arrested. He can't stop. It sounds as if it's a high they get in committing these crimes as a drug addict gets in obtaining drugs. This is a true story and true accounts of the dedication and hard work the, ROP (Repeat Offender Program) the police department. The swat team, the justice system in bringing down these criminals and taking them off the street. Enjoyed this book immensely.

“Early one evening, I left the Detective Bureau and soon noticed the same compact car had been in my mirror for a few blocks. A silver-colored Toyota, beat-up looking with no front license plate, driven by two Hispanic-looking men. I wasn’t sure if they were following me, but I didn’t want to take a chance. My nerves were shot. I’d been dreading this exact thing for weeks.”

Whoa, how’s that for an attention-grabbing opening paragraph?! It sure pulled me right in. The next paragraph shows that Detective Nickell was prepared for what he expected might happen…with a shotgun across his lap.

Nickell, as the narrator, obviously writing in first person, is, of course, the main character. But master-thief Daimon Monroe is always present in one form or another, along with his partners-in-crime. Monroe is as narcissistic as they come. A man with neither conscience nor remorse. He delighted in thumbing his nose at the law, playing a ‘Catch me if you can…I’ll deny everything’ game. But the overly self-confident, egotistical Daimon hadn’t counted on the bulldog tenacity of one Las Vegas Police Detective named Bradley Nickell.

REPEAT OFFENDER is a True Crime novel that takes the reader through the years-long–even life-threatening–pursuit to take this habitual criminal down.

I guess, in a way, this could be called a legal thriller. The author takes us step-by-step through his investigation. The long grueling, endless hours spent listening to recorded phone calls from inmates to the outside, for example. These guys know they’re being recorded but they need that outside communication. So they invent a special code when they discuss ‘’’business,’ and it’s up to our detective to decipher them. Along with Det. Nickell, we sit in court rooms listening to testimonies for both defense and prosecution. We read his own testimony when called on. We wait, along with him, biting our nails, for the juries to return with their verdicts. Yes, I used plurals. Our man Daimon, so self-assured, loves litigation.

I like court room scenes. It’s fascinating to me to ‘watch’ each attorney try to one-up the other with their arguments, examination and cross-exam, opening and closing statements.

Would I recommend this book? Oh, yes. We have the privilege of seeing behind the scene police work. Their tenacious pursuit for justice to protect you and me, our loved ones, our neighborhoods, communities, and cities from predators like Daimon Monroe.

I'm probably giving Daimon Monroe exactly the kind of notoriety he thrives on when I say that I was captivated by his crime spree. I'd never heard of him before reading this book, though I imagine he was, and perhaps still is, notorious in the Las Vegas area.

This is a comprehensive book. The author is one of the cops who tracked Monroe from early on. Nickell takes us through the investigation, shares transcripts of prison phone calls, and gives us a behind-the-scenes view of all the subsequent trials. While Nickell's writing is straight forward and easy to read, the content is sometimes weighed down by all the details. This can become cumbersome and repetitious. Despite that, I found the case compelling enough that this aspect didn't bother me too much.

The one thing that did niggle at me was Nickell's clear biases. His religious beliefs bleed into the writing, at times making himself sound a bit too virtuous. Also, he makes several faulty blanket statements. For instance, many times throughout the book he blames attorneys for our faulty justice system. Whatever your opinion on lawyers, this is certainly not an issue that rests entirely on their shoulders. In his closing summation, he states that society needs a religious revival as a crime deterrent. Again, this is a nonsensical argument. Most people know that God seems to be most popular within prisons. Still, those inmates get out of prison and go on to commit more crimes, despite their proclaimed love of God.

With nonfiction of this sort, I prefer that an author keeps his/her biases and beliefs in check. Still, I have much respect for the work Nickell put into tracking Daimon Monroe over the years. His own life must have been consumed by Monroe, and I'm sure that took its toll. This is a fascinating story of a criminal who flew under the radar for far too long, and might have continued on had it not been for the dedication of Nickell and his coworkers.

This book is about the capture and court trials of the most prolific thief in Las Vegas history. It is written by the cop who caught him and uncovered just how extensive his criminal enterprise had been, and it is a fascinating read. One thing that makes it so fascinating is that the story unfolds chronologically; it is like we are watching Detective Nickell and those who worked with him investigate and figure things out as they are doing it. The book is thorough without being cluttered and gives an inside view of the processes of criminal investigation and courtroom trials. We also get a look at the self-justification that goes on in the minds of some career criminals. After reading the book, I feel like I know some of the people who were involved in the whole process, especially the D.A., the primary criminal, and the person who turned out to be the most important witness. I enjoyed reading it and heartily recommend it.

So as I mentioned, my personal preference heavily weighed on my opinion of this story. I listened to it on Audible during my gym sessions, so it kept me amused but I can't say that I actually 'enjoyed' it. The story itself was very well written, almost to the point where it was sounding like a fiction novel, however. The third POV was a tad on the annoying side because it felt the the author was 'big noting' himself too often and referring to himself more than necessary.

But like I said, it's not my crime preference. I know that there have been many people who have enjoyed it, and I'd urge you to read the blurb and other people reviews and purchase a sample before relying on my opinion. Because it's just that, my own opinion. I can't give it a rating on the dislike of criminal alone, that would be gross unfair. So my rating reflects that as well as the writing style and ability to keep me going and not quit!

Very real

This book is concrete evidence on how the system bows down to criminals. How they get chance after chance with help from the system to change their lives. It also shows how victims/survivors are often left to put their own lives back together with little or no help. I enjoyed reading this. It helped me realize others feel the same way I do about this very broken system and how much it needs to change. Habitual offenders usually don't change and don't deserve to ever see the light of day.

Bradley Nickell allows readers to take an in-depth behind the scenes look at the investigation, capture, and prosecution of a narcissistic criminal and his network. Forget the network television crime shows, Repeat Offender is gritty and real. I could not put it down and Nickell does a wonderful job telling his story. I recommend this to anybody that enjoys reading suspenseful real life crime stories. Thumbs up.

Repeat Offender by Bradley Nickell. This is a great book. A riveting true story of one of the most prolific criminals in Vegas. I am amazed at how long he got away with so many crimes & how he was able to obtain so much. Thanks to detective Nickell's hard work this repeat offender was brought to justice.

For those who love watching Law & Order on tv, pick up this book. It's an amazing tale, and being unsure of the outcomes kept me on the edge of my seat. Great pacing with interestingly detailed descriptions of the process and procedures.

True Crime

It is difficult to believe this book, though I know it is true. It is the story of a career criminal who actually stole millions of dollars of goods. From what was recovered, it is seen that he was intelligent and careful. However, he came across as a defendant as reckless and paranoid. It is an interesting book.

I am a staunch believer that police departments should have Repeat Offender Units. I believe such a unit would prevent a lot of crimes that are committed by career criminals. The legal systems have twists and turns that hopefully brings justice for all (the victims and the criminal). However it doesn’t always work out the way it should.
It is great when we have a detective like Bradley Nickell who knows the justice system inside out and the ins and outs of criminals and their repeat behavior. In my mind, he is a super cop who plays a positive role in the lives of the victim, while he also manages to have compassion and hope for the criminal. There are repeat offenders who become very wealthy from their crimes and will do anything and everything to keep anyone from ending their lucrative lifestyle with whatever means it takes.
I like how Bradley Nickel takes us under his wing (so to speak) and let us see what goes on behind the scenes. It is a riveting story written by a very smart and talented writer, who happens to have been a copy for 25 years.

I'm beginning to believe that the system, it's judges, attorneys, cops and corrections officers are worse than the criminals themselves.

This book is a disgusting egotistical rampage by someone not worthy of the People's trust.
- those detained are systematically harassed on unrelated charges
- They are lied to by the police.
- Friends, roommates, spouses, are paid to inform on them. Threats are made by the police against the witness.
- A Citizen's Fifth Amendment Right to unreasonable search is denied by having their conversations recorded.
- God help someone who goes in as an innocent man. There's no way he is coming out as one.
- Police fail to report their own colleagues who supply confidential information un-ethically and illegally.
- Prisoners are driven to stalking officers, committing violence against them and ultimately, in frustration, killing themselves.
- The accused are ridiculed and singled out for poor treatment based on their personal appearance, by the police and the judges.
- All these things are as confessed by a "highly thought of detective"
-All of these acts are committed by the arrogant bastard who wrote the book and his buddies.
- Braggards like the asshole who wrote this should be fired from The People's work, and brought up on charges themselves.
- a Strict code of ethics should be passed by the legislature and encoded in the statutes.
- Judges should never be allowed to pull favors for their friends.

First I want to thank the author, Bradley Nickell, for accommodating me when purchasing my physical copy of Repeat Offender. Once I learned that proceeds of the sale of his book would be going towards victims of abuse, I wanted to ensure the most money went towards his cause—a cause close to my own heart.

This review is long overdue. I read it back in October 2015, but it has stuck with me. We can read / watch all the crime movies, television shows, and books we want, and they do usually use advisors. But to read a book that comes directly from someone who has dedicated his life to serve and protect cannot compare. It is well written, documented, and gives a harrowing behind the scenes look at not only the criminal mind, but just how much police officers put their lives on the line for us—their families lives. I have the utmost respect for them, from when I was saved as a child, to what they continue to do when faced with today’s adversities.

When I learned this book might be optioned for film, I was excited. I still think books are better than the movies, but this is one I would love to see on the big screen. A definite must read!

Thank you, Officer Nickell, for your continued service and dedication.

It was interesting to read about the multiple offenders and cases involved in this book. It was also interesting to see more of the less-thrilling behind-the-scenes action police take.

Some of the author's views rubbed me the wrong way as well, but hey, they are his views and its his book - I don't have to like them. I recognize and respect that. And his views always made me think, whether I agreed or not.

The book also dragged at times. I don't know that quite so many blow-by-blow conversations needed to exist, and there were times it felt as though perhaps things could have used a less thorough summation.

Still, on the whole, worth a read.

This is a very interesting case that makes one wonder how Daimon got away with so much for so long. Nickell lays out the case in a clear, well-paced manner,
but he's inappropriately preachy at times.

Kevin Pierce is a perfect choice to read this audiobook. The book is written in first person and the listener can hear Nickell's voice in Pierce's narration.
He keeps the narrative moving and dialog is easy to follow.

NOTE: I received a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for this unbiased review.

As a true crime genre lover, I found this book fascinating. Bradley Nickell's conversational style and liberal use of dialogue as well as short chapters (often just several pages in length) all contribute to a fast-paced journey.

Nickell manages to deliver tons of facts and details without ever sounding tedious. On the contrary, this piercing look into the deviant mind of a repeat offender--who graduates from theft to solicitation for murder--and the dedicated pursuit of a tireless law enforcement officer is a rapid ride well worth taking.

Highly recommend with FIVE STARS. Anything less would be the equivalent of taking a gallon of house paint and smearing it all over a Picasso, then accusing Picasso of being a con artist.

Or ... labeling all doctors as 'quacks' who abuse prescription drugs and cheat on their spouses with hospitalized patients.

Or ... saying that all school teachers are illiterate @$$holes who drink on the job while threatening students with failing grades.

A good true story to read.....

Interesting look from a Detective's side

Although i live 2 hours south of Las Vegas, I never heard of this case until now. I enjoyed reading it from the detective's side...how he got involved, the many paths he had to take, all to bring this criminal to justice. With death threats against him and two others, he still followed through to the only outcome that was possible. Great job, Det. Nickell!

This book was a complete surprise to me. I bought it after the author reached out to me on Twitter. I thought to myself I would like to support new writers so I'll get it. I really enjoyed it. It was engaging right from the start. I enjoyed the progression of the book and the author's thoughts as he tracked the guy down. I would definitely read further books by Bradley Nickell.

Heart Pounding

My first true crime in a long time. I could not put it down. True account of Las Vegas' most notorious criminal ever, and the Detective who caught him. Break ins, robbery, and even murder for hire. Brilliantly told through the eyes of lead Detective Nickell. A MUST read for fans of good vs evil.

Nickell delivers with suspense, action, and engagement, in this true crime thriller. Yes, officers can be intelligent, witty, and well spoken. This author deserves to have his work read. I highly recommend this novel for a great read.

On another note, I can see Dennis Quaid as the lead in the movie version.

What a complete crap of a book. Horrible writing, very cops are the true heroes, and huge transphobia under the guise " I don't have problem with transgendered persons but here let's drop offensive comments". Honestly was looking for a crappy true crime afternoon read but not this crappy. Need to read blurb more. Still irritated.
