The hardest thing about fasting, for me at least, is not only the hunger and the weakness but, the challenge of actually staying focused during the fast and continually fixing my eyes on Christ, taking every thought captive and submitting it in obedience to obey Him. The hunger and weakness, already difficult in and of themselves, make it that much more difficult for me to physically stay focused. I often times find myself drifting and either thinking about nothing, dozing off, or wrestling with a headache. For me, this is where Dean Briggs’ Consumed served as an indispensable resource.

Each day’s devotional was powerful, engaging, challenging, and timely. The little daily advices and the way Consumed has been written made it feel as if you weren’t fasting alone but, fasting with Dean Briggs as a personal daily spiritual guide. Also, incredibly, not a single devotional ever felt repetitive, a problem I tend to find with other devotionals. Each devotional was also each short enough for reading a few times over the course of the day but, deep enough that it often took a few days to fully meditate and reflect upon. I often times found myself reading back to previous day’s devotionals in order to revisit things Dean Briggs’ had written and to meditate deeper on them. Consumed really helped tether my focus to Jesus and to the Scriptures while fasting and really helped daily encourage me to continue faithfully until the end. I’ll definitely be pulling it out again to fast with in the future. The next time, in fact, I’m hoping to invite a few friends to read and fast through it together. Briggs has written an incredible indispensable life-bringing resource for the spiritual life that has the potential to change a generation if utilized and taken seriously.

Superb & prophetic 40-day devotional guide

Searching for a 40 day fasting devotional, I would totally recommend getting Consumed. Was my first time doing a 40 day fast and this was a good devotion to keep me on track. And you get to immerse yourself in Psalm 40 and Isaiah 40. Such wonderful chapters of the Bible.
