River Bend #3

Can't Walk Away

Rate this book
A convenient, casual, and completely orgasmic fling. What more could a girl want?

For the past year, barista Ally Barrett has been content to spend her weekends distracting River Bend’s hottest commodity—the sexy, too-serious sheriff. Their casual arrangement suits her independent nature just fine…until it doesn’t.

Sheriff and Army Guardsman Mark Dunn lives to serve the people of his community and his country. Ally is the only woman who’s never asked for more than his nights—and the only one he’s ever considered giving his days, as well. Too bad duty says otherwise.

When an unexpected pregnancy flips their no-strings understanding on its head—and tarnishes both of their reputations—Mark has a tough time proving he wants a real relationship and not just reelection. But if this sheriff knows anything, it's how to fight for what he believes in—Ally’s heart.

Warning: This book contains a hero who’s all business and no play…unless there’s a dress and a hot redhead involved.

5 - "I wouldn't change a thing." Stars!

It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of Molly McLain, the River Bend series is one of those go-to sets that you know you will be picking up in years to come, because they give you all you want when you need a comforting, sexy, romantic read. It’s a series I want to revisit, with characters I want to keep hearing more about, and stories that I know that although they are yet to be told will be just as good as their predecessors.

”Sometimes the biggest risks reap the greatest rewards.”

Molly manages to give her couples the perfect balance of everything one might want to find when reading a book like this, Ally and Mark are no exception. There is a fine line when plotting out a story that involves the lack of commitment and communication tropes. It can get frustrating and downright annoying for a reader when taken too far, but again Molly played it just right, you just get to the point where the first fizzes of annoyance start to rear their head and the story evolves and develops into so much more than you originally expected it to.

Mark and Ally have featured in the previous books in the series. River Bend being a small town and the age demographic being what it is, as you would expect the group of twenty & thirty somethings generally end up spending time together. What started as no-strings gradually over time develops into too more for both of them. Problem being neither knows the other feels the same way, throw in an unexpected pregnancy, and the road travelled by this couple is certainly not without its pot-holes and traffic diversions.

”I could fuck you every hour of every day.”

I loved it! Mark was dirty, dominant, sweet, sexy, possessive, and adorably jealous, an out and out sweetheart. It took him a while to get his priorities straight but when he did, Ally Did. Not. Stand. A. Chance. But she made him work for it, I like a heroine that knows her own worth, and Ally didn’t just lie down and let Mark have it all his own way. Put together and with the addition of the rest of the River Bend characters it was a great combination that ensured an absolutely stellar story for any reader to get their teeth into.

Molly knows how highly I rate her work, and this series just gets better and better, (although she may want to give a girl a little more warning before she releases the next book!). There are very few authors that I would drop everything for in order to read one of their books; Molly is one of them. Some writers and readers just click, there may be times when things don’t always hit the mark 100% but the feeling is still there now matter what. I loved the first book in this series; I have loved each and every other addition to it in varying degrees since, and I am sure I will love whatever comes next in the world of River Bend and it’s residents.

There are so many characters still waiting to get their stories – Jenny, Reed, Luke and Sexy hot Fire Chief Nick to name but a few, which makes me happy as that means I have plenty of more visits to this town and it’s residents to come in the future.

ARC generously provided by the author, it was my absolute pleasure to provide the above honest review.

Ironically, Mark sure did "walk away" several times before finally settliing down.

The following line pretty much sums up this book for me:

He was so good at acting like he wanted all in, but when it came right down to it, he didn’t. And these mixed signals... they were seriously fucking with her head.

Aside from the fact that 95% of the book has Mark (the H) conflicted about his priorities >>> he can't put Ally and their unborn baby before his job as Sheriff! <<< This has slut shaming (not a fan of this crappolla!) an overload of push and pull between both MCs, OM drama, several weeks long separations and a very rushed ending.

Safety: Nope
Ages: Ally is 28, Mark is 32. (Neither were virgin)
Cheating: Not while together but ...
OM/OW drama: Yes, to OM drama x 2!
Separation: yes, the first was three weeks and the last was for a few days.
HEA or HFN: its ends with HEA aka a marriage proposal but I'm not sure I believe in the Ever after part :-/

This was a very solid read. The premise was something that isn't always used in romance -- at least not with the books I've been reading. And this one definitely stood out for me. It was well written and the characters were flawed yet relatable.

Ally gave me a little bit of whiplash but Mark wasn't exactly Mr. Forthcoming himself, so her fears and insecurities were understandable. I really liked the small town setting, the family dynamics and of course, the chemistry between Mark and Ally cannot be beat. It also didn't hurt that this book has a bit of angst.

I'll definitely be on a lookout for more books from this author. There are a couple of side characters in this book that I think are going to get their own book, so I'm looking forward to that. :)

Amazon US * Amazon UK

I wish the beginning had more actual angst instead of just misunderstandings and no communication between the main couple. But overall these characters gave me a fun story to read and I did enjoy it. I liked the chemistry between Ally and Mark when they were together and it had me rooting for them to figure out their mess and get together.

I received a complementary copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is book three in Molly McLain's River Bend series. After reading and enjoying the first two books and one novella, I was really looking forward to Mark and Ally's story and continuing to experience life in the small Nebraska town of River Bend. For me, it fell a little short of her previous work.

I found myself feeling sympathy for Mark, the county sheriff. Not so much for Ally, a barista. When they reached a bump in their relationship, Mark decides to take a breather and give her space. She blames Mark for pulling away when all the poor guy ever wants to do is talk about where they are as a couple. She constantly pushes him away. If you truly love someone and want to work on your relationship, you have to communicate. I particularly had a problem with her giving him an ultimatum...her or his job. She may have been trying to get him to be as passionate about her as he was about his job, but to me, it didn't come across that way. Loving a person and loving your job are totally different things. She knew what she was getting into when they bumped up their “friends” relationship to the next level. She knew how dedicated he was to his job and needed to stand by her man and support him rather than make him choose. More times than not the relationship will come in second.

At least half of the book was spent explaining their relationship, lack of relationship, whether they would get back together or not get back together, playing the blame game and so on. I felt it was more story telling by the author and less of pulling the reader into the story through dialogue and interaction by the characters. The previous books hit on emotions and a solid story line. For me, this one didn't quite make it.

Although Can't Walk Away can be read as a stand alone, I would suggest reading the prior books first to become acquainted with the characters and the community of River Bend. I would recommend it for a quick, light read and look forward to the next story.

Mark has issues, like the boy can't make up his mind he knows what he wants but he just screws up everything, "Mark grunted. "Is that what this is about? You're pi**ed that I haven't called?" The boy would seriously mess up a wet dream, yeah he stars in em' but he messes them up, "that's not what I meant..." S***. Why was he such an epic failure when it came to saying what he needed to say to her?" He's a horny boy I mean at times Ally has to bat him away:
"Can we have sex...like, as soon as we blow this pop stand or...?"
Ally laughed. "You're seriously thinking about getting laid right now? Sex is how we got into this mess!"
Mark he's an encourager (I don't think that's a word but it's what he does) when it comes to Ally and her exploring hands, "I like when you touch me," he whispered. "Feel free to move your hand a little further south." I liked the humor that Mark brought at certain times, "then I'll be quiet." He shoved her hand down to his junk and she shook harder. "You think my d*** is funny?" This is my favorite out of the series, but I'm thinking once we get Nick's book that'll change I love me a man in uniform.

Let me just start off by saying that I am HUGE fan of Molly's writing. I knew before I even opened the book that I was going to love it and I was not wrong. One of the things I really enjoy about this series is how real these characters feel. We got a little sneak peek of Mark and Ally's story in Can't Get Enough so I was very excited to see their love story play out!

Mark and Ally have been "unofficially" together for close to a year but Mark is too committed to his job to even think about committing to a relationship. Ally has been enjoying her time with Mark but with feelings starting to evolve she doesn't want to continue to play second fiddle to Marks career. When a series of life changing events happen can these two find a way to be together?

Mark and Ally have a chemistry that jumps off the pages. There are some extremely steamy scenes between these two along with some emotional and romantic ones as well. I loved every single page of this book and highly recommend all the River Bend books! I cannot wait to read more from Ms.McLain!

I received an ARC of this book by the author for an honest review.

Before I go into giving you my thoughts on this book, I'd like to mention that I am the type of reader that reads without prejudice. Just because you wouldn't catch me dead doing this that or the other that is in a book, that does not make that book bad. Hopefully all of you understand what that means. Second, I don't give away plots, I only speak of characters and structure of the story. That being said, let's move on to Can't Walk Away.

I am a HUGE fan of Molly McLain's style. The woman will tell you a story like it is. She doesn't sugarcoat her characters. They are real and are portrayed that way. SO yes, they curse, think nasty things, do nasty things, make stupid choices and above all, are not infallible. Something else Ms McLain is VERY good at is writing RAW FUCKING SEX SCENES (that phrase will have to change when I review on Amazon lol). When I read the first book in this series back in the summer (well, I've read them all twice now), I immediately fell in love with how easy it was to relate to her characters and how true to form her plots/events were. Her books are real. They happen every day. To every day people. And that's who I am. An every day girl. SO, as much as I love to read out of my reach fiction (you know the one, billionaire falls in love with housekeeper and they live HEA.....lol), it's VERY GOOD when an author comes along and writes stories that not only could very much happen to me or already have, but the characters are people that I would actually know. People I would be friends with. So Molly McLain gets HUGE props for accomplishing that, not only with Cant Walk Away, but also with the last two stories and two novellas she has written about our friends in River Bend!

The story of Mark and Ally is basically this. For over a year now, they have both been each other's go to person when the itch for sex comes along. In reality, they may have started out that way, but somewhere down the line, both of them fell for the other in a more than 'can you scratch this itch for me' kinda way. But the problem is, neither told the other that. But wait, it gets better, not only did neither of them tell each other they had developed seriously deep feelings for the other, but they both decided (in their own special way) that ignoring the other for a period of time would make the other realize how good they had it and fall to their knees. And to be clear ..... no one is communicating! LOL At some point in this whole mess of a situation, Ally finds herself pregnant and Mark has to do a lot of ass kissing (lol) to not only gain Ally's trust, but her heart as well. Can Mark and Ally learn to communicate with each other and learn to listen to each other and not just hear each other? Will they be able to put their stubborn ridiculousness (lol) aside so they can find the love they both deserve from and in each other? READ THE BOOK AND LET ME KNOW :)

If someone was to ask me to put a title to me review it would read: Knowledge is power and communication is key! Mark and Ally have the WORST communication skills to the point that it borders on lunacy. These two were not teens or even young adults, but yet they acted like they were teens! I honestly have zero tolerance for lunatic people. And to me, they were both off the chart lunatics! But they are not unique in their lunacy. That crap happens ALL THE TIME. We've all experienced it at some point in our lives. I have no clue how Ally can be intimately acquainted with Mark for over a year and not only not know his basic moral code, but somehow paint him as something he is completely NOT. And Mark .... LMAO, but in what world does 'backing off' a woman and ignoring her EVER come to any good. I know this sounds like I didnt like the book, but it's the opposite. I actually read it twice. Yes, I was annoyed as all get out at them BOTH and their meddling family and friends as well, but I read without prejudice :) SO as much as neither Mark nor Ally would ever be allowed in my circle of life, their story was GOOD! Ms McLain wrote a very engaging story that really kept you on your toes. Even I couldnt wait to read what happens next....every damn time either Mark or Ally tried to close the gap they had created, something would just go ridiculously wrong. I laughed A LOT at their expense. I must have said 'WHO DOES THAT?!' in my head over a dozen times thru the course of this book! lol The only reason the book was not a 5 star book for me, was because I did think it took way too long for both Mark and Ally to get their heads out of their asses (even tho miscommunications still occurred after) which made it a little tedious at times to read and not skim.

So there you have it, I've told you about Ms McLain's BADASS writing skills and the story that drove me BANANAS while reading it! :) Now YOU go pick this book up and let me know what YOU think!

I am very much looking forward to MORE River Bend novels and/or anything else Molly McLain has to offer for us.

A fun read!

This story had me torn. These poor folks really did need to communicate more; their feelings, their intentions; their desires. They finally got their act together and it transformed Mark and Ally’s story into something amazing. A great book!

In this sexy contemporary romance, part of the River Bend series but easily read as a standalone, Ally and Mark have been in an on again/off again relationship for a year, a no strings attached affair that seemed great at the beginning but is now beginning to wear on both of them. They have strong feelings for each other - they've just never gotten the hang of communicating these feelings, instead letting the sexual attraction they feel for each other dictate the relationship. But now things have gotten real. Ally is pregnant and she wants Mark to get out or be all in. Faced with the reality of possibly losing Ally forever, will Mark step up to the plate?

I loved this story! While I was reading it I couldn't help but find it refreshing to have a couple that in many ways is a composite of many relationships out there - happy with the status quo until it no longer serves and they realize that to have a future together they need to be able to communicate. Sex is great - but it doesn't make for a lasting long term relationship as both Ally and Mark are realizing. I loved both characters in this story. Ally is friendly, outgoing and loves Mark yet realizes she needs more of a commitment from him. Mark is a loyal and decent guy but gun shy of revealing the extent of his feelings for Ally because in truth he doesn't think he's good enough for her and he's afraid that if he takes the next step forward she'll back off. He screws up, repeatedly, but Ally is a forgiving soul and is willing to give him chance after chance. But with a surprise pregnancy it's no longer just about them, and Mark finally (finally!) realizes that he needs to do better or he'll lose them both. The love scenes between them are steamy and emotional, but it's the love they share and finally both admit to that makes the story. The secondary characters play a big part in the story too, both Mark and Ally's family and friend's putting in their two cents worth and adding humour and tension to the story. Some new characters were also introduced that will hopefully get their own happy ever afters. 5 stars for an entertaining and delightful read!

How many times have we discovered that what we truly want is right in front of us but we think we don't deserve it or we are too afraid to ask for it? The most simple of those things is love and commonly it's the one thing that gets mucked up so badly, it is lucky to survive!

Mark and Ally are that couple that are compatible & highly-combustible between the sheets but have no idea how they would fare in a real relationship outside of that.

Mark is that homegrown guy with the self-given responsibility to take care of the entire community. He can't quite figure out that balancing act of how to leave his sheriff's hat hanging at the station and just be "off the clock" Mark.

Ally is the girl with the personality that draws folks of all ages to her. People come to the coffee shop probably to get a daily dose of Ally as much as their dose of java & sweets.

So much in life & love is about realizing that we deserve the ultimate happiness and to be able to say that out loud.

Ms. McLain has written another great book to add to my 5 star bookshelf. I have read the previously books of this series each twice and find myself enveloped into the lives of each character as if I could live in town with them.

I received this book as an ARC and would highly recommend it. I look forward to reading the next book from this series or any that Ms. McLain writes as her writing is like a great home cooked meal; it has just the right amount of spice, you just can't put it down, and it warms your soul!

FOUR 'ALL IN' STARS!!

I discovered this author two days ago, and I have positively devoured this sexy small town series! I've been anxious for the story between Mark, the sexy sheriff and his pretty girl, Ally, from the beginning and I was chomping at the bit for it. Molly McLain did not disappoint with their story, and she delivered a perfect small town romance with this one.

Mark and Ally have been friends for years, crossing the threshold to lovers for the past year. Ally has fallen hard for the sheriff, but she's not sure if he feels the same. Mark wants more than just the sexy hookups Ally is giving him, but his vague attempts at conveying that to her haven't gone over so well. So Mark formulates a plan he hopes will have Ally rushing into his arms, only it backfires on him-badly. Add to that the typical small town gossip and drama, competition in the form of the town's new fire chief, a life altering surprise and one heck of a pissed off Poppa, and this story has all the makings of a really great small town romance.

I love this series, I love these characters and this little town. I cannot wait for the next installment in this well written, sweet and sexy series. The talented Molly McLain may be a new author, but she's fast become a guaranteed one click for me!

CAN'T WALK AWAY:#3 in River Bend Mark Dunn Hot Sexy Sheriff and Ally Barrett..the Coffee barista in River Bend..
Release February 9th:

Mark Dunn and Ally's Barrett's relationship was rocky...They're scared and both have issues with putting themselves out there...After being apart for awhile they're both not sure where the relationship stands. Ally knows what she wants. Mark will do anything and everything to prove he cares. The one thing is Ally wants something more from him, and she's not so sure he's is willing to give her..Will he or won't he put her first..Ally wants everything and is being selfish..

There is nothing more important then her. He keeps telling her over and over he wants no one else in his life, and his life is not complete without her in. He tries so hard to show and prove himself to her. I loved that about Mark, but Ally continues to not believe it.

Truly Mark and Ally were made for each other..part of me wished Mark had not disappointed me so much..In one part of the book.

This is the best River Bend story yet! I loved it.

Molly McLain’s books just keep getting better and better. The blub is accurate so I won’t rehash the story. Just let me say that this book made me laugh and cry and really feel for Ally and Mark. They really manage to mess things up between themselves by not communicating and who hasn’t had this problem before in real life?

The book is part of a series but each book also stands alone with no cliffhanger. If you love HOT, sexy times and a hero that makes you melt, you will love this book. One note of warning – there is liberal use of strong language including the F word. If this bothers you, you might want to pass this up. If you do pass it up, though, know that you will be missing a wonderful love story.

Edit: I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I received this book as an ARC from Molly Mclain for my honest review. I want to start by saying first thank you Molly and second if you have not read this book you need to pick it up ASAP!

This book is hot in and out of the bedroom, mix in with passion, romance, jealousy, horrible communication and a bun in the oven and you have a perfect romance novel.

Sheriff and Army Guardsman Mark Dunn is all about serving and protecting his county. Unfortunately for Ally he is so focused on serving his county that he has forgotten to give her the quality time she needs. One passionate night after months of denying their need for each other leaves Ally pregnant and Mark trying to figure out a way to let Ally know just how he feels

GREAT BOOK FOR A GREAT PRICE FROM A GREAT AUTHOR! YOU WILL NOT REGRET THIS PURCHASE.

This is a book about miscommunication and terrible communications. Ally and Mark have had an under wraps the relationship for almost a year, and neither knows the right way to try to make it more. In comes another potential guy, a pregnancy and a overbering father and frustration ensues. I was frustrated for a lot of this book and wanted things to go faster. There were a lot of cute parts but I wanted to rip my hair out over how bad at talking to each other they were and for how long. It wasn't even communication between Mark and Ally that was bad but between all the characters in the book, which was a struggle.

This is the first book I have read in the series and I enjoyed it. Actually I couldn't put it down. Although you can tell this couple has been in previous books together you can see how much they care and love one another even if it's not said. The back and forth between them got a little annoying but when mark finally figured his shit out it was the best part of the book. I can honestly say I would love to read the other books in this series and hope their is more to come after this one. It comes with hot sheriff and hotter sex!

This book is a classic story of communication breakdowns in relationships. Mark and Ally have major feelings for each other, want more out of their relationship but take every wrong step possible instead of being honest with each other about their feelings, What follows is huge misunderstandings, gossip and rumors. How they over come their own insecurities and overlook all the misunderstandings to find true love is what this book is all about. Going to be reading the previous titles in this series.

Best book so far.
I was in love with Ally and Mark from the start. I was so glad that they got their own book.
This book is so romantic.....well once Mark got his head out of his ass!
All of the books in this series end with a HEA and could be read as a standalone. I am waiting patiently for the next book!!

I received a copy of this story through NetGalley from the publisher/author for an honest review. Although this book could be read as a standalone, I think you definitely benefit from reading at least the 2nd book in this series. Ally is featured heavily in the story as Nicole's friend and this book picks up during the bar scene towards the end of the book when Mark storms out. The book is told in alternating points of view between Mark and Ally. We don't get a lot of the previous characters, but Nick (the new fire chief is introduced and we get a little more of Jenny and her angst with Reed - first book).

I've really enjoyed this series, but this one wasn't my favorite so far. It won't keep me from reading any future books in the series and in fact I'm looking forward to the next one! I think what didn't keep me connected is a personal frustration with too much miscommunication and stubbornness in a book. Obviously it's inevitable in a book, but this one had a few too many scenes for my tastes.

I think the book is aptly named "Can't Walk Away." These two characters obviously love each other and definitely are exclusive, but are both too stubborn to go all in. I liked both characters and their personalities a lot. When they were together I got the warm fuzzies for them. What I didn't understand were the numerous times they would spend apart. They would declare their strong feelings for each other and usually it was Ally who would express she needed him to make her a priority similar to his job. Then suddenly Mark would disappear for a few weeks. ??? I never felt like it was Ally would should have stepped forward because I didn't understand why Mark would pull back to that degree. If this happened once or twice, I could understand, but this happened numerous times.

Although it worked out in the end, but Ally's dad was a d@*k. I understand his protectiveness for his little girl, but he went too far and for too long making him petty. I would have liked to see Ally confront him for his hurtful words and actions.

Overall, this book was a little different from the previous two stories. There was a lot of miscommunication and stubbornness, which aren't really my personal tastes to the degree this book went. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to future books for this world and seeing how Ally and Mark's relationship progresses!

Communication is everything

So, not gonna lie, this one made me frustrated several times! While I appreciated my time with these characters, this couple had the worst communication!

Ally and Mark absolutely know that they are ready for the L-word, and everything that comes with that, but lack of communication and inflexibility on his part has their relationship crumbling. Just annoying.

An unexpected surprise has things focusing for Mark, and puts these two on a path to forever. I didn’t enjoy this story as much as the others in this series, but am glad to have read it (if that makes sense). 😀

This was easy to read and I am glad I read this series. Read in order for the best reading experience.

Cute and angsty fling to forever/accidental pregnancy romance. I wish they had explored more of why they both suddenly realized the other was serious, especially on her side, because she went from not believing his motives to believing them pretty quickly. I also wish we got more of a focus on her pregnancy, since it's such a big part of the plot, but a lot of it was glossed over.

Overall though, this was a nice quick read that hit the spot at a time that I've been in a reading slump. I'm interested in reading about a few of the other couples and potential couples that were present in the side characters too.

Can’t Walk Away- Mark and Ally

So…full disclosure, my pet peeve is lack of communication. That being said..

Mark and Ally have spent the last year hanging out..in all the ways. But neither Mark nor Ally know how the other truly feels about them. Mark wants a relationship but hasn’t said anything and questions Ally’s intent. Ally loves Mark but hasn’t told him, and questions Mark’s intent? Pretty simple solution huh? Not so much! This is 3/4 of the book. Frustrating is an understatement.

Then when they finally get their crap together..swoon! The last quarter is great! Growth and understanding by both characters.

You have the right to remain lovestruck!

Wow! What can I say about this one... it made me mad, made me happy and made me cry. I think this is my favorite in this series so far. Granted. There have only been 3, but it was awesome! I loved the dynamic between Ally and Mark too. And, I am not ashamed to admit, I have a thing for law enforcement (and firemen) so I was eager to read this one. Molly definitely hit a grand slam with this one. Highly recommend this one to anyone even if you haven't read the other River Bend stories.

Pleasantly surprised

I started out pretty angry about the direction this book was going, but once again this writer didn't go with the traditional plot line of constant misunderstandings leading to an abrupt HEA. This book has a nice progression and our hero doesn't take too awful long to wise up. Every time I thought the author was about to piss me off with a typical "betrayal/not" twist, she didn't. Wow. This isn't the first time this author has impresses me with her positive take on storytelling! Nice job!

2.5 stars It was ok but Mark was so stupidly obtuse for so long it was kind of annoying so I don't blame Ally at all for doubting he was serious. I mean not just the completely asinine decision to ghost her for a month as some kind of test of her feelings but his continued repeat of that and inability to commit and tell her he loves her until she nearly dies & he finds out she is pregnant, even after he has said he wants to be together and she has admitted her love. Then he is all in and super lovey Dovey everything for my girl she is the best but by then I wasn't that invested.
