I was given this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review
Let me start off by saying I have never read a Christian book before, besides the bible in Sunday school YEARS ago, till I read Bloom by Cathy Jackson.
It was such a beautiful story. Of course at first, you learn the relationship of Phoenix and her first husband Charles. I felt physically ill reading the first 20% of this book because of what this poor woman went through. This man was ruthless and nothing seemed off limits. Personally, I've never been in a relationship like this one so I couldn't really judge her for staying. No one can truly know how someone in her position really feels unless they've lived it. I know someone who has and sorry I told her NOT to read this due to triggers.
Thankfully this story takes another turn and Phoenix is saved from her husband. Before that, she meets a landscaper named John Westerling who helps her and shows her another kind of life that is possible with the right man. After the turn in events, him and his daughter Anna save Phoenix from herself and show her that not everyone in life hurts you. There are good people in this world. There is love in this world. We also get a wonderful happily ever after.
Cathy's writing is amazing. She kept someone like me who mostly reads erotica, intrigued with this story and wanting to keep going to get to that HEA.
You are a beautiful talent my new friend. I thank you for honoring me with reading your book :) ((HUGS))
I received a copy of this book to give an honest review, and I am so happy I was able to read it early. I could not put this book down, until I finished it. I did walk away for a few moments so I could steady my emotions though. What a great book.. this book touched a part of my soul. I went through a range of emotions during the journey. I will say to grab the tissues before you start reading this book. Angry tears at the beginning of the book over the treatment of the female lead character. More tears, this time sad ones over the indecision and turmoil Phoenix struggled with throughout the book. Lots of happy tears as Phoenix is finally able to let herself bloom. I love love love this book, and can see myself reading it again. Congratulations on a fantastic book Cathy Jackson. I will be watching for more books from you in the future!
I thought this was a really great book. A book of moments and circumstance. One moment brought phoenix and John together. This book is also about second chances and finding a love that exceeds the physical and mental scars of an abusive relationship. To me, this book was inspiring; although if I had known before reading the book that it fit into the Christian fiction genre, I honestly probably wouldn't have read it; and I would have missed out on an amazing book. I love books that give you hope, and this book definitely does just that! As I read the book, I could picture myself in a relationship like John and Phoenix's and it was wonderful. Bloom is just an awesome book overall and I recommend it to anyone wanting to read a sweet story of two people finding their other halves.
Cathy Jackson is a wonderful talented writer. I was asked to read this and give an honest opinion on my thoughts. This type of book is not generally one that I would pick up off a shelf, however when asked to read I couldn't say no as the description pulled me right into it. I fell in love with Phoenix and John and little Anna from the moment they were introduced. Their story ran parallel with my own life, from my first marriage to my second marriage. This book will pull you in from start to finish, and how someone struggles finding and coping with life and love. I kept telling myself through out my life that you have to go through bad things in order to appreciate the good things that God does give to you. It has made me cherish everything, God, my husband, family and every moment I have in my life. I have come to realize that everything that comes your way, comes with a reason, you may not know that reason but sometime down the road you will shown what that reason is. Sit back and enjoy the book. You will need to have a box of tissues nearby as all sorts of emotions will emerge when reading this. God works in mysterious ways and I believe he did this with Cathy Jackson and her book BLOOM. Thank you Cathy for writing this beautiful emotionally filled book. I will definitely put you up their with my favourite authors. You are really a talented writer.
I really liked this book a lot. The character Phoenix was such a kind and caring women who really pulled on my heart strings with her horrible husband. She met John by Happenstance when planting a rose bush in her yard. I was really happy when her husband left the picture and her and John with little Anna could be friends. I highly recommend this book to my friends.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
Bloom by Cathy Jackson, is a wonderful read and to be honest, quite a refreshing change from a few of the e books I've read this year that used sex scenes as fillers and just did not do it for me. Side note- If it was like that I did not review the book, as I would rather not leave a bad review, my mother taught me if I did not have anything nice to say-to say nothing! Thankfully Bloom by Cathy Jackson is an awesome read and I just know a lot of people are going to enjoy this as much as I have! This is my first book I have red by Cathy and it will not be my last!
With love in her heart, Phoenix gets married and on the way home from the wedding her husband has sex with her, and once they arrive at his home-the happiness is over, she is told to carry the bags in and when the driver helps her, her husband refuses to pay the driver, and Phoenix gets a taste of what her new life will be like- with the strap as a constant threat and reminder. In a one word description Phoenix's husband was a monster. What helped a bit was that her husband was gone all the time, and so she could calm down somewhat until he came back home again. Phoenix lives this way for 5 years, because of the fact that was her vow, not because of love or devotion.
One day, Phoenix decides she wants a rosebush, and so she attempts to try to plant one, and this is when fate steps in and brings John, a single father and a landscaper, is driving by and sees Phoenix attempting to plant her rosebush in the worst way possible, and for some reason he stops and gets out. This small act of kindness serves as the beginning of other things for both of them.
John is a single father, his wife decided when their daughter was born, she did not want to be a mom and so gladly left her daughter with her husband, divorce soon followed, and she completely did not even thing about their daughter anymore, so John became mother and father for his baby girl. The day John and Phoenix meet changes both of their lives, and only time will tell just how much. And when Phoenix sees John's little girl, and she starts to have feelings for her right away, it is something to read about.
This story brings out so many feelings between the characters and it is amazing to see Phoenix rise up out of the depths of her despair, and it is also sad to see John sink to a bad place when his daughter goes away for a week with his ex wife after she decided she wants to be a mom after all after ignoring the child for 5 years.
Will Phoenix be able to escape the horror she lives in day to day from the beginning of the book, at the hands of her husband? What happens to Charles, Phoenix's husband? Will John and Phoenix be able to move away from all the sadness, grief and horrors they have both suffered at the hands of others? What about little Anna, John's little daughter-will she like Phoenix? What happens to Anna at the hands of John's ex-wife? Will Phoenix and John be able to help each other overcome all the obstacles that life has dealt their way?
You will have to read this book, and I know you will be so glad you did, this book is so well written that while you are reading it, you find yourself laughing when the characters are happy, and crying when they are hurt, you can feel what you are reading, because Cathy is brilliant at describing every little detail. I know I am coming away from reading this novel, a better person for having read it. Thank you so much, Cathy Jackson, for this amazing book!
I gave this book 5 stars and look for ward th Cathy's next books!
I hate that we can't rate our favorite books more than five stars! If i could i would rate this book with gazillion stars and yet it wouldn't be enough! Cathy Jackson, what did you do to me?!!
I cried, and cried, and cried, then i laugh with tears in my eyes from happiness. I never felt so helpless in my live then when i was reading this book! I wish, really really wish that i could transport myself in this book and beat that as*hole with everything i have for doing that to his lovely wife! I wish i could hug her and tend her wounds, but not just psychical but deeper ones too, the one that stays with us no matter what, forever. Before i continue i have a need to share one poem with all of you that will be reading this review. It's from unknown author and it can be related with this book and with every third women in this world, unfortunately.
"I GOT FLOWERS TODAY"
Got Flowers Today
I got flowers today. It wasn't my birthday or any other special day. We had our first argument last night. He said a lot of cruel things that really hurt me. I know he was sorry and didn't mean the things he said. Because I got flowers today.
I got flowers today. It wasn't our anniversary or any other special day. Last night, he threw me into a wall and started to choke me. It seemed like a nightmare. I couldn't believe it was real. I woke up this morning sore and bruised all over. I know he must be sorry Because he sent me flowers today.
I got flowers today. It wasn't Mother's Day or any other special day. Last night, he beat me up again. And it was much worse than all other times. If I leave him, what will I do? How will I take care of my kids? What about money? I' m afraid of him and scared to leave. But I know he must be sorry Because he sent me flowers today.
I got flowers today. Today was a very special day. It was the day of my funeral. Last night he finally killed me. He beat me to death.
If only I had gathered enough courage and strength to leave him, I would not have gotten flowers today.
***This poem is dedicated to all the victims and survivors of Domestic Violence.***
You ask, why didn't she leave?
I ask, why did he hit?
This is one hard, very hard read. But i really hope that this book will read so many people and that at least one person will be saved from hell.
I won't retail you absolutely ANYTHING! You HAVE TO read this book in order to find out details. I will just tell you that this woman was saved, but how many others aren't? Don't close your eyes when you see a bruise on someone. Help, cause tomorrow that can be you, me, she, everyone.
Thank you Cathy for sharing this story with us. And thank you for our little Anna. I will never forget her, and other characters in this book!
I was given this book for an honest review and can honestly say it's amazing. I'm so glad the author gave me the chance to read this book early. the book starts with Phee in an abusive marriage and the author does tell what she goes through which as hard as it was to read I appreciated because you felt her emotions. During one of her husbands many trips she meets John and then her Anna. And with their friendship and other events you see her start to find herself again. This book made me cry and laugh at moments and just cheer for her throughout the story. A job well done and I highly recommend this book to everyone just be prepared to not want to put it down once you start reading it.~Sydney
This wonderfully written story brings to light domestic violence, but it also shows how there is life and love afterwards. Phoenix thought she had found love, but once Charles got the "I do" things spiraled downward. Charles did not look at Phoenix as his wife, she was a possession, his slave, his whipping post. His meal had to be on the table cooked perfectly, house perfectly cleaned. When he was out of town he had mistresses, but when he was home and drunk he would attack. Beaten down and broken, Phoenix put up with it. Her one defiant act, planting a rose bush in the yard. While out doing it, a truck pulls up, out steps a man..John. John is a landscaper, so seeing her trying to plant the bush, he helps her, for free, and gives her his card in hopes of more business. Charles goes nuts when he gets home and beats Phoenix, but then says he wants another planted exactly the same way to balance the yard, and she has to do it by the afternoon. So she calls John in hopes he can help. When John finds out what is going on, not only does he come and plant the bush, but tells her if she needs him call. Charles, now demands more done, sidewalks, more roses and trellises are to be put in perfectly and she has until he gets back from his trip. There is only 1 person for Phoenix to call...John. After seeing the results of what happens when Charles doesn't like something, John knows it has to be perfect. Phoenix and John develop a relationship, a friendship but its more. Neither will act on it, John being a good Christian and Phoenix is too afraid. But when Charles dies in a drunk driving accident, Phoenix is free, or is she?? Is the love growing between John and her enough to chase the demons away?? ~Sharon
I was given an ARC book for an honest review free of persuasion from the author or anyone else affiliated with this book.
CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS
This story is told from the female lead's point of view. I have to say that I love books with various point of views and would like to have seen it from the male lead's point of view as well. I can see why Ms. Jackson only chose the female lead POV further on in the book. I would love to have seen part of this book from the male lead's POV later in the book. Maybe a novella or some excerpts will come out with his POV.
I loved this book! This book starts off with a young woman who is being abused by her husband, however she stays in the marriage because she feels she is obligated to do so when she made the vows.
Phoenix..oh Phoenix..She is a spitfire near the end. I would have never guess by the end of this book that she was the wife of an abusive husband in the beginning of this book.
Enter night in shining armor..ok not really, a handy gardener, who is lead to help her plant roses. She then needs his help again to finish the rest of the yard for her "perfect" husband before he gets home on a business trip. This leads to a nice friendship and nothing more..even though both want a little more. Do they get a little more?
One night Charles, the husband, does not show up. For days he does not show up. To find out what happened to him you have to read the book! I was so shocked! I was hoping for one thing when Ms. Jackson took it in a totally different direction. John is a great character in the book and makes a good role model for dad's out there who are struggling on their own.
This is a Christian Romance so it does not have any sex scenes, however it does push some boundaries in the steamy department. I want to thank Ms. Jackson for the privilege of letting me beta, however that did not lead me to this 5 star review. The writing, the vast improvement from her first book and the way she presented the story was the reason for the 5 star review! Congrats Cathy
CONTAINS SPOILERS Phoenix had a tough life growing up and though when she found Charles he dreams had come true, good looking, sweet and he wanted her. But as soon as they were wed Charles revealed that he was a monster. Phoenix stayed only because that was part of her vow, not because or love or devotion. Charles was gone often which helped but he was abusive and left bruises on her for most of his absence. John was a single father and had been from almost the beginning of Anna's life, when his ex decided she didn't want to be anyone's mother. This caused John to have the love of both a mother and a father and want to protect her from any hurt. The day John met Phoenix, was a day that changed both of their lives. John found a broken scared women and Phoenix found a man that made where she didn’t have to feel scared all the time, a man that gave her strength and brought her out of her shell.
Will Phoenix, get away from her abusive husband? Or Does John rescue her from him? Do they save each other from the hand that life has dealt them? Or does Phoenix shut John out of her life to keep him safe from Charles’ destructive ways?
This book brings out several emotions, love, hatred and hurt. Cathy does a wonderful job of making you feel these emotions with the characters as they are living through each one. Cathy also does a good job of adding touches of the bible here and there, using verse to give strength to the situation.
>I received this book from the author and from Paranormal Romance and Authors that Rock.
>Phoenix is a battered wife. Doing yard work, she hires a landscaper, John, to help her. After the death of her husband, Phoenix turns to John and his daughter, Anna, for support. This story shows the journey Phoenix makes in her opinion of marriage, love, loving relationships and her faith. John is a Godly man and wants to treat Phoenix with respect and love.
>Anna teaches Phoenix the unconditional love of a child and John shows her the respect and patience, especially with the physical side of adult love, of a faith in God. Sometimes the pull of a physical relationship is so much sexier than an erotic scene. This story would have been perfect if there was an erotic scene AFTER the wedding.
>The theme of physical and mental abuse is tough to read. When Anna is exposed to mental abuse, the alpha in Phoenix is beautiful to see as she protects what she now loves.
> This book is for a young adult/adult audience. This story is a religious romance, but the religion is not overpowering and adds to the story.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. For Phoenix Swartz life was all about walking on eggshells. Her husband Charles was abusive both physically and verbally. She aimed to please him but it seemed she never did anything right. One day while planting a rose bush, Phoenix receives help from a handsome stranger named John. John was a landscaper. Most of all he was the opposite of Charles. He was kind and seemed to genuinely care about her. After John agrees to help her with a yard project the two start spending time together. He makes her feel like there is more to life then what she is used to. Can Phoenix stand up to Charles and live the life she deserves or will she go about life as she now knows it?
This story was a great read! It grabbed me right from the beginning. I could relate to some of what Phoenix went through. The author did an incredible job of portraying the characters emotions. I laughed, cried, and smiled. I recommend this book to anyone who likes stories about finding your inner strength and most of all having faith. I give this 4 stars
I received this book in exchange for an honest review from Addicted to books and authors. This was beautifully written. I am not religious at all but it was written in such a way that I was even touched. I loved the aspect of finding true love when all is lost. We immediately meet Phoenix who is married to Charles an abusive husband, and she must obey his every word or else. Phoenix one her own decides to plant a Rose bush in the yard, not caring what Charles thinks and she is offered help from a stranger John. Phoenix begins to feel things for John that she doesn't understand and when she meets his daughter she is instantly in love. Then "tragedy" strikes and Phoenix is feeling confused and yet strangely upset by the loss in her life. They are so different yet so attracted to one another, can love overcome it all? Can Phoenix break free and be happy? An amazing read and highly recommended.
I was given a copy in exchange for an honest review
This is such a beautiful story. John and Phoenix have both been devastated by love. Can they overcome their pasts and let love in again? My heart just went out to Phoenix. She was in a hopeless situation when John came into her life to help her. John is a single father and has a daughter anyone would just fall in love with. John is so patient and loving to Phoenix it was a beautiful thing to watch. While John strives to be a godly man Phoenix is afraid she is far from being saved. Phoenix is so strong and passionate despite all she has been through or maybe because of it. Sometimes you have to go through the bad to recognize the good. This story truly touched me and I know it's going to be one that I will go back and reread over and over.
This is an extremely emotional story. My heart breaks for Phoenix Swartz and the abusive life she endured under her husband Charles. The love John Westerling showed his daughter Anne his faith and love of God. This story covers so many levels of emotions, from the pain, mental and physical abuse, to seeing the other end of the spectrum with love, gentleness, respect, a relationship with God, prayer, faith and honest commitment. This story shares the love of God and a true faith without being a preachy story. Can a woman who has lived such an abusive life find love with a faithful Christian man? Where is God during all the pain and suffering and can she learn to believe and trust. This story is well worth reading and I am happy I read this emotional story, yes you can have the HEA ending.
Get ready for the best emotional experience of your life! Bloom explores the dark side of human emotion. Relationships that form bonds that are not easily broken, no matter how toxic, twisted and perverse they are. Then, when you are at the depths of despair, the light breaks through the darkness. Love is a beautiful thing, but also wrought with pain. Like the title suggests, this story does indeed bloom. I found myself cheering, crying and yes, LAUGHING OUT LOUD! Don’t pick this book up without a box of tissues at hand. Phoenix and John will become as beloved to readers as Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy. Don’t pass this one up. It is destined for great things.

Cathy Jackson brought to the light how domestic violence affects marriages especially the victim. Her characters were very well developed and her storyline flowed very well. I definitely recommend her books if you havent read them.
This is a really good book I love it. I love the characters and plot mixed together in the book. The dialogue between the characters is really good. I enjoyed reading this book a lot.
I loved this book. It hit home in many ways since I had at one time been a victim of spousal abuse. It was a warm loving story, and I can't wait for the next in the series.

The Review:
This book is a clean, inspirational romance with Christian themes. It is a sweet story of a second chance at love after suffering extreme horrors. This book showcases one woman's journey to a better life with the help of a new friend who lives the life that he preaches.
Phoenix Swartz has suffered abuse at the hands of her husband Charles for years. She has lost her faith in humanity and her ability to love. One day, as she is trying to plant some roses, a man stops and offers her assistance. His name is John Westerling, and he claims that he felt a need to stop and help. From just this short meeting, Phoenix knows that there is something different about him. Needing help on another landscaping project, Phoenix contacts him again. It is through these small meetings that the two develop a friendship. John knows that Phoenix needs help, and someone who is willing to show that they care for her. She is all alone and hurting, and he cannot stand how much she suffers.
After a tragic accident that takes the life of her husband Charles, Phoenix begins to see more of John. She meets his daughter Anna and is drawn to the love, laughter and innocence that radiates from her. John is a man unlike any that she has ever met. He always uplifts and encourages Phoenix, trying to help her regain control of her life and to realize that not everybody is the same as Charles. Least of all him.
John Westerling is a man who is ruled by his heart. A heart that is so full of love for his daughter Anna, that he hasn't really made time for another woman in years. What he sees in Phoenix calls to him though. He sees something that she doesn't see in herself. He's glimpsed her heart, and knows that she is capable of love.
Phoenix claims she doesn't know if she will ever be able to love another man or to ever marry again. She never counted on meeting a man like John though. Anna slowly makes her way into Phoenix's heart, until she cannot imagine a life without her. Along the way, John also finds a spot, and Phoenix begins to slowly mend the pieces of her broken heart to let love in again. Intrigued by this man and his faith, Phoenix takes a journey that will show her that there are greater things in life than she ever imagined. Her world is opened up to a God who takes care of His people, and one she slowly starts to believe in again.
This is a realistic love story that happens over time. While Phoenix cares for John and Anna, she doesn't dive right in to another relationship. Even though John is sure that she is the woman that he wants and needs, Phoenix takes the time to truly get to know John and his daughter. To understand what it is about them that makes them different. Why they believe in God and His mercy. She begins to understand her own heart, and slowly builds herself back up after Charles tore every part of her down. She comes to see that she is worthy of love, and is capable of so much more love than she ever imagined.
What I really loved about this story was the relationship between John and Anna. He was such a devoted father. One who took care of every one of his daughter's needs. He made sure that she knew she was loved and wanted. That she could trust her father with anything and everything. She never had to question his love for her. I also loved the relationship that developed between Phee (Phoenix) and Anna. There is nothing like the unconditional love of a child to open up even the most closed off hearts. Anna was a breath of fresh air, and she rejuvenated Phoenix like no one else could. She became a mother to someone else's child without distinction.
I also loved that the relationship between Phoenix and John developed slowly. You could tell that they were attracted to one another, and there were some times when they really wanted to act on those passions, but they resisted. They did things right by John's beliefs...that they wait until they get married before becoming physically intimate. Though they didn't partake of the physical act of love, they became intimate in every other way that matters. They bonded emotionally and spiritually in a way that was beautiful to "watch" unfold.
I thought that the author did a great job of writing a clean, uplifting, inspirational romance with Christian themes. For the most part, the story fell in line with those themes, though there were some times that they strayed from what is Biblically considered right. Such as marrying a non-believer, which was mentioned later in the book. I did appreciate that Cathy told the story as it should be told. Over time and not rushed. I can appreciate the fact that she painted Christianity and it's believers in a favorable light rather than what is often portrayed in the media. John and his fellow church members weren't seen as zealots or people who pushed their religious beliefs on others, rather it was the way that they lived which told the story of what they believed and why.
There were a few things I didn't really care for. One was the fact that the tenses sometimes changed in the story, and there were some editing issues here and there. I thought that some places of the story line were dragged out a bit in places, while others seemed to move a little fast. I also didn't get why the author felt the need to use the name John Westerling so much when Phoenix was talking about him. It was a little strange that she had to use his full name so much.
Overall, I recommend this story. The author did a great job of portraying the acts of physical and mental abuse and how they play on a person's psyche. I commend her for getting into the nitty-gritty details to portray abuse, and also showing how much strength and courage it takes people to overcome their fears and pasts.
I really didn't know what to expect when I started reading Bloom. Sometimes I prefer going into a book completely blind without reading the blurb or reviews so I have no predetermined notions about the story. The beginning of the story took me by complete surprise. What appeared to start as a happy beginning, turned very dark and violent quickly.
Phoenix Swartz, thinking she had met the man of her dreams finds herself married to a monster. He is immediately demanding, domineering and cruel. Her life has taken a turn she didn't expect and she has no clue on how to extract herself from her situation.
-----> I want to mention that I was confused by a couple of sentences that seemed to contradict one another near the beginning of the book.
"Charles was average height and intelligent. He is strong and resourceful."
"Charles was the most polite, handsome, most intelligent man I ever knew."
Were these observations from before and after she married? Or before and after she met John? This threw me off when trying to understand Phoenix's character. She succumbed to her situation so quickly that it seemed as though she had no life or friends prior to meeting Charles whom she could ask for help to escape her abusive marriage.
With that being said, this book has a very uplifting message. That message is there are good people in this world who want nothing more than to help others and live a godly life. John Westerling was that kind of person. A loving father, a good Samaritan, a servant leader. He had strong beliefs and values. He was an unconventional hero in the fact that he wasn't quick to move faster than his beliefs allowed him. I liked his character, a lot.
When he happens upon Phoenix in her yard struggling with a project and stops to help, their chance meeting sets her on a new course of hope.
Please understand that while I had a few issues with the way the book was written, I did enjoy the story overall and kept reading as Cathy had me hooked. I wanted to know what was going to happen next.
My favorite thing about the book was Anna. John's daughter was such a beautiful and precocious child. She very intuitively knew that Phoenix needed reassurance that things would be okay and that she and her father would be Phoenix's friends. She taught Phoenix as much about life and love as Phoenix taught her about other things.
While the dialog seemed overly formal for the relationship Phoenix and John had, (she often called him John Westerling, when just calling him John would've been more natural) and the lack of contractions during many of their conversations, the story was strong enough to hold my interest.
Cathy's story show that there is life after becoming involved with the wrong person. How faith in god and people can help change a bad situation into a better one and that if you hold your beliefs strong, you can overcome just about anything. I liked the message and hope that Cathy's next book has an equally positive tone.
Ok I will have to tell you the first chapters in this book will make you cry. I mean cry ugly tears. The abuse poor Phoenix goes through just breaks your heart. She falls in love and marries the supposed man of her dreams. But. he turns into a tyrant who abuses her so badly. She is just destroyed . Until the day she plants well attempts to plant a rosebush. And an angel comes into her life in the form of John Westerling and his daughter Anna.
As things happen Phoenix and John become more but will Phoenix realize that she deserves this man and his daughter before it is too late.
Cathy has taken us on an emotional rollercoaster with this novel. The depths of hell that Phoenix went through at the beginning will just break your heart. I had to walk away for a bit while reading this part. As someone who went through the ugliness of abuse. I knew what Phoenix was going through. I cried ugly tears as I read. Phoenix was a very real character for me . Her pain and her ultimate walking through the fire to be reborn is very real. It honestly takes that one special loving person that will help build that confidence and realize that you are deserving of love and happiness.
Cathy writes with such a passion and she conveys the feelings of these characters and shows us the emotions and love between these two people. It is all not sad ugly in this book. There are some awesome fun times to be had by everyone also. The lake scene is so cute well any scene with sweet little Anna in it is great. Anna seems like the soothing balm between both of them.
This book is about strength and perseverance and ultimately survival of both your heart and soul. To realize that you are worthy of the love and respect. Which Cathy writes in spades. This book is so real and honest. The characters are just honest and written with such care. HONESTLY you can not help but fall in love. Cheer for them and hug them when life comes up and hurts them. There was one scene in the book when you finally feel Phoenix come into her power and realize that she would do anything and everything for her Anna and John. I so cheered when she took on Cat the ex wife. I was so proud of her .
So if you want a book that will bring out all kinds of emotions . That isn't full of brooding alpha males and naïve young women chasing after them. If you want a sweet love story that evolves this is the book for you. This is a refreshing loving book that I was so happy to read. Check out this book when it comes out at the end of November. I promise you will not be disappointed.
This is such a great book to read! We meet Phoenix in what should be the happiest time of her life, and it quickly becomes the darkest. She marries Charles believing him to be her soul mate and he turns out to be the devil to her. After years of abuse... Phoenix gets a second chance at a happy life. She meets John Westerling, and he helps her through sick and sin. Phoenix learns what true love really looks like, but she has pain and damage in her heart from all the abuse she suffered. John's daughter Anna, breaks further into her heart and helps to heal what is broken, and the father and daughter pair show her the love of the Lord with the patience of Job! For Phoenix, things may not last when an evil hearted woman shows back up into John's life and tries to kill all happiness for the three of them. Even though it may not seem it, Phoenix is a strong character. She has the strength to honor what she believes to be the right thing to do, even at her own peril. We see her fight and grow and I love that about her. I loved seeing her change into the real Phoenix that she was born to be. John.... OMGee... What woman wouldn't want to be blessed to find a man like him?? He is the full deal! Go and read this book for yourself, it is amazing, and you will feel every emotion imaginable while reading it. I absolutely LOVE Cathy Jackson, and this book is a clear reflection of her heart.
I suggest because of the domestic violence in the book that only mature readers who can handle this topic read Bloom.
I should preface my review with two facts: one is that I had an ARC copy and the second is that I'm not a Christian. (I'm an atheist.)
Those facts aside, I found Bloom to be a sweet little fantasy of a book, very warm and cozy once you'd moved through the first sixth or so. The violence is occasionally quite graphic, which I didn't enjoy, but the underlying themes of salvation, healing, and second chances were well nuanced and enjoyable.
I found that some of the Christian themes in the plot held the story up in unexpected ways. There is a distinct heat level to this book, but the text fails to rise to its suggestion. Even the Bible had the Songs of Solomon, but I understand that most prefer their Christian novels to be squeaky-clean. Bloom certainly delivers there. I've never seen a first kiss that delayed, it became a gentle running joke.
I gave it three stars for being so very far out of my realm of experience and for my discomfort with the more graphic portions of the novel. It was still quite uplifting, but you have to wade through some unpleasantness to get there. It was worth the trip.
Don’t let the abuse at the beginning put you off this book. I will note it’s severe mentally and physically and it extends through the first 20%. Her husband really angered me. His behavior toward Phoenix was atrocious. I must tell you I cheered when he died. That’s part of what sets this book off from other Christian romances that I’ve read. Now for the best parts of the story. You really see this woman bloom as you read on. That’s the best way I can describe it. The title really does reflect what happens as you make your way through the pages. She meets John who is a landscaper and it’s obvious the chemistry is there. There’s no way you could mistake it. He’s kind, considerate, and everything else her husband wasn’t. I could actually see myself doing the things he did but I’m a hopeless romantic. His little daughter, Anna, is just cutest. I’d want her for my own. This book really is a gem and I heartily recommend it. I did receive an ARC for a review.
**Received a copy in exchange for an honest review**
Bloom, another one my favorite books this year. From the start up to the last, everything is great. The characters are easy to love and relate with. The story is amazing, full of emotions!
The characters, John and Phoenix are great. John, an interesting guy. He's sweet and an amazing father to his daughter. Despite the issue with his daughter's issue, he's an open minded and a God fearing person. Phoenix, a woman with a kind heart. Because of her husband's abuse to her, she's still an amazing person in a way that she still have the courage to be herself.
As the story goes, many interesting things will happen that will change the lives of these two characters. The story is great and I loved it! It's relate-able and interesting. What I love about Bloom is that the emotions of the characters and the scenes are easily felt. The way the story ended is amazing. Loved it!! Ms. Cathy nailed it!!
Bloom is a very emotionally-charged, sweet, inspirational romance by Cathy Jackson and boy did she deliver. I loved Phoenix which actually surprised me. I'm a fan of strong female characters and for much of the book she seemed like anything but. HOWEVER...like her name suggests, she rose from the ashes of the horrors of physical and mental abuse and became her own woman. John Westerling was perfect. He was Godly and devout in his faith, and yet very human. He had flaws. He was HOT. Yep. Hot. And I thought his character was brilliant.
I'd give this 4.5 stars, but rounded up to the fifth. Some scenes were a bit overly smooshy for me. And they used each other's names so much in conversation that it distracted me a bit at times. But overall, I just fell in love with the story, plot and characters. I even wanted to claw Catriona's eyeballs out. That says it all, folks. Cathy Jackson delivered.
This is a touching and beautiful story. This book grabbed my emotions from the start. I'm not a person who outwardly shows emotion, that being said this book made me cry (sad, angry tears and happy, peaceful tears). Out of all the Christian books I've read (yes I've read alot), this is definitely in my top two! This is an extremely well written story of the struggles we face in life and in our journey to faith.
This book starts in Phoenix's marriage to Charles. Charles is one who will definitely bring out emotions in you. All the worst emotions that is - disgust, aversion, rage, loathing, anger, contempt, and so many others.
John, on the other hand, you love and pull for from the moment he he first introduces himself to Phoenix. Having had his life pulled apart, John strives to be a better person for his daughter, Anna. Giving his life to the Lord, he has succeeded. Meeting Phoenix, he realizes she needs him, and he needs her. But can he convince her?
Phoenix brings out emotions of pity, sadness, hope, wonder and happiness. You only get rare and vague glimpses into her past before Charles, but I feel she must have once been rooted in religion and had a happy family. Feeling ignored and punished, she just lost faith. People question why she stays but she tells you why, "he is my husband." In a world where divorce runs rampant and hardly anyone honors their vows (which are made to God, as well as spouse), I deeply admire her for standing by hers. I am NOT saying I believe woman should stay in abusive relationships, because I don't! I just admire her strength and honor, especially when she professes not to be good or have faith. (I'm a beliver of "the parable of the flood" in other words take his help when offered, don't have your own expectations.) Anyway! Phoenix is strong and admirable, but she doesn't see this. Will John be able to help her realize her worth and help her on her journey to salvation? Or will their pasts come between them?
