Review : Sint-Petersburg, dat voor 1991 nog Leningrad heette, is ongetwijfeld de meest Europese stad van Rusland. Sint-Petersburg is in de eerste plaats natuurlijk de stad van Peter de Grote. Nog geen tien jaar nadat deze eigenzinnige tsaar de stad had gesticht, werd het al de hoofdstad van het grote Rusland. Later werd die eer weer toebedeeld aan Moskou.
Het is vooral de tsaristische periode die zijn stempel op de stad heeft gedrukt. Iedere tsaar of tsarina had natuurlijk zijn eigen smaak, en liet uit megalomanie de stad volbouwen. Tot de mooiste monumenten van Sint-Petersburg behoren de Hermitage, de Sint-Izaäkskathedraal, Alexander Nevski-klooster, de Kerk van de Verlosser op het Bloed, het Zomerpaleis en nog veel meer. Dwars door de stad loopt de meest beroemde straat van Rusland, de vier kilometer lange Nevski Prospekt, die je langs weerszijden overdondert met zijn prachtige bouwwerken.
In deze stad kun je je letterlijk laten onderdompelen in de cultuur. Er zijn tientallen boeiende musea, zoals het overal ter wereld gekende Hermitage of het Russisch Museum. Maar Sint-Petersburg heeft nog een betere reputatie op het vlak van podiumkunsten. Het Russisch ballet werd hier uitgevonden en de stad heeft verschillende beroemde componisten voortgebracht, zoals Tsjaikovski. Niet alleen componisten trouwens, maar ook artiesten en schrijvers, zoals Dostojevski, wiens boeken zich bijna vaak in zijn geliefde stad afspelen.
Sint-Petersburgs ligging is uniek: de stad is gebouwd rond een netwerk van kanaaltjes en rivieren en talloze fraaie bruggen bepalen mee het uitzicht van de stad. Een uniek fenomeen zijn de Witte Nachten, de zomernachten in juni en juli, waarin het nooit helemaal donker wordt. De Witte Nachten zijn in geen enkele andere stad zo leuk als in Sint-Petersburg. Je kunt de hele nacht wakker blijven en genieten van één van de vele culturele evenementen. Cultuurliefhebbers zullen zich op citytrip in deze stad geen seconde vervelen!
In de Capitool Reisgids St.-Petersburg is de stad opgedeeld in vijf wijken, met een apart deel Buiten St.-Petersburg. Elke wijk wordt in een apart hoofdstuk beschreven. Ieder hoofdstuk bevat foto's, illustraties en kaarten, opengewerkte tekeningen en plattegronden van de belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden en driedimensionale beelden van historische wijken. Voor liefhebbers is er een aantal wandelingen uitgestippeld. Met de frisse nieuwe lay-out, nieuwe hotel- en restaurantpagina's, verbeterde kaarten en nieuwe reisroutes heeft de reisgids een complete make-over gekregen.
Deze mooi uitgevoerde reisgids over St. Petersburg is door de aanstaande reiziger uitstekend te gebruiken om de reis voor te bereiden. De algemene informatie die de gids geeft over onder andere geschiedenis, architectuur, winkelen en vervoer, is goed. Tevens geeft de gids informatie over het gebied buiten St. Petersburg zoals de steden Novgorod, Pavlovsk en paleizen als Peterhof en Tsarskoje Selo. Een voordeel van deze gids is dat de straatnamen op de kaarten zowel in het Cyrilisch als het Latijn zijn geschreven. Ook is er een korte lijst met uitdrukkingen en transcriptie.

Great guidebook for the beautiful city of St. Petersburg and some of the surrounding sights, with tons of pictures and helpful illustrations, background information, and a reasonably good selection of highlights and walking tours. Maybe a little more flipping back and forth than other guide books with the way it’s organized, but that’s manageable, and the pull-out map on thick glossy paper was a huge plus.

Well organized information with high quality photos. Still not persuaded that a trip to Russia is worth the hassle of getting a travel visa though.

All the DK travel books are gorgeous, full color and, as they say they "show you what others only tell you. This and the book on Stockholm were gifts from Michele's mom before we went to Scandanavia.
