Understand the sometimes-confusing business world with How Business Works, a user-friendly guide to understanding business jargon and corporate structure. Whether you're looking to get ahead at work, want to start your own business, or just want to understand the business world better, How Business Works is a comprehensive guide that makes even difficult business concepts easy to understand. Learn everything you need to know without getting bogged down by boring textbooks. How Business Works offers helpful diagrams, infographics, and bite-size, step-by-step information, all in jargon-free text that's a pleasure to read. From basic business principles, like how the Board of Directors is structured, to more complicated financial concepts, like how to calculate depreciation, How Business Works is a great first-stop for business students and middle managers who want to understand business without the MBA.
Upon first glance, one might think that this is a children's book. There are plenty of bright colors and simple graphic illustrations. Don't be misled: This is a serious business book with not only a visual appeal, but plenty of substance, if carefully hidden. Not only would this make a good beginner's book for anyone just starting out in business (a college graduate), but it's also a good basic text for home investors, who are trying to understand a Profit and Loss statement or how IPOs come into being.
There are several basic divisions within the book covering everything from basic business elements to social media marketing to accounting principles, and everything in between. Sprinkled among the illustrations, there are also key points of information, such as the fact that the majority of European businesses operating today fall into the small to medium category. There's information about business ethics and human resources (the touchy-feely stuff) as well as hard-core data (figures and forms).
This is the type of encyclopedic volume that you can dip into anytime to exactly the section you might be curious about. Hear a business term on a TV talk show and want to know what if means? This is your book. It's clear, concise, but not so basic as to be worth less than many other, far less visually appealing books in its category on the market today.
Definitely 5 stars! An enlightening book.of big picture of business world. Very systematic, step by step and not boring as everything is presented in the form of infographics as well examples from various type of business, from fast food chain to oil and gas industry. Totally recommended as quick introduction for a dummy to the whole business process.
I don't know if you could find success from this book but gives you a general overview of how companies start, how companies are financed and how companies are managed. I loved the simple charts and explanations.
DK has designed a basic business book that is both interesting and fun to read. This is the exact opposite of the boring text books that I remember from my business classes.
Business principles are broken down into an easy to understand format using charts, illustrations, infographics, and concise explanations. Pages are filled with interesting facts and statistics which are arranged in side bars, boxes, and headings. Every page is in full-color and brightly illustrated. This format makes it much easier to grasp a concept and is perfect for the visual learner.
The book is divided into four main sections—a general overview of how companies work, finance, sales and marketing, and operations and production—along with many subsections plus a handy index at the end for easy reference.
Whether one is just starting out in the business world, is in need of an easy to understand reference book, or just wants to know more about how things work, this book is a great choice to have on your shelf.
This is a good crash course on the fundamentals of business. As someone who never took business classes I found much of the information in this book very valuable. The eye pleasing graphics were very helpful in understanding concepts, and the topics/chapters had a good flow to their organization. There were quite a bit of spelling and grammatical errors, but nothing too outrageous.
So interesting book in its content and design. It gives a quick overview in every aspect in business for non-specialists, so you can dig deeper later in the field you are interested in. The design of the book in an info-graphic way is very creative and unique. It attracts you more and more to the book.
I would highly recommend checking out this book for all of your general business inquiries as this book talks about pretty much everything business. Here's a video review of the book: https://youtu.be/YRmcY4TWrfI
This is a textbook full of lots of useful infographics for an overview of, well, how business works. I was looking for something that gave a general and broad overview of business and I found this to be very digestible and fun read on that subject.
Perfect reminder for someone like me in the middle of his career to refresh the main pillars of business. Visualization top! As a reference guide to keep in your library. Also recommended for fresh graduates!

A graphical representation of how business works cannot be expected to cover a ton of detail, however this book does get most of the details in place.
The authors also expound well on the key themes of Sales and Marketing, Finance and Operations. One can learn a lot from this book.
This book would be interesting to the following constituencies: 1. Students with some understanding of business 2. New hires who are looking to understand other domains. 3. Mid-level managers who may want to brain storm fresh ideas in Sales and Marketing and Operations; nothing like going to the basics 4. Senior and Higher management who would want to ensure that the best ideas and practices listed there are indeed a part of their firm's culture.
The graphics and accompanying examples are simple, clear and add greatly to the understanding of the reader.
After reading this book, I realized how hard it is to corporate a company.
I thought that the freelance style of working on projects by teaming up with others was the most comfortable and free way to live freely without being tied down by time.
Free time is the most important thing, even with small amounts of money.
Awesome entry-level big picture outlay of the models that are relevant today.
Then again, looking forward, we'd like a thing that's totally different. We know that GDP is not a good measure.... but then again... Most people want to start a biz just because of $$
Really this was a DNF. For no bad reason, I just felt like this wasn’t helping me too much in the indie publishing business. But still, pretty good book, easy to understand because of the graphics.
This book is a solid, well-organized primer on business fundamentals wrapped in beautiful DK graphics. It covers everything from starting a company to managing employees, making complex ideas feel digestible through diagrams and real-world examples. The visual layout is genuinely helpful - you can actually understand topics like mergers, CRM systems, and supply chains without drowning in jargon.
The Good Stuff: The breadth is impressive. Topics range from sole proprietorships and franchises to lean production and corporate social responsibility. Each section explains the "why" behind business practices, not just the "how." The book doesn't talk down to readers, and sections on marketing, finance, and human resources feel balanced and practical.
The Frustrating Parts: For something so comprehensive, it sometimes feels like skimming the surface. Want deep dives into specific areas? You won't find them here. Some examples feel dated (the book is from 2015), particularly in the digital marketing and technology sections. Also, it's very Western-business-focused; global perspectives are limited.
The Real Takeaway: This is perfect for someone completely new to business—a curious person, student, or someone changing careers who needs to understand how companies actually work. It's not a reference manual or a strategic business guide.
Think of it as a friendly tour guide explaining the landscape rather than a detailed map.
