Waiting for Earl to Die and other stories

Rate this book
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be….

A fading pop star whose memory is beginning to slip on her farewell tour.

An old, cantankerous man who isn’t ready to die.

A little girl who both is and isn’t exactly what she appears to be.

A man living with severe food allergies who would give absolutely anything for a cure.

Everyone has a story hidden deeply inside themselves, but not everyone realizes exactly what that story is whispering into their ears.

Lydia Schoch had me from the first page of the first story. Hardly into it I knew I was in for a wildly delicious ride and in deft hands. I seldom pick up a collection of short stories and have never read much science fiction, but Waiting for Earl to Die makes me want to re-think both.

Schoch moves from one created world to another which each story. She takes us into the mind of someone being inserted into a donor body for the next go-round of biotech reincarnation. We stumble home with Jerome as he begins to understand the unintended consequences of his allergy treatments. Crossing from death into the next world throws us off kilter as the characters struggle to quite literally pull themselves back together again.

The reader's passage is much easier, as Schoch is a master at taking us into the characters' realities within the first sentences. With an economy of words and a sharp eye for detail, she brings each story to vivid life. Tuck this one onto your e-reader for some thoroughly satisfying reading.

This is a truly special book, a compilation of highly imaginative and thoughtful short-stories. I can say with complete honesty that every one made me smile and pause for a moment to think before moving on.

I look forward to reading more from Lydia.

From story to story I kept wanting more. Each scene grabbed me and drew me inside the storyline. Begging for sequels to devour. Excellent fresh and very unique fantasy writer!
