The Rub Down by Gina Sheldon

I went into this book blind, meaning- I didn't read the synopsis or anything about the book before I agreed to read the book. When I agree to review a book, I don't want anything to sway MY opinion of the book. I follow a few book blogs, I always see the books they think that are the best book of the month, year. I try to read those, they are the most popular books, and several of those are not the greatest books. I want to show them some of these great indie author books, and say see, look at these books.
The Rub Down by Gina Sheldon, is a sweet original contemporary romance. It is so refreshing to read a romance that focuses on, well on romance and not all sex. This takes us back to when there was all of that tension and built of desire. You can just feel it leaping off of the page. Yes, I like all the smutty stuff too but, I love this sweeter and way more romantic stuff. In my opinion, a lot of romance novels today have taken the romance out of the book and just replace it with hot steamy time. There is a place for that and we all like that but I love the romance.
I'm sure I'm just old school, I got married 23 years ago to my high school sweetheart. Things are different now and people just fall into bed together with just a look at each other all the time. That was not how I was, maybe I was just a "good girl" but to me, you had this had this connection with each other, just like Luke and Alexa had with each other. You have "Lust" at first sight! Things simmer and romance gets to happen! Sweet, make my heart swoon romance!
Just because they didn't jump straight into bed together doesn't mean they didn't have smexy time together. Sheldon gives them so much sexual tension, and desire runs wild between these two! Luke! Oh Luke, I have never wanted a book MAN - (no, he isn't a boy) to be real like I wanted him to be real, but, it still wouldn't matter I'm happily married. Everybody will want Luke, he will be a household name!

Gina Sheldon did an exemplary job on her debut book, she was able to express deep, concise emotions and build intensity. She shows promise and talent. I wonder, if there will be a book for Danny and Addison? I just felt like there could have been a love connection there. I would like this to even be a series.

I give The Rub Down 4 stars

What a lovely surprise this was. Ms. Gina Sheldon has created a beautifully sweet story around one of the worst things to happen in our recent past. Even though the book is set in today's time, it does reference the bombing at the Boston Marathon. It is a beautiful story of overcoming fear and moving on for Alexa and the awesome support system around her that makes this story flow. Luke becomes part of that support system almost immediately after meeting Alexa. He is a massage therapist, who is co-owner of the spa named "The Rub Down".....hmmmm....interesting!! hahaha ;) Alexa's training coach, Jeff, sets up the initial appointment at TRD, and insists that Luke be the one to work on Alexa personally. This is where the story really takes off. Luke and his best friend Danny made a pact when opening TRD, that they would NEVER get involved with a client....but Alexa is a game changer for Luke!!! :) (read the book to find out more!!)

I love the side characters, Danny, Addison, Jessica and Elle. I hope Ms. Sheldon gives us more in the future on this little group because this was such a great book. I'm a greedy girl....so of course, I want more of Luke and Alexa too!!!

Please go out and read this jem. I don't think you will be disappointed!! :)

I'm a blogger but had to shut down for a couple months but I'm back and the first book I read when I'm back interest me just with the synopsis. Well I was right to read it I Read it in one sitting I haven't read in one sitting for a while and I missed books like that where I don't want to put it down.
The Rub Down was funny, sexy, and so heartfelt I live in Massachusetts so the Boston bombing hit close to home my sister lived so close to the bombing so I understood Alexa ' s emotions she was close to being in the middle of the bombing. Luke is so amazing his words would help anyone. He's so loving and kind hearted and obviously sexy as hell. They are perfect for each other and I'm in love with Addison and Danny they are the perfect best friends for Luke and Alexa.
This is the first book I've read by Gina Sheldon and it won't be the last after this book. I'll be spreading the word about this one it's that good. You will not be disappointed.

Great debut novel.

An author friend of mine recommended this book. It was a really nice story. Just steamy enough and not overloaded with unnecessary angst. I enjoyed getting to know both characters by way of a dual POV. I hope to read more from Gina Sheldon. Nicely done!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 star read

This was the story of Alexa and Luke. Alexa was training for the Boston marathon and her trainer recommended that she go get a sports massage with his friend Luke. The attraction was instant between the two. Even though it is not as scandalous as many others, this could be considered a taboo read. He was a masseuse and she was his client. Luke had made a promise with his best friend and business partner that they would never cross the line and date/sleep with a client because of the horror stories they'd heard about businesses going under because of "happy ending" and sexual harassment claims. They both felt a connection, but Luke struggled with his attraction and need to connect with Alexa because of his promise to his friend (and worry for his business). They eventually work through their issues and find their HEA.

This was an easy, fast paced, read. It had some steam, a little angst, and some giddy/cheesy moments. I was hesitant to read this book at first when I read that she was a survivor of the bombing (that occurred 1 year previous to the story), because I was worried that it would be focused on that in a PTSD type story. I like those types of stories, but I have to be in a certain mood to go there. It did address her anxiety when participating in the race, but it wasn't a main focus in the story. I liked Luke's positive outlook when consoling her. Overall I did enjoy the book, and it was a relatively light read.

The Rub Down is a sweet romance that has a sexy edge and leaves you with the feeling that you can overcome your fears if you have the right person by your side encouraging you. The relationship between Luke and Alexa is a slow work up since Luke is her massage therapist and he doesn’t date his clients. The attraction is instant for both of them but they don’t act on it right away which for me was a good thing, well up to a point it was. After a while I was just like get on with it already even though I understood Luke’s reasoning after a while I kind of just didn’t care anymore if they ever had sex. Alexa had fears in regards to the Boston Marathon, she was in it during the bombing the previous year and only about a block or two away when they bombs went off. She finally expresses her fears to Luke and I loved how he not just comforted her but help her work past them.

Overall, for me, The Rubdown was a pretty good read. I would actually like to see more from not just Luke and Alexa but the other characters as well. So if you are looking for a sweet romance, that has a message of healing and hope with a side of sexual tension that is off the charts hot then make sure you check out The Rub Down.

"Alexa, you mean the world to me. You were my rule changer. The person I wasn't even looking for, but always dreamt of."

Awe Luke and Alexa I adore you so much!! This was such fantastic Debut novel by Ms. Sheldon! It's was fun, sexy, steamy and so sweet. Luke has a way with words that would make anyone swoon and I was so gripped by this story and I could feel the sexual tension coming off the pages! The couple and their friends are so likable and relatable I felt like I could jump right in there with them! It truly was a beautiful and real love story!

The book is based in Boston and a HUGE part of it revolves around the Boston Marathon and the bombing. Gina did an incredible job representing the city and honoring the strength of all Bostonians and especially those effecting by the bombings. She really did show the strength and courage they have to push through and come back stronger than ever! Well done!!

The Rub Down was a sweet story about Alexa and Luke. They have an instant attraction toward one another. What I like most about this story is that Gina didn’t write a story about I just met you, but I love you more than the sun let’s jump in bed together. She built up their friendship, feeling and let them get to know more about each other. Alexa was beautiful but had a bit of a hang ups about the marathon she was running. Luke was just the person to help heal her body and mind, and he was well to help her through it all. They had a friendship built of love what would make a relationship strong. This story was very touch and sweet and passionate. I really enjoyed it. I look forward to reading more of Gina’s book. I gave this book a 3 ½ stars.

What fantastic debut effort by this up and coming author! A quick and happy read that really "gets" the fun, romance and adventure of a new relationship, while not getting too campy. Perfect for an afternoon at the beach or an otherwise easygoing day.

Sheldon really pulls off the two-voiced technique, where the story is told in first person but from the perspective of two different characters. I find that most authors either (a) make everyone sounds the same, and lose the point of two voices or (b) make the characters so different that they become caricatures in instead of relatable people. Sheldon strikes the right balance in The Rub Down. Read it. You won't regret it!

I was a little uncertain what I was going to get when I started The Rub Down by Gina Sheldon. I honestly thought when the book first started that is a little racy, but then you read more and it turns into a fabulous love story. And that is exactly what it is a love story that gives you some laughs along with sweet and romantic.

If you ask his clients they would say that Luke Stratton has magic hands. He knows just what to do to help anyone find ecstasy through touch of a massage, but his partner and him have one very specific rule- Do Not Date The Clientele! This is a rule that he has lived by until the day Alexa Williams walked in for a massage. Then all bets were off because there was just something that drew Luke to Alexa. He wanted to know everything about her and wanted to be with her, but he did not want to jeopardize his business. But the thing his he can’t let his feelings get pushed aside and not be able to see what might come of having her in his life. All he continues to tell his self is that I am helping her get thru the Boston Marathon and then she is fair game. He can pursue her and see what happens from there.

Alexa Williams has been sent to The Rub Down by her trainer in hopes that they can help her stay in good standing with her body until she runs The Boston Marathon. The day she shows up for her first massage and meets Luke Stratton sparks fly and she is unsure of what she is feeling, but she knows that she has a connection with the man. After giving in and allowing the feelings to be known to one another they agree that nothing can happen until after she runs the marathon and is no longer a client at The Rub Down, but when another female client sees them at a fundraiser for the marathon all bets are off when the client hasn’t taken the hint that Luke does not want her. But the women decides to make problems for Luke and Alexa. Can they get things figured out in order to be together or will they let things stand between what could be a love of a lifetime?

This book definitely falls in the contemporary sweet romances. I bought the book because I had never read one that involved a massage therapist. After reading the blurb, it looked like something that I might enjoy. The sexual tension in the book worked, until the actual act. It fell short for me. There was so much build up to it, then it seemed to be over in a few paragraphs. My biggest issue is that nothing really happens in the book. There were no twists & turns, no real dramatic scenes. One of the things that I noticed though was that as the the book went on, Alexa's language seemed to get more crude and Luke got really cheesy (a lot). I'm all for language when it's needed, but it seemed like filler in this story. Sometimes instead of helping a story, it can hurt it. I believe that it all depends on the character. I didn't feel like Alexa was that type of character. The "f" word seemed to be thrown in at inappropriate times. If you're looking for a feel good, drama free story, then this is for you. I'm not counting this author out for me. I would read another book from her to see how she has grown. I realize that the first book is always a huge learning curve.

I found this book to light, engaging, and easy to read. I am really impressed with Ms. Sheldon's debut work. Her plot flowed smoothly, her characters were well developed and I think she did a fabulous job with this book. Her conflict resolution was brilliant and Luke and Alexa's characters are extremely believable. I'm looking forward to reading Ms. Sheldon's future works, especially if the quality remind the same or improves.

This book rubbed me the right way (SPOILERY)

MILD SPOILERS AHEAD

I enjoyed The Rub Down. It's not your typical romance book, despite its name. The main & supporting characters are great. There was no unnecessary drama. Our hero wasn't a man-whore & our heroine wasn't weak or a virgin or emotionally scarred. We get to see the relationship grow & develop beautifully.

Well done

2 out of 5 Stars

Luke Stratton is a masseur and the owner of Boston's high-end spa The Rub Down. He has his hands on beautiful women day in and day out, and to avoid scandals, he and his business partner swore never to date any clients. But Luke never felt attracted to any of his female clients until he met Alexa Williams, who needs his therapeutic help for prepping for the Boston Marathon.

Will Luke be able to keep his hand off her?

What I loved about this book:

The idea of it...

What I felt needed improvement:

The flat storyline
The boring characters...
The lack of context and side-character evolution

I stumbled onto this book because one of the authors I followed on Goodreads had rated this as a five-star read - and since the plot sounded interesting, I though why not?

While the opening of the book was pretty funny, the rest of the book really couldn't keep me entertained. The pace was excruciatingly slow and with very little action. The storyline remained quite flat all along the book because it only evolved around Luke and Alexa waiting for her to run the Boston Marathon to finally get it on.

You would have thought that the fact that Luke and his business partner had a "no-dating-clients" rule would have made the storyline a bit more complicated, but it the end it came way too easy. Not much happened to really get a rise out of me. There was a small twist in the plot around the 80% mark, but it the issue disappeared as fast as it came up.

I also disliked the fact that there was only very little background on the main characters and even less on the side characters. That's perhaps one of the reasons why I couldn't really find the connection between Luke and Alexa - it was insta-lust that slowly transitioned into something more. Well, Luke and Alexa had some cute moments and interactions, but it wasn't enough to make the bond come to life in my imagination.

Everything evolved around the Boston Marathon, and why Alexa is so insistent on wanting to run it. She wasn't able to get to the finishing line the year before, as the Marathon was victim of terrorist attacks - so now she wants to put her fears behind her and do that thing. But that whole (non-)issue was just way too drama-laden and occupied way too much space in The Rub Down . I was so annoyed at how big a deal the main characters made out of it!

Last but not least, I wasn't a huge fan of the writing either, because the author has a tendency to call out one too many details in a way that makes the character who is narrating sound slightly weird. It just didn't flow so well and feel very natural.

Anyway, I'll keep this review short, The Rub Down unfortunately wasn't for me, because it deeply lacked in terms of storyline and in terms of the characters.

My Review:

4.5 stars!

Do not let the title of this book deceive you, in fact the title is addressed almost immediately in the book giving you a bit a humor to start. I really adored this book, it wasn't what I expected and I love that.

Luke (H) is a professional massage therapist, and he is professional in all aspects of the word. He owns the upscale spa with his best friend and they make it a point to keep it that way. The spa has a good reputation and they would never risk jeopardizing it or anyone's work and ethic. That is until Alexa (h) walks into Luke's room. She is training for the marathon and he is her new therapist. He's never reacted to a woman on his table like this before but he is determined to keep the client/therapist relationship...at least until the marathon is over.

This is Alexa's second marathon, the last ended brutally after the Boston bombing but she is determined to get through it this year. When old memories resurface she doesn't know if she'll make it. Will Luke be able to be there for her and motivate her? Or will he step away because of the temptation? And will Alexa make it across the finish line?

This book is not about a hot horny masseuse that can't keep his hands off of women. It is about that fine line between relationships and professionalism.  Luke is not a cocky guy that thinks he can have any women he wants, he is all things good. Of course he's had his moments but he never risks his license for them. He cares for Alexa and wants nothing more to just be in her life and break down the walls so she can accomplish her ultimate goal. They both work together running, and sharing things about themselves. They take their time learning about the other and becoming friends.

I loved the slow build up. I mean you know right away that they both are attracted to each other and are feeling more than they want to, but it's not rushed. They respected each other too, which I really felt in reading the story. I don't feel that a lot in reading, sometimes I feel like the H, especially, doesn't really respect the h. If anything Luke admired Alexa and held her with great regard. Both of the characters were so likable and when it was over I just wanted more of them.

Great debut for Gina Sheldon.

I recommend!

The Rub Down is the debut stand alone novel from author Gina Sheldon. Alexa is training for another go at the Boston Marathon, determined to overcome her experience from the previous year. She enlists the help of Luke to keep her body in prime condition. A forbidden connection becomes a spark neither can deny, but is the risk worth the reward?

Despite this being her first novel, you'd never be able to tell. The words flow seamlessly, creating a story that is heartbreaking and hopeful, one you'll become enamored with instantly. I was hooked from the prologue. Curiosity held me captive, driving my need to find out more about these characters and watch their story unfold. I fell in love with Alexa and Luke. Sheldon develops their personalities, flaws, fears, and ambitions creating fictional people you can identify with even though your experiences may differ greatly from theirs. There is a beauty and simplicity in these characters although their emotional baggage is complex.

The story is both familiar and new. This book contains some of my favorite Romance genres -- breaking rules to explore a forbidden relationship and finding closure from a horrific trauma. Alexa is searching for the carefree girl she once was. Grasping to find the control she once had. The Rub Down centers around the Boston Marathon bombings which is a topic I haven't seen addressed in fiction. I applaud the author for approaching a subject that is so fresh and raw as proceedings in this incident are still open. She handles the sensitive nature of this tragedy with grace, elegance, and genuine respect to those affected.

If you're looking to explore a new author, I highly recommend you introduce yourself to Gina Sheldon. The Rub Down is nothing short of spectacular and far exceeded any expectations I had reading the work of a debut writer. She pushed me to feel every emotion and insecurity Luke and Alexa experienced and did it while making me smile and swoon. I can't wait to see what this author publishes next.

Fun

Loved that this book is about running! Alexa is training for the Boston Marathon the year after the bombing. It's a special occasion for the Boston residents, the bomb survivors, and the athletes who could not complete the course that year. Alexa was one of the athletes who was detained before completing the marathon when the bombing, so it was special to her.

Luke is the co-owner of The Rub Down, a spa that specializes in massages. Alexa's trainer, Jeff, recommended her to Luke, to help her in her muscle pains caused by the hard training. When they meet it was Bang! Instant liking and a lot if intrigue.

Luke and Danny, the other owner, have a policy of not dating their clients. So this constricts Luke in expressing his interest in Alexa, but on the other hand, the attraction is so great. It was very difficult to navigate the attraction while respecting the policies, and the author hit it.

The owner did a great job of balancing Luke's and Alexa's attraction. I loved that she made Alexa as self assured, beautiful but not conceited, and very ladylike. Luke was all gentleman and passion. Loved their banter, loved Addison, Alexa's best friend. She was supportive but not intrusive like other best friends I're read in other books. The love interest progressed great like it happens with two well-balanced, mature individuals. There was no angst or insecurity or abandonement issues here and it was a blessed change.

Only things I didn't like was that sometimes the pace dragged a littlee and made the book read like a diary. The conflict appeared late in the book and was resolved too easy. The part I liked the best was the narrative of the actual marathon as Alexa ran it. I'm a runner of 10K races, with ambitions of running a 1/2 marathon and totally loved all the running references, very accurate and real. Great job!

The Rub Down. I really enjoyed this book. It was different and I found it romantic. Alexa and Luke knew right from the start that what they shared was so special, one of a kind and definitely not one-sided. Luke is the co-owner of The Rub Down which is where he specialises in massage therapy. And that is exactly how he meets Alexa. You have a gorgeous, female athlete who also co-owns her own business and loves what she does. This is where their own love story begins. We watch their highs and lows, their love being developed and their friendships never wavering. The Rub Down is about meeting that one person who can make your heart beat faster and slower at the same time with just one look. It's about never forgetting the friendships that's you've made and making it stronger. And being with someone who loves you for who you are despite your insecurities and disbeliefs. This was a beautiful love story and one that had comedy, romance, sports and more romance. Definitely a must-read.

The Rub Down is an excellent debut novel from new author Gina Sheldon. I enjoyed the characters and found them to be well developed and relatable. The storyline, centered around the Boston Marathon is very applicable and relevant to coincide with the release date. I thought this a brilliant choice and the heart strings were definitely pulled for the female character, struggling with the memories of running the race on that fateful date and trying to overcome her fears by returning to conquer it again. Luke was hot, hot, hot! The steamier scenes are perfection-- just the right amount of romance, chemistry, and passion without being cheesy. I was definitely left feeling as though I needed a massage soon! Bravo to Sheldon on her first book and I look forward to reading more from her in the future!

Sometimes you want a book without a lot of angst, drama or tension. You want a sweet love story with "a happy ending" (pun intended). You want a guy and girl who aren't bruised and broken.

If that's what you want, then this is the book for you. Because of the premise of the story (a girl, Alexa, needs massage therapy while training for a marathon) this could have been a pretty tawdry story, but it wasn't. I REALLY liked that Luke and Danny had a set of morals and were unwilling to break them. I liked that they were honorable. The romance was sweet. The sex was good, and the story was heartwarming.

Because the premise of massage therapy was different than the typical, billionaire/ biker/ MMA/ stepbrother thing a lot of authors have going on right now, this story will stick with me, and that's a good thing.

Read on, people!

What a fun uplifting story

I enjoyed every second. This story is light for the most part but brings in some realities of real life and moment in time that will never be forgotten.
The characters were sweet and strong and the like "do you like what you see was not it" lol.
I love how the relationship professed naturally and the anticipation built up.
Luke is sexy as sin and will make you swoon.
Great debut for this new author. Congrats

Well, this was perfection. Being someone who's lived in and near Boston for half my life, this book just felt like reading a true story. The marathon bombing effected so many lives and it was such a sad day. The book just brought it back in a good way. I give the author an air high five for writing this flawless book. Luke was an amazing book boyfriend and Alexa such a strong beautiful woman. glad I found this gem and it's in the best of 2015.

Perseverance, determination, over coming fears, these are not always easy. Some times with the right people in your corner you can push through any thing. The Rub Down, starts on a very steamy note, but not all is what it seems. Many words have double meaning and Gina did a great job though out this story. What am I talking about? Try reading The Rub Down and find out. Great Story, I really enjoyed it.

I was gifted this book by the author. I loved this book. It's about attraction & falling in love. Luke is a masseuse Alexa is a personal shopper getting ready to run a marathon. She is referred to Luke by her trainer to ease muscle pain. That is when the sparks fly. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

Loved it! It was such a great read. The story moved fast. The characters were so much fun to learn about. Once you start reading it, you can't put it down. I ended up staying up late last night to finish it because I had to finish it.

I can't wait until Gina Sheldon writes another one.
