Rate this book
But Words Will Never Hurt Me is a story of overcoming verbal abuse, emotional abuse, and spiritual abuse. It reveals how suffering at the hands of a spousal abuser who didn't hit with fists but with words and indifference can affect the very psyche and individuality of a person. Is there hope for a brighter future after leaving an abusive marriage? This true story is reconstructed from journal entries with exact words and actions between the couple and their circle of friends. Del shows what she feels, how she reacts, and how she's affected by this toxic verbally abusive relationship. Todd’s words and actions speak for themselves. But Words Will Never Hurt A Story of Overcoming Abuse is accompanied by a workbook (sold separately) that walks the reader through the various types of abuse so others may find their way to a healthier emotional life.

I was disappointed in this book...

For very specific reasons, this book let me down. The actual WORDS the husband used would have been more useful, not recognizable for abuse victims. That being said, the emotional mask, the numbness, the self-blame I recognize VERY well. The book made me cry and journal, and THAT helped. Ms. Hungerford is brave. The warning of her book author counselor, that the husband was dangerous and that she could be dead in 5 years, was 100% true.

First, I am not in an abusive relationship and never have been. But, I have friends who are. The author of this account is an old friend of mine that I knew back in high school. Because of that I am deeply grateful that she bared her soul and let us see her heart. Thanks, Del! I wish I could meet up with her again, have lunch and play some clarinet duets together.

At the beginning of the book I thought the conversations between Del and her husband were stilted, dry, and immature. If I didn't already know her I think it would have been boring to read. The last part of the book, from when she left him until the end, were heart-wrenching. I only wish she had started earlier in the game. Specifically, how did they meet, what was their dating period like, wedding planning, etc. She began when they had been married only a few months and were having some communication problems. I think there were probably signs of what he was really like, but as she admits, she didn't see any.

My heart hurts for my friend because of the dark time of her life that were wasted with a verbal abuser. But, like many abuse survivors, Del is a stronger person now, and has restructured her life to help others in that situation.

I am definitely more enlightened now about abuse and hopefully can recognize the signs and be there for a woman going through it. In the past I have been quite dense about such things, and I feel I have the tools now to be more supportive.

Highly recommended for those in an unhealthy relationship, and for those who know someone in those circumstances.
