As short and fun as the first volume, with quite a bit of testosterone-driven stubbornness thrown in for good measure, this sequel to 'Frankie's Vamp' is the story of over 400-year-old vampire Bryce. Bryce is the second-in-command of Merrick (from book one) and can’t believe he finally found his mate when he encounters Lucas, a cop hunting the rogue vampires who have been flooding the city. There is only one problem: Lucas isn't gay and wants nothing to do with Bryce. As a result, the men, mainly Lucas, struggle, fight, and battle it out before they finally manage to find their way. Not that either one of them really changes, and that, like in the first book, was part of the fun for me in this short novella.

Bryce has lived for a very long time, has been friends with Merrick for centuries, and is more than a little envious that Merrick has found his mate and Bryce is still alone. When they do meet, and Lucas turns away in disgust, Bryce is devastated. Never mind the fact he accidentally mated them, so now their lives are connected and if he doesn’t get to drink from Lucas, he will die. And so will Lucas. Interestingly, Bryce is not the aggressive type, and while he is stubborn and will stand up for himself, he doesn’t go after Lucas. Mostly it is guilt, I suspect. I did enjoy this slight role reversal.

Lucas is a cop, the detective in charge of solving the murders the rogue vampires have caused. He was attacked by one such rogue himself and bears the scars to show it, so he is personally involved as well as professionally. He does notice something strange when he runs into Bryce for the first time, but vehemently denies he feels any attraction He keeps telling himself he is not gay, tries to sleep with a few women, but can’t. Utterly frustrated, he finally goes to see Bryce only to end up mated to him without his knowledge. It takes Merrick to alert him to the fact that Bryce is dying. Despite all his resistance, he isn’t willing to let the vampire give up on life, and embarks on the adventure of building a relationship.

If you like your vampire stories with all the traditional ingredients (lust, hot sex, and strong wills clashing), but you don’t want a story filled with too many clichés, give this one a try. If you enjoy stories about tough men battling it out, if you like reading stories with a hint of mystery and what looks like several serial killers on the loose, and if you're looking for a read that is hot and filled with tension, then you will probably like this novella.

This was a 3.5 star read. I wanted it to be higher, I really did. I loved the first book and the fact this was Bryce's book made me squeal like a little girl. But alas, this was not the romantic, sweet book I had hoped for. In fact, I found myself pissed off for a portion of the book and that did not make me happy.

Bryce was introduced in the first book. He's Merrick's second in command and also his best friend. He meets his mate, Luc, who arrests him in the club. Luc is a cop. A cop who was attacked by a rogue, who now is wary of vampires. But when he meets Bryce he's attracted to him. Luc is also straight.

I enjoyed the pace of the book and then we had the mating scene. Of course then that impacts Bryce and Luc's lives. But Luc doesn't realise that and it's up to Merrick to put things right. I wanted there to be a bit more, something.

Another thing that was missing was a reciprocal "I love you". It doesn't take a genius to work out who said it and who didn't say it. But it disappointed me a bit to not have it returned. Plus the fact Bryce had been through so much, it made me kind of sad... To put it mildly.

I can recommend this series to fans of the author or fans of vampires. I am really looking forward to book 3, which hopefully will be Hayden and Jared.

Okay, not as good as the firs, but still not too bad. I would consider these books to be a bit... Vamp-lite. The blood bits are very much down played and not a lot of details. The vamps are old, but don't take themselves too seriously. In fact most things are just... very much low-angst.

This one did leave on a bit of a cliffhanger, but more so about the sub-story arc with the bad vamps, but nothing that takes away from the point of the book, which are the two MCs. The bad vamps were sorta kinda of a thing in the 1st book, I expected them to be more so in the 2nd, since the MC is a cop and was attacked by one in the prologue, but still wasn't a big deal. Maybe in the next book or two, which the author plans based on her website, it will dig into it more.

Looking forward to the next!

I was a little disappointed with this book. The first in the series was so good that I had high hopes for this one as well. Unfortunately is fell completely flat in so many areas. The relationship or lack there of between Bryce and Luc is based solely on them being mates and that's it.

I didn't feel any connection what-so-ever between the characters and really could care less if they stayed together. Luc is an asshole of the highest, and Bryce is made out to be a whiney, stalker, mess of a character in this book. The ending of this book is just crap too!

This is a definite read from the beginning series. I will continue reading the series, and hope that the author takes more time and care with the rest of them.

NTS: Bought this off of publisher site.

Bryce deserved to suffer and Luc forgave him too soon.

This ended too soon and the 3rd hasn't even been started :(

Let's just say I don't like Luc together with Bryce. He is together with Bryce just because he is Bryce's mate and what's up with the I'm not gay thinghy? i just do not like this story at all.

This is the same trite trope of . Fortunately, I love that trope. But somehow I just wasn't feeling the relationship, especially Alec's attraction. Maybe he protested too much during the story or just thought about how much he couldn't get Bryce out of his mind and not enough about what attracted him about Bryce.

I did love that the older powerful vampire is the smaller subservient-in-sex one. It always bothers me when vampires who are hundreds of years old are still taller than everyone else when back then people were much shorter. If I ever write a vampire books, I'm going to make the bloodsucker a twink.

Anyway, I hated the ending. It really was and that just doesn't work for me with fated mates. I think the human was basically an asshole. But what's really annoying is that the mystery is a story arc that hasn't been completed but there isn't another book in the series, and this was written in 2013, there isn't likely to be one.

At first it seemed that this volume would turn out much better than the initial one. It wasn’t, but for mostly different reasons. What ruined this one for me (ignoring the still awkward and unpolished writing) were the characters and the unsatisfying ending.

More than anything else, there’s Luc, even in his opening scene.
Yeah, go for a run – alone, in the dark, with loud music in your earphones to cover every other sound. I used to be that stupid, too. Granted, I am not a big, bulky muscle-bound man, so I guess Luc’s still less stupid than I am.
In contrast to me, though, he’s a brute, a bully and a user.

So yes, quite obviously I did not like him from the start, but to drive drunk just because he feels frustrated and can’t bring himself to care is low. It’s one thing to have no regard for his own life, but to endanger others because he feels meh? Not cool. Since this is fiction it almost made me want to see him crash into a car and live for the rest of his days with having murdered a family.

However, Bryce, although “softer” and nicer on the whole, does come with his issues as well.
This is really kinda stupid. I can so feel the caring here.
Blah, that entire scene irks me. “He would miss his friend.” No, Bryce, you won’t – because you will be dead. Your friend will maybe be missing you, but certainly not the other way around. Jeez, this guy’s self-centered attitude annoys me.

When we get to the end, things just kind of, well, end.

Well, at least the plot really was about vampires this time. In the first volume they could have been anything else for as much as it mattered to the story.

The saddest thing is that I am now overcome by an irrational urge to read more by this author. Why?

Review written for MM Good Book Reviews

This story is part of a series and is best read in order Bryce is surprised when he is arrested by his mate, his decidedly straight acting mate but he doesn’t let that get to him and decides that he will stalk the man. Lucas can’t get the vampire out of his head especially seeing as he sees him everywhere he goes, he decides to confront the sexy vampire and his actions cause problems for Bryce. Lucas has to get his head around his attraction to the man before it is too late.

This was an interesting paranormal story but I found it hard to believe the romance. Lucas was attacked by a rogue vampire and now months later there are more and more deadly rogue vampire attacks, him and his work partner are tasked with finding out where the rogues are coming from and stopping the problem. Bryce is trying to stop a fight in his club when he is arrested, he knows instantly that the cop is his mate and is disappointed that the guy is ignoring him. Lucas has a hard time fighting his attraction to the male vampire and he is confused by his feelings, he isn’t gay. Bryce is happy as he claims his mate but devastated when he is then rejected, Merrick has to interfere to get the two men together before the worse happens.

I liked the paranormal aspects of this story and was pleased to discover more about the rogues in the city. Bryce and Lucas’ relationship isn’t easy and I like the way that Lucas didn’t fall at Bryce’s feet, Bryce’s stalking was a little creepy and I was disappointed that neither character tried to get to know the other until it was nearly too late. I found it really hard to accept the relationship, Bryce never approached Lucas to try and win him over and Lucas would never have approached Bryce the second time without Merrick’s encouragement. I found it really hard to believe that Bryce just gave up and was willing to die and wouldn’t have even told Lucas it would have caused Lucas’ death as well, it was just wrong. So was Lucas’ abrupt turnaround, he was so deep in denial and then suddenly he was all over Bryce, it just didn’t fit.

I will recommend this to those who love vampires, paranormal, rogues, hot sex and a happy ending.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

The Hot Encounters stories are starting to feel a little like a serial, short in length, a mysterious foe, likable protagonists, and best of all, easy and fun to read.

I can’t say that the characters, Bryce and Lucas, or even Merrick from Frankie’s Vamp were the most complex, but that did not take away from the story and it is my hope that as the series continues, we will get to know the various men better, because to be honest, I was not feeling Bryce’s character. When we met Bryce, he was the capable second-in-command of the Perth coven and yet add a little Luc and he becomes a pushover bottom with a serious lack of backbone. Lucas was a bit more realistic to me, the total Alpha cop. Yes he too was on the two-dimensional side, but it worked for his character.

On the side of things that made me wonder was that Luc seems a little too knowledgable about the location and effect of the prostate during sex, which did not feel quite right. In fact, Luc’s acceptance of Bryce as his mate was a bit rushed, especially since Luc maintained that he was straight though the entire story. Also, I found a couple of instances where the same or similar descriptions of some parts of them having sex were repeated.

I have been a fan of Griffin’s for years and look forward to seeing where the men of Hot Encounters end up and if they can figure out who Weston, creator of the rogue vampires, is and how to stop him.

In a modern day world where paranormals have come out, Bryce a high ranking vampire is arrested by Luc, a human cop, after a fight in a nightclub.
Unbeknownst to Luc, he is Bryce's mate. Only trouble is , Luc is not gay.
Naturally, Bryce sets out to claim Luc.
I love vampire stories and this one was no different.
The cops are hunting rogue vampires and now that they knew who is making them, the mystery continues to the third book in the series.
A nice way to pass an hour.

While not as good as the first one, still not a bad story. I didn't like when stories end like that. Hopefully the author will continue.
