Dear Readers,

The love stories in my family have always been fodder for romance novels.

My maternal grandmother and grandfather simultaneously ran a business together and raised four daughters, long before it was an accepted thing to do.  Grandpa O’Dell ran the gas station and the barber shop; Grandma O’Dell managed the grocery and cooked for customers.  They were true partners and madly in love and parted, tragically, way too soon when he succumbed to cancer when he was in his early fifties.  Grandma grieved deeply but eventually picked herself up, started a new career as a cafeteria chef, and eventually found deep romantic love and happiness again, in the form of a second marriage.

"Mommy!" All three heads popped out. "Aunt Violet's got a prince sleeping in her bed!"

It wasn't the first time he had been called a prince, Gavin thought as he struggled to blink himself awake. However, it was the first time he had been designated one in quite that way.
pg. 79

I wasn't sure what to expect from this baby-centered and doctor-centered book. I'm not a huge fan of romance novels that focus on babies, nor romance novels that focus on doctors. I don't find doctors attractive, dating a doctor holds no appeal to me.

Violet and Gavin are both doctors. Gavin has been angling to date Violet for years, but she never quite got over losing her fiancé to cancer. When a baby is arbitrarily left to these two unmarried doctors, they come closer together while caring for the infant.

The premise is ridiculous - I'm no expert on adoption law, okay, but can you just leave your baby to two people you barely know, who are not together as a couple, because 'you like them?' I'm not sure this would fly. The dying woman had both Gavin and Violet as doctors, and leaves her baby to them to raise. BIZARRE. Violet and Gavin don't want the child to end up in foster care, so they agree to take care of her until a suitable adoptive family can be found. Of course, being a Harlequin American Romance, you can guess what happens at the end of the book.

Violet's parents are unusually involved her her romantic life, which annoyed me. I kept expecting her to tell them to butt out. It's absolutely none of their business whom she is fucking, whom she is falling in love with, and the idea of them telling her to stay away from Gavin, and her father 'having a talk' with Gavin because he suspects his daughter and Gavin might be involved is HIGHLY INSULTING. She's a grown-ass woman in her thirties, who is an oncologist. I kept waiting for her to tell them to mind their own fucking business. I couldn't understand why she didn't lose it with their interference and nosiness. I respect having a close relationship with your parents, but there should be boundaries.

Also, there's nothing 'bad' or 'threatening' about Gavin. He's a perfectly nice guy, a fellow physician, respectable, not a bad-boy of any type. I was confused as to what their concerns were, exactly, regarding him dating their daughter. Most parents would be thrilled.

The book is fine. It's enjoyable. The only bad things I would say about it are that it's baby-focused (not everyone's cup of tea) and that Gillen Thacker's writing can be a bit cheesy at times. I don't mind it, especially since she excels in other areas, but the cheesiness might annoy some people.

HOW'S THE SEX, CARMEN?

Well. Imagine my shock when Gavin convinces Violet to have sex with him and the first thing he decides to do is get on his knees and eat her vulva. Then he proceeds to turn in what counts as an incredibly impressive performance for a Harlequin American Romance novel. I was happily stunned.

Even more stunned when the sex scenes in the book just kept on coming and coming and coming. "Wow, this book has a lot of sex scenes for a HAR," I was thinking. "And Gavin seems surprisingly skilled and competent in bed for a HAR hero." Then I flipped the book over and looked at the author. It was Cathy Gillen Thacker. Everything began to make sense.

"Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh, this book is by CATHY GILLEN THACKER," I thought to myself. "No wonder the sex is so surprisingly good in here." Say what you want about Gillen Thacker, but she goes above and beyond in the sex scenes she turns in to Harlequin. You may think all other HAR authors are half-assing it after you've read her. You may think Harlequin has strict rules about how vague and bland sex scenes have to be in American Romances until you read her. And then you just lose respect for other HAR authors, because if Gillen Thacker can bring it, why can't they?!? If you want to read Harlequins that center on Family, Babies, Home, and Hearth but still believe in good fucking, Gillen Thacker is really your only bet in this Harlequin line. Nothing else will even interest you, I can't tell you how bland and vague these scenes usually are and how disappointing the heroes usually are in bed. Not like this is EROTICA or something that's going to blow you out of the water, but compared to other HAR authors Gillen Thacker is a head-and-shoulders above the rest.

He's also diligent about condom use, extra points.

TL;DR This wouldn't be as good if Gillen Thacker hadn't penned it, her sex scenes kick things up a notch. The appeal of Gavin is definitely increased by his bedroom skillz. Perhaps she should get her parents to back off by telling them Gavin is great in bed. Although he's perfectly fine even outside that, I found him patient, generally sweet, and he had a good head on his shoulders. Nothing objectionable. The storyline is predictable and not terribly exciting, but it's fine. Very baby-focused, so if babymania is not your thing, avoid this. Ava is not overly cutesy IMO but she is a HUGE part of this novel. There's also that weird thing I find gross where the heroine often fantasizes about the hero holding her and touching her like he does the baby. I think this is supposed to be sweet - it's featured in a lot of HARs - but I find it creepy. Babies and women are not the same thing and I would HOPE you don't want your man treating you like he does his baby. o.O Supposed to be touching, I find it revolting. But oh well.

Sweet story. After the death of a former patient, Gavin and Violet find themselves named as foster parents for a newborn baby girl. They've been coworkers and friends for awhile, but this is something entirely different. The question is whether they can co-parent the baby without getting emotionally involved with her or each other. Violet is certain they can, Gavin is not so sure.

Violet came home to Laramie to work in the hospital there, after she lost her fiance to cancer. She's put her heart and soul into her work and avoided any kind of personal relationships until little Ava worked her way past Violet's walls and into her heart. Added to the attraction she feels for Gavin, Violet's life has gotten very complicated. She started out convinced that the best thing for Ava was to find the perfect set of adoptive parents for her, but was soon dreaming of making Ava her own. Having a pseudo-family with the three of them has her wishing it could be real.

Gavin came home to work in the hospital in order to be closer to his family. He's carrying some guilty feelings over not having been there enough after their parents were killed just as he was starting medical school. Being named as guardian for Ava just reinforces his fears that he doesn't have what it takes to be emotionally responsible for another human being. He's determined to keep things practical while they search for the perfect family for Ava. He doesn't count on falling for the little girl himself.

I loved seeing the connection between Gavin and Violet and how it grew. Gavin had been attracted to Violet for awhile, but saw that her grief for her fiance wasn't letting her move on. Being forced into close proximity with her gave him the chance to show her what she was missing. Unknown to him, Violet had finally reached the point where she was ready to move on. Her attraction to Gavin gives her the perfect stepping off point. They first agree that they will have a "fling" for as long as they are caring for Ava, but soon realize that they don't really want it to end. I loved seeing how quickly they became a family. Ava has brought them together and shown them how much love they have to give, both her and each other, but they have to be willing to accept it.

But they have a big obstacle between them to overcome. Violet is ready to open her heart and take a risk again, to keep Ava and raise her, even without Gavin by her side. Gavin refuses to believe that he has what it takes to give Ava everything she needs and insists that giving her up is the best thing to do. I loved seeing Violet stand up for what she wants and what she needs from Gavin, finally putting her past behind her. Gavin takes a bit longer and it takes a pretty straight conversation with his younger brother to show him the truth. His actions at the end are quite romantic and sweet for a guy who considers himself pragmatic. The epilogue was a nice glimpse at their future.

I liked the inclusion of the issues Gavin and his family were having with his younger brother Nicholas. It was a good way to show the effect of his parents' deaths on all of them, and how each dealt with it. Nicholas's actions showcased the changes that Gavin was going through thanks to Violet's influence. My only problem with the story was with Violet's parents. In each book of this series I have been very disappointed in their attitudes towards their daughters. They always seem to have poor opinions of the girls' abilities to make the right decisions regarding their relationships. I also felt that Violet's father crossed a line when he talked to Gavin, since he is also Gavin's boss. I know it works out in the end, but I'd rather see them supporting from the beginning.

Cathy Gillen Thacker has written an alluring story that is emotional and sweet. Lone Star Baby is the story of two doctors that are faced with the surprising task of becoming the guardians of an orphaned newborn. What I liked about the story is that Baby Ava's arrival caused Violet and Gavin to take hard looks at their life and examine choices they had made and events experienced. Maybe life has a bigger plan for the both of them. Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Liked the story but it was lacking something. Did not enjoy it as much as her previous novels.

A baby can change so many things even when that maybe will end up with a forever family.

This was a very sweet story that made me smile throughout this read. The story focuses on two doctors that start a relationship in a very uncommon way but knew that it was only a matter of time before they would fall in love. They knew each other when they were younger and they went to different medical schools but now there are working at the same hospital.

Violet McCabe and Gavin Monroe both have tragic pasts and they both have built walls around their hearts. Gavin had gone out with woman and had been in relationships before but for one reason or another the relationships never went anywhere. Now as for Violet she was busy with her patients and trying not to get too attached to them. That is something that is hard on every doctor especially when living in a small town where everyone knows everyone. She is ready to move to another city and start living life. But then they both receive a visit from a social worker and showed them a video of a woman asking both of them to take care of her little Ava. She was born premature but also gave them an out if they couldn’t adopt Ava they could find a family that had a large family to adopt her. Her parents know that it’s a bad idea for them to live together and take care of this little adorable little girl because she was going to get attached to her but also maybe she and Gavin would start a fling. No matter what her parents tell her she ends up moving into Gavin’s home and they look after Ava. They both fall in love with her but they know it’s only temporary or is it.

Lone Star Baby was a sweet quick read that I enjoyed. I loved the storyline and how the characters developed a relationship. Gavin was a man that had a big heart but he needed to deal with the guilt he was feeling. Violet was a woman that knew what she wanted well that was at least before Ava came into her life. Ava was a beautiful baby that was adored by all the staff in the hospital and especially Gavin and Violet. These two characters are going to struggle with their feelings, they are going to have to deal with their past and they are going to have to learn how to be parents.

I totally recommend this read!!

Violet and Gavin face a serious question, and situation, that many of us never stop to think about. Upon being trusted as baby girl's guardians, they have to make a decision, what is best for the baby, putting their own feelings and budding romance on the side.
While I was reading this story, and experiencing the struggle Gavin and Violet went through with the decision, I had to stop and wonder what would I do in that situation. Would I be able to think only the best of the baby, put my own feelings aside, and make a rational decision? And for a book to make me wonder and ponder that kind of serious questions, it has already achieved something.
The story is different kind of romance, it is missing the high emotions of falling in love often demonstrated. Yes, Gavin and Violet do fall in love, there's heat, hot passion, and attraction. But the main focus is on the matter of the new parenthood, and what is best for Ava. The struggle they go through, the past failures and their own doubts of their ability to parent, be a parent, and be in a lasting relationship, not hurting the other, all the things they muddle through, to come to the conclusion.
I liked how the author took a look of life decisions from the two points of view, we usually make them, either based on emotions or rational thinking. It is hard to separate our feelings from matters that are so heavily based on emotions. As the story demonstrates, maybe the best conclusions come, when looking at the issues from both sides of the fence.

When a patient of Violet and Gavin's pass away they had given the two doctors custody of the child until they want the child themselves or can find a parents to adopt the child. They already have that attraction and playing house with the child isn't helping. As soon as they can get the child adopted they can go back to their lives.

I thought that this was a sweet book. I loved watching the connection between the two. I enjoyed seeing how they worked as a family. Although the tension between whether or not they would keep the baby and if they were going to be together or if Violet was going to transfer. I just wished there was much more to the book then what was happening. I was hoping for more drama. That could just be that recently I've been reading books with loads of drama and suspense that this book just didn't do it for me. But if you as a reader do enjoy a good sweet story with a orphaned premie baby in the mix then this book just might be the one you are looking for.

Doctor Violet McCabe and Doctor Gavin Monroe are capable, committed professionals, both of whom have experienced heavy personal losses. When a former patient dies leaving them co-guardians of her new-born daughter, a premmie, neither is prepared to adopt the baby. They agree, however, to follow the mother’s second choice: they will care for baby Ava until they can find the perfect family for her, and then they will keep watch over her as godparents. But they fail to take into account their vulnerable hearts which have them falling in love with the baby and with each other.

Sometimes a short, sweet read is just what I need, but I don’t want a simplistic, saccharine story. At such times, Cathy Gillen Thacker is an author I count on to offer an easy read that genuinely tugs at my heartstrings and provides engaging, believable characters. She does it again with Lone Star Baby.
