One Year Wiser is a book of 365 inspiring meditations. On every page are words of wisdom from thinkers both ancient and modern, from the Buddha to Abraham Lincoln to Anne Frank. Drawn in an accessible, contemporary style, One Year Wiser provides a visual guide to the spiritual teachings of thinkers as diverse as the Dalai Lama, Virginia Woolf, Albert Einstein, Seneca, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Marcus Aurelius, and Mark Twain.
Fantastic book! One or two sentence for each day of the year combined with great colorful, fun illustrations, very quick and just enough to ground you for the day :) I never looked ahead because I always looked forward to reading the short piece each day. I like it so much I've given two as gifts and I'm now going through each day again!
This is the first book to break down mindfulness / gratitude / meditation into chunks that make sense. Loved it so much I bought it (initially read it via my library) and the comparison gratitude journal.
Art is whimsical and thoughtful to companion the writing.
This was fun, if rather a quick read. The book is a series of single page illustrations of ... I guess "inspirational quotes" isn't really the proper term since that implies something more mindless and treacle-y than these seem to be. They're quotes and wise sayings, and they may possibly inspire you. Some may be familiar, but, if you're anything like me, most probably won't. Ideally, this is not a book to be read straight through. The reader is supposed to ponder one page a day, preferably as part of a meditation practice. In fact, this book would almost work better as a page-a-day calendar. Or perhaps it could have been a deck of 365 cards. You contemplate a question, then draw a random quote and see how it might apply. In any case, I don't possess the self control to stick to one page per day, though I did pause and reflect quite a bit, keeping to the book's spirit as best I could. Medaglia does a nice job of using creative calligraphy and drawings to illustrate each quote. Some are abstract and some more concrete. One page in particular showed a very strong anime influence, a face that bore a more than passing resemblance to Astro Boy, appropriate since the quote on the page was from Osamu Tezuka, Astro Boy's creator. All in all, this was an enjoyable book, perfect for spiritual seekers of all ages.
Less ornate designs than many "too busy" adult coloring books. Short maxims that pair well with the designs. I have used this book in counseling to help teens express their feelings about life and death after the loss of a loved one.
