Masamune Shirow is an internationally renowned manga
Masanori Ota, better known by his pen name Masamune Shirow (Japanese: 士郎正宗), is a Japanese manga artist renowned for his influential contributions to the cyberpunk genre. Born in Kobe in 1961, he studied oil painting at Osaka University of Arts, where he developed an interest in manga. His early work Black Magic led to the critically acclaimed Appleseed, which won the 1986 Seiun Award for Best Manga. Shirow achieved global recognition with Ghost in the Shell, a groundbreaking manga that inspired multiple anime films and series, a live-action Hollywood adaptation, and numerous video games. His stories are known for blending action with philosophical inquiries into AI, post-human existence, and the ethics of technology. He has collaborated with Production I.G on projects like Ghost Hound and Real Drive. Shirow’s distinctive style and thought-provoking narratives have left a lasting impact on manga, anime, and science fiction worldwide, influencing creators including the Wachowskis of The Matrix fame.
I have found that reading the letter by Shirow Masamune at the end of each book really clears up any issues I have.
This is the best book in the manga series so far. I love the Terminator references in the big fight scene. I love that we get some insight into Nene’s feelings.
This series is only rated Teen and although there are some ecchi scenes such as when Nene requires access to the Pandora Device nothing truly bad comes out of it but use your best judgment before handing this book off to a younger viewer. Also as I like to mention this is a collaborative manga from the creator of Ghost in the Shell and Excel Saga (has that kind of story feel too) so if cybernetics themes bother you then you should avoid this series as well.
Okay with the disclaimer out of the way I want to say in my opinion that this was not one of the better books in the series. I mean sure we get to see a lot of adorable Nene and get the warm feelings as she does her best to save the world one person at a time but this volume has precious little of that as danger comes from down below. Now Clarion must do whatever it takes to save Nene and others from the potential threat of Buer reactivating in berserker mode once more (Even though the core has been hanging out with Nene and Clarion.) However she can not go it alone with the American Imperial Army at the ready to protect their expedition into Uzal's underground lab.
It is nice that we get a chance to see more then just a quick glimpse Kurtz's plans in action and get to see Clarion kicking butts efficiently but I am looking forward to seeing Nene return to her happy little world with Clarion at her side. At least I hope that is going to happen since the back of the book claims "But the Pandora Device is only effective as its users' teamwork, and their relationship is on the verge of changing..." so we'll have to see how the dynamic of the series might change in the future. Hopefully it doesn't get to serious.
If I had to choose a favorite part it is when Clarion is infiltrating the American Imperial operations and one of the soldiers swore he saw a young girl with cat ears and a maid uniform and all the other soldiers don't believe him till she gets closer. See and you will believe. :)
