The Band of the Hawks’ rescue of their leader, Griffith, has brought them no ease. Broken beyond healing, a frail ghost of his former glory, Griffith is now more an object of pity than a man, and the Hawks, who’ve grimly hung together under duress and death during his absence, are now on the verge of splintering to the winds. But Griffith’s dreams and ambitions, built on the bodies of his troops and the countless enemies they have slain, have not gone unnoticed in the spirit realm, and though Griffith has nowhere to go as a man, he may yet have a future . . . a future borne on jet-black wings in the company of the demon lords of the Godhand!

Kentarou Miura (三浦建太郎) was born in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, in 1966. He is left-handed. In 1976, at the early age of 10, Miura made his first Manga, entitled "Miuranger", that was published for his classmates in a school publication; the manga ended up spanning 40 volumes. In 1977, Miura created his second manga called Ken e no michi (剣への道 The Way to the Sword), using Indian ink for the first time. When he was in middle school in 1979, Miura's drawing techniques improved greatly as he started using professional drawing techniques. His first dōjinshi was published, with the help of friends, in a magazine in 1982.

That same year, in 1982, Miura enrolled in an artistic curriculum in high school, where he and his classmates started publishing their works in school booklets, as well as having his first dōjinshi published in a fan-produced magazine. In 1985, Miura applied for the entrance examination of an art college in Nihon University. He submitted Futanabi for examination and was granted admission. This project was later nominated Best New Author work in Weekly Shōnen Magazine. Another Miura manga Noa was published in Weekly Shōnen Magazine the very same year. Due to a disagreement with one of the editors, the manga was stalled and eventually dropped altogether. This is approximately where Miura's career hit a slump.

In 1988, Miura bounced back with a 48-page manga known as Berserk Prototype, as an introduction to the current Berserk fantasy world. It went on to win Miura a prize from the Comi Manga School. In 1989, after receiving a doctorate degree, Kentarou started a project titled King of Wolves (王狼, ōrō?) based on a script by Buronson, writer of Hokuto no Ken. It was published in the monthly Japanese Animal House magazine in issues 5 and 7 of that year.

In 1990, a sequel is made to Ourou entitled Ourou Den (王狼伝 ōrō den, The Legend of the Wolf King) that was published as a prequel to the original in Young Animal Magazine. In the same year, the 10th issue of Animal House witnesses the first volume of the solo project Berserk was released with a relatively limited success. Miura again collaborated with Buronson on manga titled Japan, that was published in Young Animal House from the 1st issue to the 8th of 1992, and was later released as a stand-alone tankōbon. Miura's fame grew after Berserk was serialized in Young Animal in 1992 with the release of "The Golden Age" story arc and the huge success of his masterpiece made of him one of the most prominent contemporary mangakas. At this time Miura dedicates himself solely to be working on Berserk. He has indicated, however, that he intends to publish more manga in the future.

In 1997, Miura supervised the production of 25 anime episodes of Berserk that aired in the same year on NTV. Various art books and supplemental materials by Miura based on Berserk are also released. In 1999, Miura made minor contributions to the Dreamcast video game Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage. 2004 saw the release of yet another video game adaptation entitled Berserk Millennium Falcon Arc: Chapter of the Record of the Holy Demon War.

Since that time, the Berserk manga has spanned 34 tankōbon with no end in sight. The series has also spawned a whole host of merchandise, both official and fan-made, ranging from statues, action figures to key rings, video games, and a trading card game. In 2002, Kentarou Miura received the second place in the Osamu Tezuka Culture Award of Excellence for Berserk.[1]

Miura provided the design for the Vocaloid Kamui Gakupo, whose voice is taken from the Japanese singer and actor, Gackt.

Miura passed away on May 6, 2021 at 2:48 p.m. due to acute aortic dissection.

It is official ladies and gentlemen, Griffith is the villain.
The son of a bitch have done it, he sacrificed all his friends, comrades, and followers to become a bloody cold hearted demon!!!
And let's be realistic for a second here, whatever state Griffith ended up in after being tortured for one year, wasn't because of Guts, It was because he didn't consider anyone his friend, he obviously set his friendship goals, and Guts didn't make the cut even though he wanted to be his friend.
I mean... he might have considered him a friend from the beginning, but friendship is something you have to face yourself, and others with, If you have a friend, and have been hurt by "friends" before, or you are afraid that this friendship might drag you down, You either admit it or you forget it altogether. Griffith didn't do any of the two options here, and he lived in denial.
This is about 1/3 way into the story now, and I will eagerly wait to see the day, where Guts will shove his big ass sword into Griffith's heart...

This volume basically solidified Berserk as the greatest horror story I’ve ever read. I could sit here and point out the problematic areas, but imo they’re overshadowed by the absolutely genius story telling and stunning art work

Griffith, the once venerable leader of the Band of the Hawks, is now a frail, shadow of his former self. He is offered a second chance at glory, as a Demon Lord, in exchange for the lives of his beloved Hawks. Of course, since he shows up in the earlier volumes as a demon lord, we all know that he accepts the deal - what we don't know is who, besides Guts, will survive the ordeal.

Once again, another fine entry to the Berserk saga, and a VERY quick read. Griffith is a very interesting hero-turned-villain, and his decision to sacrifice his soldiers in exchange for power, while predictable, is still shocking. I look forward to seeing the aftermath of this!

Here's another bit that might have been better without the first few volumes and Griffith's introduction as a demon, or might not have been. I wouldn't know. It was already a foregone conclusion, what happens here, but does it make any of this any less shocking? Any less of one of the worst and most harrowing scenes ever put on paper? Probably not.

Everyone's fucked. In some cases, literally.

And the worst thing is, if I were put in Griffith's place, I probably would have done the same thing. He went through a lot of shit to come down to this bit. Likely by design.

You ever notice that every time someone makes a sacrifice and turns themselves into an Apostle, their supposed loved ones had just done some really bad shit at them? The Count found his wife in the middle of a Satanic ritual, all but gloating at him for being unable to kill her. Rosine's dad beat the tar out of her and then brought their petty human arguments to the supposedly-sacred realm of the faerie. Emperor Ganishka's son tried to assassinate him. And here, Griffith had been brought down into his single lowest point, and the two he loves in this world the most - Guts and Casca - are treating him with pity and thinking of leaving him. The one time someone rejected the bargain was when their loved one had done nothing at all: Count's daughter was a sweet pure cinnamon roll and had not hurt him at the time. It makes you think, doesn't it.

I also like the cliffhanger at the end of this volume. Even as the entire cast is thrust into the maws of hell, it manages to leave open a small glimmer of hope: none of the named characters have died yet. And we know for a fact that Guts, somehow, makes it out of this alive. So maybe...?

Here we finally get to see how Guts ended up on the position he's in in the very first volume of Berserk. We've come nearly full circle. The Eclipse comes in and the demon lords of the Godhand give Griffith and ultimatum that will allow him to have all the power he's been wanting.

Super fun story. Horrific and a tad scary too. The artwork is wonderful.

How to describe this volume in one word?

Despair.

This volume put me through an emotion of rollercoaster, and by the likes of how this ended, the worse is yet to come.

Wonderfully unpredictable and tragic, Kentaro Miura’s fantasy epic continues to not disappoint as it reaches sprawling new emotional heights in this volume. As Berserk fans know all too well, this volume is the beginning of the bizarre, dark, and unrelentingly horrifying “eclipse”.

10/10 stars

A fabulous climax to the entire story so far. We knew it couldn't have ended any other way, but man, Miura achieves a peak of his gloriously gory, operatic tragedy here. The imagery is stunning, reminiscent of Bosch and Escher mixed into one unholy whole, with a sprinkle of Giger on top. Very archetypal, filled with primal fears of being devoured and losing one's identity. Creepy as hell, too, all that pulsating, slick, amorphous mass of mindless hunger.

There is an epic breadth here that puts the intimate stories of Guts, Casca, and their comrades in stark relief: the fate of an individual seems almost insignificant in comparison with the cataclysmic genocide brought about by Griffith - and yet, it is what gives the entire arc its undeniable emotional weight.

Griffith, I hope you'll get what you deserve.

Okay so before we begin, I saw SHAZAM this past weekend (amazing film BTW) and the similarities between despite being very different stories with very different tones... it’s uncanny. Can anyone else see that?

What’s it about?
Too many spoilers to go into that, skip.

Why it gets 5 stars:
The story is still very interesting. This volume moved the story along more than I expected it to and damn, this story is going some crazy places. It’s so good!
The characters are very interesting and well written. Guts and Casca are both troubled and flawed yet bad-ass and heroic at the same time, I really like that. Griffith is interesting
The artwork is fantastic. I know I keep saying these 2 things about the art in this series but they’re still applicable even after 12 volumes: it’s the best art I’ve seen in a manga series (some of the best art in any comics in fact) and it gets even better in every volume!
This is so damn intense! At first I was actually a bit like “This volume is interesting but a tad slow” for a few chapters but after those few chapters shit gets real and the final half or so of this volume is some of the most intense stuff in the series so far. In the wise words of Papa Franku “Shit just went from 0 to 100 real fuckin’ quick!”, that describes this volume.
This series is pretty unpredictable and this volume is very twisty.
There are a few brief comic relief moments that work despite the dark tone.
The horror stuff is very well done. This volume heavily involves some demon characters and the designs are sick! There’s this guy that... I honestly don’t even know how to describe this.
description
Oh and one that looks kinda like if Stephen King designed MODOK, love that design!
description
And last but not least, there’s one that takes a form of naked giantess with these big bat-wings around her that look freaking awesome. While sort of an excuse for gratuitous nudity the design is fucking sweet and it doesn’t shove “LOOK AT HER BOOBIES!” into almost every panel or anything like that so I’ll give it a pass (unfortunately can’t show the character but can show what my brain would be thinking if something that looked like that were to show up near me).
description
(Note: even if pretty, giant demons are not good girlfriends, not just because they’re evil but could you imagine what kind of STDs might come from Hell? That risk is not worth taking! (Giant angels are probably okay though IDK for sure))
This series in general manages to, despite being an action packed mix of dark fantasy and twisted horror, be very emotional. This volume is possibly the most emotional one yet.
This book is weird as fuck. It may be the weirdest thing I’ve ever read but it still makes sense so I enjoyed it’s weirdness.
The ending. Damn, what a cliffhanger... I noticed I actually ended up yelling “NO!” seeing that it was the end of the volume.

Overall:
What can I say?
This volume is another masterpiece in storytelling. This is a review for volume 12 and I haven’t said “going downhill” yet. It’s an amazing story with great characters, tons of action, insane horror and A+ writing.
I know some people think of this as that weird manga with the shit-ton of gore, rape and nudity. While it is weird and certainly has tons of that graphic content, it’s all in context inside an epic tale set in a world of darkness and tragedy. I cannot recommend this series enough. 12th volume in and it’s still a strong title, I’m definitely a fan!

Hécatombe

'Regarde donc.

Golden Age Arc #10.

it's all very nightmarish as Griffith has made his choice...now becoming interested in Casca...before despite how devoted she was to him ...she proved no challenge.
However now shes with Guts...but that won't stop Griffith.

This is the big start of the eclipse.

Griffiths ambition comes to a head as he’s lost everything. Guts continues through his miserable life and Casca comes to grips with everything that has happened.

I won’t say much else but if you’ve gotten this far in the series this is not the volume to stop. In a sense this is what it’s all been building towards. All the pieces have been laid. It’s time to knock em down.

Art is great writing gains another depth.

I always go faster with comic books lol

Many people recommended this series to me, but I am very disappointed after I have read 33 books of the series. I could read them all night without falling asleep, so yeah, I can tell it’s a fun story, I mean "entertaining-wise." But what’s the message; we all should live without great dreams?

Did the author believe that it was possible for him to have completed this work both in comic books and animation films without modern technology? Was that possible for us to enjoy our modern technology without our Human progress? Was any of our Human progress and great achievements really possible if we Humans didn’t build societies united under each one direction, some call unified "empires", by force or not, with all our strength gathered together to build the ancient Pyramids of Egypt, huge apartment complexes or Great Forum of Rome or the Great Wall of China, which had seemed impossible? Do we really wanna believe that our way of life we are so used to today would be even possible if those prominent leaders in history didn’t unite tribes to build unified nations? Do we have to go back to our old, family-based tribal societies and just don’t try anything beyond our tribal capabilities not to sacrifice any one? Says him who can’t live without playing digital games or watching animés like this one every day on his smart phone screen.

A “Progressive” doesn't mean a person with empty words or thoughts, but with challenge, tear, sweat, blood and sacrifice. If he claims to be a “Progressive”, but he uses words like “warmonger” or “bourgeoisie” in order to attack others who try harder than him for their dreams, it is more like he simply wishes to avoid hard challenges to contribute to our Human progress, while he still wants the fruits thanks to those sacrificed. That’s the real truth among us that this popular series is not telling us.

If he wants to call another person’s dream “greed”, then we are all greedy. But even greed’s got two different kinds. One sort of greed we’ve just talked about. The other kind? What was so great about Roman Empire someone asked me; actually there's been several people who gave me the same question, but this particular moment I remember the most 'cause he said that in a large, indoor concert hall. He should’ve first thought about how our world today knows so much about building great structures so he oftentimes can go enjoy music he loves so much before bitching about the slavery of the ancient empire. Maybe that...that ancient social system, or anything like that, was built upon the other kind of greed, thus the two different sorts of greed.

Some people with certain kinda special greed drop tears watching this simple ad by accident, because these people do not have time to enjoy this luxury in real life busy thinking of a big picture for the people, many, many people...

No Human progress would've been possible without good leaders making tough decisions to lead his or her "group" to the right direction, for the group, and the author clearly talked and even emphasized the fact in the story too! Why the self-contradiction?

This series delivers a wrong message, which might even cripple our own future. I’ve never been this unhappy reading a story except SONG Hongbing's Currency War.

But the author’s imagination was so realistic, especially the horrible scene, with the suffering people’s bloody head after head covering the entire surroundings of the event making everything red, was the exact fear the people in older times felt when they saw piles of severed heads slain by invaders or their masters, best described in various records of the Mongol invasion, not that the Mongols were the only conquerors who used fear in people’s mind’/ ment’ality though, but they simply caused on their way of world conquest the worst and biggest fear in the whole known world at the time.

For his realistic imagination and professional work as a cartoonist, I leave one more star in respect for his skill and devotion.

Here we go; one of the most impactful and iconic moments in the history of manga. Subjectively, of course, I would argue in the history of fiction period.

P.S. Griffith did nothing wrong. (That's a joke, of course. He did everything wrong. But he's also one of the best characters of all time)

This one was quite cool as this pretty much starts off with Griffith hearing why Guts left and his plans when he is talking with Casca, so Griffith runs off in that weakened state and he sees the Behelit and summons the demons of the Godhand and all and everyone while approaching are shocked to see what's happening and the art sequence that follows is insane, so well drawn and we see everything that's cool there and the whole thing as it goes from dark to even further dark and the 4 members and they offer the prophecy and explanation, Griffith buying into that and sacrificing everything in order to achieve his dream, we have a little flashback and all which is cool too and then in the end a big eclipse happening and Guts marked! This volume was insane and changes so many things going forward!

L'arrivo dell'Eclissi
