Warrior supreme Guts, the Black Swordsman, has seen better days — and more popular — in the kingdom of Midland, a land he once defended as captain of the Band of the Hawk. But the Hawks were betrayed and slaughtered, and now the hyolier-than-thou Holy Iron Chain Knights have captured Guts and plan to whip some repentance into him — literally. But Guts isn’t so easily held at bay, at when he manages to escape with the Holy Knights’ leader, Farnese, as his hostage, the demons that are drawn to Guts’ Brand of Sacrifice are all too willing to show her the teeming darkness in her own soul!

Kentarou Miura (三浦建太郎) was born in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, in 1966. He is left-handed. In 1976, at the early age of 10, Miura made his first Manga, entitled "Miuranger", that was published for his classmates in a school publication; the manga ended up spanning 40 volumes. In 1977, Miura created his second manga called Ken e no michi (剣への道 The Way to the Sword), using Indian ink for the first time. When he was in middle school in 1979, Miura's drawing techniques improved greatly as he started using professional drawing techniques. His first dōjinshi was published, with the help of friends, in a magazine in 1982.

That same year, in 1982, Miura enrolled in an artistic curriculum in high school, where he and his classmates started publishing their works in school booklets, as well as having his first dōjinshi published in a fan-produced magazine. In 1985, Miura applied for the entrance examination of an art college in Nihon University. He submitted Futanabi for examination and was granted admission. This project was later nominated Best New Author work in Weekly Shōnen Magazine. Another Miura manga Noa was published in Weekly Shōnen Magazine the very same year. Due to a disagreement with one of the editors, the manga was stalled and eventually dropped altogether. This is approximately where Miura's career hit a slump.

In 1988, Miura bounced back with a 48-page manga known as Berserk Prototype, as an introduction to the current Berserk fantasy world. It went on to win Miura a prize from the Comi Manga School. In 1989, after receiving a doctorate degree, Kentarou started a project titled King of Wolves (王狼, ōrō?) based on a script by Buronson, writer of Hokuto no Ken. It was published in the monthly Japanese Animal House magazine in issues 5 and 7 of that year.

In 1990, a sequel is made to Ourou entitled Ourou Den (王狼伝 ōrō den, The Legend of the Wolf King) that was published as a prequel to the original in Young Animal Magazine. In the same year, the 10th issue of Animal House witnesses the first volume of the solo project Berserk was released with a relatively limited success. Miura again collaborated with Buronson on manga titled Japan, that was published in Young Animal House from the 1st issue to the 8th of 1992, and was later released as a stand-alone tankōbon. Miura's fame grew after Berserk was serialized in Young Animal in 1992 with the release of "The Golden Age" story arc and the huge success of his masterpiece made of him one of the most prominent contemporary mangakas. At this time Miura dedicates himself solely to be working on Berserk. He has indicated, however, that he intends to publish more manga in the future.

In 1997, Miura supervised the production of 25 anime episodes of Berserk that aired in the same year on NTV. Various art books and supplemental materials by Miura based on Berserk are also released. In 1999, Miura made minor contributions to the Dreamcast video game Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage. 2004 saw the release of yet another video game adaptation entitled Berserk Millennium Falcon Arc: Chapter of the Record of the Holy Demon War.

Since that time, the Berserk manga has spanned 34 tankōbon with no end in sight. The series has also spawned a whole host of merchandise, both official and fan-made, ranging from statues, action figures to key rings, video games, and a trading card game. In 2002, Kentarou Miura received the second place in the Osamu Tezuka Culture Award of Excellence for Berserk.[1]

Miura provided the design for the Vocaloid Kamui Gakupo, whose voice is taken from the Japanese singer and actor, Gackt.

Miura passed away on May 6, 2021 at 2:48 p.m. due to acute aortic dissection.

This was by far the most story packed volume.
There was no Big fights at all, And even the small fights weren't many.
This was just about story, and building up the mystery for the next arc.
It seems that the inquisitor is actually another apostle, Not sure about his team of torturers though.
I have my doubts if Casca will survive the next volume, since Guts is supposed to stay with her, if she survives, and this would put everything on halt.
The hawk of light is definitely Griffith, i am not really sure what his plan might be, to come and reclaim Charlotte along with her kingdom, would be rather insignificant since he is a god now, and would mean that this manga should end very early, which will not happen because he would be stationed in one place, and Guts will have to storm it a few times to get him.
Oh man there is so many ways this could go through now, i am done trying to speculate what's next! i will try to read next volume, at the nearest opportunity.

Okay! Now we’re back into 5-star territory.

What’s it about?
There’s been a lot in this series so I’m not gonna try going into all that. I’d probably accidentally spoil stuff. Skip!

Why it gets 5-stars:
The story is very fascinating. A lot of plot development occurs in this volume.
The art, as always in this series, is excellent. There’s some very good, impressive illustrations throughout in this volume.
The characters are well written. One thing I like about this series is how despite being a fantasy story with unrealistic situations throughout, the characters still feel realistic and human.
This volume, while definitely not the most action-packed volume of the series, is still pretty intense nonetheless. While the volume is mostly focused on plot, we still get some action.
Puck provides some comic relief in an otherwise rather bleak tale and it’s actually good. It never feels out of place. Surprisingly, it actually helps the plot and emotional elements.
This comic is not too predictable.
This volume, I don’t wanna say for sure as there’s been a lot of heavy emotional stuff in the series, might be the most emotional volumes of the entire series! Holy shit, this book got me. This book really gets deep into the philosophy and emotions that most revenge action stories don’t get into.
There’s some social commentary about how many religious organizations are actually just greedy and cruel but use faith as an excuse even though that’s against what their G/god(s) would truly want in most cases. I thought it was pretty cool that Miura was able to include commentary about a fucked up reality within a fucked up fictional world.
This volume dropped a “holy shit” worthy ending.

Overall:
I don’t care what the snooters of the world say, comics are literature. Also, Berserk is a literary masterpiece. Give me any reason to believe otherwise. Okay, so art is subjective and everyone sees the same book in different ways but the way I see it, Berserk is a masterpiece!
Not only is it a gritty, gory dark fantasy tale of vengeance but also an emotional story that goes in-depth into interesting, well-written characters.
Highly recommended!

It’s nice to see that the plot is actually going somewhere. Some HEAVY foreshadowing going on. Guts finally set his priorities straight, I’M SO PROUD. Casca! Rickert! Puck! Among the new characters Serpico is the best by far. Farnese character growth (due to some disturbing and triggering events that I wish I could erase from my memory). And, of course, the artwork is in the league of its own 100/10 nothing compares.
I need more!

Oh, in other news Griffith operates through people’s dreams now. He even kicks some hairy ass once and (kinda) starts a new religion all thanks to telepathy. Say what you may, but that guy is a legend.

You really gotta hand it to Guts - beat him halfway into the grave, stick him in a cage, and the next night he's all set for another fight as if none of that had ever happened. There's a suggestion later on in the manga that he too has become something more than mortal, ascended beyond what the rest of us can do, but it already shows here pretty well.

Farnese's character growth gets going in its earnest with the horrifying wakeup call of the night. It's not very subtle, but Berserk is good with that, so that's good. I quickly grew to like her after this, and realize there might be more to her. Some great quick-drawing with Serpico as well: going from zero to hundred with a convenient turn of a page, it's pretty great.

We also get to see what I consider the bridging of the very first books, and the ones seen after the flashback - the acknowledgement of what a dick Guts used to be and adding that to the story, rather than brushing it under the mat and pretending it never existed like lesser stories would do. I quite like that. I wonder if his short fling with that one girl Apostle is a part of it, though. Some say it was to catch her off-guard, others that it was his Beast of Darkness taking over... hard to say.

And then there's this asshole.

Bishop Mozgus, hypocrite supreme and a meme made manifest. I love this guy. I love to hate him and I love to laugh at the faces he makes. A lot of the coming Conviction arc is made by him - all the foreshadowing notwithstanding, in this volume already getting some eerie premonitions about how the main bad guy Griffith might be returning for round two. Many things to look forward to, but also things to do right away in the near future.

This was something, its pretty much just Guts escaping from that lady Farnese after she tortures him, a little tussle here and there and the whole thing that follows his escape is something and then he heads back to the mountain to meet with Casca and others and then reaffirming to find Casca as she has disappeared and his last meeting with some others and then heading his own way, meanwhile some plague has hit Windham and the king passes away while in Holy see, we meet Father Mozgus in the St Albion temple and the execution of those who have rebelled against the priest and why is Casca there? Interesting stuff as we see more of the brutality of this world and the terrors that keep coming! Good stuff!

Volume 17 has art ranging from detailed phenomenal pieces to Puck 's funny basic outline /structure. It's amusing how Miura makes it work so well.

This volume was a rest from the non stop action and violence of previous volumes, as the readers finally get some chance to rest and get to know about the things to come.

You're like a drawn sword on the battlefield. One with countless nicks, soaked in blood and rusting. with a lethal crack in it. A sword that's begun to break.

A good sword... Even if it rusts and dulls... Has good steel that never rusts left over in the wick. That steel's the ultimate steel. Even if it cracks... if you return it to the fire... it's sure to be reborn.

𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟑𝟕 - 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐧

Not Puck blackmailing Guts😂 I love their banter so much and how Guts is starting to engage with Puck more and more!

I kinda want Farnese to be Gut’s friend, I kinda like her.
Also, I wonder why she couldn’t see Puck!. Does that mean she can’t see gods or demons as well? It’s interesting.

𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟑𝟗 - 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠

Wow, so much character growth on Farnese’s part, and in a such a short time! The way her storyline is going is giving me hope that she’ll be a permanent character; I’d love that honestly!
Also, now it makes sense why she couldn’t see Puck.

𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟒𝟎 - 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡

The end of 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐫𝐜: 𝐁𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫
I don’t understand Farnese’s character completely but it’s interesting that what she’s feeling was already there even before she experienced what she experienced with Guts. What she has gone through in this short arc didn’t change her out of nowhere; it just unlocked something in her.

𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟒𝟏 - 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝟏)

This one was full of symbolisms and foreshadowings. If Death is the plague then what is the white hawk? And why a hawk exactly? It makes me think that it refers to the hawk band.

There was a panel in a previous chapter that showed a white bird being sacrificed for a behelit, and now this chapter showed the 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐲 of this hawk; so my theory for now is that the white hawk refers to Casca’s and Guts’s son.

𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟒𝟐 - 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝟐)

In the king’s hallucinations, Griffith is shown as the white hawk … and I’m confused; it really made sense to me that it would refer to Casca’s and Guts’s son :)
How is Griffith is gonna save the kingdom? Or people just assumed that the white hawk is their saviour?

It seems that in berserk’s world the lines are always blurred when it comes to things like this; just like how gods and demons are the same things in this world.

𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟒𝟑 - 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝟑)

“𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙠𝙮 𝙛𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙨 𝙙𝙤𝙬𝙣, 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙮 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙥𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙙𝙨 𝙞𝙩 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙧”

This whole scene with Zodd and the white hawk was interesting. Gut’s son said the same thing the bird said, I’m officially confused :|

𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟒𝟒 - 𝐂𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞

Godu gotta be one of my favourite side characters, I’ll always love a well written wise old man. I agree with every word Godu said to Guts, but I can also see why Guts left Casca two years ago; I think he wanted to protect her from himself mostly.

𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟒𝟓 - 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐞

Rickert is growing on me. I can’t believe he’s still alive somehow; at first glance he looks like the type of character that gets killed off immediately after going through the smallest danger.

Guts’s monologue was so good and I almost cried because I was overwhelmed with emotions over Guts’s life. I think once I finish this manga I’ll reread this volume; it’s full of important symbolisms that I can’t comprehend completely for now; Guts still feels vague to me.

𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟒𝟔 - 𝐓𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐲 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 (𝟏)

“𝙏𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙙𝙞𝙤𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙𝙣’𝙩 𝙗𝙚 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙢𝙚” — Godu

So there’s two hawks :)
there’s the hawk of light which is Griffith, and the hawk of darkness which is Guts.

This is the 17th volume in the Berserk series and continues the story started at the end of Vol 16. I loved how much progress the story made in this volume and thought it was a very strong installment in this series.

Guts is held prisoner by the Holy Iron Chain Knights but Puck helps him escape. Unfortunately Guts ends up having to hold Lady Farnese hostage to get away. Lady Farnese sees some things that are more demonic than she knew existed.

After another awesome battle Guts has a vision about Casca and returns to the Blacksmith and Ricket only to find that Casca has wandered off. Then the story leaves Guts for a bit and we see more of the misery that has befallen Midland and find out that Lady Farnese has been given a new mission...to guard the Inquisitor and his Torturers.

As you can see from above, a ton happens in this volume and it was all very interesting and engaging. The illustration continues to be top notch and I impressed with progress the story is making. We also meet a lot of very interesting new characters in this volume.

Overall this was an amazing continuation of the Berserk series. I was very impressed with how much story was packed into this volume and with the new characters we meet. I would recommend this whole series to mature readers who enjoy horror fantasy manga.

Best volume of the Conviction Arc by far I am such a sucker for Guts character development since it’s so phenomenal.

“You went alone. You were right beside those irreplaceable things...yet you couldn't bear to immerse yourself together in sorrow with them. So instead...you ran away so that your own malice could burn within you.”

This is where the Conviction Arc really starts to pick up and the foreshadowing in this volume is perfectly executed creating such an ominous and foreboding tone. And the Guts character development and him realizing what he needs to be doing and how his actions were only going to repeat actions of the past, so well executed. As I have said before, I love the volumes that focus on storytelling so much because Miura excels in writing character development. Yes, the action of Berserk is masterful, but the storytelling and plot advances are just as equal as the action.

Binding Chain Chapter

Now the Holy Iron Chain Knights are after Guts and do manage to capture him. Later Guts goes back to the Godot the Blacksmith and Rickert and spends some time away from fighting demons. Now Guts is in search of Casca who left Godot's place.

It's a good volume, but I'm still not quite sure where this series is going. There's not much of a plot right now.

"Thank you. This is the worst I've ever felt.

You'll all keep dying until the day breaks."

Guts escapes from imprisonment at the hands of the Holy Iron Chain Knights, kidnapping Farnese along the way. The clock is ticking as nightfall approaches, when all the demons come out to feed. As usual though, Guts has no problem ripping them up pretty quickly. The problem comes when Farnese is pinned down and Guts gets some pretty nasty PTSD to the Eclipse.

Our hero has never sunk lower.

This volume was incredible. The action was spectacular as always, but we also get a lot of big picture plot development as well. A plague strikes Midland and there's an ominous feeling of change on the wind. Signs of a hawk on the rise, once more.

My favorite part of this volume was Guts' own internal journey through his emotions. For the first time in two years, he doesn't run away and forces himself to acknowledge the pain and the horror in his past. He learns that his hatred is destroying him from the inside out, and that he's selfishly leaving behind what's left of his old life in favor of an endless revenge cycle, hunting down apostles one by one. Miura was a real master at writing nuanced, complex emotional characters.

We also get to see Casca again! Be still, my heart!
