German philologist and folklorist Jakob Ludwig Karl Grimm in 1822 formulated Grimm's Law, the basis for much of modern comparative linguistics. With his brother Wilhelm Karl Grimm (1786-1859), he collected Germanic folk tales and published them as Grimm's Fairy Tales (1812-1815).

Indo-European stop consonants, represented in Germanic, underwent the regular changes that Grimm's Law describes; this law essentially states that Indo-European p shifted to Germanic f, t shifted to th, and k shifted to h. Indo-European b shifted to Germanic p, d shifted to t, and g shifted to k. Indo-European bh shifted to Germanic b, dh shifted to d, and gh shifted to g.

This jurist and mythologist also authored the monumental German Dictionary and his Deutsche Mythologie .

Even though I grew up with goats, I didn't put it together and mistakenly thought this was about a wolf and 7 children.

description

So this one is pretty simple.
Before heading to town, Goat Mom tells her kids that they need to be careful who they open the door to, as there's this wolf out there that wants to eat them.
If the voice is gravelly - it isn't her voice.
DON'T OPEN THE DOOR!
And if the feet/hands aren't white, they aren't hers.
DON'T OPEN THE DOOR!

description

So the kids didn't listen to her. <--is what you're thinking, right?
Well, you're wrong. For once this is a story about kids doing what they're told.
Which is how we know this is a fairytale...

description

So the wolf shows up and tries to get in and the kids are all like, fuck no, wolf! your voice is wrong and your paws are black! scram, asshole!, but the wolf just eats some chalk to smooth out his voice and gets some flour on his paws.
Well. That sounds legit.
How can they possibly not open the door now?

description

And of course, as soon as they open the door, he eats them.
Except for the one who hid in the clock!
So when Mom Goat comes home, they track down the wolf. Because we all know goats are renowned for their tracking ability.
And what do they see? A fat, sleeping wolf!
And what is that wiggling around in his belly?
6 kids that are still alive because the greedy bastard swallowed them whole.

description

Here's where things really go off the rails.
Instead of just stabbing this mo-fo and taking her children, Goat Mom slits his stomach open, snags the kids, puts 6 big-ass rocks in their place, and then sews the wolf back up.
Why?
Plot, my friend. It's a short story and needed a little padding, I think.
Roll with it.

description

The wolf wakes up and he's thirsty.
Which is fair, because he just swallowed 6 young goats whole, then had major surgery without any anesthesia. He heads to the local watering hole with all those rocks rattling around inside of him, leans over to get a drink, topples in...and drowns.
That'll learn ya not to mess with goats, jackass!

description

And they all lived happily ever after.

Continuing my Italian studies, I read this translation of the classic story while waiting for our flight to Adelaide, and was reminded of the wonderful passage from the middle section. The wolf has already made an unsuccessful attempt to enter the house of the seven little kids, but been betrayed by his hairy black paw. In the original:

Then he ran to the miller and said: "Sprinkle some white flour on my paw." The miller thought: the wolf is planning something bad, and he refused; but the wolf said: "If you don't do it, I will eat you!" Then the miller was scared, and he made the wolf's foot white. Yes, that is how people are.

A Fairy Tale

OVERVIEW

The mother goat leaves her seven kids at home and goes to the forest. She tells her kids that don't open the door if the wolf comes while she is gone. But unfortunately wolf tricks them and succeeds in entering the house. He eats 6 kids and leave the one kid as he cannot find him. When the mother goat comes, he tells her what has happened. In furious state, she finds the wolf, sleeping and her kids are alive in the wolf's tummy. She cut the wolf's tummy with scissor, free her kids and fills his tummy with the stones. When the wolf awakes and goes to drink water in the well, he fells in it due to the weight of stones in his tummy.

RANDOM THOUGHTS

Well, I can't say I didn't like the story BUT I can't say I liked it either. It was sort of .... okay-ish read not good not bad.

This is for children who just want entertainment except for logics. So for those this is excellent and enjoyable. But I don't think teenagers can enjoy it that much.

Thanks for your attention ! ^__^

Kinuko Y. Craft's ability to create light sources in illustrations to highlight the most fantastical scenes, is only matched by how she uses the dark crevices on the page to hide little creatures. She is truly a gifted fantasy artist. That is why I request anything that my college library can order that has her name attached to it. And that is how I ended up with this book.

It is incredible to see such bad work come from someone who is so gifted. Part of what makes these illustrations awful is the color pallet that was popular in mass market children's books of the 70's and 80's. They use like eight color on a page and change the tone so everything is kind of washed out, but on the next page they have the same colors and now they have added black to them so everything is darker for no obvious reason. Oi, the size of the goats changes dramatically from page to page and it's super obvious because the background of the room stays the same. The shocked facial expression on these goats is just so comically bad.

The story seems to be Little Red Riding Hood without the fun drama.

I feel like they interviewed Craft, saw her amazing portfolio and said, " We love your work! Now please copy the style of this other book we have already sold a bunch of copies of and take this money."

The story we heard over and over while growing up. Predictable, but still timeless. Great to read to kids.

This is definitely one of the best Brothers Grimm stories I have read in a long time. I was beginning to give up hope but, lo and behold, they didn't let me down forever.

This is a story very similar to Little Red Riding Hood, and I think maybe that's why I might have enjoyed it so much. LRRH is a story that is a large part of my youth, and this was very much a retake of that - although I've never read this before, this brought back so much nostalgia.

I would definitely recommend this one. A mother's revenge, a cunning wolf, and a rather gory story? Yes please! I'll definitely be reading this one again in the not too distant future.

I had never read this book before that I can remember and I am realizing more and more how some of these stories were really violent but always the good triumphs evil. I enjoyed the book.

A mother goat tells her kids she's going into town to get some food. I guess she doesn't want to take her goat kids to Publix cuz there are like 7 of them so instead she's all like "Don't answer the door cuz there's a wolf out there and he's got a rough voice and black paws and will want to eat you."

So, instead of like you know, of course the wolf is gonna come by and trick the kids and eat the kids there is one survivor who hides in the clock case and Mom Goat finds him when she returns to a messed up wolfed out house.

They go out and find the wolf and notice that the goat kids are moving the wolf's tummy while he sleeps. Mother Goat sends living kid back to the house to get her some scissors and thread. Now, this happens while the wolf is asleep! She cuts open the wolf and her kids spill out alive cuz he swallowed them whole, puts some heavy rocks in place of the goat kids, and sews him up just like a Dr. House.

Later the wolf gets up and is thirsty and drowns in the well. Which eww... the goat kids are excited but now they have a wolf carcass in their drinking supply ;)

Classic fable of gluttony told with sweet illustrations. Little hide and seek page for read alongs. Biggest criticism is that the kids (baby goats) look too much like kittens.

5. The Wolf and the Seven Little Kids
An old (mother) goat must leave the house each day to tend to matters that are important to her household of 7 kids. Before she leaves she always warns them to never open the door who is not her, there is a vert bad wolf that will try to trick them and he will gobble them up. Of course, the moment she leaves, the wolf arrives. Now when he knocks on the door and tries to pretend to be the mother goat, they were also told to look for clues. The wolf will have a rough voice, and so he did and they refused to open the door. The wolf finds a way to soften his speech and returns only to find that the other clue they are to look for are his black feet. Again refused to be let in he searches for a way to disguise his feet. At last he returns and when the children see that the voice is soft and the feet are no longer black but white and soft, they open the door and the wolf gobbles all but 1 kid and leaves to enjoy his now full belly. The mother returns and along with her surviving kid they search out the wolf and when they find him knapping they decide to trick the wolf. They cut him open and release the 6 kids and replace them with heavy rocks so that when he awakens the weight and fullness he feels will not have changed. Of course, rocks move differently and the shifting weight was too much for the wolf and ended up being his end.

Personal Note
I love this story and I think I remember most of it told to me when I was very little. The part where she cuts him open really stuck with me and I felt like I had heard it before. It may even be that it's similar in story to like Little Red Riding Hood.

General review of the story:

The story has many recognizable elements. We have talking animals that are just accepted by some humans. The prose is as fun as the story. It’s very conversational at times. “People are like that sometimes, you know.”

We have a wolf, similar to Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs, who is trying to get into a house to eat the seven little goats. The wolf tries to impersonate the goats’ mother but fails a couple times. He eats chalk and gets dough from a miller to trick the goats with his voice and paws. He swallows six of them whole. The youngest goat and the goat mother open the wolf’s stomach while he is sleeping to save the other goats. They then put stones in his body and the wolf drowns when he drinks from a well. He even sings a little song as he realizes he has six rolling stones in his belly.
