Hans Christian Andersen (often referred to in Scandinavia as H.C. Andersen) was a Danish author and poet. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales. Andersen's popularity is not limited to children; his stories — called eventyr, or "fairy-tales" — express themes that transcend age and nationality.

Andersen's fairy tales, which have been translated into more than 125 languages, have become culturally embedded in the West's collective consciousness, readily accessible to children, but presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well. Some of his most famous fairy tales include "The Little Mermaid", "The Ugly Duckling", "The Nightingale", "The Emperor's New Clothes" and many more. His stories have inspired plays, ballets, and both live-action and animated films.

A young boy, observing that his elderly neighbor is lonely, sends one of his tin soldiers as a gift, receiving an invitation to the "Old House" in return. So begins a touching, but short-lived friendship, one that will return to the boy many years later, long after the old man and his old house have disappeared...

Another of Hans Christian Andersen's original fairy-tales, The Old House was originally published in 1847, and has that reflective, somewhat melancholy tone I have come to associate with his work. This picture-book edition sets the tale in a modern city, making the contrast between the old house - with its turrets, carved balcony, and overhanging upper story - and the surrounding buildings (skyscrapers), all the more dramatic. Jean Claverie's interior scenes, in particular, have a warmth that is very appealing.

I'm not sure that there is another single-story, picture-book retelling of The Old House, making it especially fortunate that this one is so engaging. Well worth the time of any Andersen devotee!

I have arranged my takeaway thoughts on this short story into a haiku:

"Living among thoughts,
Weak souls are stunned, crushed by weight
The body can’t feel."

11/2023 reread:
This one has so much atmosphere. I notice that the tin soldier in this story expresses his feelings and fears and runs away, in contrast to the famous steadfast tin soldier.

11/2022 reread:
The old tumbledown house with its memories is so beautiful and sad at the same time. Yet we often do not value what is old and do not think of the events and people behind it. How sweet the little boy is to take an interest in the solitary old man and become his friend!

Moving, bittersweet tale of loneliness, growing old, and the pernicious power of memory.

This one was really not for me. Maybe reading children stories as an adult isn’t the best thing to do for some people.

I personally found this story to be very boring and uninteresting. I really had hard time reading it because I just couldn’t get into the story.

The story is pretty quick read, but that’s the only good thing about this story for me personally.

The writing style in this one was very generic which every fairytale has.

An old man is living in an old house all alone. He receives a tin soldier from a small boy to keep him company. The tin soldier prefers to be in war rather than with the old man, so one day he falls through the cracks. Many years later, the old house is gone, and a new one has been built. The young boy lives in it and can find his tin soldier again.
