Sixteen-year-old Alex Muir is dead. Dead, and furious.

The afterlife she’s been taught about just doesn’t exist. There are only the brutal caverns of the Depths, deep underground – and the tightly controlled gates that protect the paradise of the Azure.

In return for a life of safety, Alex is forced into the Depths as a spy for the tyrannical Azure leader.

But Alex soon discovers that the Depths isn’t quite the nightmare she anticipated. Among the memory-leeching monsters and decadent all-night parties, she manages to find friends in the chaos. Friends that introduce her to the mysterious Flynn Cooper – right-hand man to the ruler of the Depths.

As her spy mission derails and devastating secrets are revealed, Alex realizes that she needs to pick a side. But she’s no longer sure which one is right – or if a right side exists at all.

I loved the idea of this book--the idea that after death, there's the Depths, the Azure and the middle of it. The beginning of the plot dragged me in and I couldnt atop thinking about the story even in my sleep! However, the way the plot was written was not as appealing as the ideas themselves. The audience can feel like the author had been planning the whole plot a long time before writing the actual story, and for me, this takes away from the magic. After a while, the plot itself begins to not be so interesting, but i keep reading to keep away boredom.

I still have some enjoyment from this though, dont get me wrong!

When I first started reading, I instantly fell in love with the book, staying up way too late reading it endlessly. That is- until I got to 3/4 way through and lost a lot of interest. It became boring and less interesting - lacking a certain 'umphf' that the beginning had. I must say though, towards the end, it began to pick up again and regained my interest. I am glad I stuck with it all the way through. The cliff hanger ending is killer. I know a sequel was being made (not sure if it is being finished though, sadly) and am so excited for it to be finished!
