I’m really not sure how I feel about this book. There were some good things and some not so good things, so I think I need to list them out and see where the balance sits.
Before I do that, I should say that the story follows Mia, a burnt out ER nurse, who is talked into a one-month job on a yacht by her friend Alex, who is the on-board cook. After they embark, a storm hits out of nowhere and the two of them end up washed up on a desert island.
But all is not as it seems. The island is sentient and is inhabited by vampires. Mia finds herself drawn to a vampire called Jude, who is sworn to protect her but not get involved with her - and much yearning and denial ensues.
So what did I enjoy?
- The storyline around the island (Nightfall) being aware was original and interesting
- The Covenant (to live in peace and balance without the need to take blood from unwilling humans) drawn up by the vampires with the island many centuries before was a nice addition
- The charming gay friend Alex was a great side character
What was not so great?
- this book lacked the services of an editor. There were strange switches in POV where you’d be in a persons head and partway through a sentence you’d get a switch from first person to third. It made following the story unnecessarily confusing.
- Still with POV, there are anomalies such as Mia mentioning the name of a vampire council member when she first meets them, and nobody has introduced them. Er, hello, she wouldn’t know that!
- Those double spaced paragraphs! Oh man. Why?! It was really off-putting to me until my brain got used to it. I guess, though, it does mean it’s quicker to read than you expect because each page has lots of blank space on it!
- Very noticeable at the beginning was the. Really. Short. Sentences. Again a little annoying. It didn’t last all through the book, so there is that.
- I have to mention the repetitions throughout. There were many times when descriptions were so similar to previously used ones that it jumped off the page. This slowed the pace and felt like packing rather than necessary content.
- Ending on a cliffy like it did was unnecessary IMHO. I would’ve preferred proper single spacing, and more of the story in this book rather than splitting it across several books separated by cliffhangers, which seems to be a trend right now. It just didn’t feel like a rounded enough ending.
Looking back on all of those things I think a good editor could probably have sorted them out. I see it’s self-published, and kudos to the author for the story idea and getting it written, however that lack of editing leaves the story in a place where, for me, I just don’t have the energy or inclination to read the next in the series. It’s a shame as there is a good idea in there, but those issues are too vast to make the most of it.

Imagine getting on a yacht to work for a few weeks and a storm comes out of nowhere. Wrecking the boat and you wake up on an island that doesn’t exist and for the cherry on top, the island is full of vampires.
The world building here is so well done. The tension and slow burn between Mia and Jude had me feeling it in my bones and frustrated in all the right ways.
There is also a binding ceremony that’s so intense it had me on the edge of my seat.
If you love vampire vibes like I do Jade Christy has provided us with another great vampire series.
Excited to start book 2.

This book was interesting but really predictable. The MMC was obvious in every way and the FMC was better but it was easy to see where it was going. At least the vampires were nice

The book starts off with some very unfortunate treasure hunters after a treacherous storm lands them on supposedly an uninhabited island. The treasure hunters soon learn very quickly that the island is inhabited by some vampires who are hungry for blood. Mia Kennedy, a burnt-out ER nurse. She just can’t do this anymore and save lives. Also, Mia doesn’t have a job anymore either, so when her best friend, Axel, offers her a job with him to work on a yacht with him as medical personnel. Mia decides it can’t hurt and takes the job. When the yacht becomes wrecked on an island after a storm, Mia finds out that the island is filled with vampires and one vampire in particular, Jude, is not only fascinated by Mia but strongly desires her. As Mia gets to know Jude, she can’t stop the strong attraction to him, but the island also calls to her. Will Mia be able to save the island, Axel and herself from doom before it’s too late?

Sometimes I read the synopsis, and sometimes I don’t, which, luckily, for me, I do know how to pick good books based on just the covers alone. Yes, the story was interesting and there was not only magic because the evil vampires are almost sirens creating storms, but there is also the other humane island with our hero Jude, who becomes protector of Mia Kennedy, a burnt-out ER nurse, me being a health care professional, I already liked her. Even the island had its own agenda, having its own personality which I thought wasn’t all that gracious and also wanted Mia dead as well. Yes, unfortunately, it ends on a cliffhanger, so you have to read the next one, but it is well worth it.

Vampire Island of Nightfall by Jade Christy starts with a classic, high-stakes hook: burned-out ER nurse Mia Kennedy takes a temporary gig on a billionaire’s luxury yacht alongside her chef best friend, Axel, hoping for a reset. Instead, a violent storm wrecks the ship on Nightfall—a hidden, forbidden island inhabited by vampires. Add in forced proximity, a brooding vampire named Jude who is sworn off humans, a alive-and-sentient island, and high heat, and you have all the ingredients for an addictive dark romantasy.
Unfortunately, the execution holds the story back from reaching its full potential.
What Didn't Work
Head-Hopping Perspective Shifts: The POV bounces too quickly from one character’s inner voice to another’s, often within the same chapter or scene. This constant switching breaks the narrative flow and makes it genuinely difficult to track who is thinking what or keep up with the physical action.
Worldbuilding & Lore Inconsistencies: The vampire lore feels ungrounded. In one scene, while Mia and Jude are lying together, Mia listens to their hearts beating in sync. As an ER nurse—and just as a reader familiar with basic vampire tropes—it immediately raises red flags: aren't vampires supposed to be dead? If there’s an in-universe reason for Jude to have a pulse, it isn't explained well enough to prevent it from pulling you right out of the moment.
The Verdict
It’s truly a shame, because the core idea behind Nightfall is fantastic. The hidden island setup, the danger, the spicy romance, and the cliffhanger ending give the story plenty of raw momentum. However, the head-hopping POV and shaky internal logic are too disruptive to fully enjoy the ride.
If you don't mind fast-and-loose worldbuilding and chaotic perspective jumps, there’s fun to be had here—but with a bit more polish, this could have been a standout.
Unfortunately, the execution holds the story back from reaching its full potential.

This book is for anyone who loves slow-burn with a side order of intense yearning. With the old- world flavor and deep world building of a Discovery of Witches, this drops you into a world where not only do vampires exist, but have built an entire secret society that humans have never known. When Mia is offered a position as a doctor on luxury yacht she is about to find out what the blank spot on the ancient map she inherited is really filled with. When a freak storm shipwrecks her on an uncharted island the first thing she sees is Jude, tall, silent and one hundred percent not human. He is drawn to her against his will, against the oaths he swore centuries before, that he would never take a mate or form a bond, but every time their eyes meet, or their fingers touch it is that much harder to walk away. The Vampire Counsel grants Mia the leave to stay on Nightfall, but the longer she stays the more the enchanted relic protecting the island becomes interested in her, it feels her fear, anxiety, intense connection to Jude, throwing them together in sensual dreams, until even Jude's oaths can't withstand the attraction. But the island wants her for itself, after 500 years the enchantment weakens, the vampires grow restless, and the nearby island of Bloodfall grows bold. The island demands a new Binding, but what will be the consequences, will there be enough left for Jude to save, or will Mia give everything of herself as she falls into darkness. I received an early copy of this book as an ARC reader and would definitely recommend it for any who enjoys vampire romance. Warning this is book 1 or 4 and it does end on a cliffhanger

Vampire Island of Nightfall didn’t deliver the way I wanted it to. The story has interesting bones but it falls thin and feels as if it’s being told TO you all the way through.
I’m 100% sure the author is a big Twilight fan because it has a similar vibe - all about this impossible woman instantly tangled up in a beautiful vampire with values that he ignores for her and who feels like marble…
There are also parts that don’t make sense or are plain annoying. Like the characters *know* everything immediately yet at the same time, they don’t seem to know enough? There’s also a few times when the characters have the same conversation more than once, like they don’t remember they already covered a certain topic.
And then (SPOILER) she has sex?? with the island. Good grief.
The book is fine, feels like it’s about 80% dialogue and brooding, but if I have to hear about the “island thrumming or humming” one more time, I’m going to scream.
2/5 - Not an island I want to visit. And I won’t be reading the rest of the series.

Jade has written another wonderful Vampire Romantasy. I'm so excited for this series.
This story is very well written. I really like the storyline and how the mountain speaks to Mia. Mia is a healer and burnt out from her long hours in the ER.
So Mia decides to go on a job for month on a Yacht with her dear friend Axel. Axel is charismatic and full of life. They get shipwrecked and Mia is trying to help Axel because he was injured.
Jude the devastating handsome Vampire watcher of Nightfall Island goes to find out what is happening on the beach.
As soon as their eyes connect there is a strong pull between them.
This story is suspenseful, full of twists that kept me turning the pages. And this Vampire society is intriguing.
I highly recommend this book. And I will be delving into book 2 very soon.

I’m not really sure how Jade Christy continues to write such compelling books—and so quickly, too! I fell for her books a while ago and never miss a chance to get immersed in the newest romantic adventure she creates.
This time we have Mia, a young woman dealing with burnout who decides to take a one month job working on a yacht. When the yacht shipwrecks on a mysterious island, Mia is introduced to Jude, an enigmatic vampire. The two have wicked chemistry.
As always, Jade writes a compelling and intriguing story. The island is alive, there are threats from nearby, and Mia and Jude discover a deep connection. Plus, there’s Axel, Mia’s best friend, the reason she was on the yacht, and a nice bit of comedic relief all rolled in one.
Jade gives us adventure, mystery, thrills, excitement and magic all wrapped up in an epic love story. This is the first of four books in the series, and I’m very eager to find out what happens next! Recommended.

Mia Kennedy decides a billionaire's yacht is the perfect place to nurse her burnout, but she trades the ER for a mysterious island full of vampires and an ancient sleeping power. The tension with Jude, the vampire who supposedly does not do love, is exactly the kind of slow-burn frustration you would expect when forced proximity is the main plot driver. While the island feels alive enough to be its own character, the transition from nurse to chosen one felt a bit fast for my liking. It is a decent start for a series if you do not mind a cliffhanger ending that basically demands you buy the next book. I enjoyed the grit but could have used less destiny and a bit more common sense from our protagonist before she decided to wake up prehistoric island magic.

I didn’t know what I was getting into with this series, but I love vampire stories, so when I saw this I grabbed all four from Booksprout. And I was so excited to dive into these. I was not disappointed! It was such a good story. I fell in love with Mia and Jude from the moment they met. It was awful that the yacht wrecked on an island that shouldn’t have existed. But in glad that it allowed Mia and Jude to meet. These two connected in the best way. I loved the twists and turns. The way the island responded to her. And the steam between the two of them. I am in love with this book. Hoping to feel the same way about the others.

I love all Jade Christy’ books. I love vampire stories. I love a book that is entertaining and makes you think about the plot. I love books that are relevant to the reader in general. I love well written characters good and evil. This book deals with burnout that Mia experiences from her job. It deals with change that becomes epic. . It deals with best friends. It deals with uncharted islands with the worlds of vampires. It is definitely a love story between Mia and Jude. The Island has desires which Mia feels deeply. Will it consume her. It is definitely 5 star worthy.

This is Book 1 of the Vampire Island Chronicles series. And a FANrastic start it is! Look forward to more from this world.

The characters were very complex and compelling and complicated and perfectly steamy together. Plot was intriguing and intense and exciting and well paced. World building was excellent and impressive. Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.

A great and well written storyline makes this book easy to read and understand. The characters are well written and the dialogue is well edited. Though it was advertised as a non cliffhanger, it is in fact, a cliffhanger and continues in the next book. I wish I had known because though I enjoyed the book. I do not like continuations. The spice level, is a three out of five considering there was only one scene and it was good quality. Will I continue on with the series; I will give the second book a go but if the romance doesn't pick up, I will probably not continue.

A girl just trying to get some piece and quite and her friend, a hidden island with vampires. This book is not only about falling for a vampire but trying to survive, what with some vampires wanting her blood and even the ancient island wants her. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. This is a must read!!!!.

too cryptic
I expected the cliffhanger. I’m just disappointed that after more than three hundred pages, I don’t feel as if I’ve learned anything important.
I will read book two. I’ll decide after that whether or not I’ll finish the series.
I like Jade Christy’s writing style. I just wish progress in this story weren’t so slow. I also don’t understand why Axel is part of the story.

Okay so I'm a sucker for anything with hidden worlds and ancient secrets, but what got me was the meditation on consent and autonomy woven throughout. The author doesn't just hand-wave the power dynamics; she actually sits with them. As someone who works in healthcare, the protagonist's journey from self-sacrifice to self-worth hit hard. Recommend to anyone who thinks they're "too broken" for adventure.

Okay, that was very interesting. We have Vampires living on 2 hidden islands, one hunts and kills humans, the other has donors who give blood willingly. Nightfall island is alive because of a relic and it has taken interest in a human healer. But it wants her and the vampire that she has fallen for. This is going to be very interesting to see what happens next.

I really enjoyed this well written vampire story as I love Mia and Jude together. The two of them are great together and I loved it from start to finish. I am very excited for book two. I love vampire romance!!! I recommend! No Spoilers!.

Vampire and human co exist
I loved this book. The idea of being on a living island filled with vampires was so captivating. In this world, vampires and humans coexist in a unique balance—humans provide what the vampires need, while the vampires offer protection and solace in return. It kept me hooked the entire time.

Definitely has new twist!!
What a different take on a vampire world , refreshing…..Mia and Axel have found themselves in harms way after a trip they were unaware of the destination goes even worse than expected. Now they must try to survive. I’m definitely headed on to book 2 as I really need to see where this story goes

Holy. Crap. I stayed up until 3am devouring this and I'm not even mad about the sleep deprivation. The tension between duty and desire? Mind-blowing. Also the whole "some places call to you" thing really resonated made me think about the times I've ignored my own intuition. Must-read for anyone who needs permission to want something for themselves.

I came for the vampire romance (no shame) but stayed for the surprisingly nuanced look at found family and what we owe the communities that shelter us. The prose is lush without being purple, and the worldbuilding feels lived-in rather than exposition-dumped. Big fan. If you like your fantasy with actual thematic weight, this is it.

the exploration of how institutions (even well-meaning ones) can consume the very people they claim to protect is chef's kiss. Also the romance actually serves the plot instead of distracting from it, which is rarer than it should be. Valuable lesson about questioning systems that demand your blood literal or metaphorical.

As a former ER nurse myself, I felt SEEN by this protagonist's exhaustion and her slow reclamation of joy. The book taught me that rest isn't reward, it's resistance. The supernatural elements are fun but the real magic is watching someone remember she's allowed to want a life. Recommend especially to my fellow burnt-out healthcare folks.

I usually DNF romantasy because the worldbuilding feels like an afterthought, but this? The island itself is a character, and the way it mirrors the protagonist's internal landscape is genuinely clever. Lesson learned: sometimes the thing calling to you isn't destruction, it's destiny. Or maybe they're the same thing and that's okay. Anyway, read it.
