I was fortunate enough to discover a "new" author, Caleb Wygal, back in early 2021 and got the opportunity to join his fraternity of beta readers.
Since then, I have had the opportunity to read and devour at least eight of his ten Myrtle Beach Mysteries books (missing only books #3 and 9, according to Goodreads).
In Coastal Vendetta—the high-stakes tenth installment of Caleb Wygal’s Myrtle Beach Mystery Series—bookstore owner Clark Thomas and his wife, Detective Gina Gomez, find their peaceful coastal life shattered. The narrative follows the duo as a calculated string of violence forces them to reopen long-closed cases tied directly to a dark past.
Maybe it was because I didn't read the last book (I was tied up at the time, working on a number of other novels, mea culpa !!), but I was aware of the other books that this author had in his other series - Lucas Caine Thrillers - and found it slightly confusing that he had tied in the two characters at the first of the book (only to leave any mention of Lucas Caine alone after about the third chapter).
Key Plot Elements
A Chilling Pattern: A precise series of targeted acts indicates that someone is deliberately settling old scores along the coast.
Ties to the Past: The investigation pulls Clark and Gina toward cases connected to Gina’s father's unfinished legacy as a Newark detective, as well as violent historical events that previously scarred Surfside Beach.
A Sprawling Network: The search for the truth uncovers a web of betrayal, corruption, and vengeance stretching directly from the Carolina coast back to the streets of Newark.
High-Stakes Threat: The investigation turns deeply personal and incredibly urgent when someone Clark loves most becomes the central target of the threat.
Family at Risk: Amidst fracturing trust and blurring lines, Clark and Gina must risk everything to protect their adoptive son, Timmy, from the escalating danger.
That said, I find that this author is a relatively quick, enjoyable read and would easily be a favourite for an aficionado of quaint, small-town mysteries. Readers of authors such as Susan Boyer and Tom Turner would quickly enjoy this series. I would give this book a solid 4.5 stars on a five-star rating scale.
As with all my literary ramblings, this is just my five cents' worth.
