Reality Romance #1

Marrying Mr. Perfect

Rate this book
Sometimes it takes a reality television show to show you the love that’s right in front of you...

To Louisa Tanner, Jack Doyle is perfect—heart surgeon, loving single father, and best friend a girl could have—so it's no surprise when he's tapped as the next Mister Perfect for the reality dating series Marrying Mister Perfect. But watching her secret crush romancing gorgeous women on national television? That flat out sucks—even if he will never see her as more than a pal.

Jack is skeptical of reality shows as a path to love, but drastic measures are needed to shake him and Lou out of their rut. His friend deserves better than being his live-in nanny and will never chase her dreams if she is busy taking care of him and his kids, so he vows to take the show seriously and find a new wife.

But the more stunning women he woos on command, the more he begins to realize the only woman he wants just might be the one he left back home. How can he seduce his best friend without jeopardizing their friendship? Especially when the cameras are always rolling...

Marrying Mr. Perfect is a plain imitation of the Bachelor.

Lou is a doormat. She's been in love with Jack almost from the moment she met him as a teenager and has taken up looking after his kids for four years since he's been widowed, putting a hold on all of her opportunities. He used her, and she mobilised that. I cringed whilst reading this, feeling utterly sad and wanting her to get a grip and not be stepped on disgustingly, almost pitifully.

He goes on the show and is kissing/making out with dozens of sex-pumped beautiful bombshell women. Having action with them, being seduced into dates in amazing locations whilst Lou looks after his kids at home. That is where the real manipulation was, and I felt sick and my throat felt tight. I wanted her to go out on dates, and be the girl she was meant to be as opposed to festering whilst he had his flings. Monogamy my ass!

Yet, after being stepped on repeatedly and undermined, she's willing to visit him every other week with his kids (with his goddamn widowed wife who she all but treats as her own kids) and have him talk about his dates and insult her value in his family. She's willing to objectify herself. Honestly, her "change", getting a nice new hairstyle and new outfits with wearing makeup suddenly made him look at her differently. I think not. He should've wanted her before the upheaval and the fact she did it so he would notice her made me even more aggravated. He wanted her because she looked "pretty" now. Wasn't she gorgeous before? How the hell could he not have felt any attraction for four years? Did no makeup and slumpy clothes make her a dog, and is makeup and new hair a requirement for him to finally want her? She wears a revealing swim suit and he decides to kiss her. She's easy. Misogynistic is what it was. Disgusting is another word.

Not a hero by any respects. I'm angry and bitter. He had thirty willing lovers in his cradle and finally accepted he loved her at the end. Fuck off Jack, you bastard. And Lou is a heroine willing to be trampled. Congratulations on your wonderful family (!)

3.5 stars.

I really, really enjoyed this book for the most part and up until I was around the 80% mark I was seriously considering giving this 4 stars but the ending was a bit rushed.

I loved Lou and and Jack and the little family they had going on. It was interesting seeing how their relationship developed, the best friends to lovers trope will always be one of my faves and this books is all about that. I might read the next books in this series because they are all about couples who find love thanks to a Bachelor/Bachelorette style show but not in the way people expect and it's a really interesting concept.

Maybe it's just because I'm into stories about reality TV right now, after reading Eligible and watching UnReal - whatever it was, I loved this book, and couldn't stop reading it.

3.5 rounded up to 4 stars

This is a cute book, despite the premise being rather unbelievable and the resolution a bit predictable. The writing and execution are nicely done and the characters are likeable though, so I have to give it credit.

Louisa/Lou Tanner has been living platonically with her friend Dr. Jackson/Jack Doyle for four years, essentially acting as a live-in housekeeper and nanny for his two children, Emma and TJ, ever since his wife Gillian died. Lou has been hopelessly in love with Jack since they met in school, even before he started dating Gillian. Unfortunately for her, he's never thought of her as anything other than his closest friend. Now he's so focused on his medical practice and being a good father to his kids that he's completely clueless about her feelings.

But things get a radical shake-up when Miranda, a dear friend of Lou's and a producer for a reality TV show called "Marrying Mr. Perfect," decides that Jack is the perfect candidate for the title role. Although initially Jack is resistant, Miranda convinces him that it would be best for Lou if he moves on so she will stop putting her life on hold and pursue her own dreams. His hospital thinks it will be wonderful publicity for them and allows him to take the time off from work. Jack reluctantly embarks on the "process" of choosing his perfect mate from 30 gorgeous women, all vying for his attention and affection, in lavish surroundings with TV camera recording his every move.

The premise of Lou being so completely unselfish that she puts all of her career plans aside for FOUR YEARS to help out a friend is kind of implausible to begin with, but when you add to that her unrequited love for the friend and deciding that she's perfectly happy with that, it's really preposterous. Jack isn't a bad guy at all. He's just been putting one foot in front of the other, coping with his wife's unexpected death and his kids that he adores while building his demanding medical practice, so he's never given himself the opportunity to really examine his situation. Lou just jumped in and immediately made everything uncomplicated and comfortable, and that's how it's continued. Miranda is a force of nature and teeters on the brink of being unlikeable because she's so good at manipulating people, but she proves herself to essentially be a good-hearted friend.

There are no major surprises in the way the plot develops except for the personality of one of the "Suitorettes," who is appealingly down to earth and perceptive. The "behind the scenes" nonsense with the reality show is amusing. I do wish there had been another potential love interest for Lou to put the resolution of the story a little more in doubt, but this succeeds as a sweet, fluffy read.

I'm not a fan of the real life reality shows that deal with finding love, but I loved this book Marrying Mister Perfect.

Lou and Jack have been best friends since high school. Since four years ago have lived together, Jacks wife had died and left him with two small children to raise. Lou stepped up to help raise the kids and take care of the house while he worked as a heart surgeon. Why wouldn't she, they were best friends, but little did Jack know that Lou had secretly been in love with him for years. Lou could never tell him, she is not his type.

Jack could always count on his best friend Lou to be there. They were best buds. She was helping him raise his children, taking care of his home. Always supported him. One day a friend of theirs came home to visit for a family wedding, she was the producer of the Mister Perfect reality show.
She thought that Jack would be the perfect man for the show. When Jack agreed, he did so with Lou's feelings in mind, feeling maybe he was holding her back from living her life.

He goes on the show to find his happily ever after. Many many wonderful exotic dates with beautiful women later he starts to realize that maybe the woman of his dreams might just be the best friend he left at home. When he realizes this he needs to find a way to make her see that they are meant for each other. Can he do that without ruining their friendship and take it further.

I have to admit I got angry with Lou through a lot of this book, but that was okay, this was a very down to earth realistic relationship. I loved how Lou was so determined to let Jack know how she felt about him one moment and scared to death and changed her mind the next. To see her come out of her shell a bit was wonderful. To see Jack open his own eyes was terrific. I loved how the characters could be you or me in this book, just normal every day people trying to find their way in this big world, and wanting someone to love by their side while doing it. It shows all the insecurities most of us have, and none of us want. I am so happy I got this book and will get the next one in the series too!!!

This book was so freaking amazing. I loved it. It was just so good and swoon worthy that I couldn't help but fall in love with this story and the characters. It just great romance between Jack and Lou. I was rooting for them all the way. The just belonged together. Heck they had practically been a couple for fours without the romantic benefits or heart felt declarations.

There were so many positives about this book that really made me fall in love with it. First, it was a friends to lovers story, which is always a plus in my book. There were lots of unrequited feelings going on her side. That's always fun because it created intensity and extra edge to the story as well as lots of delicious angst that I always love. But not only that with this setup, it laid out the groundwork for lots of tension and conflict between the pair especially how oblivious Jack was of Lou's feelings. It was obvious to everyone but him that she was so deeply in love with him that it practically was right in his face. But I liked that he was because it made more entertaining and sweeter in the end when he realized his own feelings for her. She was his wife whether he admitted or not. But it was just so good to see it all play out. Loved all the angst. And at times it broke me because I knew how deep she was, but he was clueless, and it hurt her that he never seen her that way for the past four years. He did wake up almost too late.

The second positive was the compliment to the friends to lovers story and that was the fact that Jack agreed to be on a Bachelor type reality show, in fact that was exactly was. It just made the story that complicated and delicious. Not only did Lou have to deal with the fact Jack would never love her like she loved him, but she had to deal with the fact that he was courting 30 different woman so that he could find love. Conflict city. Plus it added another layer of angst and intense emotion especially for her. She was definitely put through the romantic ringer, which made it all the sweeter in the end. It was heartbreaking to see her suffer though especially when she came visiting with children while he was filming the show. There was friction there that was compounded by all those unspoken emotions she had for him. It was really interesting to see it played out and just whole reality aspect.

The third positive point was when he finally woke the heck up and finally realized that Lou was the one for him. In typical fashion, it didn't happen until a steamy kiss in the hot tub, but he got there, which was the point. Once he realized his deep love for her, he went balls to the walls and knew that couldn't be with anyone else in the show. But due to contract he signed, he had to continue on the show and not mention a word about his feelings to Lou. More great tension and angst. And it was heartbreaking because he knew what he wanted but he couldn't have it, and it was killing him. He just wanted Lou and be the family that they had always been. Plus he still didn't know if Lou loved him that way so he was dealing with that as well.

Fourth positive thing in this story was the romance. There were very romantic yet very sexy scenes between Lou and Jack, and I loved them. The first scene was the hot tub scene. Oh my goodness it was so sexy and hot that it practically melted the pages, but it was also very romantic and very much setup for seduction. That was the turning point for them. I loved that sexy little scene. I was into it. The second scene that was sexy and romantic was their time in Paris. From the moment I heard that Lou wanted to go to Paris for years, I was pretty sure that they were going to end up there and that would be where the great romantic gesture would come. I was right, but it was even more beautiful than I anticipated. It was sweet. It tender. It was romantic. It sensual. And it was very sexy. It truly was a dream date filled with love and affection between them. I loved how they toured the city and how romantic that was. To the kiss by Seine was really beautiful. Then the first time they made love was beyond sensual and very sexy and beautiful. It was definitely worth the wait. The last romantic scene was the proposal scene. His words were elegant and beautiful and very heartfelt. It was tender. The setup was good. It really was a perfect proposal. I loved everything about it. It brought a smile to my face and made my soar at them finally getting this moment.

The next positive which tied in to the angst was all the anticipation surrounding their relationship. For a majority of the story it had a will they/won't they kind of feel to it. It kept me on my toes as I waited with bated breath for their first proper as well as the first time they love to the first time they said I love you. It just kept building and building to the point I couldn't wait. Yet never felt too long or overly dragged out, the pacing was perfect. It was just enough to whet the appetite and gave me yearning for more. It kept me ver engaged as I couldn't wait to see what happened next.

Really I have nothing but positive things to say about this books. Those are just a few of the standouts for me, but there were many more like the characters. I could go on and on but then this review would go forever. It was just the perfect angsty friends to lovers story. The was clear example of why I love the trope. It had everything I could want. It went deep emotionally. It was intense. I felt right along with characters. Lots of feels going on. Lots of yummy tension between Lou and Jack. Great anticipation was created between the pair. They had this deep connection going on that I loved. I loved all that sexual tension going on. I loved it all. It was just that good. It was amazing. I will definitely read this book again and revisit some of my favorite romantic scenes.

Highly recommend for the lovers of the friends to lover trope and anyone who likes good emotional angsty romance. Because it was totally awesome.

I won this book in Goodreads First Read.

I'm not a fan of those TV shows that have people finding true love on what is basically a game show, and I have a low opinion of the intelligence of the contestants on them, but the book--ah, the book I loved. It was delightfully written, and I enjoyed it and would read more by this author. She showed the reader the background of the fictional "Marrying Mr. Perfect" TV show and what goes on that we don't see from our view in front of the TV set. The only part that as a reader it was hard to "suspend our disbelief" about, was why in the world he didn't see what was right in front of him long before the book even started. Some men!!

I hate reality shows because they aren't actually real, but I loved this book.
Poor Lou, living with the man she's lusted after her whole life, just him and her and his two kids, she really the only mother the children have ever known, but Jack, good ol' clueless Dr. Jack is her lover in her dreams only. When Lou was younger she saved up all her money and worked tirelessly to travel to Paris, but an emergency in her hometown made her put her dreams aside and donate her money. That's Lou all over, she works tirelessly to help, but squashes her own dreams.
Now Jack is going to be on a reality show, to find a mother for his kids and a wife for himself, leaving Lou out in the weeds.....

Such a cute story, and such a fun premise to the series! I really enjoyed the character development and banter between the hero and heroine, and it was fun to see a behind-the-scenes exploration of reality television. Great read if you're looking for something on the sweeter side (with enough exploration of the characters to add depth to the sweetness).

Quick read; a little too much drama

This was a quick read, with good chemistry between Jack and Lou. Miranda is a bit of a stereotype, and I figured that the next book would be about her. (I was wrong, though.) There's more drama than is strictly necessary, but if you like "The Bachelor," this book will probably appeal to you.

I just finished reading this book. It was a FUN read... I knew how the story should end... but was never quite sure what ending would be written until I got there. This was a joy to read.. with enough twists and turns to keep you engaged, and characters that you just had to love.

This ebook was available for free on Amazon, and, intrigued by the premise, I decided to give it a go. As a Bachelor fan, I adored the idea of the story taking place in a fictional version of the Bachelor where the protagonist is secretly in love with her best friend who becomes the next "Mr. Perfect" (aka Bachelor). I've read a couple different Bachelor-esque love stories of varying quality, so I was hooked. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, which is told from both the male and female leads' points of view and has quite likable main characters, albeit fairly stereotypical supporting characters. However, it was EXTREMELY predictable, and, at times, a little boring. Predictability isn't always bad (I love knowing there's a happy ending and who doesn't love certain romance tropes?), but there were pretty much ZERO twists and turns to this story to add intrigue. I guess in that way, it's not very anxiety-inducing, if that's what you're looking for. There's also a strange and rather unfinished subplot involving one of the television producers, that was never quite wrapped up and it's unclear whether it may be a thread through the series, the producer gets her own book, or what we got was supposed to her happy ending. Regardless, for a free book, it's a definite download. Now the question is whether I spring to purchase the rest in the series...

Reality shows...are they for real? This romance plays on the theme of a reality show like The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. While I have not seen either of them, I have seen the advertisement promotions so can only imagine how out of control it can be.

A last minute cancellation leaves a (TV producer) friend without a contestant, and she convinces Jack Doyle, a doctor with two young children, to become the latest contestant in her Marrying Mister Perfect reality show. The problem: her friend Louise is secretly in love with him, but can't admit it since he considers her just a good (albeit platonic) friend, who happens to be his live-in caregiver, too.

Twenty, count 'em twenty, gorgeous women are in the running for a ring while Lou is on the sidelines watching her life implode. Will Jack find the woman of his dreams as he goes through this "process" or will he finally realize the woman of his dreams has been not only his best friend for the past four years, but the love he has been looking for? And once he discovers his true feelings, how will it be received? By the show? By Lou? By his kids, Emma and TJ?

A cute romance with likeable characters, especially Marcy, the romance writer who may be the savviest of them all.

3.5🌟

It's nice. It's a riveting page turner. Unfortunately, I found Lou extremely pathetic and couldn't like her. I couldn't sympathetise with either her or her situation which she created for herself.

Jack, is a typical male very comfortable having all his mundane day to day issues with his children dealt with effectively, so he really didn't need to change the status quo. So, the reality show is a good shake up for him.

Amongst the support characters, Miranda and Kelly were really fun gals. Marcy, got on my nerves.
The kids were cute.

I have a huge issue with this plot: 4 bloody long years she's in that house handling his kids as hers, where were her family? Didn't they provide perspective to her relationship? What about Kelly? Its not possible no ones raised questions regarding this platonic relationship? It seems very far fetched and improbable.

If you can overlook the above issue, then it's a quick, fun read.

I met Lizzie Shane this year at a conference and got this book. The blurb sounded awesome and I was really looking forward to checking out this series. Lou and Jacks story was absolutely amazing! I could not put it down once I started it. It is a very well written book and you just fall in love with the characters. I couldn't imagine how it would feel to be in Lou's position. Watching the man she has been in love with for years go on a reality TV show to find a wife. She has been the mother role for his children for years and the thought of not being that anymore really rocks her. Once Jack starts the show, he soon realizes that he can't seem to stop thinking of Lou.
I just loved this story and I can't wait to read more of this series! I would highly recommend this read!

It was a great book because you don't know who to vote for, Tristan or Blade. Callie was so naive about the vampire world when she went on vacation to Las Vegas and tracked down her old friend, the rocker, Tristan. Blade was such a cutie and genuine. I don't know who I would have voted for to be with Callie. The hot rock star that she knew way back when or Blade, the wholesome, good looking, friendly guy she fell in love with. The end kind of left you hanging which is why I love the "Romance" package, I can get rid of this book in my library and start on the next in series. The narrator did a great job with the characters and their personalities.

Actual rating: 1.5 stars

This book started really good and progressively got worse for me. I upped the rating from a 1 to 1.5 because the last 10% of the story was okay. I have the next book in the series but I won't be reading it. I hated this book. Slow, boring, the FMC was a lame as hell doormat, the characters had zero chemistry (and the sex scene isn't until 90%), not enough dialog, and too much angst. Probably more but, I stopped taking notes after awhile. Thankful it was free.

A fun quick predictable airplane read.

Recently I read something about how early 2000s feminism, or maybe just high school feminism of the time (?) had a lot of competition between women and it was interesting to see it in this book. Lou is easy to root for and so is Marcy but the way they describe Katya is just straight-up caricature in her few scenes. But maybe I've also just been in a bubble and there are many women like that.

Amazing story line.

Never read any of Lizzie Shane's books before. I saw the cover thought I'd give it a read and couldn't put the book down. I had read it in 2 days. I hope to hear about jack and lou again bit if not it was left at a good point. So well done Lizzie will definitely be reading more of your books.

It was a really sweet story. A few weeks ago, I finished a book about a romance reality show but I didn't like it at all. I'm happy to have finally found an author who managed to make it right! Thank you!
I'll definitly look at the other books in the series. I'm intrigued about Marcy, the future Miss Right.

Grabbed as a free read but I should have stopped when I realised it was about a reality tv dating show, which I loath.
Bad enough they are on television without books being written about them.
Found Louise an immature doormat and Jack, a bit of a a**, and Miranda a conniving biarch.
Ratings winner all the way.

This book was so heart gripping. My heart aches for Lou and her unrequited love for Jack.

When he finally sees her, he takes her to Paris. The ensuing romance was hot off the charts and well written. Lizzie Shane sure knows how to write.

Four years of putting her life on hold and living in his home was not enough time for her to let him know how she felt about him. I really, really don't care for reality TV. Glad this had a happy ending.
