When the organizer of a major cat competition is murdered and the grand prize is stolen, Shell McMillan will have to claw through the clues to catch a killer . . .
The Kitty Club Cat Show has come to Fox Hollow, and everyone from casual cat lovers to competitive breeders has shown up for the contest. Pet shop owner Shell McMillan has two cats entered, and like everyone else she has her eye on the grand prize, a vibrant red leash with a solid gold cat-head figurine attached. As the judging begins, cat owners clash and the fur flies, until a power outage throws the whole arena into darkness. But when the lights come back up, the event's organizer is found dead and the grand prize is missing.
Shell knows the obvious suspect is the victim's stepson, who's up to his neck in gambling debts and would kill to get his hands on his inheritance. But there are plenty of disgruntled competitors to consider too, including some who had an old score to settle with the victim. Every clue is catnip for Shell, especially as she puzzles out whether the thief and the murderer are the same person. Either way, with two crimes to solve and a killer on the loose, she'll have to tread carefully so that her dreams of Best in Show don't end with Rest in Peace . . .
Fox Hollow is abuzz with excitement as it welcomes the Northeast Kitty Club Cat Show. Competitive breeders from near and far gather to showcase their prized cats, while the event also offers a household pet category for enthusiasts of mixed-breed or undocumented cats. Shell McMillan, owner of the Urban Tails Pet Shop, not only sets up a booth at the show but also enters her two cats in the competition, hoping to bring home the grand prize and display it proudly in her shop.
Soon, the judging begins, and the event becomes organized chaos as the cats are groomed and fluffed and their handlers move them to the rings for competition. Then the lights go out. When power is restored, the grand prize is gone, and the woman in charge of the event is dead.
Shell slips right into sleuth mode with Gary right on her heels. The victim had made a long list of enemies in her career, but her stepson’s urgent need for inheritance due to gambling debts stands out as a possible motive. With two crimes to solve, Shell hopes they can get a leash on both the thief and the murderer before they get their paws on another victim, including Shell or Gary.
Kahlua and Princess Fuzzypants get their time to shine in this new installment of the Urban Tails Pet Shop Mysteries. Purrday didn’t mind being left out, because his time to shine was coming. These cats have such delightful personalities. I know the author and her cat, Rocco, collaborate to get these feline characters just right.
Managing the booth and showing Kahlua and Princess Fuzzypants keeps Shell and Gary busy, so they are grateful when Olivia steps in to help during the murder and theft investigations. Shell’s boyfriend, Josh, Fox Hollow’s lead homicide detective, was away getting specialized training for the new bodycams and armor the department just purchased. The victim, Isobel Lanford, the managing director of the event, was notorious for being difficult, giving Shell and Gary plenty of suspects to consider. When another victim is discovered, the stakes escalate. Shell’s curiosity and determination shine through as she and Gary follow every clue, working through the complex web of motives. Ms. LoTempio has plotted out a fantastic mystery giving readers, Shell, and Gary a tough mystery to solve. I was right there with Shell when she was trapped by the killer with an “itchy trigger finger” and all the evidence she needed. Then . . . nope, no spoilers.
A Blue Ribbon Murder is a highly entertaining cozy mystery, filled with fabulous feline characters and their wonderful human companions. The cats add charm and humor to a well-constructed plot, making it a delightful read. Ms. LoTempio’s storytelling shines throughout the series, and I recommend every book for fans of cozy mysteries and cat lovers alike.

#ABlueRibbonMurder #NetGalley Former actress Shell McMillan finds herself wrapped up in another murder investigation, this time at the cat show. Shell has entered two of her cats, but when she finds herself standing over the dead body of the shows organizer, her investigative skills kick in. Along with her former co-star Gary, the dynamic duo are determined to find the answers. I like this series very much, the cats are really well described, and I can picture them in my head when I'm reading. This is a definite 5 star review.
A Blue Ribbon Murder by TC LoTiempo takes place, mostly, at a premiere cat show. In fact, the victim is the director of the show. There are plenty of suspects, one of the problems. Shell had in following leads. Shell is an amateur investigator as well as ex-TV star, pet shop owner, and the mom to three lovely felines. One could not be shown at the Kitty Club Cat Show as he was missing an eye, but the others, Kahlua, who was a beautiful Siamese, and Princess Fuzzypants who was a gorgeous coon cat for whom Shell had no papers, were. Between running her booth and showing the two cats, she had her hands full. Gary, her friend and ex-costar in the TV show, lived at her house, did all the cooking, and worked in the shop. He was also the one who pushed the two of them into investigations. Not that Shell wasn’t right there.
Good characters and this was a particularly interesting setting showing how over-the-top pet owners can get. The murderer turned out to be a surprise and took some seriously focused investigating to put the pieces together. This was a fun novel and I recommend it highly.

5/6 stars I love this book cause the cat show really leans into the cats being a big part of it. I think Gary is my favorite character, he is such a good friend and I love how they work and live together in such a supportive way. Also he isn't too stupid to live... The cats are great. The mystery fun. A little repetitive in some parts but I can't wait for the next one. I do want a little more romance though!
Where were you when the lights went out? Hopefully not with Shell McMillan. Why? Because when they came back on she was staring at a dead body. Who killed the cat show organizer? And, why?
As it turns out, there are any number of likely suspects, including the stepson. Shell, a former co-star of a popular detective show, just can't seem to help herself. She launches into a real life investigation almost immediately. Fortunately, given the tight schedule she's on at the cat show between being a vendor and showing her own Siamese cat, Kahlua, she has the help of her former co-star, Gary Presser. Nope, no romance there. Shell's boyfriend is the local police detective. There are quite a few characters coming and going, too, and since this is my first read of this series, I wasn't quite sure how many were regular characters. I did enjoy meeting most. Shell was easy to like although I did question how she managed to find time to sleuth here and there given everything else going on, including her one-eyed cat at home. Seems even her non-papered but probably Maine Coon is even entered in what is essentially a pet category, She also didn't seem to hesitate confronting suspects alone albeit Gary did manage to have her back whenever possible. As it was, many of the clues and info obtained were more a matter of being at the right place at the right time.
Despite Shell's rashness at times, I liked her and the probably regulars. The mystery itself was intriguing with Shell practically being on the spot at the time it occurred. The suspects all seemed to have viable reasons for being on the list, too, so that was a realistic note, as was the seemingly long-suffering sheriff's sighs discovering Shell at the site of another body. While I won't detail the plot further, the background stories include everything from the family dynamics of the victim's family to cat show antics and jealousies, artists, secrets, deep secrets at that, and even rumors of forgery. Toss in Shell's trio of cats, one one-eyed, and it was an interesting read once I sorted out the characters. It obviously worked as a standalone although I think I'd have zeroed in on who was new and who was a regular faster had I read previous books. In the grand scheme of things, however, it worked well. Thanks #BeyondThePagePublishing for introducing me to Shell and the world of Fox Hollow. The cat show antics were fun for this admitted dog person and loved her cats' personalities. Hey, I've always says I'm character driven. It isn't always the human characters that pull you in, you know. Grin.

In A Blue Ribbon Murder by T.C. LoTempio, Shell McMillan is both a vendor and the owner of two contestants at the cat show.
Can Shell nab the culprit before they strike again?
Shell McMillan Crishell, also known as Shell, McMillan, was talked by her mom into not only being a vendor but also having two of her cats become contestants in the cat show. Shell and her business associate, Gary, are a hoot. I enjoyed following them as they solved crimes. She has a knack for solving crimes that are different from other mysteries that I read, which is nice. Her cats are hilarious. I like Shell a lot as a character, and I think that if I were to come across her walking down the street, I would talk to her. Probably even go into her shop, the Urban Tails Pet Shop, to see what they had for my pets.
The Mystery Shell and Gary find the body, and they decide to put on their sleuthing caps again to solve the mystery. I feel like both Shell and Gary use a bit of what they did on their show, Spy Anyone, when they start to solve a mystery. Even I had to admit, though, that this one was a tough one. I had an inkling of who did it, but I definitely didn't get the motive. Ms. LoTempio did a great job of hiding that one in her clues really well.
Four Stars My rating for A Blue Ribbon Murder by T.C. LoTempio is four stars. I do recommend this book as it kept me guessing. One can read these books out of order without getting confused by references to earlier mysteries. Ms. LoTempio is a great author. She gets you to think while reading her books.
Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of A Blue Ribbon Murder by T.C. LoTempio.
A BLUE RIBBON MURDER by T.C. LoTempio The Sixth Urban Tails Mystery
With some aggressive campaigning Fox Hollow, Connecticut is hosting this year's Kitty Club Cat Show. With her mother as one of the event sponsors Shell McMillan, owner of the Urban Tails Pet Shop and former star of Spy Anyone, is not only serving as a vendor, she's entered Kahlua into the competition. That $25,000 grand prize certainly could help and there's also the added mystery of a second prize. While her Urban Tails booth is doing brisk business, she and her partner Gary can't help but notice plenty of cat fights. From volatile competitors and protesters to the exacting event organizer and her Lothario stepson there's plenty of catty behavior. But when Shell and Gary go to meet with Isobel, they find her murdered and the special prize gone. Did she interrupt the thief or was her murder the goal? Is there a thief and a killer or just one villain? While selling pet supplies and showing two of their cats Shell and Gary will once again put on their deerstalker hats and try to solve the crimes.
I really enjoy the Urban Tails Mystery series and loved the fun setting of a cat show in this sixth outing. While I missed seeing much of Josh I really love seeing Shell and Gary work their investigative magic. I also like how they work together, both in Urban Tails and as housemates. They really are a great team and always have each other's backs. The mystery was solid with smart sleuthing and a good variety of suspects and motives, although there was one time I yelled at Shell for running off to check out a suspect alone.
I love all of the cats and was glad to see Kahlua have her moment in the spotlight. Of course, Purriday is perfect and I love how he and Princess Fuzzypants love each other.
A BLUE RIBBON MURDER turns the controlled chaos of a cat show into a purrfect murder mystery.
A Blue Ribbon Murder is a charmingly mischievous cosy mystery, full of cattitude, small‑town chaos, and just enough danger to keep the pages turning long after you meant to stop. Fox Hollow comes alive with the bustle of the Kitty Club Cat Show — a swirl of competitive breeders, proud pet parents, and the kind of simmering rivalries only a high‑stakes feline contest can inspire. It’s all delightfully over the top, right up until the lights go out and the organiser is found dead, the coveted red‑and‑gold prize leash nowhere to be seen.
Shell McMillan makes for a wonderfully grounded sleuth amid the mayhem. With her pet shop instincts, her wry humour, and her two show‑ready cats in tow, she slips naturally into the role of investigator. The suspects are plentiful and deliciously messy: a stepson drowning in debts, competitors with long memories and sharp claws, and a community where grudges seem to breed as quickly as kittens. The mystery balances its playful tone with a steady undercurrent of tension, letting Shell sift through motives, misdirection, and the occasional hissy fit with an easy, engaging charm.
What gives the story its warmth is the way Shell navigates the investigation with both curiosity and care, never losing sight of the human (and feline) stakes beneath the spectacle. The question of whether the thief and the killer are one and the same adds a satisfying extra layer, turning each clue into something worth lingering over.
Light, lively, and full of cosy‑crime sparkle, A Blue Ribbon Murder is a delightful addition to the series — perfect for readers who enjoy their mysteries with humour, heart, and a generous helping of whiskered mischief.
My thanks to TC LoTempio, the publisher and netgalley for the ARC
I really enjoyed this story, but was a bit lost on some of the characters. I will note that I haven’t read the other books in the series so I was coming into this without that background. The mystery was well done without the background, but the relationships between the characters was a touch confusing. At first, I thought Shell and Gary were a couple. I mean, they live in the same house and work together. Then I find out that she has a boyfriend, Josh, and Gary is just her bff. They used to work together on a hit TV show but now work in a pet shop. And Shell has three cats who help them solve mysteries. In this one, there’s a cat show competition going on and Shell has entered two of her cats. There’s a $25,000.00 grand prize and a special secret prize from a noted artist. So of course, there’s a murder and a theft.
It was obvious to me from the start that the two things were connected, though not everyone in the story thought so. And there are a lot of suspects. Shell and Gary go to work trying to solve the mystery. Who killed the two women? Who stole the special prize?
I especially loved the ending with the cat helping to take down the perp. Nicely done.
Recommended, but like most series, I suggest starting with the first one in the series first so you know who’s who and what the relationships are.

A fairly entertaining cosy murder mystery that I did enjoy but wanted a little... more?
I've read plenty by this author, and the previous one in this series and one of the things I really enjoyed was the crazy hijinks that the cats got up to. In a setting that is a cat show, with three cats owned by the main character, that should have been a given and yet while there was a fun start and of course, some crazy cat stuff near the end, the bulk of the story had them disappointingly well behaved.
I was also surprised by the lack of Josh, where is my grumpy cop? Don't get me wrong, Reiger is a fun mix up but I did miss Josh's exasperation at having to deal with his girlfriend and her bff.
There was a lot to like however, the mystery was good, I liked that there was some doubt for a while about if the two crimes were linked and I particularly enjoyed the build up to the death. Always fun to see the motives pile up in front of you rather than having people *tell* you about them after the crime.
I was fairly satisfied with the ending, who and how, and although there were some logic leaps, that's pretty much pair for the course with these types of books. I really liked the subplot of the actual cat show, I thought that played out really well, and again had a satisfying and good ending, it could have so easily gone the wrong way so that was great.
I will read more in this series, because I do enjoy it, but hopefully next time, the cats really come out to play.
~Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC in return for an honest review~
This was an entertaining murder mystery perfect for a drab weekend but I have to admit I found myself a little disappointed. Although I am new to this particular series, I have read a couple of books by this author so had a good idea of what I was getting into.
The setting is perfect - a cat show with a mystery donor, a specially designed grand prize, and a show director who seems to rub everyone up the wrong way. When she turns up dead, the biggest mystery is which one of the people who already dislike her could actually have been driven to murder. To find out, Shell and her business partner Gary begin sleuthing, all while running a business and having 2 cats competing in the show of course.
I enjoyed this - I liked that there was doubt around whether certain crimes were linked and which potential motive and suspect were the correct one. I also thought it was an unusual move that although Shell's partner is in law enforcement, his character was pretty absent - that was a nice touch. There were a few major logic leaps which turned out to be correct but were never explained which was annoying; and I found the dialogue a little conveniently revealing at points. However, definitely an entertaining read with a satisfying conclusion - and I will be back for the next one!
- Thanks you to NetGalley for granting me the ARC in exchange for an honest review -
Princess Fuzzypants here. Yes, the original Princess Fuzzypants from whom Toni has done such a grand job of recreating in the four books where I got to rollick with the very handsome Purrday and Kaluha. It has been so much fun and if you have not read the previous three titles, what is wrong with you? Just kidding but they are great adventures.
This time She’ll has us at a Cat Show. She wants to show Kaluha in the Siamese category and because I came to Shell as a stray, I do not have papers so I can only go into the Household Pets category. Harrumph! Anyone looking at me can tell I am a gorgeous ginger Maine Coon. Amidst all the kerfuffle of the actual competition, there is a murder and a theft. There are so many dead ends that She’ll and Gary are flummoxed. There appears to be good suspects and then they get exonerated or killed. Who knew cat shows were so cut-throat.
But amidst it all, we kitties save the day and do it with finesse and champion style. Don’t mind me if I purr and trill a bit. The story is that good and if you love kitties and a good mystery- even though I sniffed out the baddie right from the start- pick up this book. I give it five purrs and two paws up and wish there could have been more.
A Blue Ribbon Murder is the 6th book in the Urban Tails Pet Shop Mysteries by T.C. (Toni) LoTempio. Shell McMillan owns Urban Tails Pet Shop and her friend and co-owner Gary have a booth at a cat show. Shell has entered her Siamese Kahlua in the cat show. There is a huge cash prize and a secret prize for the winning cat. There is a general category for cats who aren't purebreds and Shell enters Princess Fuzzypants. Isobel, the organizer of the cat show ends up dead and there is no shortage of suspects. The secret prize is missing. There is a lot gossip about Isobel, her stepson Dennis, and many of the cat owners. Shell's boyfriend Josh is a Homicide Detective and is away at a meeting. He returns, stops by briefly and says he has to work all weekend doing paperwork - even though there are a couple of deaths. Not what I was expecting. The characters are likeable but there isn't much growth. It all seems the same as the other books. The cozy mystery was good and kept me guessing. I have enjoyed this series but I liked the other books more. I received an advance copy for free from NetGalley and Beyond The Page and I voluntarily leave this review. #ABlueRibbonMurder #UrbanTailsPetShopMysteries #NetGalley #BeyondThePage
Shell and her former TV co-star Gary were at their sleuthing best again and it was kinda like they never left their show. Except for this was real life with real perps and weapons. Gary always cracks me up with his sometimes-goofiness, but he’s a true friend and I love how he can remain a good pal to Shell but be a boyfriend to Shell’s bestie, Olivia.
Pet shows can always be a hotbed of drama and mystery, at least in cozy mysteries lol, so this cat show was no exception when the director of the show was murdered. Any number of people could’ve wanted the woman dead, so Shell and Gary put on their A-game of sleuthing again, and once more sweet Purrday was the hero. He probably liked sleuthing a lot better than having to compete in the show anyway! A one-eyed cat might not be show worthy, but Purrday always gets his perp!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by Beyond the Page via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.
I generally enjoy Ms. LoTempio's mysteries, especially the Nick and Nora books. I have read all the Urban Tails stories as well. I felt this book dragged out the plot a little too long, so I am giving it 3.5 stars.
Shell McMillan's mother is sponsoring a cat show in Fox Hollow, CT and encourages her daughter to enter her purebred Siamese, Kahlua, in the show. Apparently, the world of cat shows is quite cutthroat and a lot of the owners know, and don't like, each other. The show's organizer is also well known for her bad temperament and long list of enemies, so when she winds up dead, Shell pokes her nose to find out who killed her.
The story was engaging but as I said, the plot took far too long to get to whodunit and I was getting a little bored. Still a good cozy mystery.
Fox Hollow is holding a very important cat show with seriously impressive prizes. The stress levels are high for both the participants and the organising committee but when local pet shop owner Shell McMillan finds a body with a cat leash around its neck and the main prize missing the competition is thrown into chaos. With suspects everywhere, two of her own cats entered in different classes and only three days of competition left to solve both the murder and theft she definitely has her work cut out!
I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Beyond the Page Publishing, but the opinions expressed are my own. This was a fun read by a favourite author of mine, but not quite up to her usual standards. Looking forward to more. 3.5 rounded up to 4*
I sometimes wonder why these business owners don’t just get their P.I. license since they spend more time investigating than with their actual business. That said, there was a few mentions of Gary getting his, but not Shell. Then there is the fact that Josh was basically missing from this whole investigation, and it just felt like a filler novel to me.
The mystery itself was more than realistic. People go crazy over their pets (hello, it’s me!), and a special show with pure breeds as well as household pets, yeah its a setting for drama. There were plenty of suspects with plenty of motives. Speaking of drama, each cozy novel is paced with just the right amount.
I haven’t read all of these in order, but they also work as standalone mysteries. I think the most charming part of this series are the cats, and the setting for this installment did not disappont! I loved the setting of the cat show and all the characters (eccentric and not) involved.
The mystery was fun to follow, but I didn’t connect with Shell as a character so much. My absolute favorite are all her feline friends, and it was fun to see them involved at times throughout the book. The mystery took a lot of turns and wove several different themes together. Overall a fun read
Thank you to #NetGalley and #BeyondthePagePublishing for an ARC
An entertaining mystery set during a cat show where owners are over the top and the gossip vicious before the show even begins. When the organizer is murdered and the grand prize disappears during a light outage, Shell who has 2 cats in the show is determined to find out who the culprit is. But if she isn't careful, she may be the one killed by the competition.
A solid mystery with plenty of twists that will keep any cozy reader happy. The recurring characters are engaging and the cats are depicted with realistic personality and behaviors. I look forward to reading more in the series.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
When the head of a cat show is murdered, Shell finds herself knee deep in kitties and clues! Can she solve the case before a murderer slinks away or will the killer stop toying with Shell and just do away with her once and for all?
This is a fun series with a great group of kitties and characters. I absolutely love the trio of kitties and how they contribute to the plot. If you’re a cat lover, or not just a mystery lover, this one is for you!
Thank you so much to NetGalley and T. C. LoTempio for providing me with a complimentary digital ARC for A Blue Ribbon Murder. The honest opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I’ve read a few books by this author. I’m obsessed with cozy mysteries! Shell is a fun character. I love all the pets involved. I loved the story. I would check out more books by this author!
Absolutely fantastic from start to finish! It had so many twists and turns with so many suspects it had me wracking my brain trying to figure this one out! I totally enjoyed this mystery and I also love the "Nick and Nora" series.
You guys, I did it. I read a book… not listened to it. And what an enjoyable read it was.
There was a lot going on: murder, theft, talk of arson and poisoning, womanizing, the mob… the list goes on. And just about everyone was a suspect.
Shell does make a few questionable choices and puts herself into some potentially unsafe situations, but I never found myself yelling at her for being foolish like I do with so many female leads in cozy mysteries.
I felt like this book laid everything out really well. I had fun trying to piece the clues together in my mind and (good for me!) I solved the case just moments before Shell and Gary did.
Overall, I will definitely be checking out more books by LoTempio, especially the Urban Tails Pet Shop Mysteries.
Release date: March 31, 2026
Thank you NetGalley and T.C. LoTempio for allowing me an early look at this new release.
