Loved this second instalment of the Witchwolf series from Sam and Fawkes.
As always with this duo, there's plenty of humour sprinkled into the paranormal world building and it was great to see Dakota and Jax leaning heavily on each other when trouble comes calling at the pack's door.
No spoilers but I have to say I wasn't surprised by the actions of one person and I was pleasantly shocked by one of the minor sub-plots which sees Dakota pick up a ghostly ancestral straggler on his return from Japan.
Dakota's great great grandfather was a hoot as he turned from being a horrible species-ist wolf hater to helping him in the conflict which arises with Jax's old pack.
It's also a very steamy instalment as Dakota learns more about how to be both wolf and mage.

This is the 2nd book in the Witchwolf series and basically takes off where the first one ended.
Once they're back home from Japan, it doesn't take long for another challenge to arise for Jax and Dakota and their pack.
I have a feeling that the traitor will be back to cause more havoc.
And the 3rd book in this series looks interesting as well. Soon, I hope.

rounded up for Dakota, a terrific character

Moonmagic, the second of the Witchbook series by Sam Burns and W. M. Fawkes is a story I find a bit of a mixed bag. I really like the character of the witchwolf, Dakota, the Japanese mage, who found out about his tragic family history and the clan he was born into in the first book.
Dakota has a layers to his personality, depths given to him by the two cultures, the one he was raised in, the other he is tied to by family. And the powers of his own magic and now as a shifter. He’s continually trying to connect with the pack and work mentally through his inner struggles with his past. One of which appears here, in a new form. It’s a fantastic aspect of the story.
Dakota is a multicultural and layered character and when he is in the narrative, he elevates Moonmagic’s storylines beyond that of just a good story.
The issue comes in with his mate, Jax, the Alpha werewolf, and other main character. After much inner debate, the best word I could come up with for him that explains or sums up his character is ineffectual. Jax is supposed to be the head of a billionaire company, and Alpha of a pack of werewolves who separated from an abusive prior Alpha and left for a better life.
But that strong, powerful Alpha isn’t here. Instead Jax is a bit of an emotional mess. Doesn’t come off as all that intelligent and with the same fluctuating emotions as you would associate with a hormonal teenager. He doesn’t spot where the dangers are coming from to his company and pack, clear and simple dangers.
And when one traitor has been caught, after committing a heinous crime, he lets him go. Then after the fact, goes I should have torn him to pieces. Rawr. But I’m too nice.
SMH. He’s like this throughout the story. Had there been no Dakota this book would have been a DNF.
Spoilers. Dakota actually wins the day because he was both strong and smart, knows his mate is too nice *cough* weak to do what is necessary and uses his powers to help felicitate the right outcome.
Jax wins a fight by accident but he’s so sorry. Boohoo.
I do find the other pack more interesting. Could use more of them.
There’s a sample of the side story that has already been released. It’s fine but doesn’t have a lot of depth for one character, so it’s very uneven. Very much like this.
Read it if you’re fans of the authors or to finish the series.

Thank you so much to the author for the ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts. Spoiler-free review ahead:
I'm glad to have gotten the end of this story and seen its completion. I really enjoyed Dakota and Jax's story in Witchwolf about the same amount that I enjoyed this, and I liked being able to see these characters again.
I will admit, so much of the story is very, very repetitive. I feel like we hear about Jax leaving his old pack and why at least three separate times. Not to mention, it felt like almost every paragraph of inner monologue was followed up with a variation of; "Not because of this, but because of that" or "Not that I mean this, but that," or just some kind of constant justification of the characters' actions and words, as though assuring me as the reader that they weren't trying to be rude or insulting or offensive ever. And yes, I get it, these characters are good people, but I don't need all of their intentions spelled out so much just so I would believe they're good. Instead of creating humor or giving the characters a little bit more dimension or engaging dialogue, it felt like the chapters were just cluttered up with these endless (and needless) reassurances and... honestly, what felt like pandering to the reader, as though afraid the reader was going to get angry at a character for saying something that wasn't thoroughly explained from all angles. I'm sorry, truly, that's the only way I can put it that conveys how it felt reading that stuff.
I will also say, I love it when important lessons are conveyed in special, interesting, or meaningful ways, but it felt like with every Dakota chapter, we were just pausing the story so he could give these long preachy paragraphs that slowed everything down. There were just so many more interesting and engaging ways to convey everything he was saying, but it was just him talking AT another character the entire time, and I'm sorry, but I personally found it very boring and surface-level.
Finally, the business talk in this was just so uninteresting to me. It just all felt so corporate and boring, and I didn't understand why we were wasting time on it if it wasn't going to be interesting.
That's not to say this book was bad at all. In fact, I find myself even more frustrated because there were some fantastic one-liners, there were maybe... two jokes in the whole thing that made me laugh, I loved Jax's desire to protect Dakota, I loved the pack looking out for each other, and I loved a certain little side couple the most. I think these characters ARE genuinely good, and I think the storytelling has a LOT of great potential, it's just that I think the constant spelling it out dragged everything and slowed down what could've been a fun, romantic adventure. Still, I think plenty of people will love this book, especially to get more of the characters from the first, and for a quick read, I do think that for me, it was engaging just enough.

Moonmagic is the second book in the Witchwolf world and we're thrust into Japan right away with Dakota and Jax dealing with Dakota's blood relatives. Our time with them is short lived, but we learn not all of them at least have bad feelings towards werewolves so that's something.
Their return to the US comes with an unexpected, and unwanted ghost guest who has strong feelings against those like Jax and his pack and it's alluded to, but never outright said what exactly happened to make Dakota's other worldly companion feel the way they do.
As another reviewer said it feels like there's a lot of mental justification for the things they say and do, because you know... no one is allowed to have negative emotions or feelings? Everything must be justified and rational (even though emotions are highly irrational and unjustifiable at times) and it got a little tiring.
Then we throw in Jax's old pack and while some of them are amusing to handle most are not and there's no real depth to them, they're there just to be antagonistic more than anything it feels like. I'm going to start this by saying you have to read the first book in the series, WitchWolf, before you can read this one. This book cannot be read as a standalone!
This book picks up right where the first book left off with our two MC's in Japan negotiating with Dakota's birth family. From there though things quickly take a turn in a multitude of ways, from a pack member from Jax's past coming back brutally injured, to a challenge from Jax's old pack, a judgemental ghost, and a traitor, these characters have a lot to sort through.
This book had a lot going on, which I really liked! Even though there was a lot happening, everything was written in a clear and concise way. We got introduced to new characters in this book, along with meeting characters from Jax's past, both good and bad ones. Something that really stood out to me was how even when all of these horrible things were happening, Jax and Dakota's relationship never faltered. They were each other's lighthouse during the storm that was hitting their pack, and I thought that was really beautiful.
Now, I will say that not everything got answered or taken care of in this book. Specifically regarding a certain wolf who ended up being a traitor.. Hopefully Aleks with take care of him. And I am SO happy for Seth and Maia, the ending was so adorable!!! I can't wait to see where else this series goes next!

This is book 2 in this series and you must read Moon Witch first as it features Jax and Dakota. The story continues with Jax and Dakota off in Japan to meet Dakota’s family. With it being close to the full moon, Jax speaks with Dakota’s grandmother to be out in the country as Dakota needed to shift. When back in the U.S., Jax receives a message saying one of his old friend from their old pack. When he goes sees him, Cash was hurt really bad. They bring him back to get him healed. Also Dakota’s great great grandfather’s ghost came back with him. They also have the not great news that the new alpha of their old pack is there wanting to take over the Crescent pack. I loved the progression of the story and how they were able to overcame all. Cannot wait to read more in this world.

Moonmagic is the second book in the Witchwolf series. This series is ment to be read in order. We are back with Dakota and Jax for more of the story. In this book we get more challenges, action, and betrayal. I loved the moments between Dakota and Jax as they grow their relationship. I loved all the characters because they are so believable, even the bad ones. I loved the world building that went into this series. I hope we get more stories set in this world. I would definitely recommend this book and series as 5 star reads.

Must read book 1 before this one. There is no recap and you're thrust right into the story, so it's best read back to back (or if you have a good memory, then ignore this).
Hmmm not sure how I feel about the rest of the book. I enjoyed the first 10% when Jax and Dakota were in Japan, and I thought the whole book would actually take place there. Dakota's grandmother seemed interesting and helpful, which made me think there'd be more there, but after Dakota's first shift, they're already on the plane back to the US.
Dakota was awesome the rest of the book helping Jax, but I can't help but want them to have a plotline in Japan.

Continuing the story of the Crescent pack
This book is not just more about Dakota and Jax, but about the rest of the Crescent pack as well as some characters from the past. It’s a great follow up to Witchwolf and with the writing excellence of Sam Burns and W.M. Fawkes it kept me reading until I had finished the book (and ignoring everything I had planned to do today). It was compelling, exciting, sexy, funny and I loved the whole thing. I especially enjoyed the ghost of Dakota’s great, great grandfather who added a whole new dimension to the story.

Sam Burns and W.M. Fawkes have another winner in this series. It's often disappointing when there's a lack of continuity between books in a series. This is NOT the case with these two authors. Dakota and Jax's romance continues amid all sorts of conflicts, with old characters revisited and new ones introduced to the reader. I'm so looking forward to this story continuing, along with their plans to create new adventures in new domains, where I expect we'll get to know more about many of the characters we've already met, as well as completely new ones. Well done!

This brilliant page-turner was very exciting, with spice, suspense, humour, romance and non-stop action. I found the characters and the world building absolutely fascinating. I enjoyed the continuation of Jax and Dakota's story. The interactions with the ghost of Dakota's great-great-grandfather were quite humorous. There were some surprising revelations in the book and a lovely ending.

Overall, I enjoyed this second book although there were a few things that bothered me. Jax needed to quit with the pity party. Dude, not everything is your fault. It’s a good thing he’s got Dakota because that guy’s way more hardcore than the alpha. There were a number of inconsistencies that threw me and I hate when that happens. I did, however, love the great-great-grandfather ghost and the love story!

Love Dakota and Jax. Great, interesting plot, and memorable characters. Wish there were more books but very much looking forward to the Wildwood spinoff!
One gripe, which just so happens to be my main gripe against first person prose: "Dakota’s cheeks flushed, and I pulled him close, oblivious to the fact that his clothes were rough against my bare skin." You can't be oblivious to something AND also mention it. You could disregard it, but you can't be oblivious.

Great Sequel
This second installment is a definite must read for the first book in this series. The characters and plot bring a resolution to the many story threads, some of which originated in book one. Good character development for new characters, good supporting cast and solid continuity for the original characters. Ends on a good positive note, leaving a promise for the future.

Dakota and Jax! This pack is family through and through, the way a pack should be. Jax is almost too good to be true. He is a true leader even when his past catches up with him. I enjoyed reading this and these two handled everything the way we knew they would - together. And Dakota’s grandfather might not be so bad after all.

always love reading this duo’s books
Love getting to see Jax and Dakota get their HEA with all those loose ends wrapped up! Kosuke and Aleks and Cash are all characters I look forward to seeing more of, too! I do want to know what happens to the traitor, but maybe that will be dealt with in the next series.
Love getting to see Jax and Dakota get their HEA with all those loose ends wrapped up! Kosuke and Aleks and Cash are all characters I look forward to seeing more of, too! I do want to know what happens to the traitor, but maybe that will be dealt with in the next series.

Great continuation of Witchwolf. Just sad to say goodbye to Jax and Dakota. Would have loved more in this world with these two, but understand that another book is available Words, Nerds & Werecats so can’t wait to read this one. I am new to this author but so very impressed by the writing and of course the content

Jax and Dakota
Dakota is now learning about his magic and how to handle his family in Japan. They want him to take over the company and move there permanently, which is something that he just can’t do. Add to that the Wildwood pack is issuing a challenge and fighting dirty.
This was another incredible book! I loved this series. Highly Recommended

I am so glad we got this second book focused on Jax and Dakota. I enjoyed the quality time on their relationship, especially the intimate side. I will say though my favorite part here was the ghost relative. I can only imagine seeing one of my relatives as a ghost. Super original and fun.

3.5/5. I liked the first book better. This one just didn’t feel like it had its shit together, and like, same, but still. Idk. I feel like maybe I’m just in a funk at this point, and maybe nothing I say is valid anymore.

Again, great idea but not as well executed. I wish we saw more depth of the characters. Unfortunately, it was quite short and quick.
