What I got “ very high fantasy play with a corny back drop of Lucas being a owner of the lame ass green street group no one gave a single fuck abt and this taking up half the plot more than Quinn & Lucas relationship”

Look, I’m not surprised I didn’t like this book since I really hated the first two I didn’t really have high hopes for this one. I actually went in with a really low expectations. So I’m not to bummed

Look when an author constantly post in her Facebook group that she has to bleed every ounce of brain power or she is not that excited to write or that it’s taking all her energy to write a book that you’re waiting almost 9 years for …. Yeah your expectations go down some.

This just wasn’t what I was looking forward to tbh the entire series has been a let down so I’m not too surprised this one bummed me out sm bc I was so excited for it … but when the author isn’t excited or doesn’t like what they’re writing… yeah it’s gonna suck”

Did this need the girl obsessed trope since Quinn was obsessed all her life and didn’t seem to have a personality ? No

Did Quinn need to be a virgin waiting for Lucas her whole life and pen making that her entire personality? … no

Should the author have worked more on Quinn and Lucas relationship and build chemistry & tension between them instead of her ridiculous green street plotline??? Yeah probably alas like I’ve said before when the author isn’t excited or doesn’t care, it shows in the writing.

Also can I just pls say that’s it’s glaringly obvious deacon and his brother work for Jared and madoc & jax .. the author literally posted that spoiler by accident when she released falls boys … gee I wonder how they can be around all the time .. 🙄

What I'm excited for in this series:

1. Quinn and Lucas' love story

2. Dylan choosing Hunter ♥️ (ugh FOR ONCE, let the intense, quiet, broody guy (aka Hunter) get the girl! And not the mean, overbearing, bullying asshole dude (aka Kade) because quite frankly, that would just be like a remake of Bully and I've already read that book and tons more like it so I would pass if so. It would be so damn boring, predictable, and done-so-many-times if Dylan ended up with Kade 🙄 Besides, Hunter has that intensity and broodiness about him that you can’t help but find so damn hot! 🥵🔥 I totally fell for him in Next to Never and I am hella excited for him and Dylan to get it onnnn (and I would bet my curvy white ass it would be e.x.p.l.o.s.i.v.e. considering all of Hunter’s pent up energy 😏) and get their HEA 😍.
-- Yes, I will only read Dylan's/Hunter's book if they do end up together. If Dylan ends up with someone else (aka Kade) then sorry, but I shall pull an Ari and say, "thank u, next!". I've read a thousand other books wherein the heroine chooses the alphahole and this gal is looking for somethin' new k? thanks bye.

3. Hawke. He is a very interesting man and I want more of him. And I mean… a VIRGIN HERO who actually CARES about who he’s bangin’ and is oh so picky on where he’s sticking his patootie in?? UGH COME TO MAMA! My ovaries are so ready to explode for this man 🥵🔥

4. Someone who will knock Kade off his spoiled, arrogant ass -- NOT Dylan though; Dylan belongs to Hunter in my most humble opinion. Lol

5. The awesome family/friends dynamics that PD always seem to nail.

➛ продовження легенди міста про двох братів та мертву дівчину. це вже стає фішкою дуглас - пов'язувати серію якоюсь загадкою, історією з минулого, яка в кожній частині обростає деталями, новими твістами, починає активно впливати на сюжет і ця частина не виняток. усю повну історію ми, мабуть, дізнаємося в останній книзі, але епілог звучав зловісно і, зізнаюсь, трішки інтригує 😈
➛ нарешті дізнаємося усі таємниці лукаса, чому він поїхав. і охохо ми точно не знали, наскільки паганим хлопчиком і вже чоловіком він став 🌚
➛ камео тріо братів джаред-медок-джекс - то любов навіки 🥰 і нарешті вони від'їбуться від квін та дадуть їй дихати вільно, але це не точно 😅

із поганого:
➛ перша половина книги максимально нудна, де нічого не відбувається. цій історії не потрібно було аж 600+ сторінок. тут багацько часу займають неважливі події з усіма можливими персонажами з серії батьків та новими персонажами з попередніх двох книг. от хіба що тейт і джульєтту дуглас обділила, бо дівчата всього кілька слів сказали 🤪
якби я не знала усіх батьків, братів, дітей з інших серій і не любила їх, мені ну зовсім не цікаво було б усе це читати.
➛ було мало лукаса та квін, і розвитку їх лл ☹️ мені дуже імпонують ці двоє, їхні характери і зв'язок, але як тільки сюжет зосереджувався на цих моментах і я починала занурюватися в них двох, так з'являлися купа інших сюжетних гілок: розслідування старої легенди і вбивства (чи ні 🤫), ворожнеча з вестоном, історія з переслідувачем, розбірки з внутрішніми бандитськими ділішками, ревнощі, змагання, сімейні вечірки і драми. і усе це завжди з купою другорядних персонажів 🫣
дуже іронічно, що героям, які так люблять власну свободу, простір і самостійність, виділили так мало часу на двох у власній книзі. навіть під час сексу 😁

у висновку ця оцінка - за події в другій половині книги, за хоч якийсь замєс і екшн під кінець, за смішні камео братів, за цікаві гачечки на наступні книги, за вибухову суміш ноа+ферроу, за розгортання історії дікон-вінслет-манас, і за смачну випічку квін 🤤
а я б хотіла, щоб в першу чергу ця історія була про лукаса і квін 💔

p.s. ааааа і дайте мені книгу про ноа-коді-ферроу, або радше ноа-ферроу. такий потенціал і хімія 😮‍💨🤌 я хочу знати, що там між ними відбувається 😬😬

Quinn you’re a grown fucking woman with a rich family I’m not falling for your sob story. We don’t care. The woe is me shit look even more tone deaf and attention seeking next to Codi who has nothing.
Lucas you’re pathetic. Your whole schtick is entirely unmoving and boring. Even your possible murder plot didn’t make you interesting. LOOK WITHIN!

All this my brothers will be so angry shit only for Madoc to be the only one with a real reaction. Jase too but nobody cares what grandpa has to say (ily still 🫂)

They told me I was wrong about the noahfarrowcodi throuple and yet? I was fucking right. As Always. Highlight of the book btw. 10/10 no notes. Gay people we love you.
The one star is for them and for tommykade. Though small in appearance but fab nonetheless.
Winslet plot. I’ve seen enough. We can’t keep doing this, it’s stupid. Deacon and Manas you’re both nonces.

If slow burn means “we circle the same four thoughts for 200 pages,” then congratulations.
This was arson by scented candle.

I was promised age-gap tension.
Small-town surveillance.
Overprotective brothers.
A broody man returning with guilt and secrets.

What I got was prolonged hovering and a man thinking very hard about being conflicted.

Sir. Ignite something.

What Worked (I Guess)

The setting? Strong. I’ll give her that. The small-town summer vibe was there. Fireworks, cookouts, Night Ride energy, everyone watching Quinn like she’s a Fabergé egg.

Quinn wanting freedom? Valid. Relatable. I support women choosing chaos.

And on paper, the dynamic is delicious:
Older guy.
Protective history.
Guilt.
Repressed feelings.

The blueprint is elite.

The execution? Deeply underwhelming..

Where It Lost the Plot (and Me)

1. The Pacing Was on Dial-Up Internet

We circle the same emotional beats for what feels like an eternity:
• He shouldn’t want her.
• She wants independence.
• He’s watching.
• Everyone’s watching.
• He’s still watching.

Okay. We get it. The town has eyeballs.
If the first half of your book is tension-building, the tension needs to escalate. Instead, it hovered. For 200 pages..

I was not on edge.
I was checking my 'read' percentage.

2. The Age Gap Dynamic Needed Therapy

I don’t mind age gaps. I read monster romance recreationally. Let’s be serious.

But if you’re going to give me:
“I’m older.”
“You still need supervision.”
You need to unpack that power dynamic with precision.

Instead, Lucas’ internal conflict felt… undercooked. Protective without deep self-reckoning. Possessive without emotional vulnerability. Guilt mentioned, not excavated.

Sir, if you’re going to be broody and conflicted, at least spiral properly.

3. The Stakes? Inflated Balloon Energy

We’re told:
• There’s danger.
• There’s a motocross guy whispering.
• There’s a criminal watching.
• There are old enemies.

And yet somehow the tension never fully detonates.

Some plot beats felt dramatic for the sake of drama. Some resolutions felt too neat. A couple moments had me blinking like:
…that’s the decision we’re going with?

It started grounded and then edged toward soap opera without fully committing to the chaos.

If you’re going to be ridiculous, at least be unhinged.

4. Emotional Impact: Where?

Penelope Douglas usually makes me morally confused in the best way.

Here? I felt nothing extreme.
No obsession.
No devastation.
No “I need to talk about this immediately.”
Just vibes. And not even chaotic ones.

I wanted summer wildfire.
I got lukewarm barbecue smoke.

Final Thoughts

This book is aggressively underwhelming for what it could have been.

For a romance built on tension, secrecy, and power dynamics, it never fully committed to the intensity it promised.

And that’s the real crime.

Final Verdict

1.5 stars because I finished it.

But if you’re selling me:
• Age gap.
• Small-town royalty.
• Protective alpha.
• Circling rivals.
• Generational grudges.

You need to make me unwell.

I remained perfectly hydrated and emotionally stable.

Unacceptable.

Tropes and Vibes:

• Overprotective older brothers
• 12-year age gap
• Childhood proximity

(1.5) i just called the police. somebody broke into my car, didn’t steal anything, and left a copy of quiet ones by penelope douglas. this is a hate crime.

i’m in shock at how comically bad this was. we’re told quinn is quiet and shy (she’s not), fragile, an overprotected baby sister (to an unserious degree), and a secret freak (because and i quote, “it’s always the quiet ones”). her character begins and ends with lucas, who she’s been pining after since childhood. sprinkle in a bakery and that damn bike and you have quinn. and i could perhaps respect her obsession and dedication if only lucas morrow wasn’t a piece of cardboard personified.

broody and secretive are one thing; boring is another. randoms noah and farrow have more presence and charisma during their 15 minutes than lucas does in the entire book. how do you fuck that note up? even his big “i love you” as he’s being arrested rings hollow. tragic backstory and all, he remains so devoid of emotional depth that quinn’s lifelong devotion feels silly.

this couple is solely sustained by the age gap and taboo elements of their relationship. once you strip away the age play and constant reminders that she used to be a kid, there’s nothing there. nada. zilch. they’re doing this better on ao3.

we’re told they “see” each other because they both felt excluded growing up, but all we’re shown is physical attraction. the timeline doesn’t help either, since it’s all wrapped up in two weeks. there are no real conversations that build intimacy. no vulnerability. for a romance book, there is very little romance and a lot of cringe.

“tell me what you look like.” 
“just muscle, baby. i look like muscle right now.”

? man, just call everybody’s uber.

then there’s the overarching mystery. quinn and lucas needed a lot of groundwork to justify the hea because of their complicated history; instead they have to partake in these ghostbusting/gang shenanigans. when the reveal happens and her brothers find out, which is supposed to be their main obstacle, it is so anticlimactic and lazily resolved. it’s impossible to buy into the forbidden love trope when the family fallout is treated as an afterthought. penelope douglas, please stop wasting people’s time.

unfortunately, i will be picking up the next one because it’s the one i care about. tommy and kade are still my most anticipated couple, and the crumbs here were greatly appreciated. tommy isn’t boring, and kade is the undeniable standout in this series, which is already more than i can say for quinn and lucas. at this point, i don’t even need their book to be excellent. just slightly better than the first three and i’ll keep my foot off pd’s neck.

2.5! Knew after AroHawke and DylanHunter to lower my expectations and thank goodness I did because this was exactly what I expected and I enjoyed myself immensely. 😁

- QuinnLucas lovely. I loved their dynamic and they worked out pretty much how I wanted them to. Getting Quinns pov again was amazing I loved seeing her view on everything especially since it's been a few years since NTN. Lucas did surprise me a little but nothing too big I liked reading his chapters. His whole green street thing was so ridiculous you are NOT YOUNG! 😭 I say this to help you.
- TommyKade. They didn't have a lot of crumbs together but I loved all their moments. Tommy dying her tips red and her becoming more confident in this book like wow my girl is really growing up. 😭🧸 (Also her wearing normal, clean clothes incredible) Kade preppy blond prince of the world as always.
- Farrowcodinoah crumbs. 🧸 Actually can't believe we got solid moments of them I remember being delusional over them like 8 months ago. Ik PD hates writing this series but technically they wouldn't be *in* HB so maybe they'll get a book? I really hope so.
- Madoc pov THANK YOU PD!
- Aj was adorable and all the New Orleans mentions had me smiling.

One thing that I really didn't like is the short timeline like why is everything always unfolding in <2 weeks? Especially when ships like DH and QL have sm history it def takes away and makes the overall story progress weirdly at times. I'm guessing TK will follow the same thing and while I'd rather it didn't, I'm not going to expect anything else. Writing was also repetitive and plain bad at many times but that comes with the territory.

Also the murder mystery thing happening like nooobody cares. Manas and Deacon 2 idiots and Winslet shit a mess as always but it's obviously here to stay. This is life.

Going back to pretending PD doesn't exist while I wait for her next release. DallasCallum my misogynists I'll be seeing you this year! 1/6 down for now.

She watches me just as much as I watch her, and we’re both fucked.

You wanted me home but not too soon, otherwise you would’ve been too young. But not too late either, otherwise I might marry someone else. You were in a race to grow up.

I thrive on reading age gap romances. It's a personality at this point. So reading one where it isn't the entire plot was a welcome change. You get the forbidden aspect of it for a second but there's mystery entwined with it, then the tension from sneaking around starts just to end up laughing at their chaotic family dynamics—it was... a lot, but in the best way.

Did I feel let down by Lucas & Quinn's story after waiting for almost a decade? Honestly, no, I was not. The moment I learned that they would be part of the Hellbent series, I knew their story would be different from what I had once imagined for them. The mystery overshadowed their romance, but I think I already expected that after reading Falls Boys and Pirate Girls. In the end, the tropes didn't really matter to me. I just wanted to read about Lucas and Quinn because I had waited years to see them together and it finally happened. I couldn't ask for more. Did I settle for less though? Probably.

This isn't the kind of series you can skip the earlier books in and still expect to fully understand and enjoy. Hell, I read the first two books and was still left confused. So, no. It doesn't work that way. Hellbent has that unresolved mystery going on and won't be fully revealed until the series wraps up. You either commit to the whole ride, or you don't.

So, I mentioned in my comment in Pen's fb group about Farrow and Noah looking at Quinn and MOTHER just replied with "@Jackie Neither one of them were looking at Quinn.😉 But that's all I'm saying for now." Now color me goddamn surprised and speechless. I MEAN, WHAT THE HELL?!

QUINN AND LUCAS! It's age gap so that makes me even more excited. There's also that scene with Farrow and Noah looking at Quinn—for the love of God, please let us have Noah's book (Yes, that Noah from Credence) without him being in a love triangle or rectangle, or whatever really. Ugh.

I’ve waited all this long for a wtf-is-this-book is about?
it’s currently 3AM when I’m writing this down, so bear with me. below are some of the scenes that made me annoyed:

- Idk how many times Quinn is describing herself as “quiet” - spoiler, a lot.
- book 1 & 2 was so bad I’ve forgotten the extra characters, so who exactly Noah and Farrow are?
- at the gym scene with those 2 guys, Quinn started as annoyed that Dylan set her up and then straight to lying on his back while him doing push ups. I thought they were just introducing themselves? Quiet/shy one much?
- Mace and Codi coming to the bakery and Codi started working for her was unnecessary…? I think?
- the bakery scene where Quinn found the mirror was opened and her phone call with Lucas was a bit bland and she suddenly chasing his car with her bike. like why do we even need this scene?
- the whole Green Street was just confusing to me.
- at the party, the bounce house thing, what even is that? and what even happened there? Lucas giving her the pep talk how she’s better than going out with Noah and Farrow.
- and why suddenly Noah and Farrow is everywhere? who are they?? and Quinn suddenly ride on Farrow’s motorbike? uhh since when you’re so bold oh quiet ones?
- the whole carnival tower things and the journal/diary was just blearghhh. who wrote in their diary like that?

- the whole phone call with Quinn and Deacon.
- the whole house viewing and neighbouring with Farrow.
- Farrow needing Lucas to help him and saying he needs his too to win her trust back. when did Quinn lost his trust to Lucas?
- the birthday list and the block party.
- Lucas ripped her panties and the phone sex was so bland, no flavour at all. not even a pinch of salt.
- at another party, no I don’t know why Noah stopped Lucas from helping Quinn out
- and the rest of the book….

whyy Penelope….whyyyyyy……
you could’ve make this story simpler by just focusing on Quinn and Lucas love story but why adding up the unnecessary “legends” stuff that is not making sense to the story 😫😫😫
the 1&2 books are already bad, now even the 3rd??

Don’t get me wrong, I like the family atmosphere. I love Lucas’s jealousy and how provocative Quinn is with Noah and Farrow.

However, the suspense is boring (which is sad because I love suspense). I could skip all of that and still rate it well if it weren’t for the fact that Quinn is a virgin and has basically shaped her whole life since she was thirteen waiting for Lucas to come back. That’s so pathetic, and FMCs who crawl like that will always make me cringe. She admits several times that her life has revolved around getting Lucas. Okay, get him… but please don’t save yourself for him… Of course, he’s not a virgin. But that was already obvious; there’s a big age gap.

I also don’t like that she’s been wearing his hat all these years. Silly girl, seriously. Because of Lucas’s jealousy scenes I could give it 2 stars, but even then, he wasn’t as volatile as I’d expect from a jealous man.

I have thought plenty on whether I should be writing this review or not. I love Fall Away and I’ve been utterly excited for Quinn’s story ever since I’ve read Next to Never. This book, however, has been a total let down.

From the lackluster mystery and repetitive plot, to the almost-annoying amount of group scenes(which were necessary, I must admit, since I found the main characters to be subdued and rather dull), beginning to end, this book just kept on disappointing me.

Quinn’s character was completely unrealistic and contradictory. Our SELF-SUFFICIENT, SELF-RELIANT, SELF-SUSTANING heroine had her entire life dictated by her older brothers. Though her biggest(and only) tragedy was her lack of a love life and generally missing out on the fun activities that her friends and family were partaking in(which, of course, was entirely caused by voluntary self-exclusion), we don’t get to see Quinn making any real effort towards standing up to her brothers.

The only thing worse than an unlikeable character is a boring one. I wish I had something of significance to say about Lucas, but he has unfortunately been one of the most uninteresting characters I have ever read about. Not even the “murder” plot could save him from his utter dullness.

Another thing that I have noticed is that Penelope Douglas seems to have a fixed formula when writing age gap romances. And though similitudes are bound to exist, I found Quinn and Lucas’ dynamic to be a little too similar to Krisjen and Macon’s.

Unfortunately there’s not much to say about the plot either, the mystery sub-plots were far too uninteresting for me to keep up with them, despite my best efforts to stay invested.

Kade and Tommy, ESPECIALLY Tommy, have been the most fun and entertaining part of the book. I couldn’t(and still can’t) stop smiling at their crumbs. Whenever PD decides that it’s their time to shine, I’ll be here waiting.

The teasers were better than the actual story.

We have Quinn (h) who has been in love with Lucas (H) for 12 years since she’s a child. Lucas has never seen Quinn as more than a younger sister until his return 8 years later.

Quinn saves herself for Lucas while he hooks up with OW. (They were not in a relationship so it’s not cheating)

I had the hardest time believing how they fell in love. Lust? Yes. But in the romance department, they were lacking.

Not loving the 8-years long crush and total lack of experience (Quinn’s words, not mine!) from the teaser but I’m holding out hope. I did like that Lucas didn’t recognize her right away and he’s clearly gonna have competition from Deacon (but apparently not Farrow or Noah, as Pen recently confirmed). If you know PD, then you already know the heroine will use that to her advantage at some point lol.

All we know is: PD still has no plans for Noah’s own story, Farrow won’t be a main lead in any of the 6 books, and this book will NOT be releasing in 2024. However, I’m excited that it will be a summer romance AND age-gap! Also something about a “night ride” maybe because Quinn likes to run at night but her brothers don’t like that 👀

Penelope Douglas is THAT author for me. The one I forgive everything. EVERYTHING. Red flags? Fine. Questionable choices? I’ll allow it. But with Quiet Ones, I kept sitting there thinking… okay, but something isn’t fully clicking.

Lucas and Quinn were supposed to be that gut-wrenching, forbidden, aching slow burn. Eight years apart. Tension. Unspoken feelings. What we got? Two weeks on fast forward and more Green Street lore than actual conversations between them.

I was starving for their scenes. Every time they were finally alone together, it would cut short and we’d swing back to some old town legend that, respectfully, I did not need. Is this a love story or True Detective: Teen Edition?

And the pacing? Everything happening within two weeks felt wild. Lucas starts chasing too early. Quinn confesses too early. Eight years apart emotionally felt like eight days. Where was the weight of it? The longing? The “I can’t have you but I’m dying inside” energy?

And yes, I still read all 600 pages. Because I’m loyal like that. But this time loyalty felt more like endurance than euphoria.

The book isn’t bad. It absolutely held my attention. But it feels like the best possible version of this story was right there within reach… and we almost got it, just not fully.

And maybe that’s why it stings a little. Because Lucas and Quinn had the potential to be one of the strongest couples in this entire universe.

Penelope, I still love you. But this time? I needed more.
