Visions Of Ash

Rate this book
Ash should be saying yes. Her boyfriend of three years is fine and decent, he meets the basic requirements needed to most likely be a good husband, most likely. So why are her dreams haunted by memories of Sebastian, the first love who shattered her heart fifteen years ago? When she can’t bring herself to accept the proposal, Ash returns to the West Virginia hometown she swore she’d never see again, determined to find Sebastian and finally close that chapter for good.
Instead, one unexpected handshake at the Mothman Museum changes everything. Harker, a tall, androgenous, and impossible to ignore creature, makes Ash feel something she hasn’t felt in alive. In a town that never forgets and doesn’t easily accept change, Ash must confront her past, her identity, and the undeniable pull toward a woman who threatens to rewrite her future.
Harker, still reeling from the sudden death of one of the most important people in her life, never meant to fall for a passing tourist. But from the moment she meets Ash, her carefully built walls begin to crack. When the same nightmares that once plagued her six months ago return, Harker is forced to face a terrifying
Are the winged, crimson-eyed visions haunting her mind just grief…or a warning she can’t afford to ignore?
The omen has proven true before and this time, the life she might lose, may be worse than death itself.

Visions of Ash is a debut novella by Annamaria Veneziano. This short sapphic romance is a small-town insta-love story with supernatural elements. The main characters are obsessed with Mothman, and one claims to have seen him on the back roads of West Virginia.
The writing style is accessible and provides an easy-to-follow plot, including some nice atmospheric imagery. Some of my favorite parts were the eerie nighttime scenes involving the glowing red eyes.
I am not a big fan of insta-love, and I didn't realize this was the trope going in. The spicy scenes were nicely done, but I prefer more relationship build-up before that level of vulnerability. Lesbians and their 'U-hauling'... That being said, I did like the MCs individually and as a couple.
There was a slight twist that I saw coming, but I still liked the unique situation. There was also a supernatural twist that confused me a bit.
The take on the cryptid Mothman was different from anything I have read before, so that in itself added to the entertainment value.
I loved the homey setting of Janet's house, and she was a wonderful, nurturing character. Lisette and Beau are solid best-friend support systems for Ash and Harker, respectively.
There are some memorable lines, and another one of my favorite scenes—the bar fight—has a great one.

“I’m from Lowell, bitch! You southern fucks ain’t got nothing on me.”

This is Lisette's shout-out to Massachusetts, and I laughed out loud.
The ending is suspenseful, and the final chapter includes a time jump that acts as an epilogue.
Kudos for queer rep and cute dogs. Also, I really like the cover art.
Overall, it was a decent debut, and I would read more by this author.
I am rating this one 3.5, rounded up.

What a fun and wholesome read! A perfect book for Summerween. 🎃 If you love Mothman, queer awakenings, cute dogs, and a good love story then this is the book for you! The characters were easy to connect to and I had a great time watching them fall for each other. The added touches of suspense, plot twists, and spooky vibes were a cherry on top. Highly recommend to all my whimsical sapphics.

Perfect, simply perfect

I went into the book with no expectations. All I saw was that moth man appeared. I love Mothman. I loved the story, the characters, and how it played out. It was honestly spicier than I thought it was gonna be. It was a very pleasant surprise. Lol

Very cute story!

Cute story! I thought it was an interesting twist with the Mothman but had good character development and tied everything up in a nice bow at the end!
