Dare I say, Kent Holland’s best book yet!

Captain and the Comeback was a great read. While the characters were really good, like always, I think the best part of it was the story. Holland did such a fantastic job creating a beautiful and powerful story. Captain and the Comeback was a story of second chances and living life as authentically as possible, even when you don’t have everything figured out yet. It was a story of queer joy, hope, and integrity. Cort and Henri were the perfect characters for this story!

Sometimes the biggest comeback isn’t on the field… it’s figuring out who you really are.

I’m a little obsessed with Cort, honestly. I think I did a little squeal when this book hit my inbox.

One of my favourite things in a character arc is watching someone realise they have growing to do and Cort really gets that chance here. After the events of the first book, he’s forced to confront parts of himself he’s been avoiding for a long time, particularly around his sexuality and the ways faith and family expectations shaped how he saw himself.

Watching that shift, the understanding that he pushed parts of himself down, and the decision to actually do better especially when confronted with pressure (the media, his team and Henri) makes his journey incredibly satisfying.

I also really love how this series highlights friendship and the way chosen family can become such an important support system for queer people. And can we take a second to just enjoy the bi representation, without any negative or aggressive stereotyping. That was so amazing to see.

Overall, this is a great redemption and comeback story.

Thank you to Kent Holland for the ARC and the opportunity to read and review honestly.

omg I was not prepared for this book!! I was not prepared for Henri and I was definitely not prepared to love Cort so much after the first book.

Cort has grown, while I missed a part of his journey since this book takes place about a year and some months after the end of book 1 I in no way missed the hard work and discipline and the humility that Cort now operates from. And it sort of tugged at my heart strings. He felt dampened hesitant from the loud full of life boy in book 1 and that made me a bit sad. But he’s coming into his own and his growing pains while far more acute than the norm are his own and he definitely owns them. It gives him a grounded place as we see the story progress he finds himself and learns to accept himself. I loved and appreciated his turmoil around his faith and family and I think Holland handles that exceptionally well.

Henri also needed to grow and th author did not make it easy for him. But his character at it’s core is one with integrity and compassion and that serves him well in his journey.

These two are absolutely fantastic together, resistant of naming thier connection yet drawn closer and closer. Holland has a lovely way of writing sweet love, swoony love in a very realistic way. I wanted to spend more time with them

There are multiple plot lines, some suspense and mystery, a very satisfying comeuppance for LG and lovely found family.

If you’re craving a hockey romance with stellar character development and swoony romance read this book

Cort’s story arrived early on my Kindle, and I dropped EVERYTHING to read it.

You might know I love it when a character has some personal growth to do. When we got introduced to Cort in Beauty and the Basher, I just knew I wanted to know more about him and his backstory. I did miss a little more information about what happened between the situation in book one and this book, but apart from that, it was incredible to read how much he grows as a person.

And Henri… at first glance, I wasn’t sold on him. He feels like the kind of person who would do everything for his career, and I was proven right, until a certain point. Because deep down, he’s just a guy who wants to please the people around him and make sure everyone is happy and safe, to the point that he doesn’t realize he’s being used for his empathy.

What I love so much about this author is that the “drama” never involves the couple or their connection. It’s always the outside world that disturbs the peace and makes it hard for them to be together. And that’s exactly how I like my books. It makes you want to devour them until the very end and all the mystery and problems get solved

I can’t wait to see who’s next in line to get a story!

Thank you @kenthollandwrites for the digital copy to review!

Full disclosure, as soon as I finished Beauty and the Basher, I slid into Kent’s DMs saying how much I loved Cort and I hoped he’d get a redemption story. He told me to stay tuned and reader… he delivered.

This was *everything* I wanted for Cort. Being tested. Learning from his mistakes. Growth. A beautiful journey of discovery for his sexuality. Realizing he pushed it down due to faith? Been there bb.

And Henri! That sweet boy. Just trying his best to not ruffle any feathers and he fell for Cort just as hard as Cort fell for him. Y’all. That locker room scene? 👀👀👀Their first kiss 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨 I was dyingggg inside. So cute and hot!! And they were so good together and for each other. And the spice didn’t let me down!!!

Their relationship growth was so good. I loved seeing Cort and Henri work on themselves individually and by the end I was squealing. Also loved seeing Bash!

My love for this book can be summed up in one quote: “You are learning about love, and if you have really found someone that you love, then that is nothing to be ashamed of. Love him, and let him love you, and it is up to them to see that love or not. If they see it, that is good for them. I pity the people who look at two people in love and cannot see it for the beauty that it is.”

So yeah… read this!!! So good.

This book is everything I wanted from the second book in this series. Cort was a character I wanted to learn more about, and I knew he would return in this series to discuss his sexuality. I was feeling it. I love seeing that Cort, with the problems in the first book, got the chance to understand he could be a better person in a new place. I really like how this series has been talking about friendships and how important they are for so many queer individuals. I wish I had gotten more parts with Jack, but I think this can be the story for the next books.

Kent did it again with this series! The story and love the characters share is one that kept me wanting more! He had a real understanding of how to weave love into a high stakes story. I loved that we got a continuation of Cort’s story and made him one of the main focuses because I felt like his story wasn’t fully over after being a side character in the first novel. It was well thought out and the plotting made sense! If you are looking for another hockey romance series, I’d strongly recommend give the Frostbitten books a go!

Wouldn’t have thought that I liked a redemption story for Cort so much but I did.

It was again a great mix of story and feelings and bedroom things.

Still love how Kent Holland approaches conflict in his books. I feel even when things get heated that the lines of communication and accountability stay open. It’s refreshing.

This is a great book and probably one of my favorites of Kent's books. Loved the characters, loved the story line. I read it in two sittings.
If you like MM romance, and in particular MM romance hockey this one is worth a read. And I would read the one prior to this one bc it is also very good.

‼️Not Safe

Maybe it’s just me but I’m literally sick of having to read on page scenes of MMC with other people, especially where they don’t add anything to the plot😡.

Here, Henri, who is very attracted to Cort and had many interactions with, invites Cort to ditch a party and go skate and play some hockey just the two of them. They bond and have fun and joke around and they steal glances in the shower. The moment Henry leaves Cort like he didnt even step out of the building yet, he he texts Zach, a fuck buddy of his, and goes to his flat where we are being told how they are kissing and sucking and jerking each other and Zach biting and slapping Henri’s ass the way Henri likes it. Then we are told how Zach is f*cking Henri roughly with one hand pressing againg Henri’s throat, and how they are coming together.
Oh and at the end of that we are told that Henri reflected that “though he had thoroughly enjoyed getting fucked by Zach, his mind kept going back to Cort.” Yeah right okay 🙄🙄 Let’s all thank Henri for at least thinking of Cort while being f*cked by another guy🙄🙄🙄 (btw this scene happens at 30%).

The said scene soured my mood🤢. On top of that, I didn’t feel chemistry between Henri and Cort. I skimmed the second half of the book .I didn’t connect with the story at all. All of the sudden they were in love but drama was happening around them.

A great redemption/comeback story. If you’re looking for something light hearted but still spicy, this is for you. There’s a perfect amount of drama in the story outside of the main relationship and watching Cort & Henri navigate that was endearing. I’m a big fan of how Kent Holland writes love confessions.
