When a billionaire’s assistant drops dead clutching a cup from Brewed Awakening, Hattie Calder’s cozy coffee shop becomes the scene of Maplewood’s biggest scandal.
A friendly note on the cup—her signature smiley and heart—turns from charm to evidence overnight, painting her as the town’s prime suspect.
Determined to clear her name, Hattie follows a trail of gossip, greed, and poisoned secrets to the doors of Maplewood Manor, where eccentric tycoon Graham Larken offers her an impossible help solve his assistant’s murder, and earn ten million dollars in the process.
With her sarcastic sister Sam, tech-savvy best friend Liam, and her loyal cat Beans, Hattie dives headfirst into a maze of motives—conniving small town players, bitter heirs, and one very unlikable victim. Every clue brews more suspicion, and every red herring moves the pieces closer to home.
As lies unravel and loyalties are tested, Hattie learns that justice—like coffee—is best served strong.
And in Maplewood, the truth always leaves a bitter aftertaste.
This is a first book from this author from me. I can guarantee that I will be reading more of her books. She makes the characters mostly likable. In this one, Hattie is doing well with her coffee shop until they find a dead body right on the door step! Naturally Hattie becomes the main suspect so she and her friends jump in to solve the murder. She follows gossip to Maplewood Manor where she meets with the gtizzled tycoon, who offers her a whopping tem million dollars to solve the crime. Now she has an added incentive to get this solved as quickly as she can.
Does she get the money? You will have to read the book to find out.
I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest opinion.
Maplewood Manor is a highly recommended cosy mystery, offering a truly enjoyable experience perfect for a quick read, especially for fans of the series.
The plot centres on coffee shop owners Hattie and Sam Calder. When a customer dies shortly after leaving their shop, the sisters, aided by Hattie's intelligent cat, Beans and their tech-savvy friend Liam, become drawn into the investigation. While Sheriff Sutton is the official lead, this amateur sleuthing team conducts its own probe into the mysterious death, which is full of engaging twists and clues. Can they untangle the web of evidence and unmask the killer?
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Well, I made the mistake of realizing that this book has only a few reviews. I just looked at the stars and assumed it would be good. Then I made the other mistake of listening to an AI Audio version of this. Ok, for real this time. No more AI books. Perhaps this would have been better in paper form. Also, the whole mystery is built around chess pieces and movements. I know nothing about chess. What did I even read? The AI made it difficult to pay attention to this story. Can't say I'd read the rest of the series.
I enjoyed the story. It was full of twists, turns, and red herrings. Hattie and the crew from her coffee shop feel they have no choice but to investigate when a regular customer is murdered and the evidence keeps pointing back at Hattie. There were several chapters that had redundancies in action indicating that the editing was not what it could have been.
The murder didn't occur at the manor but it did have something to do with it. Hattie was pulled into the situation because the body had one of her signature cups and a personal note on it. Through danger and the whole town believing she was guilty, Hattie pieces the puzzle together with help of Sam and Liam. Twists, turns and second guessing makes you sit on the edge of your seat. Will the threats ever truly be gone in her small town community?
