Misty has few expectations from life. Work, read, sleep. But when she hears from a complete stranger that she's actually a powerful, shape-shifting werewolf, her life changes forever.
Lindon believes he already had his shot at love long ago. And lost it. The tall, blond, sexy shifter is now only trying to keep his promise to his father by protecting Misty as she learns about her new place in the world and seeks to find a future mate.
The only problem: she'll be meeting all of her prospective suitors at one time, and in one place. All TEN of them. All hot, single, alpha males competing for her heart. * - *
Author's Note! Alpha Contenderis a fun, paranormal romance serial about one BBW finding out she's an alpha female, and trying to deal with the ten alphas trying to compete to win her. Each segment is novella length with a cliff-hanger, and I try to price so that by the end you've only paid for one book (99 cents for each part, or available free through Kindle Unlimited).
Terry is the author of over forty bestselling shifter romances. She spends her spare time dreaming of dragons, playing with her pets, and watching sunsets from her home in the mountains alongside her husband (who she suspects would make a great bear shifter). She loves the wild outdoors, her fans, all readers, and getting lost in a great book.

"So, what if I told you that there were men much hotter than the man in that book, men who look like me, but younger, more virile. What if I told you that if you came with me right now, you have men like that fighting over you, and you'd have your pick of them?"
That's not my typo, it's in the book. ANYWAY. I am torn on how to rate this. On one hand, it's one of the silliest and stupidest books I've ever read. On the other hand, there were times when the author seems to realize this and laugh at herself with startling clarity.
Misty is a fat, 28-year-old virgin. She loves doughnuts and romance novels. She works as a waitress. One day, a silverhaired foxy man appears and tells her she's a long-lost female alpha wolf. Why doesn't she come with him and he'll take her to mansion where 10 alpha wolves will compete to win her hand?
Yeah. Just read that paragraph again. See what I mean? Let's break it down:
1.) FAT FAT FAT Okay, I love fat heroines, but I'm rather put off by the fact that the author is being a little too liberal with her stereotypes. She loves doughnuts? She loves romance novels? She uses doughnuts as bookmarks in her romance novels? Come on. One, no one who loves books would ever use a doughnut as a bookmark! Two, I hate doughnuts. (Well, I guess this is just a personal issue. LOL) Three, she's a 28-year-old virgin. Listen.... I don't know where this is taking place, but I find that highly unlikely. I am rather baffled by this persistent idea in books, television, movies etc. that fat women get no play. It makes me go o.O. Almost every single fat woman I know is married, in a relationship, or dating. Do you think fat women aren't having sex? I am confused as to people who seem to think this is just a fact of life. Do people think that as soon as you are a size 12 or higher that magically, suddenly men are repulsed by you? Also, I know this never occurs to anyone, but few men in real life are "perfect" physical specimens either.
It's insinuated - but not stated outright - that she's never been kissed, either. I'm sorry, that's harder for me to believe than werewolves existing. o.O
2.) "PERFECT" MEN It's also really pissing me off that all the men presented in these romance novels are all the same. Tall, six-pack abs, stunning good looks, athletic prowess. Am I the only one who is turned on by more... average men? I'd take a mono-ab over a six-pack any day. And I love guys who are a little heavy. I also don't understand the recent need for men to be completely hairless. Again, I don't really know the norm, but I can tell you that NOT A SINGLE MAN I've ever been with has a completely hairless chest.
3.) 10 MEN I'm sorry, but I can't keep 10 men straight in my mind. This is too many love interests. Please par it down. To five or less. About 6 of them were completely personality-less and kind of merged together in my mind.
4.) NOT EROTICA I want to stress that this is a romance book and not erotica. There is nothing heavier than kissing until the book is nearly over. Don't read this expecting a lot of sex.
5.) KISSING But there is a lot of kissing! KISSING. I love kissing. However, I think Bolryder could've done a more descriptive job. But I still enjoyed it. KISSING!!!!!
6.) SEX The sex is uninspiring. It will not turn you on. It is perfunctory and short. Also, I found Misty's ability to orgasm at the slightest touch very annoying. And unrealistic. Fail.
7.) THE LEAD BOYFRIEND The main man, the lead who Misty ends up with, is an overbearing asshole. I can't stand his snide, rude remarks. Also, he's played as a man who "has to be in control in bed." How weak can you be? What good is a man to me if he always has to be on top? In control? Dominant? That's no fun. Any man who has only one single mode in bed with no room for compromise is, in my mind, a complete waste of time. Not to mention that he takes her virginity while she's tied to the bed!!!! What is WRONG with you? For goodness sake. He often treats her like a child, condescends to her, locks her up 'for her own good,' hides things from her,... I could go on. He praises her with "good girl," which is reason enough by itself to scratch his eyes out. And yet again with the hand-feeding! Please don't hand-feed people who are over the age of two. You can do maybe ONE BITE and if you leave it at that I will forgive you. But it is emphatically not sexy to sit and hand-feed a woman an entire meal. It's infantilizing.
I know everyone loves 'alpha males,' but you can count me out.
8.) PLOT The plot is beyond stupid. I mean, really, really dumb. Even for a romance novel. You know that if I'M saying that, then the book has a real problem, right? I am extra-gentle grading romance. So me even mentioning this means it's extreme.
9.) THERE WERE PARTS I LIKED Mostly when Misty was being introspective, or philosophical.
I rest my chin on my fist. I'm not offended at Rafe's words about being selfish and coming for the men. I am selfish. I've had to be. I'm the only one looking out for me, if I don't, who will? I can't trust anyone else to take care of me, and it doesn't make me bitter. So I just ignore people who seem to take issue with my form of independence.
She's also really funny sometimes:
"Right, a man who wants me to do as he says? What a novel idea in your world," I say sarcastically.
"It's for your own safety," he says.
"Said the patriarchy," I retort.
I LOLed at that one.
10.) SCENTS I loved how each man had his own unique scent which made it easy for Misty to tell where they were and who had been where. And I loved Bolryder's descriptions of the scents. This whole theme was good and interesting.
11.) DEEP-SKINNED The author uses this term a lot. I think she means dark-skinned. If someone's black, just tell me they're black. No need to beat around the bush, especially with vague terms that are impossible to understand.
12.) NO NOOKIE AND NO COOKIE And I am furious that this is a flippin' "you can't have sex with anyone, because once you have sex with a male, he's your mate for life" trope. HATE. No fun? No experimenting? No chance to explore her options? She's relegated to merely kissing. THIS IS BULLSHIT. I like my heroines free to choose whether to have sex or not depending on whether they want to or not, not some kind of constraint that forces them to be celibate until marriage. This made me rabid.
13.) ALL THE MEN ARE PRETTY MUCH VAPID IDIOTS Examples: When asked what the best thing about him is, Thor lifts up his shirt to display his six-pack.
Seriously? If that's your best asset, you are in real trouble.
And when she asks each man what their favorite book is, she gets these complete bullshit answers. She doesn't even call them on it or ask follow-up questions. "She's a voracious reader", my ass!
What's your biggest weakness? "I'm too strong. And I always win everything."
Are you kidding me?!!?!? How is this heroine's eyes not rolling right out of her head?
This goes on and on and on, leaving the reader convinced she's doomed to have a moron as a mate.
14.) HIDDEN TREASURES There were some good characters. I loved Fifi and Matt. So there was some redeeming aspects to the roster of love interests. However, these two are the ones she has close to zero sexual interest in, so take that as you will.
Tl;dr - One of the stupidest books I've ever read. I can see what Bolryder is trying to do... but it's not successful.
Misty finds out she's a female werewolf and an alpha. But then she's told that she's in high demand and she needs to choose to mate between 10 alpha males that are coming to try and win her over. The only problem is that while she doesn't mind the attention of the other males, she really only wants the attention of Lindon.
Lindon was a jerk to Misty when he first met her because he didn't know exactly who she was. She's held it against him for a while because he was a jerk and he doesn't seem to want the attention he knows she's wanting to give to him because she's attracted to him more than any of the others.
After all the alpha's show up at the mansion and start to get to know her, Lindon finds it harder and harder only to be her protector. He finds himself getting jealous when she kisses one of the other men or when they touch her. He starts to realize that he feels something for her and keeps fighting his feelings for her even though she really likes him more than the others.
During all this getting to know everyone there's something dangerous taking place behind the scenes and we don't get to know about it until near the end. I won't give too much away but Misty should have been told. When that part of the story unfolds, I was shocked because I thought I knew what was going on and I was wrong. It was a good twist and it also brought Misty and Lindon closer which was nice. I was getting tired of him constantly giving her mixed signals but he had some stuff to work through.
This had previously been several shorter books in a series but I read them all at once in a boxed set and really think they should have been one larger book to begin with. If you're going to read this series make sure to get the boxed set.
Really good but I would have given it 5 starts if Terry Bolryder hadn't split this up into a series. Splitting it up into a series made feel rushed and therefore made it seem less believable. But overall it was worth the read. A word to authors, please stop splitting really good stories into short series and selling them separately. You all are really ruining some really good books. Overall worth the read.
It's such a pleasure to be able to read a book without waiting for the next one months later especially if it's good. I think I enjoyed it even more knowing I was safe with the knowledge that my happy ending was coming on my term I'm looking forward for more books!
I'm so happy I came across Mrs. Bolryder! Her attention to detail is amazing and inclusion of every character is perfectly balanced with the development of the story. You won't be disappointed!
Now that's a story. Strong characters, great storyline. No cliffhangers. Loved the way this goes from one to the other. I just love reading the whole story, from beginning to finish. Having all situations of the background thru what is happening just out there great read..
Loved reading about an average girl getting the hot one? And a shifter at that.... You go girl! Quick easy read, loved all the contenders... Will there be anything in the near future about Matt?
The werewolf version of the Bachelorette without the audience. Just ten hot males who are hot for her body and want her for their mate. Make that eleven. Lindon is supposed to be the referee protector of the competition. He's not supposed to want her--he's had his chance at love and lost her.
So he keeps telling himself and Misty. His body just isn't convinced.
Men/wolves--heavy on the wolves--are out to win her over. She's always been the one teased or ignored in her human life. However she isn't human and is now in a new world--a true innocent--having to choose her life mate from ten guys who all want to eat her up in the best possible way. Who would have thought having ten hot men to chose from could be so exhausting?
The story continues with four exciting segments, each one will leave you anxious for the next--and the great thing with a boxed set is you don't have to wait just keep reading. And for this price you can't let this one escape.
Loved this book and what story line. What a ride of emotions, with so many twists and turns, and hot alphas too? The series and the price for the box set was great. I loved a series that makes me laugh, cry, and just didn't want to put it down. Very highly recommended and hope to more about the alphas mention in the story.
I read this set individually, but ended up having to have it all together, too. I lived it, and found it very immersive!! So much depth to the scenes, the characters were very memorable, even after you got to the end. Terry Bolryder knows how to,write, and keeps her readers hooked from book to book!! Very well worth reading!!!
Misty is a big, beautiful woman who feels like her life has always been lacking something. She’s always felt restless, and now she’s discovering why. Her inner-wolf is about to emerge, and her life is going to change forever.
THE BLURB
Misty has always found her life lacking something. She never really fits in. Then one day a complete stranger tracks her down and explains why: she’s a powerful, shape-shifting werewolf that’s on the cusp of her transformation.
Lindon believes he already had his change at love long ago, and lost it. Now he’s trying to keep his promise to his father and pack to protect Misty as she learns about their species and finds herself a future mate. Simple, right?
Problem is that Misty is meeting all her prospective suitors at one time, and in one place. All TEN of them. All hot, single, alpha males competing for her heart.
TONE OF THE BOOK
Alpha Contender falls within a lighthearted tone. The entire story is written with the premise of being an adventure. There is regular fun banter between the characters and most characters don’t dwell on their problems.
SENSITIVE TOPICS
Alpha Contender book is aimed at mature readers. There are a variety of sexual scenes throughout the novel.
Some readers may or may not appreciate the heroine being a big, beautiful woman (BBW). It’s a niche genre in romance, and unfortunately most romance authors either portray stick-thin model like characters, or much larger girls.
There are also a few scenes of violence.
SERIES SYNOPSIS
Alpha Contender was originally released as a four-part serial. It can be purchased separately or as one book in a “boxed set”. This review is for the boxed set, acting as one full novel.
The novel, with all its parts, is 370 pages long. It’s slightly longer than your average romance novel (at 300 pages). Alpha Contender is slow to start, but once the plot begins to move it comes addictive. Each part, or book act, finishes with a cliffhanger that leaves you wanting to know what happens next. The full serial adventure ends in a happily ever after, with no cliffhangers.
REVIEW
I had trouble connecting with the main character Misty. Her every action seemed to be in spite of other people’s well-intentioned advice. I found there was too little emotional character development for Misty to be satisfied. She consistently jumped from naive to forceful, and regularly made rash decisions. I understand that Terry Bolryder was trying to portray a strong female “alpha” personality that’s also haunted by her own lack of self-esteem, but the character became somewhat unlikable for me. She acted too selfishly, all the time.
Despite my lack of love for the main heroine, Terry Bolryder did an excellent job writing the other characters. The hero Lindon goes through a wonderful character growth that highlights his vulnerabilities and strengths. The numerous side characters are all unique with their own personalities that invite you to learn more about them. The biggest issue you’ll have as a reader is trying to keep track of all the different characters.
FINAL WORD
I had a love hate relationship with Alpha Contender. I disliked the heroine, but loved the other characters. If you are after an erotica novel with plenty of foreplay and a reverse Harem theme then you may appreciate Alpha Contender.
RECOMMENDED BOOKS AND AUTHORS
Alpha Contender is closely followed by another romance novel by Terry Bolryder, Alpha Defender. This story focuses on side-characters from Alpha Contender.
If you like Terry Bolryder’s writing you may enjoy her more popular series Awakened Dragons, starting with the novel Onyx Dragon.
If you enjoy reverse harem books than consider The Temptation of Snow by Alana Albertson and Lisa London. It’s about a woman fleeing her life and living in the North Pole, finding herself surrounded by seven Navy Seals.
If you are after Alpha-male style romance novels, Milana Jacks has a number of series that might interest you. Her most popular series Beast Mates is a dystopian paranormal romance with alien werewolf-like creatures called the Beasts who have settled on Earth. The aliens have an agreement with humans living in the Communities. It is called the Pairing Program. The Pairing Program allows them to buy their pairs who are actually their mates.
I'm so disappointed in one of my favorite authors. Don't get me wrong, this book is funny and sensitive as all get out therefore the four stars. Would've been five, but when authors are just following the selling-fads of the industry, you're not being true to your craft or fair to the readers. Following fads are forcing us to read the same book over and over again and then we start to do the one things authors hate; compare authors, choose the best cookie cutter producer, and only read their books. So, I guess it's only fair to say what trend this story is portraying; aggressive, desperate women that can't take no for an answer. It's slightly nauseating after the twentieth time I've encountered this sort of character mimicked by different authors. My fun for reading is diminishing with each book I pick up lately. I don't think I'll read anything else for fear of getting another cookie cutter plot such as this one or the newest favorite; a bully romance. Stop this before you start to lose more readers, authors. IJS
I’m going to have to say I’m not overly taken with these 4. They’re not awful, but they aren’t her better works either.
I seem to have been reading her non-dragon shifter books out of order and finding these ones explained some character references in the Wolf Protectors set. But I found myself skipping over chunks of these. The h +h just seemed to keep going in circles of stupid.
My biggest problem with them though was they were written mostly in first person, but would change to second or third as well. I had a heck of a time trying to follow along at times, and they just weren’t that good for me to be bothered trying to keep track.
I have had this box set in my "to read" section for a while so thought i would give it a go.
I found the story a bit slow and repetitive, so much so i found myself skipping sections.
Misty, the main character annoyed me so i could not warm to her at all. She was supposed to be 28 (i think) but she felt more like late teens early twenties. I realise she was naive and lacked confidence but please......the whole concept was silly, even the male alphas were uninteresting and seemed very young........maybe it is me and i am too old :)
The interaction between the characters was smooth and there was a few laughs along the way.
Having said all that, this was a very easy read and i did finish it. The story is complete with no cliff-hanger, also a plus.
I thoroughly enjoyed Book One. The plot was interesting and original. It was evident from early in the story who Misty’s chosen mate was. So to go through 10 other suitors; all with their own personalities and baggage, was tedious. After completing Book One, the other books seemed to have the same theme; just with different suitors vying for Misty”s attention. It just seemed too drawn out for me. As a result, I started to lose interest and just skipped to the ending, which confirmed who Misty’s chosen mate was. In summary, I really enjoyed reading this book; it just needed to be a bit shorter.
Since I was not a fan of the Bachelorette this was a difficult story for me to get into. I gave myself headaches with the eye rolling. But I persevered. I had the need to finish this because it is referenced in future stories. In spite of the juvenile antics of these idiots, this eventually became an entertaining read. Once we got away from the Bachelorette crab and got to the action portion of the story, I couldn't put it down. It answered a few of my questions and gave me a little more background. Overall, glad I read this, eye rolls and all.
There is a lot of angst and alpha posturing in this cute love story. A woman, Misty, finds out that she is not only a wolf shifter but also a greatly desired alpha female. With Lindon assigned as her protector she is set up to get to know ten alpha males who will try to win her, or at least mate with her. While Misty doesn't mind all this attention from such hunky males, she seems to only really care about impressing one, Lindon. Unfortunately, Lindon is consistently inconsistent with his attention. Something happened in his past that is keeping him from participating in the love games and Misty is determined to find out what it is and overcome it. It is all fun and games until someone tries to kill her and she finds out Lindon had been keeping more than one secret.
The boxed set is perfect to read through. Misty discovers she has been lost to a world of paranormals - shifter wolves. With it she also finds out she is a prize that gorgeous men will fight for, 10 to be exact. She learns many things along the way but her heart only wants one. The one is her protector that lives in the past vs looking for a future. The story heats up and a mystery needs to be solved before misty gets hurt. Love the characters and I love this world terry has created.
Of the three brothers Lindon confused me the most. While he appeared to be sensitive in Rafe and Aspen’s story, he came across as, on the surface, a real pain in the butt. How he reacts to Misty at first introduction made me want to hit him upside the head. Then his story begins to unfold. With intrigue, ten hot males to choose from and a confusing protector, Misty is overwhelmed. I couldn’t put it down!
Dont read this book! I'll get straight to it this is a terrible book. It didnt make sense there was a lot of description of unnecessary things. She was insecure throughout the whole book because she was fat this box set was terrible save time effort and money dont read it if you like shifter romances read theodora taylor I dont work for her but she has great books just saying.
This is the 1st book I've read from this author, and color me delighted and ready for more!. Lonely book nerd Misty one day learns she's a female alpha wolf shifter and is given the chance to have 9 sexy alpha male shifters fight to make her their mate. Who will she choose? One of the nine sent to win her hand or the one shifter sent to protect her, who claims to want nothing to do with mating her, yet can't stay away!
This set was just okay for me. There was such a focus on perfect male bodies that it made the heroine seems shallow. I found myself rolling my eyes and skimming through the details of abs, chiseled faces, and hard bodies. I stuck with the story until the very end cause I wanted to know which guy was out to get Misty. Theere was adult langage and scenes. 2.5 stars
She just found out she's an alpha female. She has to choose between several alpha males, but the alpha male she wants isn't a contender. He is only there to protect her and says he already was fated but she died. Truth comes to light when he realizes his heart wants her more than he realized.
Alpha Contender Boxed Set by Terry Bolryder. Brilliant writing as usual. A girl who thinks she normal is taken out of her ordinary life to be told she is a very Rare Alpha Wolf Shifter. She agrees to meet 10 Alpha Wolfs to see which one is her mate. Oh the person who killed her parents is after her as well. To kill her.
