The Handsome Stranger by B.P. Walter was such an addictive read from start to finish. It’s one of those psychological thrillers where you just can’t put it down because every chapter ends on a cliffhanger that makes you say “just one more” until suddenly you’ve read far too many chapters in one sitting.
The plot is really well constructed and full of twists, turns, and constant uncertainty. I genuinely never felt like I knew exactly where the story was heading, and that’s what made it so gripping. Just when you think you’ve got a handle on what’s going on, everything shifts again and you’re left rethinking everything. It’s clever, tightly written, and everything links together in a way that feels satisfying but still keeps you guessing right up until the end.
The characters are really well developed and believable, especially the mysterious “handsome stranger” himself. He’s written in such a way that you’re never quite sure whether to trust him or not, which adds so much tension to the story. The other characters also feel very real, with their own flaws, secrets, and motivations that make their choices feel authentic rather than forced. I found myself constantly questioning everyone’s intentions, which made the reading experience even more engaging.
B.P. Walter’s writing style is very easy to get into but still really effective. It’s clear and fast-paced, which works perfectly for this kind of thriller. There’s no unnecessary filler, just sharp, controlled storytelling that keeps everything moving. The suspense builds gradually but constantly, and the atmosphere of unease is maintained throughout the entire book. It has a very cinematic feel, almost like you’re watching everything unfold in real time.
Overall, this is a really gripping and addictive thriller that will definitely appeal to fans of twisty, psychological reads. It keeps you on edge the whole way through and makes it very difficult to stop reading once you’ve started.

This story follows Serena and her son Art, beginning on New Years Day and for the following months after.
When 20 year old Art wakes from a night terror in the early hours of 1 January Serena rushes in to offer comfort, and notices that there is heavy snowfall outside. When Art declines to go outside, Serena decides to go for a walk herself and happens upon a young man who is seemingly going to jump into the nearby river and end his life. Serena gently manages to convince him to come back to the house with her and offers support. He introduces himself as Paul and says he is fine now and won’t attempt to harm himself again.
A few weeks later, back in London, Serena bumps into Paul again and is delighted to see he is back on his feet again and agrees to go to dinner with him. But Paul is not what she thinks, and he soon delivers a truth that he has been hiding that shocks her.
When Paul becomes further embroiled into her life and Art’s, Serena goes to desperate measures to try and rid him from their lives, leaving a trail of secrets and lies in her wake.
This was a good psychological thriller. It raises questions in your own mind - is Paul dangerous, is Serena deluded, can Art see what’s going on or do they all have blinkers on. There are more than a few secrets being kept, there is plenty of gaslighting and twists to keep you guessing.
As with most of B P Walter’s books, some of those past characters are woven into the story, giving a glimpse of their lives now and how they are connected, even in small ways.

The plot to this story was great, with plenty of twists and unexpected elements sprinkled throughout. I loved the use of multiple POVs in this book - Serena, Art and Paul’s - and the chapters beginning with the month it occurred was the perfect way of showing the quick demise of relationships and the intensity of Paul on the lives of Serena and Art. The character development was excellent and although they all weren’t overly likeable, I was engaged and interested in each of their story’s. I loved the character of Meryl, the American surrogate mother and grandmother, who was Serena’s go to for support but also able to provide her with realistic opinions and able to make her see other perspectives.
Although the ending to this was a little predictable, the reasoning was not!
I was immediately hooked on this book and highly recommend this for psychological thriller lovers! With themes of love, revenge and betrayal, it is a great read and I’m looking forward to reading more of BP Walter’s work!

The premise was intriguing and immediately drew me in, setting up enough suspense to hook me early on and keep me curious about the characters and how everything connects.
While my trust shifted between characters, that uncertainty added to the tension. At first, I agreed with Art’s reaction to his mother’s decision, but as the story progressed, it became clear that everyone had something to hide. Serena, in particular, was difficult to root for, and although her choices were stressful at times, they also heightened the unease running through the story.

The New Boyfriend (previously titled as The Handsome Stranger) was my first experience with B. P. Walter, and I was genuinely excited going in. I’m always on the lookout for new voices in the thriller genre, so I was happy to receive an ARC through NetGalley.
I ended up landing at a solid 3 stars, mostly because I had pretty mixed feelings overall.
On the positive side, this is a very easy, fast read. The short chapters keep things moving, and the use of multiple POVs and timelines adds some variety and momentum. The premise is intriguing and definitely pulls you in early on.
That said, the biggest issue for me was the characters. None of them felt particularly likable or even compelling enough to root for, which made it harder to stay fully invested. In a character-driven thriller, that’s a tough hurdle to overcome, and it ultimately affected my overall enjoyment more than anything else.
The twist also didn’t quite land for me. It wasn’t terrible, but it felt a bit underwhelming given the buildup. And while I’m usually willing to suspend disbelief in this genre, some of the choices here pushed things a little too far. The central setup especially strained credibility. It was hard to buy into certain decisions, particularly when it came to trusting a complete stranger so quickly.
Even with those drawbacks, I wouldn’t write this author off. There’s enough here to suggest that B. P. Walter has a style that could really work for me with stronger characters and a tighter payoff. I’d still be open to picking up future books.

My first introduction to B.P. Walter’s writing was “The Winter Visitor”, a book that I absolutely loved. I would have given it a 10 out of 5 stars if it was allowed. I told all my reading friends they needed to read it, and my non-reading friends all about the book.
Picking up “The Handsome Stranger” was an automatic “YES!” for me. Man, was I disappointed.
It’s hard to review this book without giving key things away. So, we will stick with what is easy to state about the story. Serena is on holiday with her college-age son when she comes across a stranger in distress. She has immediate compassion for him and invites him to the place where she and her son are staying. Isn’t it interesting how one act of kindness can set events into motion?
For many of my reviews, I will say, “It’s a novel. You will have to suspend disbelief. It is fiction after all.” But “The Handsome Stranger” requires you to suspends so much disbelief that you can not be grounded in reality at all. You may need to visit your local psych ward.
Hardly any of the characters in this book are really likable. They all feel overly dramatic. The only truly likable character gets killed off.
I am going to assume that this was a hiccup in my relationship with B.P. Walter’s writing. “The Winter Visitor” was just too good. I look forward (with a bit of trepidation) to the next novel.

One of the standout elements for me was Paul. He’s such a dark and complex character, and I genuinely couldn’t decide whether I hated him or not — which made him all the more compelling to read. I really enjoyed the way the book explored family dynamics, trust, and the lingering effect of the past, all while slowly layering in more questions and suspicions. The tension was handled well, and even in the quieter moments there was still that feeling that something darker could be waiting just beneath the surface.
The flashbacks added another interesting layer to the story and helped build the mystery without giving too much away too soon. I found myself wanting to keep reading to see how everything would come together, and the atmosphere of uncertainty made it easy to stay invested.

Whichever of his moniker variations Barnaby Walter is writing under, he invariably manages to produce highly readable dramatic fiction. Over the past few years he has become one of my "must read" authors and I have a particular liking for his works published under the B.P. Walter name, which usually have a decidedly noir element to them.
The author's latest offering, "The Handsome Stranger" also contains aspects of noir fiction, in as much as each of the principle characters is flawed to some degree. That said, this lacks the same depths of darkness that I have come to associate with this writer's work. Nor is the plot progression as unexpected as is usually the case either. I have commented in the past that neither the titles, nor the synopses of B.P. Walter's novels could adequately prepare the reader for the content and that they would regularly find themselves being blindsided. However, I am not convinced that the same could be said this time around. Although the storytelling is, as ever, fluent and engaging, the plot developments were more conventional than I have come to expect from Barnaby Walter. Even though this isn't my favourite of his thrillers, I still enjoyed the experience and there is no doubt that I will be back for his next book, "The Christmas Guest" later this year.

Thanks to net galley for this advanced reader copy. The handsome stranger Paul appears in at the side of the river very shaken and upset.
Serena tries to talk Paul round to help him, what a mistake this was. At first you are awaiting for something to happen but this book is more of a slow burn and build up.
It works between past and present for Paul and Serena to give the reader the understanding of the past. Then there is Art Serena's son , the book leads you to think that there may be a romance between them.
One part of this book that is deep is the impact of trauma and families how it just doesnt quite leave you and how important it is to seek help. There are sad elements even though its a thriller book.

This is an interesting take on a “karma” thriller. The whole reading experience nearly had me ripping my hair out because of the questionable decisions being made left and right. The Handsome Stranger really explores human values and flaws, especially the flaws, which makes it feel realistic when you really think about it. Adding the factors of age and upbringing makes everything make so much sense that I couldn’t stop being hysterical and cussing at the characters with every page I turned.
It’s like you can see how, even in real life, if intense feelings consume you, you’ll most likely drown in them in ways you’ll regret. This is my first time reading B.P. Walter’s work, and definitely not my last! The pages kept pulling me in because I needed to know what happened next, if only to figure out who I was going to passionately cuss at next.

This was completely different to what I expected, right from the start it went in a different direction. The divide of a family could be described as cunning, but also written that it could be innocent. I enjoyed reading it and not knowing if things were intentionally. This was a bit of a slow start, where I thought it might lead to being a romance, however after that things moved quickly and I was in no doubt of the genre! Definitely a good read!

While I have read a couple of BP Walters' books, this one was actually unbelievable. As in can it really happen? No. It is a novel.

A very good and easy thriller read!
The Handsome Stranger follows a plot that has been done before, but includes twits that were fresh and surprising. This story tackles MH issues and trauma responses in men, which is an area I think more books should represent. It delves into the darker side of the human condition that makes psychological thrillers so captivating. What seemed like a chance encounter, leads the main characters into a domino effect of events.
This story is character driven with changes in POV which allows the reader to realize more about the story than the characters themselves do half of the time. This story does have a generally happy ending and leaves the reader with one final twist that I didn’t see coming. I would recommend this story for anyone looking for a psychological thriller!

This book started out so strong, I was hooked and intrigued from page one. The feeling of intrigue continued for about 60% of the book but o felt it was quite slow, I needed a bit more from the book- a bit faster paced, more action & suspense.
My feelings on the FMC were mixed… I liked her but can’t help but think she was jealous the whole time, like if Paul got together with her, would she have been suspicious of him the whole time, how would that have ended?
I liked Art but was just frustrated at him the whole time. I guess that’s the thing about growing up, and that you have to experience the things yourself rather than from other people.
Strong theme of family relationships, love and loss

Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for an early copy of The Handsome Stranger. This was FANTASTIC!!! What an AWESOME plot, never will guess the ending, WILD! The beginning was weird, inviting a stranger in, then the flirting in the kitchen looking at the foxes, was icky. The dinner scene was WHOAAAAAAA, I nearly fell off the chair, NEVER SAW THAT COMING! The emotional scenes between Serena and Art were heartbreaking at times, as a mom trying to protect your child is very hard. I did see Paul for who he was and was not surprised at what he did, guessed it right away. This is a WINNER!

B.P. Walter does it again! Having read a couple of his books now, I’m always impressed by his work, and The New Boyfriend was just as incredible as the others. I absolutely love how he drops in subtle little links that connect his books together, even though they are all completely standalone novels it's such a treat for returning readers!
This one was incredibly tense, twisty, and fast-paced. The story keeps you completely hooked by shifting between the perspectives of Paul, Art, Serena, and a timeline set 21 years ago. A fantastic, gripping read that I couldn't put down!

❤️ wonderful story!!! I really enjoyed this read! #thehandsomestranger #thenewboyfriend I prefer the first title this book held to the new. Unfortunately that’s not up to me. It sounds more mysterious as stranger.

There's an eerie and suspenseful atmosphere, when Serena (as an act of kindness) brings a stranger into her cosy holiday cottage on a winters evening. I loved the psychological aspects as it's written from the different viewpoints of Serena, Art and Paul. There's surprises and shocks galore which all lead to a dramatic conclusion. This is B P Walter at his best.

I have found this author has books that are hit or miss for me, and this one was definitely a miss. I don’t think there was a single likeable character amongst them. The plot did not quite go the way I thought it would but I found myself skim reading it just to find out the ending, which I thought was pretty weak.

Amazing thriller book ! Just Imagine letting a perfect stranger into your life ! was it fate or was it planned? 😱📖🤌🏻 best plot twists ever ! I couldnt believe them left me speechless!🤭🫣😱📖! Loved how it was a fast paced page turner 🤌🏻📚 with lots going on ! the tension , the drama , the secrets , the lies.
