Seventeen-year-old prodigy, David Holloway, never felt like he belonged. With telekinetic powers that mysteriously developed when he was five, his biggest obsession has been finding out why and how. When an enchanting water spirit, Natiri, approaches him, David dares to hope that his lifelong search is coming to an end.

But when Natiri betrays him, tricking him into releasing the Echilibru, a powerful group of spirits, David learns that he just might be responsible for the destruction of the human race. Then come the Guardians, a secret society that claim to have been created to keep the world safe and blissfully unaware of spiritual threats like the Echilibru.

Caught in the midst of this secret world, David learns more about the Guardians and their convoluted connection to the Echilibru, causing him to question whether he’s fighting on the right side. In his quest to save mankind, David must figure out who the real culprits are and whether he could live with the consequences of destroying them.

(I won this book for free through the Goodreads First Reads giveaway.)

I was going to rate this book 4 stars, but I realized I was evaluating it like an adult (*), while it reads and feels a lot more like Middle School literature, and I know if I had read it at that age, I'd definitely give it 5 stars.

Upsides:

1. I'm in love with the cover, it's so pretty!

2. The world-building and mythology are interesting, and surely didn't let me down.

3. Almost every chapter ends in a cliffhanger (!!)

4. All the characters feel real, asking the same questions I would. They're also all quite likeable and honest. This honest part could be a downside, because it contradicts the summary's insinuation of deceit and moral ambiguity. But since this isn't a standalone, I can still hope for some turn-coating in the future. And more characters (that aren't as nice).

5. There is a good chance there will be some time travel at some point, which I am totally looking forward to.

(*) Downsides:

1. Adult characters have little importance.

2. It could do with more action/suspense scenes.

3. I can't help feeling a bit disappointed that the magic system isn't more science-y, especially considering the main character is a science prodigy. Like, that levitation spell? Does it decrease your body density? I've read about astronauts and the absence-of-gravity's influence over the body and it's not pretty. Also, levitation alone could never protect you from the change in air pressure. Unless the potions sold already have additives taking that into account, which would actually be quite logical, from a consumerism point of view.

As a whole, it was pretty entertaining, and I'm definitely looking forward to the sequel!

I've won this book from the giveaways and I loved it.
I have to admit; I started this book this morning and (I work at home so I can make my own time) I finished just a minute ago.
I was very easy to read and very exciting. I HAD to read on and on..... My work was not so happy but I was.

The story is very interesting and the characters are growing on me but the story not finished. It has just begon. I did not know the book would be part of a series but I am definitely going to read the other parts when they will be written and released.

The book has a sort of Percy Jackson vibe but that is no problem because I loved those books as well.
Can't wait for the rest!

This is an awesome first book from a great up and coming new author! The characters are fully developed and feel like real people, not just characters in a book. The story itself, the plotting and pace are all right on and keep you engaged right up till the last page of the book. I cannot wait to see where Angel takes this sereies in the future. I highly recommend this book!
