The Drum Tree

Rate this book
The Drum Tree is an eco-fantasy novel that explores the mystical power of nature and people’s symbiotic connection to it. With the world on the verge of industrial emergence and a profit-based economy, the villagers of Deep Knoll must reconcile their fears of the nearby forest when a young boy vanishes. Beckoned by a mysterious drum, and enraptured by its guiding rhythm, sixteen-year-old Delan embarks upon a journey into the woods.

Once Delan’s friend Hali, and his rival, Jase, follow him into the unknown wilds, their quest begins. In their forest wanderings, Delan and his companions find a circle of trees. “A tree grew in the center of the circle. Mouths agape, the three could only stare. It was the most massive thing, living or constructed, that any of them had ever seen or even imagined . . . Sunlight streamed around the tips of the branches and pierced through the dense leaf canopy to illuminate a magical world below.”

In the clearing, they are joined by Larra, from a distant village, and the music of her flute. Upon touching the tree, the four adventurers are shown visions of destruction and beauty across the planet. These visions lead them to discover their own gifts and what they must do with them.

The Drum Tree is the first in a series.

What a compelling read!

It took me a bit of time in the beginning to get the hang of the characters, to understand their way of talking, etc., but once that was done, I really didn’t want to put it down.

The characters could not have been written any better - I could sense each of their feelings quite well. Even the younger ones, with all their mixed emotions, were clear and understandable.

This story is not just about human characters but other very important ones with their own stories shared. There is more to say but that would involve spoilers. I know there has to be a sequel and I look forward to enjoying that one when it comes.

Once started, I was not able to put The Drum Tree down. It's a compelling story that at points, especially when the dark forest was mentioned, sent shivers down my spine. The characters are so real that you feel as if you are a part of the story yourself. The coming of age theme and the theme of ecological changes was done nicely so that you felt the themes rather than listened to them being told. The twists and turns and the evolution of the characters and their relationships was done masterfully. The tension between Jase and Delan with the addition of Hali as a possible romantic partner for one or the other was well managed and keeps the reader guessing. When the last page was read, I was both happy Catherine is planning to make it a series and inpatient for her to finish the next book which I will undoubtedly read.

I picked this up looking for a good fantasy escape, but I ended up getting a lot more than I bargained for. The whole concept of The Drum Tree really makes you stop and think about how disconnected we have become from nature. The story starts with this intense mystery where a little boy vanishes, and you instantly feel the panic of the village. Delan, the main character, is drawn into the deep woods by this mysterious drum beat, and his journey becomes so much more than just a rescue mission. The description of the massive tree they find is just breathtaking, it felt so real. It is a brilliant eco-fantasy that forces the characters to recognise the balance between destruction and beauty. It left me reflecting on our own world and how we organise our societies. Can not wait for the next book.

What really struck me about this book was the human relationships, especially the rivalry between Delan and Jase. Throwing them into an unpredictable, mystical forest together whilst they are trying to find a missing child created so much tension. They stumble upon this absolutely massive tree that completely changes their perspective on everything. The visions they receive of global beauty and destruction felt incredibly timely and honest, almost like a warning about our own industrial progress. It is an eco-fantasy, yes, but it feels so grounded in real human emotion and our shared struggles. Catherine V. Wolf has done a fantastic job creating a world that feels both magical and deeply relevant to our current environmental worries. I honestly could not put it down once they entered the woods.

There is something really deep about how this story handles our fear of the unknown. The characters live right on the edge of a forest they are terrified of, which felt so relatable because we all have things we avoid out of pure fear. When the young boy goes missing, it forces everyone to face what they have been running from. Watching Delan step into those woods felt like a lesson in facing your own demons. The way Catherine V. Wolf writes about the massive tree in the centre of the woods completely blew me away. It felt like a massive wake up call about how we treat our own planet, honestly. I loved how the characters realised their own unique gifts through these crazy visions. It really made me think about my own connection to the world around me. Definitely a solid read.

This was such an intense read, I could not put it down once the main conflicts started showing up. The author really understands how to write about relatable struggles, especially when it comes to a small village trying to protect its identity against massive industrial growth. It is called The Drum Tree and it perfectly captures that fragile, symbiotic relationship between humans and the wild. I found some sentences a bit long, but honestly, it just added to the natural, conversational rhythm of the narrative. Catherine Wolf does not shy away from the hard emotional truths of what happens when progress threatens tradition. It is an excellent, deeply moving eco-fantasy that feels incredibly grounded in real human experience.

This book hooked me right away! I love the easy-to-read writing style and the weaving in of environmental concerns. The story follows a teenager on the verge of manhood who has never quite fit in with society. He goes off on an adventure that changes his small village forever. The story weaves in magical elements of the environment and multiple characters who have paths that cross and intertwine. Multiple times I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened next but needed to stop. I'm looking forward to the next book, to see where the adventure takes these characters.

* I received this book at no cost in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

The Drum Tree is a quietly compelling start to a fantasy series that favors depth over spectacle. Instead of rushing into action, it builds a richly grounded world and lets its mystery unfold naturally—drawing you in through character, place, and a growing sense that something much larger is at play.

Delan is an engaging lead, and his relationships anchor the story with real emotional weight. The magic is subtle and intriguing rather than over-explained, giving the book a sense of wonder that lingers.

If you’re a fan of thoughtful, character-driven fantasy in the vein this is a rewarding and promising first installment.

What a beautifully written book, it really explores the mystical power of nature without feeling silly or over the top. The way the villagers have to face their fears about the nearby forest, whilst dealing with the onset of the industrial age, felt so believable. It is an eco-fantasy by Catherine Wolf, but it reads like a piece of historical fiction because the human emotions are so raw and honest. I loved the focus on the actual, real-world value of community and tradition. There are a couple of repetitive descriptions here and there, but honestly, it just made the setting feel more vivid and real. It is a wonderful story that makes you look at the natural world a bit differently.

I usually prefer fast-paced fantasy but this one completely won me over with its depth and emotional honesty. The whole concept of a symbiotic connection to nature being threatened by industry is so relevant, it made the story feel incredibly practical and real. The people of Deep Knoll are facing massive changes, and their internal conflicts are written so well. You really feel their anxiety and their courage. Catherine Wolf has created something quite special with The Drum Tree, it is thoughtful, slightly melancholic, and very powerful. The prose has a few quirks, an extra comma here and there, but it just sounds like a real story being told by a real person. Highly recommend.

This book really makes you think about what we are sacrificing in the name of progress, it is a very powerful eco-fantasy. The struggle between the villagers and the changing world around them felt so genuine, it is a very relatable look at how humans handle fear and change. The atmosphere of the forest is so thick and mysterious, you can almost feel it. I think Catherine Wolf did a brilliant job keeping the story focused on the human experience rather than just the magical elements. It is an intense read, and the practical message about protecting our environment really hits home. A truly remarkable book that I will be recommending to all my friends.

I loved how quiet and observational this story felt at times, it gave the emotional moments a lot more weight. The conflict between the traditional way of life in Deep Knoll and the approaching industrial era is written with so much honesty. It is an eco-fantasy, but the focus is firmly on the people and their relationship with the land, which gives it a lot of real-world usefulness. Catherine Wolf writes with a very natural, slightly imperfect style that I found really refreshing to read. The Drum Tree is a beautiful reminder of what connects us all, and the struggles the characters go through felt completely authentic. A really wonderful, deeply moving piece of fiction.

If you want a fantasy book that actually has something important to say about the world, this is it. The way it explores the mystical power of nature and the symbiotic connection we have with it is just beautiful. The threat of industrialisation looming over the village creates a really intense, gripping atmosphere. You see the characters dealing with very real, human fears about the future. The author, Catherine Wolf, has a great knack for writing relatable struggles that make you think about your own life. It is a thoroughly engaging read, with a few rough edges in the phrasing that honestly just made it feel more human.

I was really moved by the emotional honesty in this book, it is a fantastic eco-fantasy that feels incredibly grounded. The villagers trying to reconcile their fears of the forest while the modern world closes in on them was just so well done. It speaks directly to the human experience of dealing with unwanted change. Catherine Wolf has crafted a story that is both magical and deeply practical in its message about the environment. The pacing is a bit deliberate, but it fits the story perfectly and allows you to really get inside the characters' heads. The Drum Tree is definitely one of the most unique books I have read in a long time.

Simple & Thoughtful

The Drum Tree was a really calming and enjoyable read for me. There’s something about the simplicity of the story that makes it feel meaningful without trying too hard. It has a quiet, almost reflective tone that stays with you after reading.

What I liked most was how it made me slow down and just take in the message. It’s the kind of book that doesn’t overwhelm you with details but still manages to feel deep and memorable.

If you enjoy gentle, thoughtful stories that leave room for interpretation and reflection, this one is definitely worth picking up.

I was captivated by The Drum Tree. The natural world that Catherine V. Wolf describes so eloquently and movingly, the multi-generational characters she created and the connections between them, and the story with its twists and turns were all very engaging. I'm really looking forward to the continuation of the story and finding out what happens next to these characters, to the places and living creatures they know and the ones they are starting to discover, respect, and love.

This would have benefited from being a duology or trilogy to flesh out the story and characters more. So much potential! Just felt a little stunted at times and has weird pacing.
