“Dierne. It means secret in the old language. You are a mystery—a mystery I intend to solve. And I always get my way, one way or another.“

✨ Enemies-to-lovers
✨ Captor × captive tension and chemistry
✨ Forced Proximity
✨ Found family and banter
✨ Magic and prophecy

I thoroughly enjoyed being emotionally devastated by this story.

From the very first chapter, I was completely hooked. I loved how the majority of the story was from Owen’s POV, and the captor × captive dynamic had me gripping my Kindle.

“He said I wasn’t a prisoner, yet I wasn’t allowed to leave.”

Elira is a standout, she’s mysterious, strong, and full of edge. I loved seeing her learn more about herself, while still keeping her independence and sharp mind.

“There really was something about her, though. Something I couldn’t figure out. Like the way her resolve never wavered, despite whatever it was she endured. I was convinced she knew more than she let on; she must have known more. I needed her to.”

The Ignis Guard’s found family dynamic is phenomenal. Their banter is sharp, funny, and fierce, balancing darker, emotional moments beautifully. I am SO invested in these characters and there are parts that truly made me gasp out loud.

“She was quickly becoming one of us, whether she liked it or not. And no one seemed to mind. No one had ever blended in with us so seamlessly like this before.”

Owen and Elira’s relationship is absolutely magnetic. Their chemistry is electric, full of tension and moments that make your heart race.

“It felt like fire and earth and wind. Inevitable. Like the world hadn’t made sense until now, until him. Nothing had made sense.”

You can feel the pull between them building naturally, the slow burn and stakes making every interaction charged and impossible to ignore.

“Once we’d crossed that line, I knew in my soul we’d never be the same. The smart thing would have been to stop it. To dig deep for every ounce of restraint I had and tell her to leave, knowing it would hollow me out. A better man might have had that strength, but I was not that man.”

The Obscurem are actually scary, the stakes are high, and the pacing keeps you flipping pages. Every twist, every reveal, and every moment of banter hit perfectly. I couldn’t put this down, and I am beyond ready for the next book.

Thank you so much for letting me beta read this. It was an absolute joy.

Chaos, vibes, and opinions are all my own ✨ please give credit if you share.

I’m staring at a wall. What did I just read??? That was an absolute wild ride and I’m actually unwell knowing book two is nowhere in sight.

The found family, well actually chosen family, with the Ignis Guard is done so well. They all have their own strengths and quirks and I loved every single one of them for different reasons, but especially their loyalty to the MMC, Owen.

Owen is such a good balance between his duty as a prince and his instincts. And the tension and banter with the FMC??? I was giggling half the time.

But the FMC might be one of my favorites. I won’t say her name because that’s part of the fun, but she’s sharp tongued, witty, and watching her grow into her power and learn to trust herself was the absolute best part. I was rooting for her the entire time.

I also loved the sprinkle of different POVs because it added so much more depth and context to the story.

And the twists??? I guessed a couple, but nothing and I mean nothing could have prepared me for that last 25%. Robyn please, I need book two immediately.

A MUST read into a very captivating world. Definitely one I would’ve read within 24 hours, had I not had sick kiddos. There are so many plot twists that definitely were unexpected. I was certainly at the edge of my seat as I delved deeper into the story. Each chapter leaves you wanting more and craving to see what happens next with all the characters involved.

Owen (MMC), is our Prince of Flames, who also commands the famous Ignis Guard. Each member handpicked by the Prince: Aeris, Rayner, Velum, and Wilder. These four are his most trusted and each one special in the magic the wield. Our FMC is a mysterious fae woman that the Ignis Guard stumble upon during a mission. Their paths crossing has everyone questioning. As the journey moves forward — secrets slowly start to unravel, pieces start to click into place, and truths are revealed. Duty to the crown will be tested. Which path will each one take? Will their individual choices be their salvation or their destruction?

The ending leaves you wanting to know what happens next. I absolutely cannot wait for the next book in the series. I must know what happens to Owen, our mysterious FMC, Aeris, Rayner, Velum, and Wilder.

Robyn has outdone herself with this debut. Amazing world building, pacing is great, character introduction and building is fantastic, and the plot twists are perfection. I absolutely love the characters and plot line. I certainly cannot wait to read what happens to all within Emberlyn.

I loved the cast of characters and thought they made a great found family. I would have liked to see more development to the build up for Owen and Elira's relationship. It felt a little sudden for me. Overall an easy read with some twists I wasn't expecting!

I received an advanced copy of Beneath the Burning Throne from the Author Robyn Jones, and am voluntarily leaving an honest review:

Beneath the Burning Throne is the debut novel of Robyn Jones and is the first book in the Kingdom of Shadow Duology.

The story is written in first person, with multiple POVs. It takes place in a magical Kingdom and the story follows Prince Owen: Commander of the Ignis Guard, his closest allies and a mysterious woman they come across while on a mission to retrieve an artifact that tells the dark prophecy of his father’s kingdom. This woman is secretive and defensive, but Prince Owen and the women are drawn to each other for reasons unbeknownst to them all.

The book contains some of my favourite tropes such as: found family, fierce FMC (bonus: she’s in her 30s!!), a fire-wielding fae prince as the MMC.

I am happy to see more stories being created with a FMC who is not 19/20 years old but yet wise beyond her years. That was definitely the most intriguing aspect that made me want to read.

I really enjoyed the world building, the magic systems, and the different magical species described throughout. I liked the main plot and enjoyed following the story though and gaining new insights through the different POVs so I could piece together the answers along with the characters. I enjoyed the banter between the main characters, as well as the journey of self discovery that both Owen, and the mystery woman go through. I found the side characters to be charming and enjoyed the tight-knit bond they all had in the guard. Each member of the guard is unique in their personality, powers, and skill set.

There were moments were I felt as if the relationship were rushed along too quickly between the love interests and would have liked more of a slow-burn as opposed to going from not speaking to each other, and then very quickly they can’t live without the other.

I’m giving this debut novel 4 stars.

I really enjoyed it, I would recommend it to other readers who enjoy fantasy as well as Romantasy, as I found it had beautiful world building and a unique take on magical creatures.

I enjoyed how the book ends in a cliff hanger that makes you want to start the next one right away!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫(4.5/5) Beneath the Burning Throne by @robynjoneswrites 🫶Thank you Robyn for the early copy, can’t wait for its release in May!

What a knockout debut! This book is full of action, twists and turns, and characters you can’t help but root for. 🙌

From the very beginning you’re sucked into the world, trying to make sense of the events that take place. When you meet the Ignus Guard, you’re immediately surrounded by the feeling of a true found family, even though some members are slow to warm up! 🥰

The FMC’s has the most amazing journey of self discovery, strength and resiliency. I’m not going to tell you her name; because it’s a bit of a mystery to the reader for a chunk of the book, but it’s worth the mystery! 😍

Overall, if you want a book that will keep you engaged and intrigued you found it! Can’t wait for Robyn to write book two so I can devour it as well!

4⭐️ Beneath the Burning Throne is an epic romantasy debut that almost from the get go had me questioning everything and trusting no one.

There were many unusual aspects to this story when compared to the storylines typical of this genre. First, this book is largely told from the male POV, which I found to be a breath of fresh air, especially since Owen is a brave, loyal and emotionally intelligent character.

Second, this book uses timeline jumps to disorient the reader as a way to keep them from being able to predict important plot twists. At first this style confounded me, and I could not decide if I was frustrated with it or intrigued. Maybe a little bit of both. I kept an open mind though, and I'm so glad I did! This strategy pays off in a big way time and time again.

Two of my favorite things about this book were the mystical world that the author created and the relationship dynamics between members of Owen's Ignis Guard.

Emberlyn is a realm occupied by intelligent people/creatures of all types (and colors!), elemental magic, towns with fire-based names, warded doorways to hidden cities, meddling witches, mysterious vanishing caves, and terrifying magical monsters. I felt like I was traveling through a dark fairytale half the book.

All of the side characters in the Ignis Guard felt fully fleshed out - each strong and memorable in their own way. I loved their "found family" vibes, maybe more than any found family in any romantasy I've read before. Their fun banter and love for one another were highlights of this story.

I won't speak much to the FMC because she is a plot twist herself. But her journey of self-discovery while regaining the memories of her past is both heartbreaking and empowering.

I was conflicted about how to rate this book as there were many things that set it apart from other books in this genre, and overall, I enjoyed the story. At times, the writing style was more telling than showing and could feel a bit repetitive. But there is one aspect that will negatively impact how I feel overall about a book every single time it happens, and that is insta-love between the two main characters.

I could not get beyond that first kiss and how they got to that point when there had seemingly been no direct interactions to help the reader feel they had deep attraction or a connection with one another. Their intimate interactions are beautifully written when they happen, don't get me wrong. But I could never fully buy into their romance because there was no build-up, no yearning beforehand. I would not call this romance a slow burn as I've seen others do.

To conclude, this is a fantastic debut novel, filled with mystery, betrayal and compelling characters. If you love epic fantasy journeys, and character-driven plots with multi-povs that keep you guessing, you'll likely enjoy Beneath the Burning Throne.

Thank you to the author for providing me with an advanced reader copy of this book. This review is my honest opinion, and I'm leaving it voluntarily.

5 🌟 Received as an Arc. Firstly huge thank you to the author for the opportunity to read this. Wow, this was just fantastic.

I loved everything about it, the story, the characters, the world building, great twists. I could not put it down.

It was very unique and unlike anything I have read. There was a little spice, not much but I’m okay with that. Fast paced, it just seemed to flow. I hope I don’t have to wait too long for the next one.

First off I want to say thank you to the author for allowing me to be an ARC reader!

This book was awesome. The story kept me engaged from beginning to end. Pacing was great! I would say that at the 60% point is where it really picked up and I didn’t want to put it down. And the last 100 pages! Omg. I loved the magic in this and how it all came together in the end.

I need book two now!

Beneath the Burning Throne is a must read! From the very first chapter, I was intrigued by this world and wanted to know more. The reveals in the story kept me hooked and wanting to read more!

The found family trope was well executed and the side characters felt fully realized. I loved their personalities which made their interactions entertaining and also heartfelt. Let's not forget Prince Owen, my new book boyfriend! He is what MMC are ment to be, powerful yet loving and loyal to those in his circle and one who wants to make the world a better place. The FMC takes no shit and is a fierce person go to up against. Although she is a bit of a mistery, her true nature shines through. I also loved the added bonus that she is over 30.

If you love fantasy romance with dark prophecies, shadow monsters, found family and who did this to you - than this is the book for you! I already can't wait for the next book!

***Honest review of advanced copy received by Author***

As a first time ARC reader, I wasn’t sure what to expect from an author’s debut novel, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed Beneath the Burning Throne.

If you’re a fan of……
• Romantasy
• Found/Chosen Family
• Forced Proximity
• Enemies to Lovers
• Captor/Captive
• “Who did this to you?”
• Magic and Prophecy
• Slow Burn…..
Then I highly recommend you pick this book up!

Like any magic centered romantasy, the initial understanding of the magic systems and world building takes a bit to dive into but once you’re in the author has created an incredible foundation to build off for (hopefully) many more books. It was an interesting change of pace for me to have a mostly MMC centered POV for the majority of the book but it was so refreshing to have an MMC who is not only strong, brave and hot (of course), but to also have so much depth, emotional intelligence, maturity, vulnerability and appreciation for consent. This, coupled with a strong, kind, thoughtful, brave, mysterious, FMC who is also over 30 and has been through some intense trauma but is still able to be trusting without being naïve….what a revelation! The chemistry that develops between the two is definitely a slow burn but very worth the wait.

The secondary characters who make up the Ignis guard and the found family aspect, have great banter, chemistry and exceptional loyalty to the MMC and eventually to the FMC that is heartwarming and enjoyable to experience throughout the entire book. I’m hopeful that we get to learn so much more about them in future books because each of them are so interesting individually and I can’t wait to know more.

Being completely honest, there are some moments when certain characters are introduced who end up having a large impact on the overall story but don’t feel developed enough throughout the book to warrant this. I’m thinking specifically about the MMC’s sister in this scenario. I didn’t hate how her storyline played out in the end but at the same time it felt a bit out of place given that she is barely mentioned throughout the rest of the book. Besides that, I truly enjoyed falling into this world and falling in love with these characters and have no idea how I’m expected to wait until we get the next book to make up for that cliffhanger!

Thank you again to the author, Robyn Jones and her team for allowing me to get an advanced copy of the book, I truly enjoyed it!

This book was a wild ride I would gladly read again! The fast-paced plot is filled with twists that pulled at my emotions. I was genuinely shocked by the unexpected plot twist and plan to read the second book once it's released. I was on the edge of my seat during the final chapters, immersed in the characters' intense journey, and enjoyed every moment. This story definitely lives up to the hype.

It features some great tropes and is very easy to follow. I loved every character and the dynamics between them, especially the main relationship between the two protagonists, which I look forward to seeing develop in the next installment.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one! The word building, the characters, the pace, the plot and the twists?! Absolutely amazing. I also loved the multiple POV’s!

I absolutely loved the found family trope was done so well and it made you love all of the characters! Rayner had me laughing out loud so many times🤭

Our MMC, Owen, he was absolutely swoon-worthy. The tension and yearning between him and the FMC?! Absolutely perfection!🔥
I absolutely loved the FMC, I won’t say her name because this is something you’ll find out when reading🤭 such a strong character who went through so much and the character growth was fantastic!

The twists and turns had me gasping!! And the last 20% of this book?! I was on the edge of my seat! I cannot wait for the next book😍

If you looking for a fresh romantasy with new monsters, a strong found family arc, a cursed and corrupt kingdom, and an MMC who would burn it all down? Like ACTUALLY burn it all down! And an older FMC working through some deep rooted trauma and memory loss. WHO DID THIS TO YOU?! This. This is what you need!

This is a dual ( plus a few extras) narrative book, though mostly through the lens of the MMC, which has been a nice shift for me. I needed this. The entourage supporting the MMC are relatable and loveable and forge a solid inner circle to build this world around.

There were some incredible plot twists rendering me unable to actually put the story down.

Excellent world-building pulls you deep into this romantasy from the very beginning. The story takes readers on a wild ride packed with twists, turns, and nonstop intrigue. The main female character is mysterious, fierce, and completely unforgettable. She is a true badass who refuses to back down. It’s easy to understand why Prince Owen becomes so captivated by her. His refusal to let her go had me enamored with him. Overall, this was an exciting and immersive read that kept me hooked the entire time.

ARC Review | Spoiler Alert ⤵️

This book completely pulled me in.

Right from the dedication, the tone feels empowering, which immediately made me excited to keep reading. I also loved that the story opened with a male POV—something you do not see very often in the fantasy genre—and it worked really well here. The imagery throughout the book is incredibly detailed, making every setting feel vivid and cinematic. The adventurous atmosphere especially stood out to me; it genuinely felt like a high-stakes D&D campaign at times.

One of the strongest aspects of the book is the character dynamics. The charged tension between the main characters starts early, and once the dual POV begins, it becomes even more engaging. Their banter is genuinely one of the best parts of the story, and I was invested in every interaction between them. I also thought it was a clever choice to refer to the FMC simply as “Her” for so long. It made finally learning Elira’s name feel strangely intimate, almost as though the reader had earned that trust alongside the characters.

The fantasy elements are also very well done. The gore surrounding the creatures is graphic in a way that actually adds to the atmosphere rather than feeling excessive, and the connection between Elira and the shadow creature is incredibly alluring from the start. I was constantly trying to figure out what linked them together. The book does an excellent job of deceiving both the characters and the reader at the same time, which made reveals like the truth about what she really is feel shocking in the best way. Those twists genuinely caught me off guard.

Emotionally, the book succeeds as well. Owen slowly softening toward her is incredibly sweet, and the moment when she finally trusts him enough to tell him her name feels very meaningful. Their first kiss was done beautifully, and I loved the parallel between the witch warning that Elira would be someone’s undoing and Owen later echoing that same idea himself.

At the same time, I do think the romance is one of the weaker aspects structurally. Despite how much I loved their chemistry, the relationship itself feels rushed in places. Some emotional moments or conversations—like the sudden “tell me about your mother” scene—feel inserted more to force intimacy than to develop it naturally. Ironically, the story both rushes the romance and drags out certain aspects of it, which became slightly frustrating at times.

The pacing overall is extremely fast, but honestly, I think it works in the book’s favor most of the time. There is constantly something happening, and several moments genuinely shocked me. Wilder’s “death” had me panicking for a second, Henry’s scene was horrifyingly graphic, and by the final stretch I was fully stressed in the best possible way. The atmosphere in places like the old English-style taverns also added so much charm and fantasy immersion to the story.

Overall, this book feels very reminiscent of the Throne of Glass series in both pacing and emotional intensity, but it still manages to stand on its own through its twists, atmosphere, and character dynamics. By the final chapters, I was completely hooked. The ending was genuinely incredible, and the final reveals completely sold me on the story. I can’t wait for more from this author!

received this as an ARC.

Synopsis: I will likely read book 2! The FMC and MMC are likable, as well as their cadre. Setting was descriptive and made sense. Feel like it’s definitely a good intro to fantasy novel!

Beneath the Burning Throne is a romantasy with both MC as adults/over 30! (that’s big since many are around 20, give or take) The story follows our FMC and MMC with chapters from both POVs (and a handful from side characters to add context) as they navigate a war against Obscurem, dark shadow wielders, and a theft of the Prophecy from the Royal Archives. Our characters explore the feelings of found family, processing abuse/trauma, and feeling worthy in new love. Our MCs must face the Burning Throne and seal the prophecy to protect the kingdom/realm.

My Thoughts:
Overall, very enjoyable novel. However, the pick up was a little slow and felt disjointed. There were small time jumps that weren’t always clear they occurred until pages later. This caused some aspects of the story to not make sense for a hot minute. There were some sections that I needed to reread a few times, which is unusual for me. Our characters were extremely likable and lovable and our FMC is facing the effects of prior abuse and trauma and how that impacts her today. Our MMC is there to support her through the processing. I loved this representation and the ability to showcase the grief and guilt that these situations often make people feel.
As is common for many novels, the story doesn’t really pick up until the last 20-30% of the book. Again, for a book 1 in a series this is somewhat understandable as you need to world build, etc. I did feel that a lot of the first chunk of the book felt superficial/surface level and we didn’t really see in depth feelings or plots until the very end.
I’m interested to see how this all pans out in the following installment. Currently I feel I have some plot holes - what was with the mention of all the white&brown birds that seemed to be following FMC? Why the random mention of his mom and how she’s never brought up? We don’t know that as readers. Why is there no mention of FMC’s destruction at the end? Seti’s (MMC sister) is not enough of a character for her betrayal to have a last impact on the reader, so why was this made such a large point? I’m hoping some of these are answered as the story continues.

Thank you Netgalley & Robyn Jones for this e-arc

Unfortunately this was not for me, which is depressing because not only was drawn by the plot, but everything described by the reviewers before me made me think that I would LOVE this.

Like it’s everything I like:
- Enemies to lowers
- Captor x captive
- SHADOW MAGIC (ong I’ve been a day one since WATTPAD!)

This was ultimately a story that I found to lack nuance. I.e, the magic archives was intended to take days to get to, why was it less than four pages?
That was a missed opportunity for me—we could’ve had minimum twenty pages describing character dynamics, the audience could’ve seen how the Ignis Guard communicated with each other.

Leading into my second point: there is A LOT of being told what is happening, being told world building, being told about characters when it could’ve been shown.
I.e: a character in bed with a woman is TOLD to be a womanizer. The audience couldn’t just infer? Based off the nonchalant reaction of the character who found him? And the woman herself? It’s small details like that.

I felt that a lot of stuff was repeated, or spoonfed to me.
i.e, we are told what magic signatures are (repeatedly) & how missions starts. When the pages immediately before are detailing how a mission starts..
When a character uses a bow, the audience is told that the character prefers the bow. Right beside a character using a sword and a character using magic. Why would he have a bow otherwise?

At 10%, we are told Aeris is using her ability, but the audience could’ve seen the consequences to it. Though it appears that there are none.
87% with the guards—explaining what happened to them when the audience could’ve inferred had even a little more detailed about their appearance been used.

89%… character says he must’ve lost consciousness, because he WOKE up with a headache.
The usage of multiple POV’s led to events being repeated, just from a SLIGHTLY different perspective.

I do however, think that this would be a good book for a tween audience or fans of Alex Aster. The writing is easy to digest. This definitely reminded me of a book that would’ve made a KILLLING on Wattpad/Quotev.

I was super fortunate to have received an ARC of Beneath the Burning Throne by Robyn Jones! Thank you, Robyn, for giving me this opportunity! I thoroughly enjoyed BBT and cannot wait to read the next book!

My Review:
Beneath the Burning Throne delivers an emotionally gripping fantasy that leans into darker themes without losing its sense of purpose and momentum. I was hooked from beginning to end. While the story features exceptional character development, it also establishes a haunting atmosphere built on buried truths and moral uncertainty that barely ceases.

Our FMC, Elira, transforms from a broken prisoner to a powerful and unpredictable being that she never knew lived inside her all along. Robyn Jones does an amazing job by not rushing Elira's evolution while still providing just enough time for her powers to emerge beautifully. There is a rawness to her character that adds emotional depth, especially as she confronts her past trauma and uses it to shape her future decisions.

What stood out the most to me was the layered exploration of legacy and guilt. Owen is not your typical flawless MMC. Throughout his journey, he is forced to confront the reality of his bloodline's past while grappling with his own internal conflicts. Owen's struggles add to the growing political and magical tension that exists throughout Emberlyn.

The worldbuilding is rich, particularly in how it ties history and magic together. The idea of a kingdom built on a deliberate rewriting of truth is both chilling and believable. The element of prophecy is thoughtfully constructed and woven into the story to heighten the sense of inevitability. That said, the only reason I did not give this 5 stars was that the backstory occasionally took priority over the action. I feel there were a couple of opportunities where the action could have been stronger in order to maintain a fast-paced momentum.

Overall, BBT is a powerful and immersive read that balances character-driven storytelling with high-stakes fantasy. It doesn't shy away from difficult themes and leaves a lasting impression-one that lingers well after the final page! I highly recommend!!!!

Beneath the Burning Throne is set to release May 12th 2026!!!!

Thank you to Robyn for the e-ARC of her book!
This book had me in its grasp from the very first chapter. I literally did not want to put this book down.
The Ignis guard, who’s leader is Prince Owen go on a journey from the palace, after a prophecy goes missing. They run into a deadly shadow beast called Obscurem (who I picture as Lickers from Resident Evil 😂), but that’s beside the point.
One of those creatures attacks them and afterwards they find a woman. At first they just call the woman “Her”, because she can’t remember anything.
Owen is inexplicably drawn to her, and she to him. They take her along with them while traveling to the Royal Archives in hope of getting it back.
I loved every second of this book. The banter, the yearning of the two main characters I couldn’t get enough of. I absolutely love this world that Robyn has created.
I was shocked in some parts of the book that I didn’t see coming, my mind was blown when they were revealed.
The ending had me reeling. Plus there’s a couple of spicy scenes that were done so well, very sexy.
I can’t wait to get my hands on the next installment, but the first book isn’t even out yet. 😂😂 When the 2nd book releases I will run to grab it!
Some quotes I loved.

“Dierne. It means secret in the old language. You are a mystery—a mystery I intend to solve. And I always get my way, one way or another. Until then, that is what I shall call you.”

An icy calm fell over his face as he slowly asked, “Who the fuck did this to you?” His eyes burned with a rage I knew was not meant for me.

With a deep breath I said, “Shadow, I haven’t got the time for posturing. Shall we drop our trousers now and settle who’s most impressive? Rayner can be our judge.” I needed to keep his attention on me and not on the potential first real lead we’d had in weeks. Rayner turned his back to us as he choked on a laugh.

“I would give up everything I am for you.” Another step. “And now that I’ve found you, I don’t think I can bear to be away from you again.” One final step. We were inches apart now. His voice softened, tension pulling at the corners of his mouth. “If you’ll have me, that is.”

I think from like chapter 35 onward, I was just totally on the edge of my seat constantly just like ‘omg’, ‘nooo’, ‘yesss’, ‘nooo’. I 100% experienced every different emotion from that chapter onwards. This entire book was just totally amazing and totally shocking. My words are not really wording right now, like I don’t think I can express properly at how much I truly enjoyed this book. This is definitely a must read, I literally couldn’t put it down.

The world was definitely built up really world, and the first chapter totally just hooks you in straight away, I always love a good first chapter because it really just sets up the book. The characters as well, from the beginning, were set up amazingly, like you can straight away kind of grasp the personalities of each character that were introduced, and I mean, I love all of our characters, I mean obviously expect for Balor and the King, and that one character more so at the end, ifykyk, didn’t expect that one though. Our main characters are absolutely incredible. Owen is such a strong character, totally powerful and seriously loyal to those in his circle. I really enjoyed majority of the book being in his perspective and I’m so curious to see how his story progresses. His devotion to ‘her’ was just so so sweet, omg I love him. Our female main character was introduced with so much mystery, it was so much fun getting to know ‘her’. Her story and everything about her honestly was just so cool, she’s just totally badass and strong willed, I absolutely adore her and I loved watching her grow once she kind of had all the information. The side characters as well will totally make you fall in love with the found family aspect of this book. Totally loyal and such a tight group, chapter 17 though, I refuse to talk about the sadness I experienced that chapter, ifykyk.

I'm trying my best to write this without spoilers, but seriously, I had so much fun with this book. The storyline is so unique, and the twists totally leave you shocked and just 100% hanging for more. I cannot wait to see how this story continues. Thank you to the author for this incredible ARC <3.

I loved this book! The magical world really pulls you in, as does the political unease that slowly grows over the course of the novel. The characters (including a badass 30-year-old FMC) were great, the romance was compelling, and the plot kept me hooked till the very end – and beyond. I’m incensed that I have to wait for the second book!

It’s a light and fast-paced read -- the perfect escapist experience --- yet when I got to the end, I had this sudden realization that it’s also kind of deep? You can just read it for fun, and it’s a romance at its core, but if you’re someone who loves to read between the lines, I think it’s also an allegory for how men have to grapple with the inheritance of abusive systems of power before their romantic relationships with women can be in any way meaningful. The MMC is trying to be a good guy within a terrible structure, but I loved that the book doesn’t use the love story to wave off larger power dynamics or the harm that powerful people and institutions can do to women.

[Cue all of us readers mentally screaming “what a shame she’s f---ed in the head” and “f--- the patriarchy” together, as though we’re at the Eras tour.]

I also really enjoyed the way the author handled the fantasy elements. I loved the different characters’ contrasting styles of magic and the way the FMC’s magic unfolded and grew. The book was focussed more on the story and characters than on the logistics of world building, which is my preference, but I still found the magic and setting really compelling. The author has a talent for compressing these elements, so you don’t get pages of description bogging things down, yet what she does describe is really neat, so it sticks in your head. I was also surprised to find the fight scenes and monster appearances utterly riveting. I’m usually bored by action, but the brief and rare action scenes in this book are like powerful jolts of intensity.

Can’t wait for Beneath the Darkest Night, the next book in this duology!

This was a fun and fast-paced romantasy that kept me turning the pages. The premise is intriguing, and there’s a lot packed in—twists, betrayal and found family. It’s definitely one of those reads that’s entertaining without feeling overly heavy.

That said, it didn’t fully deliver on the depth I was hoping for. The biggest miss for me was the romance. It felt rushed and lacked that tension and buildup I love—I wanted more banter, more slow burn, and more time to really believe in Owen and Elira’s connection.

I also would’ve liked more development overall, especially for the FMC and her journey. Also a few moments—particularly toward the end—were a bit confusing in terms of timing and transitions as well.

Still, there’s a lot to enjoy here. The twists kept things interesting, the themes of loyalty and found family were strong. It’s definitely an enjoyable read, and I’m curious enough to continue the series.

"Fuck it.”

“It felt like fire and earth and wind. Inevitable. Like the world hadn't made sense until now, until him. Nothing had made sense.”

"Who the fuck did this to you?"

"Elira, hear my words: The day I try to kill you, is the day I take my own life. And I can assure you, I've no intention of leaving this world anytime soon. Not with you in it."

"I thought I'd saved you that day, but I think it was you who saved me."

Having finished the book, I feel like one of those people reminiscing on things going "I wish I knew then what I know right now".

3.5⭐/0.5🌶️

The book is written in dual POV, primarily the MMCs. Often times the timeline was a little confusing because the same event will be recounted in the next chapter by another character, so you're jumping between past and present which took a few paragraphs to figure out.

The relationship between Elira (our FMC) and bothe the Idris Guard (our Found Family) and the MMC (Owen) seems to develop out of nowhere. Trust seems to be an overarching theme, yet they seem to be willing to give it without a ton of work.

We found this random woman.

Owen: I don't trust her.

The Ignis Guard: Yay we're all best friends after a week together even though we're notoriously mean/dangerous and not trusting.

Elira: I lost my memories. Maybe. Perhaps I'm just hiding some. But I know I'm a survivor and I've handled worse, but I was tortured and twirl my hair.

Elira and Owen: After 3 interactions *most of which one of us is unconscious* we're obsessed with each other.

The gang: We like her, but now WE don't trust her.

Owen: She is my life. Everything else be damned.

I needed more banter. More character development or just something that makes the depth of their feelings and trust in each other feel like it was earned.

Chapter 35 it turns around. Maybe 60% through the book. This is when I was finally able to stop saying "wait, what" and began truly enjoying this book.

All of that being said, I will read Book 2. I love shadows era Elira. I want an entire book of that. I can't physically tolerate not knowing what happens next so I'm invested. I'm hoping the next book flows a little more smoothly but ultimately I enjoyed the concept.

Thank you Robyn Jones, Netgalley and Victory Editing for the opportunity to read this ARC.

First, I just want to say thank you for allowing me to be an ARC reader for this book. I genuinely enjoyed getting to experience this world early and there was a lot about this story that I really liked.

The worldbuilding and overall concept were probably my favorite parts. I loved the darker fantasy atmosphere, the shadow creatures, the prophecy storyline, and the overall theme of the kingdom. It created a really interesting foundation for the series and definitely kept me wanting to know more about the world and what is coming next.

I also enjoyed the FMC and MMC individually and thought the overall plot had a lot of potential. The story itself was engaging and there were moments that really pulled me in.

For me personally, I just wished there had been a little more depth and buildup, especially when it came to the relationship between the FMC and MMC. At times their dynamic felt a little sudden and kind of hot and cold without enough development in between to fully make me emotionally invested in them as a pair. I think with a bit more slow burn tension and more time spent building their connection, their relationship would have felt even more powerful and raw.

I also felt like some scenes moved pretty quickly and could have benefited from being a little more detailed and fleshed out. There were moments where I wanted to sit in the emotions, the tension, or the world a little longer instead of jumping ahead so fast.

That being said, overall I still really enjoyed the book. The concept is strong, the world is interesting, and I can definitely see the potential for this series to grow into something really immersive and exciting.

If you enjoy romantasy with darker fantasy elements, prophecies, shadow creatures, and kingdom intrigue, this is definitely worth checking out.

Beneath the Burning Throne is the first book in the Kingdom of Shadow series as well as Robyn Jones's debut novel.

I was intrigued with this book from the very first chapter. It hooked me and did not disappoint. The story is written in first person with multiple different POVs. It takes place in the magical kingdom of Emberlyn with a mysterious FMC and a fire-wielding fae prince MMC.

I loved the FMC’s journey from being found by the MMC on a mission to retrieve the stolen dark prophecy to learning about her strength and resiliency. She is facing past abuse and trauma but she does so while finding her independence. Although, she is still a mystery, one that the MMC must solve, his “Dierne.” You get the slow burn relationship building and the pull that they have for each other, but once it ignites, it is impossible to ignore. I’m also a sucker for “who did this to you” and we definitely get it in this book.

I enjoyed the world building and magical creatures within this book. While you focus mostly on the Obscurem, there are other creatures that come up. Learning about their magical lore was really intriguing.

The found family aspect in the prestigious Ignis Guard might be my favorite. They all have their own strengths and stories that are well placed throughout the book. So while the book focuses on the two main characters you still get the banter and interactions with the secondary characters.

Lastly, the plot twists… I was on the edge of my seat for some of these, there were ones that I saw coming but many that shocked me.

Thank you Robyn for the advanced readers' copy, I truly enjoyed this book and cannot wait for book 2!

Really enjoyed this debut - when can we expect book 2?!

This is a captivating read that has an awesome little twist mid book that I wasn't expecting at all.

I found this to be quite a unique plot in the genre so it had me hooked pretty quickly. I could easily have read more of this had it been longer as well so I wasn't in a hurry for it to end.

The first part is written mostly from the MMCs point of view, then both MMC and FMC in mostly alternating chapters following by a few chapters from some of the supporting characters. I would love for book 2 to explore more from the cadres point of view as the author has done really well at getting the reader invested in every character written about rather than just the MCs.

Loved that our FMC is over 30 and had her powers all along, she just needed to remember them. Too often in this genre the FMC is only powerful because of the MMC so I really enjoyed that element.

Overall it's well written and well thought out. The romance element could have been a bit slower, it felt a little rushed but that didn't seem to matter by the end of the book. It is quite light on some of the fantasy elements, which actually made it a great choice for me to read investment some pretty heavy-going fantasy novels. But perhaps it would be nice to learn more about the magic systemic book 2 - the way this novel has been written suggests that as you go further into the series the more you will discover about this so I wasn't too disappointed that it is not all explained in book 1.

Looking forward to book 2 and continuing on with the story!
