Mara Van Nacht has crafted a sequel that expands every corner of the world she introduced in Auras of the Fallen Stars. Truths of the Allied Guild is bigger, bolder, and more emotionally impactful, weaving together political intrigue, layered character arcs, shocking revelations, and a story that constantly keeps you questioning who can truly be trusted.
My favorite part of this book was the relationship between August and Zalya. Their friendship is one of the emotional foundations of the story, built on unwavering loyalty, trust, sacrifice, and a fierce determination to protect one another. In a genre where romance often takes center stage, it was refreshing to see Mara give just as much weight to the bonds between women. Paired with the book's unforgettable feminine rage, August, Zalya, and the women around them are allowed to be powerful, vulnerable, resilient, and unapologetically themselves, making their journeys incredibly satisfying to follow.
I also loved the multiple POV structure. Seeing the story unfold through August, Cliff, and the rest of the cast gave every revelation more weight while expanding both the world and the political landscape. Each perspective felt purposeful, adding another layer to the larger conflict and making every alliance, betrayal, and hard-earned victory hit even harder. Mara continues to build a rich, immersive world with an evolving magic system and twists that kept me eagerly turning the pages.
And can we talk about that ending? Mara Van Nacht absolutely pulled the rug out from under me. The final chapters had my heart racing, and that cliffhanger was genuinely insane. It left me equal parts shocked, heartbroken, and desperate to get my hands on the next book.
If you love epic fantasy with intricate political intrigue, found family, slow-burn romance, emotionally complex characters, unforgettable female friendships, and women fueled by righteous rage, Truths of the Allied Guild absolutely deserves a place on your TBR. 4.5⭐️ rounded up. That was a lot of fun! I thought it was even better than book 1.
What I loved:
- August’s personality really shined through. I felt her frustration at being kept in the dark. She’s funny, a little messy, and deeply cares for the people she loves.
- the tension and push and pull between August and all the guys but mostly with Cliff. My heart hurt reading every single interaction. Cliff was so frustrating but he pulled through in the end.
- the female friendships that blossomed or were nurtured between Bianca, Mia, Lor, and Zalya
- the world building expansion - we got vampires, more dragons, witches, and mentions of fae
- the picture of this world was painted so vividly in my mind
- of course the food and food descriptions and how August is so passionate about her profession
- that slow burn was glacial but I loved it
The only thing I had issues with - I wouldn’t say dislike - was the world building was sometimes hard for me to understand (I felt like that with book 1). Some of it was confusing but I still had a fun time. That cliffhanger, however, was not a fun time! I read it, turned the page, and then realized that was it! We’re so close to uncovering so many things about August and her lineage. I’m absolutely looking forward to the next book!

I received this book as an ARC and it is the second book in the series. I loved the first book in the series, but this book somehow managed to be even better. The pacing was perfect and kept me completely hooked from beginning to end.
I loved seeing how much the main character grew from the first book to this one. I also loved the dual POVs because they added so much depth to the story. And Cliff? He is absolutely book boyfriend material… even if it took him a minute to get there (lol).
That ending, though! The cliffhanger has me desperately needing the next book because I have to know what happens next!

Mara Van Nacht has officially made this one of my favorite fantasy series. I loved the first book, but Truths of the Allied Guild somehow managed to raise the stakes in every way. The story is packed with new revelations, unexpected twists, and so many moments that completely caught me off guard. Every time I thought I had things figured out, Mara proved me wrong.
One of my favorite things about this series is that it doesn't rely solely on romance to carry the story. The friendships feel just as meaningful, especially the bond between August and Zalaya. Watching their relationship continue to grow through everything they face together was one of the highlights for me. The found family aspect of this series is just as strong as the romance, and it makes the characters feel so real.
The multiple POVs continue to be one of the series biggest strengths. Every character has such a distinct personality and voice that it never feels repetitive, and seeing the story unfold from different perspectives makes the world and political intrigue even more engaging. You really get to understand everyone's motivations which made me even more invested.
And Cliff... I was not expecting this book to completely change my opinion of him. The slow burn is progressing so beautifully and every interaction had me wanting more. Mara knows exactly how to build tension without rushing the relationships, which makes every moment feel earned.
The world building continues tobe unique and expand without becoming overwhelming, and I loved uncovering more about the guilds, the politics, and the secrets hidden beneath everything. There was never a dull moment, and every chapter seemed to reveal another piece of the puzzle.
Then there's that ending. I should've known Mara wouldn't let us off easy. The cliffhanger left me staring at the final page wondering how I'm supposed to wait for the next book.
If you're looking for a fantasy that feels fresh, with incredible characters, layered relationships, political intrigue, and twists that actually surprise you, I can't recommend this series enough. It's quickly becoming an all time favorite, and I'll be thinking about this book until I can get my hands on the next one.

I genuinely didn't think Mara could top Auras of the Fallen Stars, but somehow Truths of the Allied Guild managed to do exactly that.
From the very first chapter, I was completely hooked. The pacing was excellent, balancing character growth, world expansion, emotional moments, and shocking revelations in a way that kept me turning pages long past when I should have gone to sleep.
One of my favorite additions in this installment was the dual POV. Getting inside both August's and Cliff's heads added so much depth to the story and completely changed the way I viewed certain events and characters. And Cliff? I finally understand all the hype. Consider me fully converted.
The character work continues to be one of the strongest aspects of this series. August remains such a relatable and easy-to-root-for protagonist, and I loved watching her growth throughout this book. The found family dynamics, strong female friendships, and slow-burn romance all shine without ever overshadowing the larger story.
Mara's writing is incredibly immersive and emotional. I laughed, cried, gasped, and spent an embarrassing amount of time theorizing after certain twists. Just when I thought I understood the resistance and the world around these characters, Mara completely pulled the rug out from under me.
And that ending? Absolutely criminal. I need book three immediately.

When I wrote my review of book one, Auras of the Fallen Stars, I had a glass of wine to channel my inner August. This time I needed it because I am pretty sure Mara has broken me!
They often say it is hard for a sequel to live up to the original, but this is certainly not the case with Truths. I was hooked from the start and by the end I was physically shaking from the final chapters and the cliff hanger that will be giving me sleepless nights until the next book.
Once again the world building, character development and the intricate plotting carry you into the story and along for the ride, and what a ride it is.
We kick off the story with everyone trying to deal with the aftermath of book one ,and from the start, the depth of the characters and the relationships between them is just outstanding. Mara manages to really capture the incredibly complex emotions and the resulting interactions in a way which is so unbelievably relatable that I became incredibly emotionally invested in all the characters (even the ones that I probably could have punched at times).
Without giving any spoilers, I can tell you there are dragons, some of the most heartwarming friendships, some very tense yearning and chemistry… not to mention a lot of action (of all kinds) and some epigraphs at the start of chapters that spiked my blood pressure as I tried to decode what they could be hinting at!
I have been dying to read this book and it far exceeded my expectations, without a doubt my book of 2026 so far and one I will be recommending to everyone and anyone that lets me talk for more than a minute!

Every chapter pulled me further into the story before completely pulling the rug out from under me with twists I really didn’t anticipate. And that ending… absolutely wrecked me—I closed the book needing book 3 immediately because I NEED to know what happens next.

Beta reader review: I got my answers from book one! I was left with so many questions after reading book one and Mara answered many! But… she left me with more (in a good way because I’m HOOKED). To quote the famous Mara “there are no plot holes in a series that is unfinished” is so true but MAN does that kill me because WTF was that ending is all I’ll say!? The MOST IMPORTANT question was left answered… okay probably not the most important… because you need to ask the right questions… (you’ll get that reference if you’ve read the book) book three is going to be a minute before it’s released too and idk if I’ll survive… 😜🤣 (yes I know I’m dramatic)
This book is dual POV and ITS SO GOOD! I hope the rest of the books in the series are dual POV! It added so much to the story! I learned so much about Cliff and now fully get all the hype and love he gets!! Dare I even go as far to say.. His POVs might be my favorite chapters.

I have no words to express the emotional toll this book took on me. I am still in disbelief, and I had to wait a while to think through a review.
The growth that I can see from book 1 is off the charts. The depth of each character, the immersing language, the connections and relativity you feel with the story.
I don’t think anything will top this.
Truths of the Allied Guild is everything a second installment should be. We get a deeper understanding of the world and magic system, we get so many questions answered (and of course, so many new ones). August grows more and more into the person she is destined to become. Relationships are tested, new friendships are discovered, the world as August knows it is expanded and there are secrets around every corner. This is a wild ride from beginning to end. It’s fast paced and action packed. The politics are intriguing. The slow burn is AGONIZING. It has every romantasy trope you love in a new and unique way.
I laughed. I cried. I panicked. I SCREAMED in Mara van Nacht’s DM’s. That ending?!?!? I will be on the edge of my seat until the next book. NO PLOT HOLES UNTIL THE SERIES IS OVER 😭 But I can’t wait!!!

Friendship, romance, Gods, dragons, magic, and a chef just trying to survive. Truths of the Allied Guild by Mara van Nacht is a sequel you’re not going to want to miss.
Truths of the Allied Guild picks up pretty soon after Auras of the Fallen Stars. We get to see a bit more of the world and uncover even more of the truth. The characters continue to develop in a very natural way. There is a bit of a love triangle (but really we all knew who she was going to choose 😉).
I absolutely adore the sisterhood theme and how important friendship is in this book. I’m in love with August and pretty much all of her friends. My favorite character by far though is Cliff. He is absolutely devoted in everything he does. I love the dynamic between him and August.
The pacing and writing style are well done. The ending for sure had me stressed out. Truths of the Allied Guild made me want to go back and reread book 1. And also time travel so I can read book 3.

August has survived the break and other traumas of book 1 to be faced with new truths in book 2. I like that she is stripped from her comfort zone (cooking) and forced to do new things, and develop as a character.

Truths of the Allied Guild gave me exactly what I wanted from a second book in the Descendants of the Stars series. It’s emotional, intense, and I couldn’t put it down. Mara Van Nacht really knows how to write women who are complicated, imperfect, and strong at the same time, and August is a great example. Her story after escaping is heartbreaking, messy, and completely gripping. Seeing her deal with both real and emotional struggles made her feel like one of the most real and relatable romantasy heroines I’ve read in a while.
The emotions in this book are intense. August’s search for her missing friends, the pain and confusion of the love triangle, and her struggle to figure out where her heart belongs kept me hooked. Van Nacht also shows trauma and healing in a way that really stood out to me. The characters’ pain feels real, which makes their stories even more powerful.
The world-building is amazing. Ancient secrets, living myths, and unfolding history make the world feel huge and immersive. The writing is atmospheric and has just the right mix of mystery and slow-burn tension. The artwork also helped me picture the characters and settings more clearly.
I’m completely hooked on this series, and I can’t wait for the third book!

Holy crap! This book jumps right back in where book one left off with all of the mixed feelings high emotions. August is emotionally unstable and confused and frustrated, all reasonably so. While everyone around her is just trying to figure out life and how to solve the issues that ended book one. This book brought so much joy for me to read. I’d love the complex magical society. I love the tension the team characters, and how the author is able to give that feeling to the reader. I can’t wait to read book 3! That cliffhanger at the end is amazing and makes me thirsty for more!!!

This book! Oh my! This book definitely caught me by surprise! Book 1 Auras Of The Fallen Stars was a bit slower for me but this one totally packs a punch. This book picks right off from book one.
The world building gets larger, and the characters grow more. This book definitely has a lot more character development and it's NOT just the FMC and MMC but with all the other characters. I love it when a book is well rounded and everyone gets some attention. This makes such a strong and amazing found family! You get to know all of them.
Cliff...oh boy...it took him quite some time but eventually he gets there lol. Be prepared for the slowwwww burn, it hurts. But I love Cliff so much!

Stunning story development
From reading the first book and starting to see the threads I was captured. After reading this second book I am fully hooked.
It should not be read stand alone, please read the first book.
The additional POVs and stories change the pace of this book giving it a depth that felt missing in the first.
Highly recommend and can wait for the next installment.

Mara, if you ever wanted to just let August be, now would be the time. The amount of stuff that happened, and the amount of times I went “I’m at 70%, why does it feel like 30?” is wild.

Ohkay so this book was good..... but it would have been a lot better if I had known it was the second book in a series. I was confused for a lot of and not understanding a lot of what's going on and what theyre talking about has happened......

I jumped in so quick because I wanted to know what happened from the first book, Auras of the Fallen Stars. You meet the same characters and new ones as well. More dragons. More magic. More mystery with some questions answered. More yearning. The story is a bit more engaging and we get more of August's backstory and OF COURSE more Rowan! The dynamic between Cliff and August and Blaine makes me giggle, but I definitely want her with Cliff. Maybe she will choose herself? You'll have to read to find out. And don't think you will get away from this woman's torturous cliffhangers because you absolutely will.
I had the extreme pleasure of being an arc reader for Truths, albeit a not very good one. (I'm late 😭) Thank you, Mara, for allowing me the opportunity and I cannot wait until the next book!

Amazing Ending
I really enjoyed this book. You really get to learn a lot more about the characters and about the history and why the FMC August is so important. I love the banter that goes on between August and Cliff. I am definitely looking forward to the next book. I can’t wait to see what happens.

I enjoyed the story. I had more of an idea who the characters were this time. It’s a bit of a heavy read for me , but the story is well worth it. I cannot wait for the 3rd installment of this series.
