Adam Foreman was a pig farmer... until one mistake cost him everything.
In a brutal dark fantasy world sealed inside an immense mountain basin known as The Bottoms, Adam watches his parents dragged toward execution for a crime he committed. When a desperate escape ends in bloodshed and loss, Adam flees into the forbidden caves of the Rim of the World, where he awakens an ancient, forbidden magic never meant for mankind.
The return of magic does not bring salvation. It brings corruption.
As Adam struggles to survive and control a devastating power bound to his soul, a demonic entity known as Sallos begins spreading influence across the realm—seducing rulers, enslaving the desperate, and twisting magic into something monstrous. Every spell carries a cost. Every choice risks damnation.
Caught between grief, vengeance, and the corruption growing within himself, Adam must decide what kind of man he will become… before the world is reshaped in darkness.
A dark epic fantasy novel perfect for listeners who love flawed heroes, dangerous magic systems, moral consequence, and grim worlds where power always demands a price.
This is the beginning of The Corruption Within series.
"The Corruption Within" by C.L. Kan is a dark fantasy novel that explores morally complex stories, making it ideal for readers interested in ethical dilemmas and atmospheric worlds. Adam Foreman's descent from pig farmer to man linked to forbidden magic comes across as both monumental and achingly real in Kan's brief but expressive prose, which strikes a balance between gut-wrenching detail and quiet, heartbreaking moments. The narrative voice prioritizes clarity over decoration, yet never loses its atmospheric touch. The Bottoms and the Rim of the World are described with just the right amount of detail to make the threat real, while also leaving room for imagination to fill the caverns. The novel's pacing is spot-on; as Adam struggles with his grief and the corrupting force within him, the tempo shifts from fast, violent passages to calmer, reflective ones, keeping the reader on the edge of their seat and raising the emotional stakes. Instead of relying on spectacle, Kan raises ethical tension via the system of magic, which is treated with moral rigor; every spell has a cost. As corruption and political seduction grow, the opposing force becomes more apparent, heightening the feeling that individual decisions have far-reaching consequences and change the world for the worse. What stuck with me was the way Kan uses everyday human experiences, like a farmer's remorse, the burden of seeing loved ones suffer, or the personal calculation of retribution, to ground high-stakes fiction. If you are looking for a series that combines empathetic, character-driven storytelling with danger and consequences, this is it. It is a dark and serious debut. Expect nuanced morality and gut-wrenching thrills in Kan's debut novel.
As usual Bobby Garrison did an excellent job of narration. I would listen to him read the dictionary! The story was good and I love the struggle to be good. The inner turmoil of fighting evil within when you just want to be a good person. I will say I did see the big reveal of betrayal coming well before we knew the truth.
