Bless the Lord: Reading the Psalms for Lent

Rate this book
The book of Psalms is a curated assortment of poems, prayers, and songs that show us how we can interact with God no matter the situation, emotion, or experience. As a collection, the psalms call us to worship God in response to whatever life may bring. Even in their most anxious, grievous, or agonizing moments, the psalms awaken our hope of finding true, everlasting peace in the Lord. As we read the book of Psalms for Lent, it will stir in us praise for the God who gave Himself to be our redemption. The psalms will help us remember Christ's suffering, connecting us to Him in grief and worship and looking to Him as our strength and the object of our adoration. And as these songs show us how to face the darkness of the world and our own sin, we respond by giving Jesus, our Savior, all glory and honor for His wondrous work.

She Reads Truth is a worldwide community of women who read God's Word together every day. Founded in 2012, She Reads Truth invites women of all ages to engage Scripture through curated daily reading plans, as well as online conversation led by a vibrant community of contributing writers. This community of “Women in the Word of God every day” represents a long list of cities and countries, a variety of backgrounds and traditions, and countless real-life stories. But there is a commonality that binds us: we believe God's Word is Truth. So we read. Every day we read a new passage together—working our way through books of the Bible, topics that matter, and seasons of the Church calendar. We engage with God's Word and with each other. And we keep coming back, on the hard days and the good days, because God and His Word never change, regardless of our circumstances.

This is a beautifully planned Lent study with space for reflection each day. Each week there was also a guided way to pray one of the Psalms from the week.

One of the challenges given was to underline attributes of God in each days reading. The words faithful, love, and justice were the three I found most often. The delight in God’s Word was tangible for me in a season of physical healing after major surgery. Awe and Wonder in who God is was magnified through Psalms.

This is a beautifully planned study to read through the Psalms during the Lenton season. It is self-reflective and has standard questions at the end of each lesson. There is no commentary to this study—-so if you are looking for a “lesson”—this is not the study for you. I loved how the Psalms were planned out for daily reading but was looking for more “lesson” material in the study.

This one was tough for me. While reading through the entire Book of Psalms was a worthy pursuit, I struggled to find how it was one pertinent to the season of Lent. It then abruptly shifts from Maundy Thursday forward to relevant Holy week Scripture. Awkward.

The last few years I have been wondering what works and doesn’t for Lent. I enjoyed reading the Psalms this year.

Wow. Never have I ever read the whole book at once. It was intense, but very good.
