This book explores the country Italy. This informational picture book/series takes the ABCs to explore popular places, people and things about the country. Each page is a letter of the alphabet and has something to do with the country. For example: A is for art because Italy is a world center for art and artists. The glossary, index and fun facts are three qualities that drew me to the book. I believe it students would enjoy reading this book to gain a background knowledge of the country. There is a section in the back titled, “Italy in Brief” this section discusses the countries major holidays, climate, transportation, area, population, etc. This book is filled with information about the country that is presented in a clear manner that would draw student’s attention. It is a well-done informational book that would allow students to explore the country. There are several books in this series that explore countries over the entire world! This specific book would be great to have in the classroom so students can learn a little bit more about Italy. It would be a great beginning book for students to explore a nonfiction piece of literature.

The land, history, culture, peoples of Italy and more are described, from “A is for art” and “B is for boot-shaped” to “Y is for yarn” and “Z is for ziti.” Occasional “fast facts” appearing throughout offer additional information. Colorful, margin-to-margin paintings appear on each page. Appendices include a section offering facts in brief, pronunciations for a few Italian phrases, a glossary, index, and further resources. While the information presented is too limited for extensive student research, the variety of topics provides an interesting introduction.
