Within the clutches of the Great Glacier, the humans of Isiir struggle for survival. The cold is not their only enemy, powerful warlords threaten the peaceful towns at every turn. Even they pale in comparison to the war that lay in the shadows all around them as the Elder races battle for hegemony over the land.
Great descriptions of the people and their surroundings. I could see the ice in the glacier in my minds eye. I recommend this book for everyone and I am going to get the second book right now!
I wasn't sure I was going to like this book when I started it. Fantasy is not my favorite genre. As I got into it, however; it grew on me. The story revolves around Devyn, a former warrior who has settled into a much simpler life in a small harbor town with a family he adores. Devyn is cursed with misfortune upon misfortune and it is a miracle he survives. He is forced into service with a makeshift army and led into an icy world of unimaginable horrors. There is a considerable amount of gore and violence in the book but it seemed to fit into the story. This is a worthwhile read if you like swordplay, monsters and adventure.
This could have been good, but there were so many errors - syntax, tense, punctuation, spelling, missed or unnecessary words that it was quite painful to read. I struggled through to the end but coming across so many errors in the first few pages of the sequel was just too much. Sorry again - I hate feeling like this about something someone has obviously laboured long and hard over but it was too hard going for me.
Bloody cold read. Dreams of gold lead armys to scour the great glacier. The glacier that swallowed and swaddled a once mighty kingdom. What they uncovered was a stillborn nightmare from the deep, from the dark, from the cold....
I am a little torn about how to review this book. I gave it 3 stars for the middle ground.
The book is obviously the first in a series by the way it's written (obvious "Book One" aside). The main character is a retired soldier who tried to settle down but was forced back in by an invading army. Thankfully, this did not become a "one man prevails against the entire army" story. He struggled with his duties and past life.
The two immortal characters are introduced in the same way, by going through weapon training forms. A little underwhelmed by their introductions, but they were later developed enough into their opposites.
The premise is that an ancient evil has awoken to take its revenge on the world. Nothing new there. The nuances in how it will proceed might set it apart from other similar novels.
The frozen undead could have been transported right out of the White Walkers from the TV version of Game of Thrones (complete with the undead master raising recently fallen humans), but also the Walking Dead (infected by bites). It was personally hard to separate those shows while reading.
C.J. LaPolla brings a whole new concept to evil. Zombie like creatures, semi-immortals revered as Gods, war lords and the never ending legends of gold and riches.
When the glacier collides with Northspire, troops are sent to find the riches of the legends. What they find are creatures and demons that cannot seem to be defeated. And now they are loose.
I loved Within the Ice. I instantly fell into the world and its people. The main characters were interesting and I never knew exactly what to expect next. Definitely worth the read. I was very impressed with this authors first novel!
