Sometimes love isn’t part of the plan. Sometimes it’s the backup plan.
Lucas Hale built his entire life around football. The franchise quarterback. The GOAT. The man everyone on his team counts on.
Recovering from a devastating shoulder injury, the veteran quarterback signs with the Lone Star Rebels for one last chance to prove he still belongs in the league.
There’s just one problem—Dr. Emery Porter.
The Rebels’ new injury specialist isn’t impressed by Lucas’s charm—or his determination to push through pain.
She’s seen the scans. She knows the damage. And if she clears him to play, it might mean destroying his career for good.
But the more time they spend together, the more dangerous everything becomes. For Emery’s career. For Lucas’s future. And the harder it becomes to remember where professional boundaries end—and where love begins.
Because if Lucas keeps playing, he could lose everything. And if Emery stops him . . . she might lose the man she’s fallen for.
Sometimes the biggest risk isn’t losing the game. It’s losing what you never thought you wanted.

1. Had such high hopes, and then the references to his "active" past began to constantly be referenced. Meanwhile, she's newly divorced from a guy that insulted and disrespected her. Once again, an imbalance in their back stories. Because that's new. *rolls eyes* 2. I get that Lucas loves playing and wants to go out on top. That being said, when Emery tells him what his MRI results mean, he disagrees with her. Even though all her years of education and experience tell her what WILL happen, he says it MIGHT. He thinks she's great at her job...until it comes to him and being told something he doesn't WANT to hear and CAN'T accept. Now she doesn't know what she's talking about and he pleads that she not only ignore her duty stated in her contract to be truthful regarding the players' medical information but to let him continue playing knowing what it will do to him and COULD do the next time plays. Getting what HE wanted, his career, is more important to him than trusting her and the risk to her career. Honestly, with both of the thoughts I've stated, I really wish I wouldn't have read this. The first, fine. I hated it, but not a total deal breaker. The second, though? His absolute selfishness in choosing himself over her, even when she's doing everything to save him from lifelong pain is too much to forgive and forget. 3. Thankfully, before the end, Lucas realized what Emery would have to do (telling the owner, coach, etc. that Lucas is officially done medically) and what that knowledge was costing her, and saved her frkm having to voice it. That redeemed him a little bit.

This was a standout dual POV Football sports romance between Lucas, a veteran pro quarterback with chronic pain trying to recover from a shoulder injury and Emery, the team’s new injury recovery physician he can’t help falling for.
I loved that we get a look into an older player trying to stay in the game and fight through pain even though it might cost him long term. Plus women in sports medicine isn’t a common subject either and Emery fights hard to prove her worth. Both are trying to earn their spots on the team and neither is looking for love but it finds them anyways.
The forbidden love/conflict of interest in their relationship gave the emotional stakes lots of depth and had me rooting for them to figure things out and get their HEA. This was excellent on audio with duet narration by Kit Swann and Lance Greenfield.
Available now and perfect for fans of authors like Julia Jarrett, Tessa Bailey or Meghan Quinn. Many thanks to Valentine PR and the audio for an ALC in exchange for my honest review.
I have been a huge fan of Kristy's since I discovered her books over ten years ago. One of the many things I enjoy about her writing is that her stories are always unique and you can tell that she really wants them to be as authentic and real as possible.
The Backup Plan is the first book in her next series, Lone Star Rebels. This is a slow burn and I love that it's not because Lucas nor Emery are ignoring their chemistry (there is plenty of flirting) but it's because Emery doesn't want to jeopardize things.
I love that Kristy keeps these characters true to their age and maturity. There's no miscommunication or lack of communication and that just made their story all the more real and authentic.
I really enjoyed how Emery and Lucas' story unfolded and progressed naturally. This story ticked all the boxes for me and I cannot wait for the next book in this series.
Total swoon! Lucas Hale turns out to be a bit of a swoon worthy hero who also has an ego and a few issues to work through.
Meanwhile, Dr. Emery Porter is fierce in her own way. She has her own share of things to work past after years of mentally battling her ex's barbs and putdowns. I want to rage against how she handles herself and the situation after their first meeting, but I can't. I wish the world were different, but sadly, this does reflect reality. 😔
Him I loved immediately. Loving her took a few chapters, but she won me over. Once I was in their camp, there was no turning back!
All I know is I can't walk away when she's in this state. -- Lucas Hale
The darkest moments occur early on. From there, this becomes a mildly angsty, smexy, and really good story with some humor and plenty of heart. I love that Lucas is there for his teammates even when they've done nothing to earn it.
I'm totally sold on this series and look forward to more. Some of the situations mimic reality, like QBs not knowing when to retire, cocky rookies, and a woman trying to make herself invisible to fit into a man's vision of her. I was also left wondering how close to reality are the reactions when players are no longer viable on the team / field? I expect they're in the ballpark of what's here.
I listened to the audio book. The narrators, Lance Greenfield and Kit Swann, are in duet, and you know how much I love a good duet coupling. They definitely lived up to my expectations.

Honestly, if K. Bromberg writes it, you already know it’s going to deliver and The Backup Plan was no exception. This was an easy five-star read for me.
What really stood out was the way the relationship developed. The friendship and trust between these two characters felt so genuine, and it created the perfect foundation for something deeper. Nothing felt rushed or forced, it grew organically and made everything more believable. Not once did I think, “well this doesn’t actually happen”.
At its core, The Backup Plan is a beautiful reminder that life doesn’t always go the way we expect, but that doesn’t mean it won’t work out exactly how it’s meant to. Just because one door closes doesn’t mean another, even better one, isn’t waiting to open.
It was heartfelt, emotional, and full of those moments that just stick with you long after you finish the last page.
This book is a good read! Emorie & Lucas were such a cute couple. This is dual POV, my favorite type of book. This was a sweet slow burn with a bit of spice thrown in. I loved their connection & how they worked thru their issues with their workplace romance. I love how KB brought Austin to life in this story. It made me want to go visit there! Lucas POV of a football player and the sacrifices they make & their devotion to the game gave me all the “feels” for him. Emorie has to make such a tough decision - follow her head or her heart?

What a wonderful start to a new sports romance series from K Bromberg!
I fell hard and fast for Lucas. He is an aging superstar football player determined to play again despite shoulder surgery. His passion for his sport and knowledge make him a key member of the team and despite being brought in to mentor the new generation of players, he has a lot left to give.
Emery was amazing! She had a fresh start in her life as the team’s extremely qualified doctor/PT.
The Backup Plan was a wonderful, close proximity romance with heat and heart in abundance. A delightful beginning to what promises to be another hit series from this amazing author!
Football player Lucas Hale was given another chance to play the game he loved so much. After an awful shoulder injury, Lucas was offered to sign for Lone Star Rebels team. What he didn't know was that there will be another new employee, Dr. Emery Porter, a woman driven by ambition and knowledge, who wanted to excel in her domain. The chemistry between them was undeniable, but can they make things work when Emery has to choose between the man she cares about and the principles of her job? Because what she found out about Lucas's injury was far from what she hoped for.
I simply adooored these two. Lucas and Emery just clicked so well together even from their first encounter. I loved that forbidden side of their relationship, keeping everything a secret because they worked together and because Emery was Lucas's doctor. Emery was for sure a huge inspiration because of how intelligent she was and how she wanted to be the best in her field of work. It was pretty hard for her to choose the right thing to do in the situation she found herself in with Lucas's prognosis, but she had no choice but to decide what's better for both of them. On the other side we had Lucas, who wanted nothing more than to continue playing the sports he loved and the only thing that brought him comfort, even if that meant to be in a high risk of injuring himself. It was heartbreaking to see him struggle so hard, but I was glad that he had Emery in his corner, to help him ease the pain he was in, physical and mental. They were amazing together, offering me so many amazing moments.
This book has shown a different side of sports romance, having a broken MMC, not the typical player who knows only success. It was inspiring, emotional and full of sweet moments between our main characters. The side characters played a huge role in this story, each of them having a different impact on the way their story ended.
I must thank Kristy and Valentine Pr for accepting me for this beautiful e-ARC. I loved it so much!🩵

If you're in the mood for a sports romance that has as much heart as it does heat, this is a great pick.
Lucas and Emery felt like actual humans instead of just romance tropes. It is rare to find a story where the characters are in their thirties and actually act like it, navigating career pivots and old heartbreaks with genuine maturity. I loved the spark between them from that very first encounter at the bar, and seeing a veteran quarterback deal with the physical toll of the game while a female doctor fights for respect in the NFL made the stakes feel high and grounded.
The slow burn in this story is top-tier because it is built on a foundation of real friendship and professional risk rather than silly misunderstandings. Since their connection is technically a conflict of interest, the tension stays thick throughout the whole book. I did find myself wishing for just a little more momentum in the middle, but watching Emery reclaim her confidence after a rough past relationship was so empowering that I couldn't stop reading. Their chemistry is magnetic, yet it never feels rushed or fake.
Overall, this was a heartfelt and slightly angsty journey that reminds you how beautiful life can be even when your original plans fall apart. It hits all the right notes with plenty of heat and a lot of soul, making the forbidden aspect of their romance feel earned. While I wanted a tiny bit more from the ending, I am totally sold on this new series.
This was a great start to the series and left me excited to see what else these Lone Star Rebels have in store.

Huge thank you to K. Bromberg & Valentine PR for the ARC! 😍 All my bookish thoughts are completely my own. ✨
I really loved this take on a sports romance - hero at the end of his career and a team doctor. I loved that she explored the psychological aspect of leaving the profession, wanting to do in their own terms.
Low on the spice and slow burn, but the evolution of the characters and their story more than made up for it
This is the first book in a new series, and this is Lucas and Emery’s story. Lucas is a veteran NFL quarterback, who suffered a devastating shoulder injury, and he signs up with the Lone Star Rebels, but his stumbling block is Emery, who is the team sport medicine doctor. Emery has seen the scans and the damage to Lucas’ shoulder, clearing him to play could destroy his career for good. This is a well written easy to read, slow burn, emotionally charged story, with friendships, hope, resilience, workplace romance, humour, witty banter, making choices, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, tragic, and unpredictable addictive page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
I love that even though this is about a pro athlete and a PT doctor, they are normal people. The author wove a story that made you feel like you could be a part of it as unfolds.
This story starts out good from the start, with a shady loser trying to take advantage of Emery in a bar, and Lucas saving the day. I can't say what exactly happened, but just know after reading it, you KNOW what kind of man you are in for.
Lucas just wants to go out on his terms in the NFL, but his shoulder says otherwise. Emery just wants to forget everything her ex ever said to her, and prove her worth at her dream job. Watching these two in their early 30s pivot and try to rebuild their lives....while simultaneously fighting some intoxicating chemistry, made for a very interesting story.
I have loved every book written by K.Bromberg that I’ve read, so I guess you can say I’m a big fan! This one was so cute on audio! I loved Emery and Lucas dynamic! The chemistry was there, the instant connection was everything, and Emerys need to protect Lucas even though she knew his chances of playing football and fighting through the pain weren’t very high! Lucas wanted to end his career in his own terms and wasn’t going to let pan slow him down, emery being the team doctor did everything in her power to ensure he could heal as much as he could!
The Backup Plan is book 1 in the new Lone Star Rebels series and follows aging quarterback, Lucas Hale as he falls for his team's doctor, Emery Porter.
Lucas has only ever wanted to play football. Since he was a kid he found escape in sports, especially football. It was his escape from his everyday life. He listened and learned from other parents, coaches and players. He was the player that everyone wanted on their team.
Emery married while she was in college. She went on to medical school and has made quite the name for herself in treating sports injuries. In addition, she is well versed in physical therapy. She is well respected by her colleagues, but, sadly, not her husband. She has chosen to make a clean break, and move to Austin and the Rebels.
Lucas and Emery meet in a compromising situation. He is the white knight she needs at a time when her defenses are down. Lucky for her, he is concerned enough to step in and get her out of a tricky situation. Having no idea who the other is, he makes sure she is safe and settled for the night.
Emery has been through so much in her life. So when Lucas is a perfect gentleman she is stunned, but so appreciative. Until she finds out he is her new special project.
Lucas needs Emery. More than he wants to admit. Without her approval, he does not know what he is going to do. He came to play football, not warm the bench. What he does not know is that if anyone can get him back on the field, it is her. She has spent her entire career studying techniques that will provide maximum rehabilitation of injuries. But she requires complete honesty from him about any issues he experiences during workouts, practices and games. Can he do that? Only time will tell.
While he may not be QB1, Lucas proves himself to the coaches and his teammates by being able to read the defense. He is able to show them what the set up is and what the offensive play should be to balance it. He is also able to tame the current QB1, Cole. Cole is young and cocky. But he sees what Lucas is showing him and the initial animosity is thawing.
Lucas and Emery begin to build a friendship while working together. They are neighbors, so they tend to see each other regularly. When Lucas starts running with Emery in the mornings, it is a time for them to just be. They can talk or not.
But when things start to progress in their relationship, they need to be careful at work. She is a professional and has worked hard to earn the respect of her coworkers and she refuses to lose it because of an affair.
But things go haywire sending Lucas and Emery into a tailspin.
What will the new normal look like for these two? Will their secret be outed? What are the ramifications of everything that has happened?
Emery spoke to me in this story. Trying to prove herself in a man's world is not an easy task. Being taken seriously for your knowledge and expertise is not easy with people who are already established in the workplace. But she has the knowledge and know how to get the job done. However, I found her methods a little "mousy". She was not as assertive as I would have expected. Yes she proved herself, but I felt like there were some who were not respectful towards her. But setting them straight was not her way. She did it quietly and over time with results.
Lucas was brought in with one purpose, but he also wanted another chance. He proved himself in so many ways in this story, but when times were tough he stepped away. Yes he needed to deal with his demons, but he also should have communicated better.
These two just work. Emery knows Lucas's tells when it comes to injuries, pain, discomfort. She also knows when he is holding back from her. But Lucas respects Emery's need for space. I see these two going far in life together, as a team. Both in life and in work. If they ever leave the Rebels, I see them transferring jointly.
I will admit I would love to see more of Lucas's brother and Emery's best friend. Not necessarily together. But I am intrigued by both of these side characters.
Kit Swann is such a joy to listen to. I have enjoyed her in so many roles, and this one is no exception. She take on the characters she is portraying makes her a narrator I enjoy listening to. It has been awhile since I have listened to Lance Greenfield and I felt like it was coming home with his take on Lucas Hale. He is able to bring out the determined football player while giving Emery his softer side and protecting her.
I received the ARC of The Backup Plan by K. Bromberg, the first in the Lone Star Rebels series, and it completely captivated me from its opening pages. This sports romance delivers everything I crave in the genre—high-stakes tension, deeply layered characters, and a slow-burn romance that explodes into something unforgettable—while weaving in authentic themes of resilience, second chances, and the cost of chasing dreams.
Plot: The story kicks off with Lucas Hale, a veteran NFL quarterback whose career hangs by a thread after a devastating shoulder injury. Signing with the Austin Rebels as a mentor to rookie phenom Cole Valor, Lucas is determined to prove he's not done yet, even if it means swallowing his pride as the backup. Enter Dr. Emery Porter, the brilliant new sports medicine specialist fresh from a messy divorce, hired to rehab serious injuries and optimize the team's protocols. Their paths cross dramatically when Lucas heroically intervenes during a dangerous night out for Emery, unaware she'll soon hold his football future in her expert hands.
What follows is a masterclass in tension: professional boundaries clash with undeniable attraction as Emery uncovers the true extent of Lucas's shoulder damage through MRIs and diagnostics, forcing her to weigh her duty against her growing feelings. Subplots like Cole's reckless antics, team dynamics, and Emery's quest for respect in a male-dominated field add layers without overwhelming the central romance. Bromberg nails the football world—from grueling practices and roster cuts to the mental toll of injury—with details that feel researched and immersive, making every play and scan pulse with urgency.
Characters: Lucas is the standout: a "golden boy" turned underdog, his cocky exterior hides vulnerability from years of pressure, past Super Bowl glory, and fears of irrelevance. His quiet acts of leadership—like pulling Cole from a bar disaster—reveal a generous heart, and his banter with Emery crackles with wit. Emery is equally compelling—a fierce professional rebuilding after an unsupportive ex, she's no damsel but a force who demands respect while grappling with loneliness and ethical dilemmas. Their chemistry simmers from stolen morning runs and near-kisses to steamy, consent-driven passion that prioritizes emotional connection. Supporting cast like Coach Brooks and trainer Owen ground the story, while Cole's arc adds mentorship depth.
Feels and Story: The book builds the narrative with expert pacing: early sparks from their chance encounter evolve into flirtatious tension amid rehab sessions and team barbecues, where professional lines blur during late-night confessions and heated phone calls. Conflicts feel organic—Emery's scans reveal accelerating damage that could end Lucas's career, mirroring her own sacrifices, while roster pressures and team drama heighten the stakes. The romance hits fever pitch without rushing, balancing swoony moments with raw honesty about love versus ambition. Twists like Lucas's hidden pain and Emery's program innovations keep pages turning, culminating in a resolution that honors growth over easy fixes.
Final Verdict: The Backup Plan by K. Bromberg is high-tension-sports-romance at its best: emotionally resonant, sexy, and smart, with a football backdrop that elevates the trope without clichés. If you love forbidden-workplace-romance with heart and heat, this one is definitely a must-read! Highly recommend for sports-romance readers! Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this wonder ahead of its release and am so excited for everyone to meet Emery and Lucas! ♥︎ ♥︎ ♥︎
This girl loves sport romances!! Give me football or give me hockey and this girl is in heaven!! So, when I heard that Kristy was working on a new sport (football) romance I was thrilled. Don’t get me wrong because anything Kristy writes, I’m there. Furthermore, I cannot emphasize just how sensational The Backup Plan is!! Have you ever just fallen for a MMC from the start of a book… well, let me tell you that is exactly what happened to me!
Lucas Hale, MMC is entering his 14th year in the NFL. Football has been the cornerstone of his life playing since a young boy. Through his high school and college years his talent became apparent, he would be a valued quarterback in the NFL. Once drafted Lucas's talent continues to excel - as a leader, his consistency, his reliable, and with the vision to see how the other team thinks! Then he suffers a catastrophic injury, not sure if he’ll ever throw again. Given the chance to prove he can still play he signs with the Lone Star Rebels.
Then there is Emery Porter, MFC… it’s actually Dr. Emery Porter, Doctor of Sports Medicine. Recently divorced from a husband that was ungracious to her, Emery was more than ready to begin a new life. So, when offered her dream job Emery moved across country to Austin, TX. She had signed on as the team doctor for the Lone Star Rebels and would be rehabbing the players with the most complex injuries.
As you have most likely figured out, Emery and Lucas will meet at the sports complex. Imagine the surprise when Emery and Lucas come face to face! The shock, the surprise and coming to the realization that Lucas was the man who came to her rescue from a compromising situation the night before. Furthermore, there is now a line that has to be accepted as this has is now becoming a patient/doctor relationship. The implications of mixing the two could have profound effects on both their careers with the Rebels.
Examining Lucas finds that he is not being 100% truthful about his injury. As a seasoned franchise athlete who lives with pain playing. The big thing with Lucas is that his injury could become a permanent, life changing condition if he doesn’t adhere to the treatment that is prescribed to him by Emery. The only problem is that Lucas is so stoic it’s hard to tell if he’s being honest about his injury and his pain. Making it harder for Emery. Lucas is so eager to get back on the field, playing that he fails to see she is really on his side. But another dilemma arises for both of them… after a new MRI shows that one more injury could bring about a catastrophic, permanently debilitating injury to him.
The question now is does Emery approve him to play and risk an injury or does she cave to his yearning passion to play?
It’s a total crap shoot and she knows it, and so does Lucas!
There are so many things that I loved about The Backup Plain. First, I totally fell for Lucas the night he rescued Emery!! Proving not only what a good guy he was but also, he took charge of a situation that could have gone really bad. Loved how both Emery and Lucas could not get the other off their minds too. Neither were looking for a relationship but working together makes it so easy for them to become friends and I’m sure finding out they are neighbors did too. The Backup Plan is truly a beautifully written “slow burn” romance filled with emotions and complexities that make it one of the best books I’ve read this year!
Quotes: "Sometimes love isn’t part of the plan. Sometimes it’s the backup plan.”
“Well, sometimes, right in the middle of everyday life, love gives you a fairy tale when you least expect it.”
The Backup Plan is the very reason why K. Bromberg has become a forever go-to author for me. She combines lusty romance with the intricacies of the sports world beautifully. Both Dr. Emery Porter and legendary quarterback Lucas Hale are on delicate ice as they begin new careers with the Lone Star Rebels. A football team with a cocky young QB who knows they can rely on Lucas to be not only his mentor but his stable backup. With Emery as their crack physician/physical therapist, the Rebels are destined for greatness. But when sparks start to fly between Emery and Lucas and his reconstructed shoulder starts to give him more trouble than he counted on, I was very curious as to whether these two could weather a potential professional storm while trying their damnedest not to fall hard for the other.
This book is definitely part of my 'le swoon' category. These two start off with Lucas rescuing new-to-town Emery from a potential grape situation. He takes care of her even though he doesn't even know her name and my heart fluttered hard that he didn't allow a preppy jerk to take advantage of her after spiking her drink. And when they come face to face not only in their new respective digs, but as doctor and patient, my own eyes bugged out a bit that they would be in each other's space daily.
Bromberg does a great job in allowing both Lucas and Emery to have their individual fears and freakouts that could make or break their careers. Also showing them that they can lean on someone else and find in the other not only the perfect sounding board but someone who will take good care of their fearful hearts. I loved that Emery and Lucas wanted to keep things casual since they both knew they shouldn't cross that line, but holy moly, their chemistry is wicked and wonderful and should be celebrated (and often) both in and out of the sheets.
I like that Bromberg appreciates and respects her characters, giving them just enough doubt when things might go south, yet also giving them real emotions in trying their hardest to make things right. There is little angst in regards to this patient/doctor relationship, but when something Emery might have to keep secret in order to allow Lucas to have one more season threatens both of their roles within the Rebels organization, I'm really pleased at how it was hashed out and resolved between these two.
Another winner for this talented author, The Backup Plan is yet another reminder as to why I adore her work. I'm lucky that I get to devour a well-written, thoughtful and researched book, grateful that I'm able to lose myself in the world of football, enjoying all the details and passion each player and member of the coaching staff exhibits, adding that much more life into this story. With the kind of romance we get between Emery and Lucas the true driving force of this book, it was a joy to read from start to finish.
I can't wait for the next installment of these Lone Star Rebels, a team that is destined for greatness under the wise tutelage of K. Bromberg. I simply loved every moment and happily give The Backup Plan a huge 5 stars!!
This is the first book in The Lone Star Rebels series from K Bromberg and it is an Amazing start to what I have no doubt will be a wonderful series. Lucas and Emery are the first couple to fall in Love. This story was both joyful and heartbreaking in parts and I did cry because I just couldn't stop it..K Bromberg always brings the emotion. Lucas Hale is a pro Football player he is 34 and should be thinking about retiring after a shoulder injury..But Football is his life and he wants to prove everyone wrong who have written him off. Emery Porter is an Injury Specialist and has just been hired by The Lone Stars team to help their players through injuries...Lucas will be her number one patient. The night before Emery starts her new job and Lucas begins his career as a Lone Star Player, they accidentally meet in a bar. Lucas saves her from a dangerous situation and takes care of her afterwards..Then the next day they discover they will be working together...She has to help him become fit again and he has to try to prove to Emery he is fit and able to play again. His chance to be picked for the team is on the line. But not only are they working together they also discover they are neighbours too..Seems like fate is trying to tell them something. I ADORE Lucas he is such a good man he will make you swoon,I love the way he treats Emery and supports her,he listens to her and her opinion matters to him.Which is important to Emery as her Ex Husband treated her badly and didn't support her dreams...Lucas makes her feel safe. This is a bit of a slow burn and alot of yearning at first..They are attracted to one another and begin a flirty friendship..But Emery is unwilling to take the risk of having a relationship with him and so Lucas has to try and convince Emery he is worth the risk, I felt so bad for Emery her job might come between them and it was so heart wrenching that she had to choose between supporting Lucas and lying to the Rebels. I also liked that as a couple even when things got bad they worked through the issue instead of breaking up and avoiding the problem. They have a great relationship even though it was a forbidden one, they made it work without being discovered. The Narrators were so perfect playing the roles of Emery and Lucas take a bow Kit Swann and Lance Greenfield you were superb. They completely captivated me in every moment between Lucas and Emery because their voices showed all the emotions in the ideal way..I found myself laughing when Kit would laugh as Emery I absolutely loved listening to both of these talented voice actors. This book is a wonderful romance with the right amount of spice thrown in there to heat things up..and whoa it gets hot. K Brombergs writing is as fabulous as always and the ending was just perfect for Emery and Lucas and it brought a tear to my eye. I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook and I am looking forward to more from this series. 5 Amazing Stars.- Cat W.

5 Amazing Stars.

The Backup Plan Lone Star Rebels Series, Book 1 By: K. Bromberg Narrated by: Kit Swann, Lance Greenfield
K. Bromberg welcomes you to the “Lone Star Rebels” with her first book in her new and fabulous football sports romance series, and it is off to an amazing start, with “The Backup Plan”, Lucas Hale and Dr. Emery Porter’s story. The story swept me in right from the start, grabbing hold of my attention and holding it captive the entire time. Emery left her life behind after getting out of a toxic relationship and took the job with the Rebels as an injury specialist for the players. Her first night in town, encouraged by her friend back home, she pushed herself to go outside her comfort zone and went out for a cocktail by herself. Except her night did not go as planned, but thankfully she had someone in her corner, and it did not turn out as bad as it could have. And that person turned out to be her next client at work, and also new to the Rebels team, Lucas Hale, a quarterback with years under his belt recovering from a shoulder injury. Some may say Lucas is a has been, others may say he has some good years ahead, but Lucas does not want to give it all up just yet: the lights, the ball, or the game. It is still pre-season, and Lucas is not sure if he will make the team roster, but that is his intention, though there are obstacles, which include the new team doctor. This masterfully crafted, multi-layered story has just the right amount of complicated, and a perfect balance of drama, angst, profound emotions, and steamy romance. I adored the two lead characters, and it was great learning their backstories, watching them get to know each other, and then seeing their relationship morph into something so much more. Also loved learning more about the team, the franchise, and I am looking forward to the next in the series, Cole Valor’s story. As always, the writing, plot, plot and world-building are fantastic, as are the complexity of the characters, their growth and development. K. Bromberg, thank you for another fantastic story and emotional rollercoaster ride.
🎧📚🎧 Kit Swann and Lance Greenfield were fantastic at voicing the characters, humanizing them with their personalities and emotions. Both nailed it as the two leads and perfected the roles of Emery and Lucas, were naturals in their roles, sounding believable and just as I imagined the characters to sound. They were just as fabulous performing the roles of the side/secondary characters too. It is a pleasure listening to their two versatile voice artists, who are entertaining storytellers, perform, and their captivating performances keep you glued to the story.
LOVED THIS 5-STAR READ! This was a dual-POV, slow burn🔥(my fave), friends-to-lovers, sports romance 🏈.... It's been a MINUTE since I've had a book I couldn't put down, and this one really stood out to me! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
THE PLOT: Emorie Porter is a doctor who also studied physical therapy, and has gotten her dream job working for a football team as the team doctor and rehabilitator of difficult cases. With this life change, she has moved to Austin, TX. After a difficult first night in town and a chance encounter with a kind stranger, she is ready to get to work. Scarred from a past divorce, she is determined to focus on work and make the most of it.
...enter Lucas Hale, backup quarterback for the Rebels football team, and mentor to the new rookie and starting quarterback, Cole. Lucas has had a shoulder injury and though considered a veteran at 34 y/o in Football, he's vying to keep his career going as he can't begin to imagine life without playing Football. The person in charge of making the call on whether he's fit to play with where he's at in his rehab is none other than the lovely Emorie Porter.
While they work closely together, sparks fly, trust is built, a connection is fostered. Will they both take the risks it requires to cross the line from colleagues to lovers?
MY TAKE: Full disclosure, I'm an occupational therapist so I REALLY connected with the rehab piece of this, and I personally loved that it appeared the author did her research and referred to specific tools and muscle groups she would encounter in practice. I also loved Lucas' POV on when his injury just felt "wrong" and the torment between what he wants to do and his own body's limitations - so true with any person experiencing a chronic injury or condition of any kind.
Slow burn is totally my thing, and this really simmered and had me rooting for them to take the leap...and the dual narration by Kit Swann and Lance Greenfield was absolutely exquisite - so much so that if I were to re-read this I may just have to listen again! 🎧 Also, I TOTALLY want to visit Austin, TX now. Off to plan my next family vacay....BYE!! 👋
BOOK CLUB Qs: 1) If you had to choose for your life, would you prefer a slow burn or an instalove/instalust type of romance? Why?
2) Did Emorie and Lucas do anything "wrong" by crossing the doctor/patient boundary into more than that? Why or why not?
3) Have you ever seen a physical medicine & rehab doctor, a physical therapist or an occupational therapist? If so, how did your experience compare to those outlined in the book?
4) What do you think consists of "going out on top" in reference to a sports career? What might this look like? How would one make the call?
5) Have you been to Austin, TX? What stood out to you about the setting in this book?
6) How do you feel about running? Is it a love, a hate, or a love/hate relationship? Why?
Thank you to Valentine PR and JKB Publishing for the ALC in exchange for my honest review!
The first book in the Lone Star Rebels series is centred around quarterback Lucas Hale, who relocates to Texas after signing with the Rebels. His first night there is eventful when he steps in to help a woman whose drink has obviously been spiked. After making sure she was safe, they part ways without exchanging names, making their unexpected reunion the next day when she turns out to be his new team’s doctor all the more impactful. Dr Emery Porter is starting over with a new job and in a new city after a difficult divorce from a husband who couldn’t accept her career ambitions. Newly engaged by the Rebels as their new injury specialist, she’s surprised to see her first patient is the man who rescued her the night before from a probable assault - Lucas.
The Backup Play is a compelling slow-burn romance with a strong workplace dynamic that adds a hint of the forbidden to any affair and plenty of emotional weight to add depth. Both Lucas and Emery are more mature characters in their thirties, which makes their relationship feel more believable and the progression natural rather than forced, even as significant challenges stand in their way. Emery was still navigating the fallout of her divorce, which her husband had blamed on her dedication to her profession, and now that same commitment puts her at odds with Lucas who is recovering from major shoulder surgery but is determined to return to the field and prove he can still compete at the highest level, no matter the cost. As his doctor, she has the power to decide whether he plays or not in her hands. She sees the pain he endures and knows better than anyone the likelihood of causing permanent damage continuing to play will cause. Lucas, however, insists that decision should his alone. Having devoted his life to football, he can’t imagine a future without it and struggles to recognise his value beyond the game. This leaves Emery in an impossible position, does she protect his future mobility and potentially lose him, or stay silent and risk both his wellbeing and her own career. It’s a difficult situation for her, where whatever she choice she makes will comes with a cost. This emotional tension is handled well, especially as both characters grapple with the difficult choices that have no easy resolution for either of them especially as Lucas struggles to see his worth or a life beyond the sport, he’s always defined himself by. It creates a poignant, high-stakes dilemma that keeps the story engaging throughout.
The Backup Plan was a well written and deliciously spicy, slow burn romance that I really enjoyed ❤️ The plot was engaging, emotional, and had a nice balance between football, injury recovery, and romance! As someone who played competitive sports for over 10 years, I loved how realistic everything felt, particularly with the sports medicine and rehab side of things, it added so much depth to the story. The writing style pulled me in easily, and I loved the emotional layers throughout Lucas and Emery’s journey 🤍 Their relationship built naturally, and the slow burn and spice mixed with the workplace tension and neighbors element just worked so well!
Emery is such a smart, hardworking, admirable woman, and I loved seeing her step into this new chapter of her life ❤️ After leaving behind a relationship that didn’t truly value her at all, it was really satisfying watching her pursue her dream career and prove herself in the workplace. She’s compassionate, determined, and genuinely cares so deeply, especially when it comes to helping Lucas—even when things become emotionally complicated 🥺 I adored how much she really saw him, noticing the things he wouldn’t say out loud, and how their connection slowly grew through trust, friendship, and understanding. Their chemistry felt soft and meaningful, and I really loved seeing her become someone Lucas could lean on 😌
Lucas was definitely one of my favorite parts of this book 🥹 He’s grumpy, protective, dependable, and carrying so much emotional weight underneath the surface 🤍 Watching him struggle with the possibility of losing football, the thing that’s shaped his whole life, was honestly heartbreaking at times. But despite his stubborn moments, there’s such a caring and gentle side to him, especially with Emery! I appreciated how supportive he was of her career and success, and how he genuinely respected her while still clearly falling harder and harder for her. He and Emery balanced each other so well, and I loved the quiet intimacy between them just as much as the bigger emotional moments ❤️
This was a great sports romance read, that had an emotional, spicy, and layered story. I thought the workplace and neighbor dynamic made things interesting and heated, and it was well written! The chemistry between Emery and Lucas felt genuine, sweet, and full of moments that built up to something bigger, and I did not want to let them go by the epilogue 🤍
Sometimes love isn’t part of the plan—it’s what shows up when everything else feels uncertain. This story pulled me in quickly, but what really stayed with me was Emery. She’s newly single, stepping into a new job and a new city, and determined to prove—to herself more than anyone—that she can actually live outside of work. That independence leads her to take a simple but meaningful step: going out alone. The fact that her first night nearly turns dangerous was honestly hard to read, but it also set the tone for how quickly life can shift—and how important it is to have someone show up when it matters. Lucas stepping in during that moment immediately gave their connection weight beyond a typical meet-cute.
Lucas, on the other hand, is at a completely different crossroads. He’s built his entire identity around football, and now he’s clinging to what might be his last chance after a serious injury. What I appreciated most is that his struggle isn’t just physical—it’s deeply emotional. You can feel how much the game means to him, and how terrifying it is to even consider letting it go.
The real strength of the book is in that push and pull between them. Emery knows exactly what continuing to play could cost Lucas, and that tension never fades into the background. It adds so much depth to their relationship because their feelings aren’t simple or convenient—they come with real consequences. Watching Emery balance her professional responsibility with her growing emotions felt authentic and, at times, genuinely heartbreaking.
The romance itself is slow-building and grounded in trust, which made it all the more believable. It’s not just about attraction—it’s about two people meeting at vulnerable points in their lives and trying to figure out what comes next.
I listened to this as an ALC, and I have to say—the narration truly elevated the entire experience. It added an extra layer of emotion and depth to both Emery and Lucas’s journeys, making their struggles and connection feel even more real and immersive.
Overall, this was an emotional, engaging story that leans more into the characters and their internal battles than just the sports backdrop. It’s about identity, risk, and the unexpected ways love can complicate—and sometimes clarify—everything.
I received an advanced audio copy from VPR Audio for my honest opinion.
There isn't a story by K. Bromberg that I don't love, all her books are so unique and so well written and I just keep coming for more!
Emery is trying to have a fresh start in a new town with a new job after her divorce to a man that didn't appreciate her success an Injury and Rehabilitation physician. On her first night in town she almost falls into the hands of a bad man but luckily she is save by a man that care for her. To her surprise in her first day at work she runs into the same man that save her and finds out he is Lucas Hale the new pro QB for the Long Star Rebels.
Lucas is trying to come back to his beloved game of football after a terrible shoulder injury that almost finish his career. He knows the team has only brought him as a mentor but his is determine to show the coaches and the team that he still has some play in him. To his surprise the new doctor in charge with his recovery is not other that the beautiful woman he help the night before who also happens to be his new neighbor.
I just loved how Lucas and Emery’s relationship began as a beautiful friendship that transformed into something more. At the begging , they fought their attraction, especially given the forbidden nature of their relationship working together as patient and doctor but with the more time they spend together the harder becomes to stay apart from each other.
Emery was so smart and I loved her determination to succeed in her field and also I adored how Lucas always make her feel special and celebrated her success something her ex never gave her. When the truth diagnosis of Luca’s shoulder comes to light she is conflicted between the love he has for him, her duty as a doctor to report to the team and the future he desperately wants.
Lucas was determined to continue playing the sport he loved, which brought him comfort despite the high risk of injury. He doesn’t know what there is besides football and it was heartbreaking to witness his struggle, but I just loved that Emery was there to support him, easing both his physical and mental pain, she was there in his hardest moments and she ultimately becomes everything he ever needed.
I just really enjoyed this book and I can’t wait for what’s to come for this series .
Thank you to the author and Valentine PR for the Arc.
I have only listened to a couple of novellas by K. Bromberg and enjoyed the light, cutesy tales. This book is different. Though it may have light, cutesy moments interwoven into the story, it has way more substance.
Sports medicine specialist Emery Porter accepts a life-changing opportunity to join the medical team for the NFL’s Lone Rebels in Austin. Still healing from a painful divorce, she is determined to leave her unfulfilled past behind. Her path crosses with Lucas Hale, a veteran quarterback refusing to admit his fourteen-year career is jeopardised by a lingering shoulder injury. Their lives intertwine when Lucas saves Emery from harm the night before her first day on the job.
We soon discover that Emery is Lucas’s doctor and neighbour. Although they are forbidden from becoming personally attached, their forced proximity only ignites the slow burn.
I didn’t expect these two to suffer from any anxiety, but they do. For Emery, it stems from her past and the night Lucas helped her, while for Lucas, it’s the unknown. I appreciate that the author includes these feelings because they do happen in the real world.
Lucas so draws me in. He has a good heart, and the way he treats Emery is chivalrous, and I admire that about him.
Lucas doesn’t want to be a hero, but the fact is, he is one. He is a hero not only for Emery but also for his teammates, past and present, as well as the fans fascinated by him and the sport.
Both Lucas and Emery are talented in their fields. Lucas has a deep understanding of the game he loves, earning him great respect from teammates and staff. Similarly, Emery is dedicated to her work, focusing on extending athletes' careers.
They clearly love each other, but the forces at play jeopardise far more than their survival as a couple.
Audiobook narrators Kit Swann and Lance Greenfield gave strong performances, capturing the emotions of the characters. They complemented one another, emphasising the story's aesthetic.
I absolutely loved Lucas, Emery and the side characters. I am already counting down the days until book two is released.
I enjoyed K. Bromberg’s writing, and I have a craving to read/listen to more of her books.
4.25stars-THE BACKUP PLAN is the first instalment in K. Bromberg’s contemporary adult LONE STAR REBELS erotic, football romance series. This is thirty-four year old quarterback Lucas Hale, and thirty five year old sports medicine doctor Emery Porter’s story line.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Lucas and Emery) THE BACKUP PLAN follows in the aftermath of both Lucas and Emery’s arrival in Austin, Texas. Lucas Hale is an aging quarterback who has been given a second chance with the Lone Star Rebels. Emery Porter is a sport medicine doctor who will be working with the Rebel’s medical team but a night on the town for Emery ended with Lucas coming to her rescue, and our couple will soon discover they have more in common than new to town. Lucas is desperate to prove he still has more to give but Emery isn’t so sure that Lucas has a future in football, and the fall-out may pull our couple apart.
The world building focuses on the health of the athlete, and emotional, physical and mental fall-out as injuries and age give way to a sense of loss and defeat. Emery struggles to break the heart of a man who’s only goal is one more year; Lucas is determined to play regardless of injury, pain or the threat of losing it all.
The relationship between Emery and Lucas is one of mutual attraction but a forbidden arrangement in the wake of working for the same team. Keeping their relationship on the down low, Emery and Lucas find themselves at a crossroads when Lucas’ health is threatened, and Emery struggles between honesty and love. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
The secondary and supporting characters are animated and real. We are introduced to Lucas’ brother Brendan ; Coach Brooks; rookie quarterback Coie Valor, as well as several members of the Lone Star Rebels.
THE BACKUP PLAN is a story of secrets and lies, resilience and acceptance, honesty and determination, relationships and love. The character driven premise is emotional, dramatic, inviting and edgy; the romance is tender and spicy; the characters are desperate, single-minded and tenacious.
The Backup Plan by K. Bromberg is a sports romance about an aging quarterback coming back from injury—unwilling to give up, even though his body is begging him to stop. Lucas is trying to figure out who he is (and who he’ll be) after football. He’s a leader on and off the field: protective, steady, and the kind of man who does the right thing simply because it’s the right thing. Everyone around him can see he’s so much more than the game—he just has to learn it himself. Emery is the sports medicine doctor hired by the team to prevent and rehab players’ injuries. She’s strong and independent, working hard to prove herself in a male-dominated field, and she overthinks everything after an ex who felt threatened by her success and tried to make her feel small because of it. I was here for their character development, the slow-burn romance, and the open, honest communication between them. Even with fear of the future (and their jobs) hanging over them, they keep showing up for each other—working on their relationship and finding ways to push through. They’re so good together, starting as friends and moving seamlessly into deep love and trust. They both have to learn that life may not go the way we plan, but that doesn’t mean it can’t still be beautiful. Like they say, “when one door closes, another one opens.” You can feel the heartbreak of him realizing his career is over, and her struggle to balance wanting him to have his dreams with the reality of his injury. I also loved all the subplots: life after divorce, protective men, young/immature/reckless athletes, a female doctor working twice as hard to earn respect in a male-dominated field, and the mental side of a physical game. If you like slow burn, golden retriever MMC energy, NFL romance, a doctor/patient (workplace) dynamic, and actual adult communication, you’ll love this book. The dual narration with Kit Swann and Lance Greenfield was great—they really brought the characters to life, especially Emery and Lucas. You could feel the tension, emotion, heartache, and deep connection, and the laugh-out-loud banter landed perfectly.
K. Bromberg's new series, Lone Star Rebels, started with a book I found difficult to put down. THE BACKUP PLAN was such a great read, a slow burn, doctor/patient, neighbours, close proximity, workplace romance which was both sweet and spicy.
Lucas Hale and Emery Porter are embarking on new careers with the Austin Rebels football team. The night before their first day they meet under unfortunate circumstances not knowing the role they will soon play in each other's lives. Lucas is a quarterback hoping to resume his career after a shoulder injury. Emery is a doctor who specialises in sport injuries and rehabilitation. When their paths cross at the Rebels' facility they both realise that their initial meeting needs to be forgotten, but is it going to be as easy as they think?
I adored Lucas and Emery, they were extremely relatable, their chemistry sizzled, the banter was sublime, and the heat was red hot. Lucas won my heart, he just wanted to leave football on his terms, his heart was huge, and the way he was with Emery showed how much he cared. Emery was simply beautiful, strong, loyal, and also vulnerable. Even though she fought her own conscience in regards to Lucas, she was always professional when needed. I enjoyed watching their connection deepen and the slow build of their relationship, nothing was forced. Even when troubled times hit they were there for each other.
THE BACKUP PLAN was a story of healing, internal battles, self discovery, and finding love when you least expect it. Kristy's characters always have multiple layers and Lucas and Emery certainly did, and I loved watching those layers being peeled back. The secondary characters always add to Kristy's stories, I loved Lucas' brother Brendan, Emery's bestie Trish and even Cole Valor the #1 quarterback for the team. I'm really looking forward to Cole's story which is up next.
This was another fabulous story from Kristy, she just has a way with her words, developing her characters and delivering stories I never want to end.
