A Bold and Unusual Blend of Myth, Faith, and High Stakes Adventure

I picked up First Virtue because the mix of Aztec mythology, space, and spiritual themes felt completely different from anything I had read before.
The story throws you into a high stakes situation right away and keeps that intensity throughout.
I liked how it combines mythology, faith, and unexpected elements like legendary figures in a way that feels ambitious and creative.
The main character’s determination and sense of purpose give the story a strong emotional core.
At times the ideas feel packed in very tightly, which can make it a bit overwhelming, but it also shows how much depth the author is aiming for.
A unique and imaginative read for anyone looking for something bold and different.

What I Did Like:
+Interesting concept. The fate of species are decided by epic football (soccer) games? Intriguing.
+The author has a good use of descriptive language. You’ll never wonder what something or someone looks like, it’s all described in detail for you. It makes picturing the scenes easier.
+The names and integration of Aztec mythology is cool. There’s a lot here that’s correct and a lot of liberties taken make sense. Plus Aztec mythology is underrepresented so it’s nice to see that.

Who Should Read This One:
-Soccer fans who also want an epic Scifi with dangerous stakes would be the audience for this one.

A Bold Space Fantasy with Mixed Execution

This first volume of a space fantasy trilogy offers an exciting mix of strong Christian themes, dynamic action scenes, and heartfelt character growth. The relationship between the main character and the love interest truly stands out as a highlight.

However, I found it challenging to connect with the competing theology from the other faith woven into the story—it didn’t quite resonate with me. The first-person narrative also made it a bit tricky to stay fully engaged; it felt somewhat limiting and turned the reading experience into a bit of a slog at times.

There’s potential here, but overall it didn’t fully pull me in.

I picked up First Virtue intrigued by the prospect of a sci-fi fantasy story with Aztec mythology undertones. It was an okay read, but it reminded me of Space Jam and not in a good way. I often was asking myself "Why?" Why does every alien group play futbol(Soccer) when it is run by Aztec deities, should they not be playing Ollamaliztli? Why would the solution to one of the puzzles be the constellation Leo, which is only visible from earth? Why isn't the Catholic religion stuff throughout the story, if felt like it came out of nowhere near the end?

First Virtue

I really enjoyed First Virtue. It was an interesting mix of sci fi, mythology, and fantasy. I liked that it brought in Aztec mythology, as you rarely see that in any books. Seems like a good start to a series.
