This psychic undertaker knows there’s only one cure for a bad case of murder. Fourth in the cozy paranormal mystery series following A Ghostly Demise.I told you I was sick, reads the headstone above Mamie Sue Preston’s grave. She was the richest woman in Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky, and also the biggest hypochondriac. Ironic, considering someone killed her—and covered it up perfectly. And how does Emma Lee, proprietor of the Eternal Slumber Funeral Home, know all this? Because Mamie Sue’s ghost told her, that’s how. And she’s offering big bucks to find the perp. The catch is, Mamie Sue was buried by the Raines family’s archrival, Burns Funeral Home. Would the Burnses stoop to framing Emma Lee’s granny? With an enterprising maid, a penny-pinching pastor, and a slimy Lexington lawyer all making a killing off Mamie Sue’s estate, Emma Lee needs a teammate—like her dreamboat boyfriend, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross. Because with millions at stake, snooping around is definitely bad for Emma Lee’s health.

A Ghostly Murder by Tonya Kappes Book 4 in the Ghostly Southern Mystery series. Paranormal cozy mystery. Best read as part of the series. Emma Lee see ghosts. In this book the ghost is looking for her teeth that weren’t buried with her. She gets Emma Lee’s attention by ringing a bell that’s part of her grave site.
Ok first, that bell tradition has always been creepy to me. So my attention was caught. Then the humor of “told you I was sick” on the tombstone and finding out the deceased wrote those words as part of her pre-pay package had me laughing. Lastly, the ghost promises to pay Emma Lee when everything is wrapped up. Where is a ghost going to get money? That roll of hundreds in her hand bag sure isn’t real. Lots of twists in this book which was more interesting because Emma Lee did not previously know this ghosts. But word is spreading among the ghosts the future looks busy for Emma Lee. And I won’t spoil the mystery but the ghost was able to pay Emma Lee. So a successful caper.
I had a great time with the first three volumes of the series. Indeed, I must say that each novels is full of lightness, humor and of course a great mystery. It is with pleasure that we find again Emma Lee here for a new investigation.
As I said a new case was set in motion in this story and it is the turn to Sue and Junior to go to ask our heroine for help. Each is determined to push Emma Lee to understand what has happened to them. Are the murders connected? Is there a serial killer in town? I admit that I was very quickly swept away by this investigation and I was very curious to understand the purpose and the truth behind the murders. One thing is for sure, I did not expect at all such a revelation at the end of the novel. There are a lot of tracks that we follow with curiosity and even if we agree fast enough with Emma Lee, we doubt that everything will be much more complicated than that. I must say that Mamie Sue was a very special character and she is hiding many secrets. But being very rich, this investigation will attract many dangers, much more than expected.
But even if there were only that but our heroine must also manage a large number of problems, including the fact that her sister Charlotte has decided to leave the family business or even to learn that Jack Henry has possibly found a job far from their city. It was touching to see the more sensitive side of our heroine, this is a touching side to observe as she does not necessarily reveals it often.
Something else ? It seems that someone is trying to plot against the Emma Lee’s grandmother, placing in her home some pretty different things stolen. But what may be the cause?
In all cases you understand that I had a good time with this story. It is as always a good read and it’s always interesting to see our heroine evolve with her gift and realize that she needs others though sometimes they are not always there for her. A new good novel.
The dust is barely settled on her last ghostly murder case when Emma Lee is approached by Mamie Sue Preston once the richest woman in Sleepy Hollow. And, if she's appearing to Em? She's been murdered. Off we go on a new ghost mystery full of Southern charm and sass as narrated by the sensational Tiffany Morgan.
Review: A Ghostly Murder is the fourth of the Ghostly Southern Mysteries that could be read/listened to out of order in a pinch, but have some ongoing series threads that make it best enjoyed in order.
Emma Lee has a ticklish issue with Mamie Sue's need for her ghost detecting because for one, Mamie Sue died a while ago and didn't seem to have any surviving relations or friends. For another, she was buried by Burns Funeral Home- her family funeral home's arch enemy. This means some bending and breaking of laws is necessary so she can't bring Sheriff and boyfriend, Jack Henry in on this one.
Her clandestine murder investigation is joined by a mounting trouble with her sister, Charlotte Rae, over the running of their funeral home because everyone is leaving them to go to burns because of Emma Lee's ghost escapades that make her seem crazy, someone stealing and hiding incriminating evidence to frame Granny, troubles with Jack Henry's mom not liking whom he's dating and then the big one, worry over a secret Jack Henry is keeping and whether their relationship will survive it.
A Ghostly Murder had a lot going on including Emma Lee and her ghostly entourage's zany, bumbling sleuthing antics paired with her granny's brand of crazy. Each of these is over the top and really shouldn't be taken seriously. No investigation would work this way and no detective, amateur or otherwise, would get away with what she does let alone survive it. But, each time, the frolicking way it goes on and the times it has me giggling make me suspend belief and just go with it.
I admit that this one pushed it further than the previous books had. I think it is because I really don't like the way she is around Jack Henry. She pushes and pulls him about emotionally, keeps important finds and secrets on the murder cases from him though she expects full disclosure in return and for him to look the other way when she or her granny break the law. No, she's not a bad person and has a generous heart, but her heedlessness does wear thin now and then with me. And, that includes cutting her cranky sister some slack because Emma Lee is the reason they are losing clients and making unilateral decisions with salaries and sponsorships putting them in financial trouble and Charlotte Rae is not in on the secret of Emma Lee's abilities as a 'Betweener' who sees, hears, and must aide murdered ghosts to crossover.
Things have been boiling between Emma Lee and Charlotte Rae through each book and it finally boiled over in this book. Just like Emma Lee seemed to need to see evidence of just how much Jack Henry loved her and that crisis point hit as well. Meanwhile, between Mamie Sue and Junior, yep a second ghost, things were never dull.
The mystery was a bundle of mysteries that needed working out and it got pretty exciting and emotional when all the truth came out. There was a nice bittersweet moment at the end as a result that gave some extra depth to the story.
Tiffany Morgan continues to be a superb narrator and nailed this huge cast of colorful characters from all ages and genders perfectly.
All in all, A Ghostly Murder hit lots of emotions, went a little wild now and then, and delivered a fab cozy mystery in the end. Its a fun and light series that I can strongly recommend to paranormal cozy mystery fans.
My thanks to Tantor Audio for the opportunity to listen to this book in exchange for an honest review.
I've enjoyed every installment in this series that I've read and the only exception for this one is that I enjoyed it SO much more! I loved how Emma and her beau (None other than the head Sheriff) romance blossomed and progressed. I love how the "silly" meter dialed down just a touch, giving this one a bit more of a serious tone...this did NOT take away from the fun. And I loved how the entire book had me guessing who the murderer could have possibly been. And I was still wrong! Tonya Kappes has a way of creating this fun, hard-to-guess-mysteries that I'm loving so darn much.
And Emma? Boy has her character grown. I love how even though the town thinks she has a case of the crazies she doesn't let that stop her from helping the restless dead. Nor does she even let her near-death experiences hinder her ability to be brave and helpful to everyone, living or dead. I just all around really find her brave and compassionate with a dash of humor.
I don't own the other books yet but I've got them on hold at the library for immediate reading. I can't get enough of this series! It's so different from what I usually read, but it's so freaking addictive and fun!
Ding, ding, ding goes the bell and Emma Lee has not even got the last ghost fully buried again when the new one pops up! What is going on in this sleepy little town to have ghosts coming at her right and left. Could there be a serial killer on the loose? Laugh along with Emma's antics as she tries to uncover the mystery without letting anyone in on the secret that she can see ghosts! The town already thinks she is crazy, but seeing ghosts would have them locking her up and tossing away the keys! The audio books of this series are seriously entertaining!
Another enjoyable cozy mystery by Tonya Kappes. Well-written, well-paced, and entertaining. I'm hoping my library obtains the other books from this series. Very well worth the time to read.
I really enjoyed this book. When Emma Lee is joined by Mamie Sue who wants her to find out who murdered her, Emma Lee has a bit of a problem, Mamie was buried by a rival funeral home so it's a little difficult to check into. When joined by another ghost Emma Lee has her hands full. I love Emma Lee, she seems to be the only sane character in town and they all think she's crazy because she sees dead people. She is a strong character and sure of herself, she also knows her flaws. One thing that bothers me is how people can't wait to say she's crazy and have her locked up, including her grandmother and doctor. Other than that the mystery was great, I loved Mamie Sue, Emma Lee finally gets haunted by a likable character, she had me laughing a few times. I did figure it out before Emma Lee, however, there was a twist that I didn't see coming, actually a couple of them. I will continue on with this series.
Things are heating up in Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky. Is there a serial killer on the loose? Is someone out to get Granny? With the election over you wouldn't think so. But strange things are happening and it is looking like Granny is involved. And what is going on with Emma Lee and Jack Henry? Will their romance survive? Tonya Kappes has written another winner in the Ghostly Southern Mystery series. This series is so entertaining to read you don't notice the time flying by! You don't have to read them in order but it is more fun if you do. They are fast reads and, if you haven't read any of them, I recommend a weekend of binge reading.
This book kept me guessing, thoroughly enjoying the ride every page. The difference between a 4- and 5-star review this time has to do with an abundance of anger between Emma and Charlotte and perhaps too many sad sections, like the retirement home. Life is sad at times for most of us; I need laughter to forget whenever I can. But my favorite part was Junior’s toupee. On to next in series!
Oh Emma Lee! I feel for this girl even though Mamie Sue seems to be one of her calmer clients. Things in Emma Lee’s personal life are a major factor in this story as Emma Lee tries to solve Mamie Sue’s murder…. Oh and get her her teeth! I love these characters and am ready for more!!!
These books have the perfect mix of mystery to unravel and laugh out loud scenes that keep me coming back for more. I love watching Emma Lee play detective. I also love the kookie residents in her little town. The action is usually non stop and there is a bit of a romance that keeps me hooked. I very much enjoy the audio of this book.
Dueling funeral homes, ghosts who need help finishing business so they can cross over, sibling discontent, a mother who will never approve of any woman who dares date her son, pranks and tricks and no one without secrets.
Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky is the epitome of southern charm and tradition. The town square reminds me of that in Stars Hollow, home to tv's Gilmore Girls, or Bluebell, Alabama, where Dr. Zoe Hart finds her world upside down.
Emma Lee Raines and her sister, Charlotte Rae Raines, inherited the family business, the Eternal Slumber Funeral Home. Their parents had retired to Florida but grandmother Zula Rae Raines Payne, although retired from the family business and busy with another full time enterprise, continues to stick her nose into the girls' lives and business. "Southern women always wanted to be seen as a lady, but really, we were all nosy." A feud with the other local funeral business, owned by the man who had defeated Granny Zula Rae for the mayor's job by just two votes is indeed motivation for the feisty elder to remain active.
The thing that makes Emma Lee different from her family is her ability to see and speak with the dead. Not all dead people, just those who have been murdered. This talent/gift/curse has created tension with some townsfolk who suspect she is a little bit crazy. Fortunately for Emma Lee, her hunky, sheriff, boyfriend, the one with the over protective mother, believes in her and her In-Betweener clients.
The ghost of a woman her Grandmother's age insists that Emma Lee help her. Her main concern is that she was buried without her false teeth. Knowing that she only sees murdered souls, Emma Lee realises that she must solve the case. Only, Mamie Sue Preston is not willing to give up her secrets to help, acting as if she is protecting someone. Being the "wealthiest woman in Sleepy Hollow," had to be behind her murder. How could Emma Lee dig up more clues? Will Emma Lee survive tracking down a killer?
Tonya Kappes puts the fun into each novel no matter how tense things may seem. I love her use of "Southernisms" and relational manipulations. When all the evidence points to one conclusion, be prepared to finally hear a few secrets. (Never all.)
I did receive an advance copy of this book to read and review. No promises were given about ratings. I can't wait to continue reading the rest of this series.
This fourth volume in a terrific series had me looking up the subsequent novel immediately. I was won over. Having enjoyed each volume separately, this book had even more elements to grab the reader than the past three, and that was a difficult writing job to do!
Our heroine, Emma Lee Raines, co-manager of 'Eternal Slumber Funeral Home' in Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky, doesn't even get one minutes break from her second job, that of being a form of medium that helps the dead cross over.
Current client, sitting ringing a bell, is one of Sleepy Hollow's wealthiest ever, to this day's, citizen, Mamie Sue Preston. Mamie was murdered and she lost her teeth...up to Emma Lee to solve.
When, another recently passed citizen, contacts Emma Lee, she begins to wonder if a serial killer might be in Sleepy Hollow? Up to now, the dead have not had an advocate, Emma Lee certainly fills that need, but...Sleepy Hollow? Yes, the live citizens think she has 'Funeral Trauma' since the good ole' Doc had misdiagnosed her, but, hunky Sheriff Jack Henry Ross, does know about her ability.
The plot thickens and the action kicks in and I held my breath for over 20% of the book. Amazingly fun, action packed, well crafted, and engaging characters kept me turning the pages. I loved this book. Give it a try but don't begin from Volume four, start at the beginning. You'll enjoy each read!

Emma Lee Raines is back with a new mystery to solve. Mamie Sue Preston insists that she was murdered, but the entire town thinks she did of natural causes. When a woman as wealthy and single as Mamie Sue dies, one has to wonder if something sinister was at work. Emma Lee must find out where Mamie Sue's money went and who would have wanted her dead.
As Emma Lee begins to investigate, she finds that Mamie Sue and her grandmother have old grudges against one another. Emma Lee doesn't believe her Granny was behind the murder, but she has to figure out her involvement in things.
I enjoy the hilarious and eccentric residents of Sleepy Hollow. They keep me coming back to this series, but I have to admit that this one was my least favorite of all the novels. I just feel like at this point I want something shocking or different to happen. The plots are beginning to feel slightly predictable at this point. I want a more compelling and less formulaic story.
One Last Gripe: Jack Henry's mother got on my nerves.
Tonya wows us yet again with the antics of Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky! I love this series more with each book she writes. Number four gives us the ghost of Mamie Sue Preston, hypochondriac, in need of Emma Lee's help to prove that she was murdered. Mamie Sue is not as willing to provide information as some other spirits have been, however, which makes things a bit trickier for Emma Lee.
It's not that there is a lack of suspects for the murder. Mamie Sue was a very wealthy woman, and any of the folks who benefitted upon her death might have wanted to hasten it along. And, as usual, Emma Lee will need to solve the case before she becomes a murder victim herself.
There is plenty of humor to be found in this story, along with plot twists that throw you for a loop just when you think you have the mystery all figured out. I'm already on pins and needles waiting for the next book in the series.
I received this book from PBC in exchange for an honest review. This is book 4 in the series and my first by this author. Even though I have not read any others at this point the book flowed well and I never felt confused or even lost. From the beginning I was pretty much hooked. I flew through this book and could have easily read this in a day if I would have been able to. The main character Emma Lee is an undertaker for sleepy hollow funeral home but also sees and talks to ghosts. Pretty much my favorite kind of books include ghosts, mediums aka people who can talk to ghosts and a good mystery. She is dating the towns hot sheriff Jack Henry Ross. The thug I liked most was that I thought I knew who was guilty only for the author to throw a fast one and it was someone totally different. Well played Tonya Kappes. Well played. This is definitely a fun series. And I will definitely be actively seeking more of her books. Definitely worth the four stars!
OMG what a good book I usually don't do those letters things in the beginning but I didn't know what else to say other than I loved this book and seeing Emma Lee out on her own standing up and taking over with Eternal Slumbers making more decisions and just generally really coming into her own with this book. As always Emma's got ghosts visiting her who have something in common it's up to Emma to figure out what the something is. This book had so much going on mystery, hidden secrets, really bad guys you name it!! Can't wait to see what Ms. Kappes comes up with next!!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This next book in the Ghostly Southern Mystery series is as good as the others. Tonya Kappes writes with a southern wit and humor and throws in some romance and ghosts along the way. It would be hard enough to deal with one betweener, but when there are two, it’s really hard. Betweeners are those who have died, but not crossed over because someone murdered them and it’s up to Emma to find out who it is. This series will have you wanting grits for breakfast and laughing at the betweeners antics. I love this series and can’t wait for the next one.
Another exciting murder mystery. I've also noticed that Tonya Kappes is slowly going for the serial killer theme, doubling up on the murders and such. Interesting developments on Emma Lee's personal life and character development. I'm eager to see what's next I this series, each book has always been a short and fun getaway.
Here’s an amateur mystery sleuth who believes in justice for all, even the ghostly. Emma Lee Raines has discovered that she is able to see and talk with ghosts. These spirits who are visiting her are “Betweeners” who are unable to “cross over” because they’ve got unfinished business. As mortals, they were murdered and their murderers have not been found and brought to justice, yet. But now Emma Lee has been persuaded to investigate.
In this novel, part of the Ghostly Southern Mysteries series, someone killed Mamie Sue Preston, the richest woman of Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky. She was a hypochondriac and when she died everyone thought she’d finally succumb from a real illness. Now it looks like it was murder, and Mamie herself is telling Emma Lee her own theories and suspects. But Emma Lee is turning up some interesting clues of her own. Others in the town have their own motives for trying to misdirect evidence and frame certain town residents. The twists are ingenious, and it all heats up when our amateur sleuth teams up with boyfriend Sheriff Jack Henry Ross, who is an exciting Southern gentleman, and can be less than enthusiastic about these other-worldly connections.
The settings for this series are the delightful small towns of the South, specifically in Kentucky. The beautiful scenery is vividly described and plays a role in the plotting. The cast of characters are such fun, leaving you feeling that y’all have enjoyed a charming vacation away.
Tonya Kappes is a best seller author with more than twenty books and four novellas. In her works she creates inviting communities and characters. Her other series are just as endearing: Killer Coffee, Divorced Diva, Laurel London, Magical Cures, Olivia Davis, Spies and Spells, and the Kenni Lowry series. This last series is set where the food is fried, the secrets are buried, and Kenni Lowry is Sheriff. And you don’t have to wait long for the next in the Kenni Lowry series – Ax to Grind the third in this series is out September 19th this year.
If you’d like to hear more from the author herself, in her own words and in her own Southern accent, please listen to Kendall & Cooper Talk Mysteries with Tonya Kappes on iTunes and on YouTube at this link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJcXU...
I had started another series by this author & wasn't overly thrilled with the writing, but thought that I might try another in the series:
Alas, the Library does not own anything in that series, but does own the Ghostly Southern Mystery series, which seemed to be more interesting.
B*I*N*G*O
I liked this book:
Emma Lee is the undertaker for the family funeral home business, but more than that she is a Betweener; she is able to see, hear, & communicate with the ghosts of those who have been murdered and help them cross over by finding out who murdered them and how.
Fortunately for Emma Lee, her boyfriend is the local police and he knows of her gift & helps bring the murderers to justice.
In this book, her Granny's rival, Mamie Sue Preston, appears to Emma Lee and demands help finding out who murdered her & how....
Mamie Sue was worth millions and left her estate to both the local church (which has not made use of 1 penny of the money) and her maid Dixie (who also makes herbal skin creams)....
When another well off man dies & then another society matron (both whose ghosts contact her) Emma Lee notices that they all had 2 things in common: Dixie's maid service & Dixie's skin cream.
My only problem with the books was keeping the women's names straight. I found that the rest of the book went smoothly; it was entertaining & easy to read.
By the end of the last book, I was about to give up on the series but wanted to see if it was just that story or were the others going to follow suit. I’m glad I gave book 4 a try.
I had a tough time with the beginning of the book. I was ready to deep six Zula Page for all the antics attributed to her. Zula Page aka Granny was as much of a presence in this book and I liked that.
Glad I stuck with it. Emma has to find out who is trying to frame Grannie and who killed Mamie Sue Preston. While searching for Mamie’s killer, another body (Junior) that was recently buried seeks Emma Lee out. Do they have the same killer or is the little town of Sleepy Hollow, KY being overrun with killers?
I like the twists, turns and the reveal caught me by surprise. I was happy to see we found out who was framing Granny and why. I’d like to know why B. Allen really dislikes Emma Lee. Emma Lee actually gets paid for aiding a ghost and there are changes at the funeral home.
This was actually a good addition to the series. The relationship between Emma and her Beau is progressing and hitting road bumps, but they’ve worked it out. In the meantime there’s multiple murders to solve, and Emma, as usual sticks her nose in it :). As an inbetweener, her ghostly clients need her to solve their murders so they can move on. On top of that, she continues to deal with her zany grandmother who insists on getting into trouble, her snotty sister, and the constant arguments/anger between the ; the town gossips who all think she’s “crazy” or has the “funeral trauma”;
I’m this case, several very wealthy elderly townsfolk are being killed, but why? Their deaths were treated as natural deaths so why does Emma suspect murder? Is there a serial killer running around town bumping of seniors for their money?
I think at book 4 we are way past the “poor funeral girl” troupe from H.S. so let it go already! It’s just dragging down the story and not showing any growth for Emma in that regards.
An enjoyable series, you pretty much know what you are going to get BUT with some real life thrown in for good measure.
Once again a ghost gets her attention by ringing a bell complaining her teeth are missing. She then explains to the ghost if you are here then you were murdered.
As she tries to unravel the mystery behind this death the ghost is really helpful. Tends to disappear when the questions get hard or she can't believe someone is a suspect. As this is going on a second ghost shows up which leads her in a new direction. While this sleuthing is going on, she is working on a relationship with the sheriff, but that has complications. and there is family drama with her sister.
It is a good fast read but as the pieces of the mystery puzzle come together I thought I had the answer until one little scandal from decades ago proves to be the real motive.
Emma Lee Raines gets another assignment as the richest woman in Sleepy Hollow makes an appearance beside her grave to get her help to cross over. During the investigation, Emma discovers that there may be a serial killer as another ghost makes an appearance, and one of the other residences falls gravely ill, while the town reporter is also physically attacked. Emma's extra curricular activities with the deceased ghost may finally be putting her funeral home out of business as many people are moving their contracts to a rival because of her activities.
Pro's: Tonya kappes wrote another fun story with well defined characters and lots of laughs along the way.
Con's: This was a very unsatisfactory ending as on several occations evidence of stolen items around town were planted in granny's inn to frame her. There was never a reveal as to who, or why she was being framed.
Emma Lee’s adventure centers around Maime Sue Preston. She was the wealthiest woman in their town. There are several suspects to her murder and Emma Lee will have to work quickly to solve this one since people keep dying. Emma Lee’s sister is done with Emma Lee’s funeral trauma and Granny’s craziness causing drama and the loss of clients – she takes a job with another funeral home. Emma Lee is determined to keep the business afloat and goes to the local funeral home to drum up business. More town secrets and history is uncovered in this story and I am looking forward to what Emma Lee learns in next book!
