“An entertaining thriller with a potent message about dehumanizing technology.” - KIRKUS REVIEWS (starred review)
In a future where secret messages are trafficked through encoded viruses carried by infected Couriers, a dying woman discovers that her DNA hides her father’s final truth—a secret powerful enough to destroy a rogue AI’s hold on humanity, if she can outrun her past and live long enough to deliver it.
Courier by Wes Dyson, felt like being the passenger of a high speed chase with no way of knowing where you might end up. I was instantly enthralled by the introduction of the protagonist and their futuristic setting. It felt like a completely different future than any other fictional universe, but also drew from the current zeitgeist of our AI and social media predicament and where that might lead. Wes has a real talent to set the stage for each scene and lead you through it in a way that makes you feel like a true passenger for each high stakes moment. There are some really clever concepts for future tech in this book with frightening implications since it feels pulled from real world science experiments. The book is written in first person, and Wes does have a great handle on the dialog and internal monologues. Other supporting characters and side characters are uniquely written with their own style of speech which lends to their believability. There are many avenues this book could take next, with a lot of different concepts of modified humans introduced. And that is maybe the only thing I can find fault with this story for, since this feels like the introduction of a larger world, I would like to delve deeper into what the larger world feels and knows about these modified humans. It’s a quick read, and for the most part the story feels like it comes to a satisfactory end. Though I was left wanting to explore more of this unique vision of a possible future. It does feel at the end as though we could have gotten more story, since it feels slightly compressed to get to the ending. We are presented with some new concepts towards the end that might feel a bit out of left field, though if the book was longer they could have been fleshed out more. It’s a shorter book than what I had anticipated, but I give it 5 stars for the writing, scene pacing, and character progression. The descriptive style of the settings and the character's inner dialog made me feel immersed in the world. The writing style also did a great job of giving the sensation of a quickened pace when the action ramps up, and also when moments were tense and drawn out. I would definitely recommend it to fans of cyberpunk and political thrillers, and anyone looking for something unique both in concept and settings. As a disclaimer I received an advance review copy for free, and I”m leaving this review voluntarily.
THIS BOOK IS INSANELY GOOD!! I loved the world building! It’s set in a dystopian world when AI and ASI have practically taken over. People are walking around with their faces in screens, being “self news reporters” or influencers and also alternating their appearances using technology. The FMC of this book is a courier who is on a mission to deliver a message but it set off course. When she was in her initial courier state she had lost all her memories but when she is back to being a human she slowly gains those memories back in flashes and we get to witness her unravel who she is and inevitably take down a corrupt government. If you love the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells or Road to Ruin by Hana Lee you are going to enjoy this book!
The world pulled me in right away. It feels futuristic but also a little too real, which made it even more interesting to read. I loved how everything felt layered without being hard to follow.
The main character’s journey is what kept me hooked. Watching things slowly click into place for her made it really hard to put down.
I also liked how fast it felt. Once it gets going, it really doesn’t slow down and I ended up flying through it.
An interesting story carefully blending science fiction with events in a dystopian world- Courier was a good read although a bit slow in parts within the plot.
The main character was well written along with his relationships to the other characters within the story.
