The Complete William Holmes Spy Thrillers Books 1-7: Seven gripping thrillers packed with intrigue
GET *THE COMPLETE SERIES* OF WILLIAM HOLMES SPY THRILLERS. ALL SEVEN BOOKS IN ONE UNPUTDOWNABLE BOX SET.
Praise for Conrad Voss
‘Neatly contrived adventure.’ Daily Express
‘One of the pleasantest new personalities in Crime Fiction.’ The Sunday Times
‘A spy thriller rare enough to deserve a small salute . . . very fast and zestful’ The Financial Times
William Holmes is a discreet civil servant at the heart of Whitehall. Things are usually quiet, orderly, and predictable . . . until someone tries to burn him alive in his own flat.
He survives by chance. But now he must find out who wants him dead — and why?
What begins as an attempted assassination quickly reveals something bigger. Soviet agents have disappeared across Europe. A new, silent weapon has surfaced. And someone believes Holmes is standing in the way of whatever comes next.
The truth is, he doesn’t know what he’s supposed to know.
Forced out from behind his desk and into the field, Holmes follows the trail from London to Paris, searching for the missing piece before his enemies strike again.
At his side is Morrison — steady, practical, and quietly capable — the counterbalance to Holmes’s instinct and intuition.
Because in this new game, hesitation is fatal.
And the attempt on Holmes’s life was only the opening move.
Perfect for fans of John le Carré, Ben Macintyre, John Gardner, Charles Cumming, and Mick Herron’s Slow Horses.

Since this is a seven-story compilation, I'm giving this opinion on that basis. I liked it. The characters, good and bad, are interesting.
Our protagonist, William Holmes, is a young man working for the UK Prime Minister as a security consultant. He's not really a secret agent, à la James Bond, as he works a lot more with his brain than his body. However, he does get into a couple of scrapes that use a little of what Bond has a lot of. His supporting characters are excellent and just that: support. There's the head of MI5, the UK's Secret Service, and the head of the Special Branch of the Metropolitan Police, dealing with internal security. There's even a young, brainy officer who gives them lots of tech support when needed. I like them all.
The seven stories are each unique, with no single story depending on the others. However, as is the case with any book series involving the same cast of characters, the interrelationships evolve, so there is a progression from story to story. It makes sense to me to read them in order, and I'm glad I did.
On the downside, I rate the editing as weak. There are lots of instances of wrong word choice or obvious typos that shouldn't be in the text. The separation of dialog between characters gets a little fuzzy at times, but if you stick with it, it'll make sense in the end. I'd have rated this collection FIVE STARS, rather than FOUR, if not for this flaw in putting the stories together.
I can recommend the William Holmes story collection with confidence that you'll enjoy it. Unfortunately, there won't be any more Holmes stories written, as Conrad Voss Bark died about twenty-five years ago. Bummer. I'm going to sort through his work, as he wrote more than the seven in this collection. I'm hopeful that I can find the other stories.

Great series of books
It's so refreshing to read a series of books written before the invention of the modern technology that we know today. Some brilliant story lines with crimes foiled by good old investigative work rather than relying on technology (apart from the introduction of RICE in book 7!) William Holmes is a brilliant character with a mixture of good, and bad, luck in his role as security assistant to the Prime Ministers office. Highly recommended series of books
