Knight Captain Luka has two an assassin trying to start a war… and Izabel. He already knows which one of them is going to break his heart.
Luka keeps castle security, and his life, under strict control. He gave up the right to happiness when his actions led to his best friend—Izabel’s brother—dying alone. He could never ask for forgiveness, especially not from Izabel, no matter how much he wanted her. So, he pushed her away instead. But now there’s a dead body on the side of their ancient holy mountain, Izabel has been drawn into hunting for the killer, and having her close enough to touch is driving his beast insane.
Izabel has a new home and a flourishing apothecary well away from the castle… and well away from the man whose cold rejection still haunts her. But something sinister is happening, and it feels all too similar to how her brother died. When the prince asks her to help investigate, Izzy can’t refuse. Not with war threatening everyone she loves—and the chance to finally learn the truth—on the line.
Forced to work together, Luka and Izzy find the pull between them burning hotter with every shared moment. With enemies already inside the gates, they must decide exactly how far they’re willing to go— for their kingdom, and for each other.
A Whisper of Claws (book 1 of The Steel Vanguard) is a steamy dragon shifter romance with tons of action. Expect chosen mates, forced proximity, off-limits (he thinks so anyway), found family, second chances, protective hero, fierce heroine, court intrigue, inner beasts with sharp claws and sharper attitudes… and a hard-won happily ever after.
Jennie Lynn Roberts believes that every kickass heroine (and hero!) should have control of their own story, a courageous lover to fight beside, and a guaranteed happily ever after. Because that doesn’t always happen in real life, she began creating her own worlds that work just the way they should. And she hasn’t looked back since.
If you want to talk books, romance, movies, reluctant heroes, or just about anything else with Jennie, feel free to contact her on Facebook or Instagram But be prepared to settle in for a long chat if you bring up shifters, dragons, Firefly, or The Princess Bride….
Independent reviewer for BookSirens, I was gifted my copy of this book.
My review of this book will be short, and I'm sorry about that!
I . . . struggled . . . I think is the best word.. . .with this book. I've no idea why, because I loved Ms Roberts Hawks books, and I love pretty much anything with dragons, so I can only assume it was a me thing, rather than a book thing.
I liked that Luka and Izabel both had a say, as did their dragon half. I really liked that way the plot twisted, and the threat came from an unexpected source.
I loved the way that others in the group were given enough hints for their books (or at least that was the way my mind went!)
It's steamy and full of danger, intrigue, and yes, dragons. Even if Luka was at odds with his for most of the book, but the boy does redeem himself!
I enjoyed it, I finished it, and I will try to follow what and who comes next, because while Izabel and Luka get a HEA, there is much unfinished.
This one starts with a found family that's already been broken by loss. Grief AND found family? Yes, please. It's not about building that bond, but the people left behind and their emotions in the wake of said loss.
Our main characters are Luka and Izzy, who are clearly in love with each other and have been for a long time. Luka's guilt and grief over her brother's death just keeps getting in the way, and he's convinced himself she'd be better off without him. She has made her peace with that... but neither of their inner beasts agree with them. The inner dialogue from their dragons is such a genuinely fun element.
The way these two are drawn back together despite everything feels sweet and healing as they try to solve a mystery together.
My one mild complaint is the ending. The mystery wraps up in a way that felt a little contrived and the answer to who was behind everything just wasn't that compelling. After everything that had been built up, it just landed a little flat for me.
But the romance more than carries it. This one is so fun! I had a great time!
Thanks to the author and R&R Booktours for the complimentary copy. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.
Rating: 4/5 I received an ARC for my honest opinion.
I really enjoyed this book. The found family, mystery, fated mates, and action were all well written and kept me engaged throughout.
The characters are layered and compelling, with bonds forged in fire and tested by secrets and betrayals. I found myself rooting for them, even as the world around them threatened to tear everything apart. Luka… he is definitely clueless. He means well, but when it comes to his mate and the bond they share, he just doesn’t seem to get it. I’ll admit, there were moments when I really didn’t like him, and I wasn’t sure he would redeem himself in Izabel’s eyes. But Roberts delivered, and I ended up getting the HEA I was hoping for.
Izabel is a strong female lead, smart, brave, caring, and tough when she needs to be. I really appreciated that she made Luka work for it and helped him understand what they truly had. The tension, both on the battlefield and between the characters, kept me hooked. Roberts also doesn’t shy away from showing the consequences of difficult choices, which added a satisfying depth to the story.
The pacing was a bit uneven for me. There were moments that moved quickly and completely pulled me in, while others felt slower and made it harder to stay fully immersed. That said, there were still plenty of moments that kept me curious and eager to see how everything would unfold.
I did enjoy the overall story and the direction it took, especially as more layers were revealed. It balanced action, mystery, and emotional elements well, even if I found myself wishing certain aspects had been explored a bit further.
I would like to thank Jennie Lynn Roberts for the opportunity to review this book.
Steel Vanguard: A Whisper of Claws plunged me headfirst into a world of grit, loyalty, and relentless danger—and I loved every pulse-pounding moment. Jennie Lynn Roberts crafts a story that balances thrilling military action with deeply personal stakes, giving readers both the roar of battle and the intimate struggles of her characters.
The protagonists are layered and compelling, their bonds forged in fire and tested by secrets and betrayals. I found myself rooting for them, even as the world around them threatened to tear everything apart. The tension—both on the battlefield and between the characters—kept me hooked, and Roberts doesn’t shy away from showing the consequences of tough choices, which added a satisfying depth to the narrative.
The one reason I landed on four stars instead of five? Some pacing hiccups in the middle slowed the momentum just enough to make me wish for a bit more of that relentless drive the opening promised. Still, the blend of intrigue, strategy, and subtle sparks of connection make this a series starter I’m genuinely excited to continue.
For anyone craving a military fantasy with heart, stakes, and just enough bite, A Whisper of Claws is a thrilling ride worth taking.
I had fun reading this one. I really enjoyed the bit of a mystery with the romance. Shifter romances are one of my top favorites romance reads regardless of the kind of shifter and this one did deliver on the shifter, but I do wish that I saw more. More dragons, more shifting and some more dragon lore. The daughter did a good job on touching each of the subjects, but I love dragons enough to want just a little bit more.
For the romance, you could obviously tell there was tension between Izzy and Luka. Sometimes it is difficult to know if they were in a past relationship or just got really really close to one. Probably just me, but I read both from the book. Luka will make you want to smack him upside his dragon head sometimes though!
For the actual mystery part, I think I had the suspect figured out at about 20%. That might just be courtesy to my pattern recognition and my adhd drive to solve mysteries. A couple of other people are still on my suspect list for when the next books come out though.
Overall, it was a fun read. Not too heavy and not very many plot holes either. And who doesn’t love mixing a little mystery with romance.
This standalone was soo good i couldn’t put it down. Luka is a dragon shifter who after his best friend dies blames himself and pushes away the one person he loves. Izabel just wants to move on and find peace. When they are forced together again they learn things aren’t what they seem. As they fight to save their kingdom and each other they can’t help but fall to the pull of being together. This world was rich and well thought out. i loved Izzy and how she fought for the truth and to be with Luka. I loved that this was a standalone but part of a bigger world. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
I really enjoyed this book. It had a mystery to solve that kept you guessing, mates, dragons and so much more. I loved the characters, so many strong women and clueless but well-meaning mc's. I started to get a bit frustrated with Luka but he did redeem himself quite well. Izabel embodies what a strong woman is. She is smart, brave and forgiving. If you like found family, mystery, true love and of course dragon shifters then look no further than this book. I received an advanced reader copy but these thoughts are my own
A great dragon fantasy romance. A bit lengthy in story building but that's probably my lack of appreciation more than anything.
I enjoyed both the MMC and FMC, but felt it got repetitive with him pushing her away.
I enjoyed the adventure and murder mystery of it all. I loved the drake backstory, shifting, claws, rippling scales appearing and disappearing based on emotions.
There were several steamy scenes and plenty of angst between Izabel and Luka. I'm glad they got their HEA.
Also noticed a set up for several futures stories. I look forward to reading more in this world!
WHISPER OF CLAWS is the first book in the Steel Vanguard series. There is another series before this but from what I’ve read although it’s in the same world it’s in a different area. I’ll definitely be reading that series now.
I absolutely devoured this book in one sitting I honestly couldn’t put it down.
There is no slow build-up to this story. It plunges you in right at the beginning with a death and carries on gripping you in a world of grit and danger.
The only reason I didn’t give this 5 stars was the pacing at times was a little off but the storyline kept me engaged throughout.
I love that this book opens right amongst the issue, and that we’re introduced to the world gradually and naturally. The internal dialogue is well placed, and I loved the banter and the brotherly found-family vibe. There are some awesome stories that could easily spin off from this series.
At times the book did feel a little on the lighter, slightly YA side, but I still enjoyed it. I also loved the mystery and detective moments throughout the story.
It was a fun read, not hard to get into and also not too shallow. I liked that there was a bit of suspense to the getting to the bottom of it but I kind of figured out the culprit early on. It was still nice though, and I liked the chemistry between the characters. They had a nice run of the story. I would have probably given it more stars had it been deeper and more engaging. It was a likeable read, but a little on the easy side. So still good!
This was a really fun read with dragon shifters, a murder mystery and an unresolved history with Izzy and Luka. I loved that there was tension from the off between them and this made for great reading when they are forced to work together, especially when their dragons like to get their 2 pence in too! This was a nice easy read and I'm keen to see where this goes in the next book.
Shifter romance in a fantasy setting with court politics, mystery, found family and the lovely MC's Izabel and Luka. Great start to the "Steel Vanguards" series.
