Between Love and the Game

Rate this book
Get ready for a forbidden sports romance between a former NFL player turned college coach, and the determined graduate student athletic trainer who has sworn off athletes.

Years of being an NFL quarterback taught me a lot of things. Expecting the unexpected was one. And it had always worked for me on and off the field. Until it didn't. Until I met Trinity Maxwell. One second, we were having a crash course in couponing, then the next I was asking her out on a date. But the following day, when she walked onto my field the first day of practice, everything changed. She wasn't just the new graduate student athletic trainer that would be shadowing the college football team I coached. No, as luck would have it, she was also our head coach's daughter. The same head coach who thought it would be a great idea to have her living across the street from me so I could keep an eye on her. Ignoring our feelings should be easy. It was over before it even started. Besides, nothing could come of us but a dozen code of conduct violations and a scandal of the year title. But she was on my field, constantly in my head, and somehow managed to wedge herself inside of my heart. Unfortunately, nothing stays a secret in this town for long. Someone's been watching, and they have the power to ruin us both. One wrong move could change everything. My lifelong football career could be ripped right out of my hands and her fragile reputation as a female in a male dominated industry was on the line. It wasn't just between right and wrong anymore. The stakes were so much higher. For the first time in my life, I realized I had to make a choice. Between love and the game.

Between Love and the Game has a guaranteed HEA and NO cheating. Please read author not for sensitive topics.

This book had me feeling a lot more than I expected.

Preston really did it for me. He’s all control and responsibility on the surface, but the second Trinity enters his life, you can feel him slipping. That internal battle of knowing better but wanting her anyway? So good. And Trinity holds her own so well. She’s focused, determined, and already dealing with being underestimated, so adding forbidden feelings on top of that just raises everything.

The setup honestly carries so much of the tension. She’s the head coach’s daughter, working with the team, and living right across from him, so there’s no escaping each other. The chemistry is there from the start, but it builds in a way that feels natural, not rushed. The banter is fun, the slow burn works, and every interaction has that underlying risk that keeps things interesting.

I did feel like the last stretch moved a bit quickly compared to the buildup, and I wouldn’t have minded more time with them at the end. Still, it didn’t take away from how engaging this was overall.

Overall, a fun and emotional story worth picking up.

This is a new author to me, but I will certainly be looking out for her work in the future.
This is Preston and Trinity’s story.
An injury forced Preston, an NFL player into retirement, and he is now a college coach, while Trinity, is a graduate student athletics trainer, who is also the head coach’s daughter, and she is determined to make a name for herself in a male dominated sport.
This is a well writer, easy to read story, with found family, friendships, emotions, tension, challenges, neighbors, forced proximity, humour, witty banter, forbidden workplace romance, secrets, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, and fun, sports romance.
I look forward to reading more from this author.

Preston and Trinity were so cute in this story. One minute, they’re happily going along, enjoying their time together. And the next minute, they find out exactly who the other is. And it’s kind of an off limits situation at that point. I enjoyed the back and forth. Them trying to do the right thing and keep away from one another. But I rooted for them when they threw caution to the wind and decided that loving one another was more important to them. A really enjoyable read.

A grounded, emotionally layered sports romance where every choice carries real consequences, and love must fight its way through pressure, reputation, and risk.

Between Love and the Game is one of those stories that really pulls you in because of the tension, not just the romance. It follows Preston Rusk, a former NFL quarterback who’s now coaching the Canyon Cougars, and his life is very structured, very controlled. That’s why it was so interesting to watch everything shift the moment he met Trinity Maxwell. Their first interaction is actually kind of light and funny, and I loved that he saved her in his phone as “coupon girl.” It’s such a small detail, but it sticks because it reminds you where everything started before things got complicated.
And complicated is exactly what it becomes when Trinity shows up as a graduate student athletic trainer… and then we find out she’s the daughter of the head coach, Rodney Maxwell. From that point on, I thought this was going to get messy. There are clear rules in place—no relationships in that kind of dynamic—and the story doesn’t ignore that. It leans into it.

One of the moments that really stood out to me (and I’m curious if anyone else reacted the same way) was when Trinity’s dad casually tells Preston that he rented the house across the street from him for her. I was honestly shocked… but also chuckling, because of course that would happen. It’s one of those “you’ve got to be kidding me” moments that instantly raises the stakes. Now they’re not just trying to keep their distance at work—they’re literally living across from each other, fully aware of what they’re trying to avoid. That proximity adds a layer of tension that never really lets up.

What really deepened the story for me, though, was understanding Trinity’s hesitation. She doesn’t just avoid relationships with athletes for no reason—there’s history there. She feels like the sport took her father away from her and her mother, Mona Strickland, long before everything else in their family shifted. So when she realizes Preston isn’t just a coach, but a former NFL player, it’s not exciting for her—it’s unsettling. It literally puts knots in her stomach. That detail adds so much weight to her choices, because now it’s not just about breaking rules—it’s about confronting something emotional she’s been carrying for years.

When you layer that with everything else—the code of conduct, her father’s position, the constant proximity—it really highlights the push and pull between them. You can feel how much they’re trying to fight what’s building, even as it becomes harder to ignore. Their connection isn’t rushed. It grows gradually, and that makes the struggle feel real.

I also appreciated how much depth Preston has outside of football. He’s not just this coach trying to do the right thing—he has a personal life that shows a softer side of him, especially as the godfather to his best friend Wesley’s two daughters. That part really grounded him for me. You can see that he’s someone who cares deeply, which makes his internal conflict feel even more genuine.
And Trinity—there’s so much going on with her beyond the romance. Those hints of resentment toward her father add another layer that really stood out. You see the contrast between their lives—he’s remarried, living in a beautiful home with things like a movie theatre, buying his wife, Julia, Louis Vuitton purses, while Trinity had to work three jobs just to pay for her own college tuition. That imbalance doesn’t have to be spelled out loudly—you feel it. And it explains why she’s so determined to stand on her own and not rely on anyone.

The pacing is more of a slow build, which I actually liked. It gives you time to sit with the characters and understand their choices. And when the tension builds, it feels earned. There aren’t a lot of overly dramatic moments, but the emotional weight is there, especially in those quieter scenes where they’re forced to make decisions.

Overall, I’d say this is a really solid sports romance that leans more into emotional tension and real-life consequences than just the romance itself. If you like stories where the characters have to make tough choices, and nothing feels easy or guaranteed, this one definitely delivers. It actually reminded me a bit of The Right Move by Liz Tomforde in how it blends sports, relationships, and personal stakes.

I am absolutely FERAL over this book. Like… pacing the room, clutching my chest, rereading scenes like they personally pay my bills kind of feral.

Between Love and the Game did not just hit, it tackled me full force and left me emotionally winded in the best way.

PRESTON. 🫠 Former NFL quarterback turned broody, responsible, “I know better but I want her anyway” coach?? Sir, the way this man tried to be noble while internally spiraling over Trinity had me in a chokehold. He’s disciplined, he’s intense, he’s carrying the weight of his entire career on his back… and then Trinity walks in and suddenly all that control starts cracking?? Delicious. Absolutely delicious.

And TRINITY?? I loved her. Strong, determined, carving out space in a male-dominated world, already dealing with people underestimating her… and then catching feelings for the ONE man she absolutely cannot have?? The tension was basically baked into her existence at that point and I was eating every second of it.

But the setup??? ARE YOU KIDDING ME.

She’s the head coach’s daughter.
She’s working as an athletic trainer on his team.
She lives ACROSS THE STREET FROM HIM.

That’s not just forbidden, that’s a full-blown emotional minefield and I gleefully skipped straight into it.

The chemistry between Preston and Trinity is immediate but it doesn’t feel rushed, it feels inevitable. Like gravity. Every interaction had that undercurrent of “this is a terrible idea” mixed with “I would absolutely ruin my life for you.” And honestly?? Same.

And the stakes?? Not just messy, but career-ending, reputation-destroying, scandal-of-the-year messy. You can feel the pressure building the entire time. Every glance feels risky. Every conversation feels like it could tip everything over the edge. I was STRESSED in the best possible way.

Also, can we appreciate a man who is down bad but still trying to do the right thing?? Preston fighting himself while clearly losing??? That’s the good stuff right there.

And when everything starts to unravel?? I was glued to the pages. The secrecy, the fear of being exposed, the “someone is watching” element?? It added this sharp edge that kept the romance from ever feeling safe or easy. It mattered. They mattered.

But through all of it, the heart of this story is choosing love when it costs something. Not when it’s easy. Not when it’s convenient. When it’s risky and terrifying and could take everything down with it.

And that payoff?? SO worth it.

This book is:
• high-stakes forbidden romance that actually feels forbidden
• electric chemistry that never lets up
• a hero who is equal parts control and chaos
• a heroine you want to root for with your whole chest
• and tension so thick you could slice it and serve it for dessert

I was drawn to this book based off the blurb of it being a relationship between an Athletic Training student and a coach. As an Athletic Trainer myself, I love seeing the profession used in the sports romance world. And this was such a cute book! Falling in love with a coach doesn’t happen all the time in our world, and is kind of a no-no. But the heart can’t help what the heart wants. And I was totally ok with my heart wanting Preston and Trinity to be together!

This book was light hearted, easy, and a cute football meets athletic training book. I am always a fan of an age gap, “hey coach”, and close proximity tropes in a book and this one has them all! Preston is a coach at Canyon University. He’s stoic, focused, protective, and truly a sweet guy. He has an adorable meet cute with Trinity that I found myself giggling at (coupons!). Trinity found herself moving to finish her Masters at Canyon as a student Athletic Trainer. She’s younger, kind, and has been burned in the past — not only by athletes (who now she’s worn off) but also by her parents. She moved to try to repair her relationship with her dad, who just so happens to be the head coach and Preston’s friend. Complicated, right?! So when these two find out just how murky the waters are, they truly try to stay away. But again, the heart wants what it wants. And eventually these two give in to the natural pull they seem to have towards each other. It’s so intense and hot, the sneaking stolen glances and sneaking into rooms at night. In the end, the risks catch up to them, and they have to choose if being together is worth it all. There is a very tiny third act break up, but it is short and the ending is soo sweet! It definitely needed to happen and I didn’t mind it one bit. It just pulled at my heart strings a little bit more, and made me even more invested in these two.

I really enjoyed seeing Trinity’s side to things, and enjoyed seeing her role as a student AT being played out in the book. And Preston was so cute throughout the whole book! I truly enjoyed seeing their relationship play out and overall really enjoyed this book. Quick, easy, fuss free book that will leave you feeling light and happy!

This was an ARC read for me and these are my honest opinions.

Trinity has moved to Canyon to pursue her’s Master’s degree, and possibly form a relationship with her estranged father, the head coach of the college football team she’ll be doing her placement with. When she meets an attractive stranger in the grocery store, they joke about couponing, and she puts it out of her mind, until they run into each other again the following week. Even after giving him her number, she’s surprised when he reaches out, and offers to give her a tour of the city the following weekend. What she didn’t expect was to show up for her first day of placement, and find out that he is one of the team’s coaches, making him firmly off limits.

Preston spent years as an NFL quarterback, before an injury forced him to retire, which is when he became a coach at Canyon University. Not one to make relationships a priority, he had his fun but made it clear to any women he was involved with that he was never interested in more. Until he met Trinity. From the moment he ran into her in the grocery store, she was never far from his mind, and when they saw each other again he knew it was a sign to pursue her, until he found out that she was a student, his neighbour, and his head coach (and close friend)’s daughter. Although he knows it could mean the end of his career, his attempts to stay away are all in vain, and when someone finds out, it could put everything they have at risk.

I received an early copy of this book from the Author Agency and really enjoyed it. Although they have obstacles in their way, Preston and Trinity’s story is a sweet romance. I loved that there was no drama or manipulation (aside from that involving he who shall not be named), and any time either of them felt forced to pull away was not due to playing games, but more a desire to protect the other. Trinity is mature beyond her years, having been forced to grow up too soon due to her parents’ actions, and while Preston may not have taken life too seriously before, once he feels that connection with her, he is all in.

I loved this book. It was my first time reading S.J. Chaynie, and I am so glad I picked it up.

This story hits so many of my favorite tropes. The age gap, the forbidden element, and the way their relationship builds so quickly all worked for me. It felt intense in the best way, like there was no chance for either of them to stay away once things started.

Preston completely had me. A former NFL quarterback turned coach who knows he should not cross the line, but cannot seem to stay away anyway? I was hooked. He tries so hard to be responsible and do the right thing, but internally he is unraveling over Trinity, and it made every interaction that much better. He is disciplined and carries so much pressure from his past, which makes it even more satisfying to watch that control start to slip.

And Trinity was just as compelling. She is strong, driven, and trying to prove herself in a male-dominated environment where she is already being underestimated. Watching her navigate her career while also dealing with feelings for the one man she absolutely cannot have added so much tension to the story. I loved seeing her grow more confident and stand up for herself.

The setup really takes this to another level. She is the head coach’s daughter, working as an athletic trainer on his team, and living across the street from Preston. Every part of their situation raises the stakes, and it creates this constant underlying tension that never lets up.

I also loved how their relationship begins. Meeting in the Pop-Tart aisle and bonding over something as random as couponing made everything feel grounded and real. From there, the banter comes easily, and once they are forced into close proximity, the chemistry takes over. Preston has just the right amount of possessiveness, and paired with Trinity’s growth, it made their dynamic so satisfying to watch unfold.

If you love sports romance with high tension, strong character growth, and a relationship that feels both risky and inevitable, this one is definitely worth picking up.

I absolutely fell in love with both Preston and Trinity. There is an instant attraction between these two begins in the grocery store over a Pop-Tart discussion and continues with text messages. Then when they agree to a Date things take a turn.

Trinity is a student at the college and her father is the head coach. Preston is one of the coaches on the team and in line to possibly take over as head coach one day. Therefore, Trinity is off limits because she is a student and the head coach has announced she is off limits.

I love that they try to fight their attractions because it is not allowed. Trinity is trying to make a name for herself and get to know her dad. I love her character she is trying to juggle paying off her college tuition, work, and live her life. As for Preston he is an amazing guy and great godfather to his best friend girls. I liked seeing the softer side to Preston.

Watching these two try to fight their feelings because it the right thing to do then sneaking across the street when the attraction gets too strong. Will these two be able to stay together or will one of them have to loss their career to be together?

I did not want to finish this story I truly loved the “coupon girl” and the ex-professional football player. I have to say I am now hanging on for Liv’s story. I need to know what caused that tear to escape and her dam to break.

Favorite Quotes:
My feelings were devolving and there was nothing I could do to stop it. It was like freefalling out of an airplane.

“You remember what I told you.”
How could I forget?
“I do.”
“I told you, don’t bring no woman to me unless you loved her like I loved your mother.” He dropped his pipe between his lips. “And here you are.”
I couldn’t help but grin at the old man. “Here I am.”

“So you’re saying, I had you at Pop-Tarts?” I mused.
He chuckled. “Actually, what sealed the deal for me were your dodgeball skills.”

This is the first book I have read by S.J. Chaynie and I'm in LOVE! I loved everything about this book and these characters! I was drawn in from the first page and couldn't put this book down. You will laugh, swoon, smile like crazy, get emotional, and in the end you will be left with a wonderful happily ever after.

OH PRESTON!! This man will have you swooning like crazy! He has the biggest hearts and I love how protective he was over Trinity. Preston and Trinity run into each other at the grocery store and right away you can tell they have instant chemistry. These two have no idea that their worlds are about to collide in a bigger way. Preston is a coach on her college football team where she will be working along their athletic trainer while she's finishing up her degree. Also Preston works for her dad!!!

Trinity was swooning over Preston but once she found out he works for her dad and they will be side by side she has to end things. They can't have a relationship with her in college and him working there. But how can they stop this attraction they share?! These two will do everything in their power to ignore it but fate might have other things in mind.

I fell in love with Preston and Trinity from the very beginning. You will also enjoy the side characters as well. There will be two characters you won't like and one unfortunately is her mom but we have to have bad to get the good! This story will have you laughing, swooning, smiling, getting emotional, make you mad a few times but in the end you will get an amazing ending!! I HIGHLY recommend this book! I can't wait to see what S.J. Chaynie has in store next!

Thank you S.J. Chaynie and The Author Agency for allowing me to read this ARC for my honest opinion.

📖 Between Love and The Game by S. J. Chaynie

✨ Main Characters: Preston & Trinity

❤️ What I liked

This was a feel good, fast paced read with two extremely likeable characters. After an adorable meet cute in the supermarket, Preston and Trinity soon find out that they’ll be in extremely close quarters, seeing as she’s the new graduate student athletic trainer for the team that he’s an offensive coach for… and she’s also the coach’s daughter. Yep. That’s a tense situation waiting to happen.

This book was low angst, despite the sneaking around that Preston and Trinity were doing as their relationship progressed. Though they tried their best to fight their attraction to one another, they couldn’t quite hide their feelings that well. I loved how supportive other characters were of their relationship (all but one, that Jagger kid), and how Preston was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice so that Trinity could continue with her studies. I mean, who doesn’t love an MMC that is willing to do that? Swoon.

🌀 What I disliked

Trinity and Preston.  EEEPP!! The chemistry was EVERYTHING you want and expect with a SJ Chaynie book.

Trinity has moved near her not-so-beloved father to pursue her Master's degree. She needs to survive the year at his college, working with his football team and seeing him with his new wife and family.  Gross right.

Preston is the assistant coach who has been eyed for the COACH COACH position next fall.  He is thrilled and knows he needs to keep his head down and focus.

An accidental run-in at the grocery store changed everything.  Trinity and Preston meet and soon are texting, which turns into a DATE. She is excited until... she is introduced to him as a student and to her as a coach she will study under.

The two try to fight the pull, but LORD, it is not possible. The chemistry....HAWT!!  HAWT!!!

Sneaking around and seeing each other while Trinity learns a lot about her dad in the process of it all.  When things flip upside down, they are not sure what will happen.  Can they be together, or will she get the boot since she is the student and he is the coach?

I seriously love the world SJ created.  I am not a huge football girl, but this story even I understood, no long-winded talks about football jargon.  LOL  Thank goodness for me, or my eyes would have glazed over.

This one pulled me in right away with the forbidden setup—a coach and a student who absolutely shouldn’t cross that line, but the tension is there from the start. And honestly? I was hooked.

Preston is the broody, controlled former NFL quarterback turned coach who’s trying to do the right thing… until Trinity shows up and completely shakes that control. I loved watching him struggle between what he should do and what he wants. And Trinity was just as easy to love—she’s strong, driven, and dealing with a lot, especially with her dad being the head coach and right in the middle of everything.

Their chemistry is instant, but it doesn’t feel rushed—it feels inevitable. All the sneaking around, the stolen moments, and that constant push and pull made their relationship so fun (and a little stressful in the best way).

The situation is messy—she’s his student, his boss’s daughter, and lives across the street—so when things finally catch up to them, it hits. The third-act breakup is quick, but it works and makes the ending even sweeter.

Overall, this was a light, easy, feel-good read with just the right amount of tension, heat, and heart. Even if football isn’t your thing, it’s still super easy to get into. Definitely a fun, swoony romance that kept me invested the whole time.

I received this as an ARC from the author and this is my honest opinion.

this was such a cute, feel-good read. I picked it up and ended up finishing it in under 24 hours without even trying
Preston and Trinity had that immediate, easy chemistry that just pulls you in. their meet-cute was adorable, and once they’re in each other’s orbit, the tension builds fast. assistant coach x coach’s daughter with a no-fraternization rule… the forbidden vibes were definitely there
I really liked how fun and flirty their dynamic felt, but it still had emotional moments that grounded the story. you could see that both of them were dealing with real things beneath the surface, which made their connection more meaningful
this is the kind of book that feels cozy and swoony while you’re reading it, the type you just sink into and don’t want to put down
I will say, the romance leaned a bit insta-love for me and moved pretty quickly. I wanted more time with them together and a bit more depth in certain areas, especially when it came to Trinity’s family dynamics. those moments felt like they could have been explored more because the potential was definitely there
overall, this was a sweet, fast-paced romance that left me smiling by the end. easy to binge, fun to read, and perfect if you’re in the mood for something light with a little emotional depth 💛

I received this book from the author for an honest review.

This football girlie was ready for this story! From goal line to goal line and all the yardage in between - I was cheering from the seats for Preston and Trinity!!

Preston and Trinity made their 1st down while at the grocery store – talking about coupons no less! Chemistry from the start but they do not realize who each other really is. Preston is the assistant coach and Trinity; well, she is the coach’s daughter! Yes please!!! Bring it on!

While they are making the move down the field there happens to be some penalties along the way. The fact that their relationship falls on a no-fraternization policy, her mother, someone that “knows,” a few family issues, them having to sneak about like teenagers…. and then the realization that they do in fact love each other. But, should they have to chose between love and the game? Why can’t they have both!

4th and goal – well that my friends was a Touchdown!!

Loved this story! Loved their connection/attraction/chemistry – was all good, well except for her mother. I am not a fan of hers!

HIGHLY recommend this book and I can't wait to read what S.J. Chaynie has coming up next!

Between Love and the Game is an emotionally driven sports romance that goes beyond the typical athlete storyline, focusing instead on life after the game and the complexities that come with it.

Preston, now a college coach, brings a different perspective to the sports romance genre, while Trinity’s role as both a graduate student and the head coach’s daughter creates a naturally layered and forbidden dynamic.

Their relationship develops under circumstances that already carry tension, but what elevates the story is the emotional depth surrounding Trinity’s family. The storyline involving her father adds a meaningful layer, especially as it explores what happens when someone carries a burden in silence.

This element brings a strong emotional connection to the story and enhances the overall impact, making it more than just a romance.

While the spice level is more moderate, the emotional weight and character dynamics more than make up for it.

Overall, Between Love and the Game is a powerful and well-balanced story that delivers both romance and emotional resonance, making it a standout read.

This new to me author totally captured my attention with this story. I absolutely loved these characters and the emotional depth to their story.

From their initial meeting in Aisle 7 over Pop-Tarts these two had a connection. I loved Preston’s reaction and his willingness to face another crazy busy Sunday at the grocery store in the hopes of running into Trinity again. When they both realize they have an unexpected connection that forbids them from anything more, both are extremely disappointed. Close proximity - at work and at home push these two to beyond the point of resistance. Their secret relationship is both sweet and steamy. Preston is absolutely feral for Trinity!

There are many emotional subplots that make this more than just a typical sports romcom. I was completely captivated from beginning to end, and I’m eager to read more by this author. I’m hopeful for stories focusing on Preston’s friends Wesley, Shaw and Theo; and maybe one of them will fall for his sister.

I received a free ARC from the author and The Author Agency; and I am voluntarily leaving an unbiased review.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I loved both Trinity and Preston! Their flirty banter between, combined with Preston’s possessive/protective nature, made it hard to put this book down!

This is a very light romance, but the characters and their stories still have a lot of depth. Luckily, it’s a short read, so I finished it in one night but I definitely wanted more. I do wish the ending had been a little longer, as it felt slightly rushed, but it didn’t take away from the story. I just wanted more time with Preston and Trinity!

I also really loved the evolution of Trinity’s relationship with her dad, and I’d love to see how things continue to develop for them in the future.

I’m hopeful, based on how things wrapped up, that we’ll get another book featuring Liv and an MMC I’m quietly rooting for but can’t name as to not give anything away from this book. Overall, I really enjoyed this one. I think I’ve found a new author to follow, and I can’t wait to read more of her work!

Last thing Trinity needs is to meet someone ... at aisle seven of the supermarket, but that's what she does. New to town, starting an internship and very close to graduation, Trinity's life is a bit full. She also has family drama that she has to figure out. So, bumping into Preston while was very nice, just not on her radar, when it happens a second time, Trinity agrees to go on a nondate, a tour as they wanted to call it. But when she realizes just who Preston is, as in he works for her father, Trinity puts a stop to the whole thing. The spark was lit thought, and while the two are trying to stay apart, that proverbial moth to a flame thing does apply. Will they risk it all?

Ok, this was a first for me with this author and I promise it will not be the last. I'm already ready for the rest of Liv's story. We are getting some nice banter, chemistry that is off the charts, some really messed up family stuff, and a bit of blackmail. I give this 4 stars.

Thank you for the arc The Author Agency

I really enjoyed this story. It was fast paced, it felt light and kept me engaged. Although there are some serious issues addressed in the story for the most part it felt easy and light to read. The issues that were raised were done so, in a sensitive way.

The chapters were really short which I loved and it flowed well throughout the story. The story was engaging from the start it moved at a good pace, quite fast in my opinion which is a good thing.

I loved the characters and could definitely relate in some parts to the FMC. The peripheral characters were also lovable. I think this is a stand alone story but if it was to change to a series I'd definitely love to read about some of the other characters.

The dedication at the start made me chuckle, if only we could all meet a Spencer in aisle 7! 🤣

This is the first book I've read by this author but I'll definitely look out for more!

I really enjoyed this book but felt like it ended on a cruel (to the reader) cliffhanger!  There has to be a next book and I need it now!
I enjoyed the off limits trope for this book. He's a coach for the university she attends and her dad is the head coach and his friend.
I will spoil that this book does have a third act break up but trust the process. It completely makes sense for this book. Trust the process!
Also trust the process for the end of the story. I didn't agree with how it ended but it redeemed itself in the epilogue due to technicalities.
A couple things I wanted more from this book is more of the relationship between the FMC and her parents.  I feel like that was a big part of her background story and we did not get to see them actually interacting much.
I also wanted more of Ray's character. I just enjoyed him. He seemed witty.
Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys off limit tropes and sports romances.

Without meaning to, this is the second book with a very similar premise I’ve read recently. Watching how different authors put their own spin can be fun. Between Love and the Game leans into the will they won’t they tension, the forbidden nature of their relationship (on several fronts). I loved watching Trinity and Preston grow and the way they eventually can’t help but be together.

The banter between these two, and the way they pull out the best in the other made for an enjoyable read that you should add to your TBR today!.

Seeing the other coaches in this one has me hoping they are the next MCs in the series!

⭐3.5

This was my first S.J. Chaynie read and definitely not my last. A cute, quick story with just the right amount of tension.

I loved that Preston and Trinity meet in the Pop-Tart aisle talking about couponing. It felt so real. Their flirty banter takes off quickly, and once the forced proximity kicks in, so does the chemistry. Preston has that just the right amount of possessive, while Trinity’s growth in standing up for herself was a highlight.

The ending felt a bit rushed, and I would’ve loved more - especially around Trinity healing her relationship with her dad and kicking her mom to the curb. But overall, this was a fun, fast read with solid chemistry. If you enjoy sports romance with a forbidden edge, it’s worth picking up.

Thank you to The Author Agency and S.J. Chaynie for the ARC—opinions are my own.

Trinity + Preston

Between Love and the Game follows the story of Trinity who has come to Texas to work with the local football team shadowing the PT person for her graduate degree. She meets this handsome fella at the grocery store (if only it were that easy IRL) and it happens to be one of the coaches she will be working with... but she doesn't know this..

They start seeing each other at work and they keep it light.. until they don't. Things get a little messy BUT it all works out in the end. It was such a quick read. Pacing was great AND the characters are so well rounded. If you're looking for an easy sports romance with a little found family and forced proximity then this should be on your TBR.

Thank you to the author and the author agency for an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

What a great book, SJ Chaynie captured the personality of an NFL quarterback perfectly! Preston could not have been better written. His intense personality, focus, responsibility of his team, and rule follower, even when he knows better. He had to retire due to injury and is currently a college coach.

Trinity is a breath of fresh air, smart, strong, and making her mark in a male dominated world! Do not underestimate her. By the way she a graduate student athletic trainer, on his team. She is the coach’s daughter, and she lives across the street. NO temptation there!

Will these two catch feelings? The tension is delicious, humor and banter for days, secrets, and chemistry both are trying to deny. The risk is terrifying, but how it turns out…read it.

Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.

I’m going to need a minute to recover from the chemistry in this one. 😮‍💨

Between Love and the Game is the perfect mix of high-stakes tension and that delicious, slow-burn banter that keeps you "just one more chapter-ing" until 2 AM. S.J. Chaynie has a way with prose that feels effortless—it’s punchy, modern, and keeps the energy high even when the characters are just staring each other down across a room.

The Pacing: Fast-paced but never rushed. I loved that the emotional beats were given room to breathe amidst the chaos of the setting.

The Banter: Top-tier. The back-and-forth felt so natural; it wasn't just "witty for the sake of being witty," it actually built their connection.

The Verdict: If you love a romance where the characters feel like real, messy humans and the setting feels like a character itself, pick this up. It’s a total home run (pun absolutely intended). ⚾️❤️

Trinity and Preston have a meet cute at the grocery store. Only to find out they are colleagues and she is also a student at the university they’re at. Although the attraction was there from the very start, they couldn’t risk their careers. But although they tried hard to stay away from one another, their hearts only seek to be closer. This is a forbidden sports romance that will have you feeling so many emotions!

This is my first read from S.J. Chaynie and I loved it! I thought it was cute, fun, and everything I wanted in a sports romance. I just wished it was longer! Trinity’s and Preston’s back story are so emotional and they both have scars that are still trying to heal. Love the growth that they had though.

Also can’t wait for book 2 of the series! At least I hope there is!

This is a story where the setup creates tension that never lets up and add in characters that you can’t help but love, and Between Love and The Game will have you swooning.

Trinity is trying to prove herself in a male dominated sport as the new athletic trainer. But her dad is the head coach of the team and when she shows up for work, she sees Preston, the man she met and has been talking to, is one of the coaches.

Preston, when an injury forced him to retire from the NFL, he took a job as a coach at Canyon University. What he didn’t expect is to meet and fall for a woman who happens to be his neighbor, the athletic trainer and the daughter of his boss.

Loved the tension between these two, it created the perfect push/pull.
